Movie: Can't really say, pretty much everything I gave 5 stars to - my DVD collection will need its own room someday, I hope ;-) And all those little faulty indy films, too...
Actor: Hard to say again, I am a fan of George Clooney and Angelina Jolie, but that doesn't have that much to do with acting... ;-) I always like the supporting cast, such as the wonderful Catherine Keener
Director: Ang Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodovar, Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Baz Luhrmann, the Coen brothers...
Quote: Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative. (Oscar Wilde)
About Me
I am such a weirdo when it comes to useless info about actors, directors, films, gossip... Why can't I be so good when it comes to stuff I actually NEED to know for uni? Dream job? Movie critic! ;-)

I am also a sucker for good TV shows, my favourites at the moment include Grey's Anatomy, House MD, The L Word and Six Feet Under, which I only discovered know (talk about catching up fast...).

Coyote Ugly Coyote Ugly PG-13 1.5 Stars
Cheesefest with hot girls. Hmm.
Am Ende kommen Touristen Am Ende kommen Touristen Unrated 4.0 Stars
Very subtle, subdued narration, the director chooses to quietly follow his characters around instead of giving us moral guidance. The result is a rather compelling film about German guilt and finding oneself.
God Is Brazilian God Is Brazilian Unrated 2.0 Stars
Re-rated after seeing it for the second time (rated it 4 stars! before) - the storyline is bland, the dialogues clichéd and uninspired. Good fun, though, I do recommend it for a just for fun movie night. Very funny film and wonderful declaration of love to Brazil.
Quantum of Solace (2008) Quantum of Solace (2008) Unrated Want To See
After seeing the teaser, I am very excited about this, should be good.
Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) R 4.5 Stars
Warning: do not watch if you intend on travelling to Brazil for the first time anytime soon. You might be discouraged, and that would be a shame. This movie shows the ugly, ugly side of the marvelous city - and unfortunately it can't be called anything but extremely realistic. Intense, violent and frustrating in its hopelessness. There are neither good nor bad guys in this film, everybody has their reasons for acting as they do. The psychological dimension of the vicious circle of drugs, poverty and violence is portrayed very vividly, the whole psychology of violence is layed out perfectly. As a whole, this is very hard to stomach - brace yourself for a very harsh ride of a movie.
In Her Line of Fire (Air Force Two) (Airforce 2 Down) In Her Line of Fire (Air Force Two) (Airforce 2 Down) R 1.0 Star
Technically, this is a bad, trashy film. But if you know going into it that you are gonna get exactly that and disband all disbelief (the woman takes out a whole army by herself!), you will have very fun, campy 1 1/2 hours. This is pure trashy entertainment, nothing more. Unfortunately I saw the cut Australian version where they didn't cut the violence, NOOO, they cut the romance between the two women. Because the girl getting the girl is obviously so much more controversial than unnecessary violence. Sometimes I doubt the sanity of our civilization ever so slightly. In the cut version, Jill Bennett covered in sweat and mud has to suffice as lesbian eye candy, then.

Brokeback Mountain 1. Brokeback Mountain R 5.0 Stars
This is fantastic. Ang Lee's quiet, intense direction, two wonderful and subtle actors, a great script - why on earth this film did not win the Oscar is beyond my comprehension. A big minus was homophobic idiots in the audience, maybe IQ tests should be conducted before entering the theatre. If someone is too immature to deal with love in all its forms they should maybe not go to see this out of all movies... This film makes me glad about the time and place I live in, but some of the comments both in the theatre and on this community remind me that THIS struggle isn't yet over. Can I just add to my ancient review that this movie turmed me into a fan of Heath Ledger's work, which makes it even harder to watch now.
Saving Face 2. Saving Face R 5.0 Stars
I think this must be my favourite romantic comedy of all times. Its sweet, funny, quirky, has a cute couple without the "gay" part being a big issue - wonderful film that more people need to see.
Philadelphia 3. Philadelphia PG-13 5.0 Stars
Not only does Tom Hanks give the performance of a lifetime, this is also one of the most touching and most important films of the Nineties.
Trainspotting 4. Trainspotting R 5.0 Stars
Great, weird, gritty, dramatic and funny. And will forever be associated with my attempts to learn Scottish English. They only temporarily suceeded. ;-)
William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet 5. William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet PG-13 5.0 Stars
Brilliant. Just that. Whoever manages to make Shakespeare appeal to young, modern people deserves the highest praise. Best modern Shakespeare adaptation without a doubt. And maybe Leo's only good mainstream movie... ;-)
Memento 6. Memento R 5.0 Stars
Wow. I feel the urgent need to hand out superlatives freely: Original, brilliantly shot, a masterpiece of modern cinema.

The Dark Knight The Dark Knight
    4.5 Stars by Jens
So, what to say about one of the hypes of the year? That the first 30-45 minutes underwhelmed me a little, where there was a lot of politics and crime talk but not really all that much Batman, which made it almost feel like a superhero stumbling into a Michael Mann thriller? That I kinda missed Gotham City having a unique and at least semi-comic-esque look, like in the old films and still parts of Batman Begins, because it just looked like Chicago (which it was as an intentional choice by the creators, but not what I want in a Batman film)?
No, let's not talk about that. Before you're starting to think I didn't love this movie let's get to the acting, directing and especially and the second half of the film. Holy crap.
How Nolan managed to turn the excitement screw closer and closer with every minute of the movie with the character triangle of Batman, Dent and the Joker was just amazing. The action, the timing, the dialoges, the plot, the surprises: perfect. The whole showdown with the two boats and all twists and turns that included was just genius.
All that was not only thanks to a great script but actors at the pike of their abilities. People like Bale, Freeman and Caine always deliver great performances, but the winners of this movie were others for me.
    a) Aaron Eckhart who was a perfect Harvey Dent, for a while even felt like an equally important co-star to Batman / Wayne.
    b) Gary Oldman whose part as Gordon was so much more satisfying and interesting than still in the first movie, carried by his wonderful performance.
and then c) there was the late Heath Ledger, who somehow wasn't there. I didn't think of him for a second during the movie, because I was watching the Joker, this insane, funny, creepy madman who was pulling all those strings. He will be remembered and talked about for this role for a very long time.
In short, the second half blew me away so much that it more than made up for a few bumps in the first.
Easily the best Batman movie so far.
Hey, you should really see this! One of the movies of the year, no doubt.

    The Savages The Savages
    5.0 Stars by Daniel
The Savages is a near-perfectly made, flawlessly acted gem. Suddenly forced into 'real life' at 42 and 39 years of age, siblings Jon and Wendy have to care for their estranged father, who has developed dementia. A simple, character-driven story dealing with a messy subject in a subtle, intelligent and cathartic way that pulls none of its punches and never wallows in sentimentality. Refreshingly told with beautiful camera work and filled with truthful observations, melancholy, black humor and poignancy, this is just a wonderful film. It's essentially a two-hander (though unusually we do also see things from the father's perspective sometimes), with Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman never putting a foot wrong. The Savages reminded me very much of Alexander Payne's About Schmidt and Sideways (and Payne is one of the Exec Producers) - not just in terms of style but in substance too. Definitely worthy of your time.
Semi-interested? Then you must see this.

When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object - this is the best blockbuster I've seen in the past 8 years. Engagin and idealistic but almost academic, never before has due process, justice and power been discussed this well in a comic hero movie. Ledger's immortal now, while men like me will continue to watch everythin burn. Joker's right you know - people are pathetic.

Very lackin in 3D - drama, dinosaurs and decency. This will never be Jumanji. The Icelandic bird (the woman, not the animal) looks nice though... sorta like a young Nicole Kidman. Anyway, Verne turns in his grave... art is dead and 3D glasses rule the world.

You don't have a right to complain if you read the film title. Get over yourself and stop ratin movies bad because you're too damn sophisticated to enjoy well-constructed rubbish! This was 94mins of fake tits (mostly) and fancy G-strings sandwiching semi-brilliant, tongue-in-cheek philosophical discourses. Honest!
Jenna Jameson can act, I insist.

Now this is a romantic comedy! I could not stop giggling through most of it. The jokes and certain acting were hilarious. The daughter was the biggest drama queen. The cameos were brilliant. weirdly loads of UK cameos, and just very original, and definitely worth a watch. I think you could surprise yourself at how much you enjoy this movie!

Wow... Wasn't expecting that in a movie. Especially wasn't thinking a movie like this would make you think about love. Great acting from the whole cast, and a film that really pushes boundaries. Much more impressed than I thought I would be in every way.

This movie rocks harder than Led Zeppelin and Nirvana mixed, with more guts than 50 abbertoires. Rose McGowan totally rules as always, and this movie can totally take the mick out of itself. Humour, action, gore... All in abundance! Completely original! Check it...

    Tarnation Tarnation
    5.0 Stars by Daniel
An extremely unique, deeply personal and very affecting documentary, Tarnation was made for under $300 and is comprised of home movies, telephone messages, photo montages, some 'dramatic re-enactments', candid footage and pieces of 80's pop-culture TV and music. If ever a film deserved one of those 'Originality of Vision' awards, then this is it. Jonathan Caouette expertly constructs all the elements in a stunningly visual way with at times almost Lynchian surrealism, but the film is never less than heartrending. A filmic love-letter to Caouette's mother and a powerful documentary about the destructiveness of mental illness, Tarnation has redefined the possibilities of what a low-budget film can achieve and is a mesmerizing experience.
Hey, you should really see this! Jonathan Caouette sent bits of his film to John Cameron Mitchell as part of an audition for Shortbus. Mitchell saw the potential in the footage so rather than give Caouette a part in his film he instead met with Gus Van Sant and together they signed on as Executive Producers for the finished film...
