Australia - PG-13 An epic love story that will be the next Gone With the Wind.

DIRECTED BY: Baz Luhrmann
STARRING: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown, Bruce Spence, Jack Thompson

Synopsis

Set against the scenic backdrop of pre-World War II Australia, Baz Luhrmann's romantic period adventure stars Nicole Kidman as an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch, and Hugh Jackman as the rough-and-tumble cattle driver who helps protect her property from greedy English cattle barons. My Review

This is my first review in this site since FOREVER. I haven't use this site for like a couple of months because I've promised myself to put more concern on my school grade. And then this afternoon I looked at my profile and sigh, 'God, how I miss this." So here I am.

Back to bussiness, this Baz Luhrmann's movie, well, clearly, there's something terribly wrong about the tagline. 'the next Gone With the Wind'?? I don't know that there will be someone that brave, daring to say the words. But here he is. With the movie Australia. The tagline was a joke, really.

But why is the 3 stars? I can't deny how I missed the old-fashioned romance that I thought will be no longer exists since the days of Dr. Zhivago. But, clearly, this movie brings it back, but not quite in the right way. Luhrmann seemed to push the whole things, the romance, the Nullah thingy to fit in the greatest war I've ever known. I appreciate the bravery and will to bring Australia's face a bigger part in this movie industry. In the end, Australia will become a 2 and a half hour of drama who tells the audience its story, but with no satisfaction, as we felt when we watch a good movie.

It is long expected movie, for me. I've waited it since summer, it is quite a disappointment, but still worth to watch. Forgive me that I'm using a woman's point of view here, the romance wasn't that bad, and I thought the chemistry was there. The encore of Somewhere Over the Rainbow works for me, it supported the BREATHTAKING scenery of Australia, the exposure of my own neighbor continent's tradition, but they couldn't utterly help the sharpness of the script. We once witnessed beautiful, beautiful, dialogs in Gone With the Wind (I'm sorry, I can't help not to comparing these two), and of course, we expected the encore here. But if you see the movie that way, then you'll find nothing but disappointment. The script was too simple for this epic gala.

In simple way to say it, Australia has a proper amunition to hit the higher score. It should not be done this way, I mean, what was Luhrmann doing these 7 years with zero movie producted, after we've seen a great something he has behind the screen with The Red Curtain Triology (contains: A Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!), but this Australia IS NOT A MAGNIFICENT COME BACK FOR LUHRMANN.

Just because it is, doesn't mean it should be.

Schindler's List - R Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire.

DIRECTED BY: Steven Spielberg
STARRING: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Caroline Goodall, Embeth Davidtz

Synopsis

Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler, a German businessman in Poland who sees an opportunity to make money from the Nazis' rise to power. He starts a company to make cookware and utensils, using flattery and bribes to win military contracts, and brings in accountant and financier Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) to help run the factory. By staffing his plant with Jews who've been herded into Krakow's ghetto by Nazi troops, Schindler has a dependable unpaid labor force. For Stern, a job in a war-related plant could mean survival for himself and the other Jews working for Schindler. However, in 1942, all of Krakow's Jews are assigned to the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, overseen by Commandant Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes), an embittered alcoholic who occasionally shoots prisoners from his balcony. Schindler arranges to continue using Polish Jews in his plant, but, as he sees what is happening to his employees, he begins to develop a conscience. He realizes that his factory (now refitted to manufacture ammunition) is the only thing preventing his staff from being shipped to the death camps. Soon Schindler demands more workers and starts bribing Nazi leaders to keep 1,100 Jews on his employee lists and out of the camps.

My Review

I usually don't write a long review for a movie that I trully respect. I did it to The Godfather, and I did it because first, I don't feel like I have many words to say, and especially because, I feel like I have zero right to judge it. And that is what I'm doing here.

I feel like a moron that I've just finished watching it, I mean after all these times I walked around in the world and hey, 'I haven't seen Schindler's List.' What a stupidity. I almost dropped my tears watching it. I can't describe how POWERFUL this movie is. The 3 main casts are PERFECT. Flawless acts by Neeson, Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes. The script, the score, the direction by Steven Spielberg (a standing ovation for the guy), all, exquisite.

At the moment after I finished watching it, I sat on my couch doing nothing and told myself that I just watched a movie, not a World War II. It is hard to believe that there is someone in this world is able to make something so real. This is more than just a 195 minutes time of your life that you spent watching movies. And further, this is something that will make you realize about the passing of thousands, millions of lives, and what can we do to make the world a better place to live, that we all capable of it.

Yes, I agree with my dear friend Nemka Jay, Schindler's List is A MASTERPIECE YOU HAVE TO WITNESS, AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE.

This list... is an absolute good. The list is life. All around its margins lies the gulf.

My Review

Okay, let me make this clear. I've seen many Hollywood movies. And I've seen bunch of pain in the asses, and I've seen the Oscar qualities. If only I have a right to pick the Best Foreign Pictures nominees in Oscar, I would pick Laskar Pelangi as one of them. And it is not a nepotism, but I think THE MASTERPIECE DESERVES IT.

Laskar Pelangi is a movie with powerful emotions inside, all the characters altogether side by side making the marvelous storyline about a living of 11 children of Belitong, who once had one of the most beautiful views in Indonesia. I'm sure you all know Bali , imagine it, but calmer, and more peaceful. Obviously, the main characters took control of the movie. The movie's soul lies on the characters' development. I was surprised that Muslimah's character is played perfectly by the Indonesian actress Cut Mini Theo. I never knew she had all the power, and completely all-out to bring the character alive.

I always amazed by the Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana's collaboration, which had already given birth to movies that will make Indonesia proud with his movie industry, which still improving each days.

The education issues brought to screen perfectly, that it is a right of everyone's to be educated, even the poors, just like the kids in Laskar Pelangi. All of them, don't have a good economic living, their education is only bassed in Ibu Muslimah's kindness and dedication to save these kids' dream. A HEARTWARMING EXPERIENCE WATCHING, A MASTERPIECE.

Hiduplah dengan memberi sebanyak-banyaknya dan bukan menerima sebanyak-banyaknya!

My Review

This is why I love about Tarantino. BOLD, ORIGINAL, AND HOT! I mean, how often we got a chance to see a movie with the whole different idea and humor? Pulp Fiction is a dark comedy with bunch of good casts, good script, f*cking many memorable scenes. What I love the most about Tarantino is that he didn't see his movie as a movie, he made it to tell story to people. He doesn't care how long the scene is, or how strange the scene as it captured with the camera, as long as the message of the movie is delivered by an original way of story telling. And WE LOVE THAT. The casts gave a fresh performance we want to see. Jackson played as Jules, freshly, nothing like his performances before. Travolta the best performance I've ever seen in his career. (I'm not sure it still is after his performance in Hairspray, he was so damn good there) Yes, I can say that Tarantino has spelled Thurman and Travolta into top grade actors. They should be thankful to him for their whole life. Anyway, I think Travolta and Jackson's role here is the best duo performance since they made the first Hollywood movie.
Script was terrific. Well, to me, subjectively, Pulp Fiction is a movie who got the plentiest of memorable scenes in movie history. Guess this one will fly slightly to one of my favorite movies of all-time.

No Academy Award's Best Picture? I guess this movie is just not so lucky to be released in 1994, facing Forrest Gump in the final battle. If only this was released in 1998, they would be a bunch of crazy men if they wouldn't pick this as the best, and choose Shakespeare in Love instead. ONE OF THOSE MOVIES WHO DESERVE OSCAR'S BEST PICTURES, BUT THEY DIDN'T GET ANY.

There's a passage I got memorized.
Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities
of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

My Review

First, I want to blab something (again) about the pitiful condition in Indonesia. You know what? Rescue Dawn had just been released a few weeks ago, instead, they now already promoting about High School Musical 3: Senior Year everywhere. The trailer, banners, oh.. This really got my concern, fully. THIS IS IRONIC.

Now, back to the movie itself. I am not addicted to war movies, especially, it is not really my type of movie. But the trailer caught my breath, it had me at 'hello'. So the true story about Dieter Dengler was brought to us PERFECTLY. I can't imagine something with more humanity, combined with thrills and excellent characters development, as it is brought by Rescue Dawn.

The main idea about the movie is, THE CHARACTERS DEVELOPMENT. It is where the true power of the movie lies on. The intrigue between characters, the anger and sadness, all seem REALISTIC. So you have seen Bale in bunch of great movies to realize how great he really is. Started with Empire of The Sun, Ameican Psycho, Batman Begins, I'm Not There, The Dark Knight, an other brilliant works, but Rescue Dawn is one of those movies that really brought Bale's brilliant performance, focusing on the characters and all, Bale is flawless here. Steve Zahn played the scene-stealer as Duane. No one can really brought the movie's soul as much as Zahn did. All the desperations, emotion, and how the scenes showed how vulnerable he is, this is the movie's point. Without Zahn, Rescue Dawn would be like Pulp Fiction without Samuel L. Jackson and The Dark Knight without Ledger.

The scriptwriters maybe didn't have to do a tough job writing when they had so many talents like Bale and Zahn. The brilliant script brought alive by one of the best duo in Hollywood history. Rescue Dawn is a movie where we can find full of personality, humanity, and a gold between another shits parading around. (Should I mention again the High School Musical-ceae family?)

Empty what is full. Fill what is empty. Scratch what itches.

Joni's Promise (Janji Joni) - Unrated An urban adventure.

DIRECTED BY: Joko Anwar
STARRING: Nicholas Saputra, Mariana Renata, Rachel Maryam, Surya Saputra, Dwiki Riza and Ira Maya Sopha

Synopsis

Film. Probably the the greatest blessing that art ever gave to mankind. Everybody knows the filmmaking process. But only a few understands the role of a young man named Joni (Nicholas Saputra) in the process. He's the man behind the screen. It depends on him whether people can watch a movie at a theater or not. Joni is a film delivery guy. One day, he meets a beautiful young woman (Mariana Renata) who will tell him her name, only if he promises he can deliver the reels of the film she is going to see on time. Joni thinks it's gonna be easy. But that day, it seems that the whole city is conspiring to make him fail to keep his promise.

Source: IMDb

My Review

Janji Joni is an unique Indonesian movie.ENTERTAINING, BUT NOT CHEAP. May be some of you needs to know how the Indonesian movies condition lately. After the darkest period of Indonesian movie industry, Indonesian movie tried to strike back in the air, with plenty of breathtaking collection of movies. May I mention Berbagi Suami (Love For Share), Ayat-ayat Cinta (Verse of Love), and the latest is Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Soldier). But Janji Joni is one of those movies who setted Indonesian movies back on track.

The story is non-typical, about a film delivery guy, which maybe all of us never put a concern on his difficult job. The debutant director Joko Anwar brought us an entertainment comedy with brain. The amin casts are brilliant, except fot Mariana Renata, she is beautiful, but her acting was unnatural, compared to the other casts Nicholas Saputra and Rachel Maryam.

Now that I've seen good collections of Indonesian movie, I started to think optimistic for the rest of Indonesian movie's future. YOU SHOULD TRY TO WATCH THEM.

Film. Mungkin karya seni terbesar yang pernah dibikin manusia.

It's like the three High School Musicals are not enough, they made this SINGING'O'CRAPPY all over again. Please, they are not as cool as think they are. Obviously, the Jonas brothers can't act. Ron Perlman returns to the role of the big red BPRD agent in this sequel to 2004's Hellboy, directed once again by Guillermo del Toro and scripted as before in collaboration with original -Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. For centuries, an ancient truce has kept the naïve citizens of the human race safe from the horrors of the invisible realm -- but that's all about to change, and fast. A ruthless leader has emerged in the invisible realm, a tyrant just as comfortable walking the surface realm as he is living in the land of fantasy. When this power-mad ruler defies his bloodline to assemble an unstoppable army of fantastical creatures that he will use to wage a supernatural war on humanity, it begins to appear that humankind's days are numbered. But Hellboy (Perlman) isn't about to stand idly by as the planet is purged by a demonic despot, and with a little help from his team at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, he may just be able to send our otherworldly overlords packing. My Review

Yes, it just came out in my country, what a shame. Even Cage's Bangkok Dangerous was released instantly. I don't know what's going through their minds. Maybe they think that all the people all over Indonesia will be like "Oh, let's see Cage." without knowing what the movie itself is all about.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army was set to compared the first one. No intention to take it to the higher level, like what The Dark Knight did. (Great. I will never enjoy superhero movies that much again, since The Dark Knight hit the unreachable spot.) But The Golden Army itself, is a good movie. DEL TORO-ISH CREATURES still parading all over the movie. This is no Pan's Labyrinth, but the creatures' style are the same, and of course, Pan's Labyrith is Del Toro's masterpiece, and The Golden Army is not.

The view, is without any doubts, BREATHTAKING. All the imaginary monsters, all the mythical storyline looks real, and superhero movies lately started to make sense. Of course, we are not five, we don't believe such circumstances, but what we believe by watching the superhero movies lately is that the creators are able to convince that superheroes are no longer children's consumption, the grown-ups are welcome to enjoy it as well. The casts here played their role with perfect proportion, Selma Blair is terrific as Liz. Well, we will see a different woman than a girl who got stuck by her earing in a man's p**** a few years ago in The Sweetest Thing. What a dumb movie. So does Doug Jones who seems to be an expert to play Del Toro's imaginary characters. Pearlman is engaging with his role as Hellboy, carried the burden and executed it well.

Del Toro did his thing. We all know that he is an expert in this department. But have you ever wondered that he will delivered the same monsters we saw in his previous movies back in the other movie, always with the same style? Well, there is still The Hobbit to catch on. I hope he will do something a little bit different, and stick to the novel.

Generally, Hellboy II: The Golden Army is one of the best summer movies. Now that summer is over, I can proudly say that this summer is THE BEST SUMMER OF THE LAST FIVE YEARS.

But you should know, it is his destiny to bring about the destruction of the Earth...not now, not tomorrow but soon enough.

My Review

With the director Tim Burton and the composer Danny Elfman, we all have imagined Big Fish to be a NICE EDWARD SCISSORHANDS ENCORE. The truth is, not exactly an encore, but still supplied with the same tone, heartwarming fairy tale for all ages, and Burton-Elfman-ish style.

Adapted from a book by Daniel Wallace, Burton convinced us that the movie is at least as good as the book, without losing his directing style in each angles. The UNIQUE storyline with imaginative characters were represent well by Burton into the screen of a movie. I haven't watched the book yet, but I'm sure that the movie Big Fish is exactly what the readers hope. Bunch of great casts, and memorable quotes, deeply acted, and well executed. But what I concern about is, I'm afraid that after a few years, Big Fish will be only well remebered as another hot job from Burton, a nice Scissorhands' follower, and then there will be nothing much left about it, becuase it is not as good as Scissorhands is every way.

Albert Finney gave a perfect performance as the older Edward Bloom, his performance was REMARKABLE. And to mention Jessica Lange and Ewan McGregor which gave honorable pwerformances, supported the movie well, quite convincing. Helena Bonham Carter is without any doubt, a true actress, she nailed all her roles in every movies she played well. But, only heaven knows whether she got her roles here because of her quality, or well, nepotism. I mean, first this Big Fish, and then Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd. But who cares, I'm sure she'll be as great as she is now without staying under Burton's shadow.

Overall Big Fish is a fairy tale with a troop of great casts (means you don't have to worry about the actings development, they are all in the good hands). ANOTHER 'BIG' WORK OF ART FROM BURTON.

I was thinking about death and all. About seeing how you're gonna die. I mean, on one hand, if dying was all you thought about, it could kind of screw you up. But it could kind of help you, couldn't it? Because you'd know that everything else you can survive.

My Review

Well, I won't lie to you pretending that I know much about ABBA songs. From the total 17 songs sang in this movie, let's see, 5 sounds familiar to me. But it doesn't make me enjoy the movie less. True, Mamma Mia! The Movie is one of the FEEL GOOD-MOVIE of the year that is suitable to be watched for relaxing and recreational purpose.

Mamma Mia! The Movie is not the giant in last summer competition. It is more like a BLACK HORSE that wins our heart over the "comedy" Hancock, the only thing funny about it is that Will Smith and Charlize Theron were willing to play in such movie its level. Like it or not, we have to compare Mamma Mia! with its former, Across The Universe which carried The Beatles songs back on track. Which is better? It's your call to pick. No one knocked out another. But maybe I have to disagree with some people that I still pick this one over Universe.

Why?

Across The Universe is more to be the grown-ups consumption, and Mamma Mia! aims the more universal target. Universe should learn more that a movie is not only worth if it is artistic, unique, or different. Mamma Mia! should win this part. It knows how to speak in a universal language, that everybody will love. That's why.

Meryl Streep gave an honorable performance, definitely not her best, but still, we see Streep as an actress who can act as everyone, no matter it is different than her previous works, she is delightful here, without putting off her charisma. What surprised me is Seyfried which is act beautifully here, surprisingly fit the script, and perfect for the role. Mamma Mia! should be a stepping stone for her serious career as an actress, asking us to see her more seriously, and turn into the image of serious actress. Brosnan? He is beautiful, he is. He is not the only one who can play the role, but, I appreciate that he is willing to put off his guns and now we can see a James Bond singing and dancing around, eventhough still, it still far from being perfect. Walters and Baranski is playing the SCENE STEALER here, the jokes were working, I laughed a lot at their scenes.

At last, forget or your problems and stick to the scenes where we can find a lot of fun, good ABBA songs (don't blink an eye at Dancing Queen, Voulez-Vous, The Winner Takes It All, Honey Honey, and S.O.S) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WHO SEEK FOR A REFRESHMENT.

Honey, I didn't have a choice. I couldn't go home. When I was pregnant, my mother told me not to bother coming back. And I wouldn't have had it any other way, God, look what we've had!

And they both learn that if one of them asks to get out of the marriage, the other will get the money. So they each try to drive the other to want to get out of the marriage.

My Review

Seriously, should it be released in Valentine's Day? After all, they always dig for money, money, and money. I'm speechless, well, how many times have we seen stuffs like this? None in the Hollywood's Golden Era, but after the late 90's? PLENTY. I can't exactly mention which movie started first, but as long as I'm concerned, it started sweet at first, but romantic comedies are getting TASTELESS AND RAW over the years.

Obviously, this What Happens in Vegas added a contribution to that long list. Still, it is entertaining, for a moment. Then? FORGETTABLE. Someday, soon, we will find ourselves asking,

"What? The scene in the toilet? No, no, I think it's from 27 Dresses." And the second person will say, "No, no. I think it is from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." The third person said, "Maybe it is from What Happens in Vegas."

All the rom-com just mixed up in our minds so badly, so that someday, it will take a long time to recognize each movies.

Ashton Kutcher here is nothing more than a sweet eye candy for some people, his acting is getting better, a little, still, he is not as hilarious as he think he is. Cameron Diaz, she is a rom-com sweetheart, but yes, she is overpaid, and if she keeps letting herself drowning into the same typical characters all over again, what will she do after she's 50? Take a step like Keaton did in Something's Gotta Give? Uh-oh, not so working, Cam.

My advice, if you're looking for an escapade after an exhausting week, see this. It will no longer stuck in your mind after another one week. It is just a FLASHY-FLASHY ENTERTAINMENT FOR YOUR MIND.

You know what? I can get a couple guys to go to his place, knock on the door and when he opens it wham! We junk-punch him in his man buisness and he'll fall to the floor crying "why?!" and then we'll say "you know why!" Huh?

Taken - PG-13 He has four days to find his daughter.

Taken is a FEEL-GOOD action movie who gives you thrill and suspense. But I advice you not to think about this movie over again, because you'll find it RIDICULOUS and non-sense.

Liam Neeson played good as a former spy, Bryan, who tried to save his daughter (played by Grace) who's kidnapped in Paris. Well, I don't have to tell the whole story because, well, you know the rest. Neeson acted good, as always, and his co-star Famke Janssen gave a nice acting, but I'll stick to the furious Dark Phoenix. You know what's a relieve? That Holly Valance only played maybe 10 minutes in this movie or she will accompany Maggie Grace to make us hope that their characters would be killed in the middle of the movie. And the bad news is, this is a movie for those who determined to kill themselves by saving others' lives, facing the bad guys, and stuff, cause they'll learn that it is a heroic action and they would not be dead. Cause you know why? Liam Neeson's character was facing the bullets million times in a row, but do you know who got shot? The villains. It looks like no matter how many the villains are, how many the bullets are flying toward him, HE IS SAVE! Yeay! Let's celebrate! You know what? WE'RE NOT FIVE ANYMORE!

Overall, the script was dull, there were encores from another thriller-oh-so-heroic movies. And you will guess the plot so easily, unless you haven't seen a movie in your whole life. So? TWO STARS, ONLY TO APPRECIATE LIAM NEESON.

I said I was coming.

My Review

I have no idea how to start my words about The Dark Knight. You've seen the 5 stars above, I think that's what BEST DESCRIBES the movie. Here are a few thoughts:

- THE BEST SUPERHERO-SLASH-COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER MADE.
- THE BEST 2008's SUMMER MOVIE SO FAR. For the record, I haven't seen Wall-E.
- THE BEST THAT HEATH LEDGER EVER DONE FOR HIS CAREER.

Another fact about The Dark Knight is, that after the movie, we will NEVER see The Joker as one of the Batman villain, considering him as another Scarecrow, another The Riddler, or (wait, I'm going to say this dreadful nightmare...) Mr. Freeze. Instead, we will see The Joker as what? A LEGEND.

Yes, I know the buzzes and promotions maybe made some of you (especially a non-fanatic-fan of Batman) sick, of the exposure of The Joker character and all, but I GUARANTEE, you'll know why after you see the movie, and hear the laughter of The Joker by your own ears, and experience the movie by your own eyes. Jack Nicholson who've been involved in movies, three times more than Ledger, and received Oscar nominations for twelve times more than Ledger, didn't even close to beat the half of Ledger's charisma here. HE WAS BORN DO PLAY THE JOKER. (I don't think I should bring up the Oscar buzz right now, Ledger's fantastic, but it still too close to call.)

I'm always a fan of Nolan's works. He directed many movies in different genre, but he always carries his Midas touch in everything he touches, they became gold. But this Dark Knight, is his MASTERPIECE. (Yes, said it already, IT IS A MASTERPIECE.) I believe this statement does not only come out from a tired girl which still feeling the euphoria after watching, but, I mean it.

The script was too BRILLIANT to be compared with another superhero movies, including today's hit Iron Man, which is, nothing, compared to the Jonathan-Christopher Nolan's job. I mean, where would we find a superhero movie, a movie which adapted from a comic book for children's consumption, and carries such high-grade humanity, complex and realistic storyline, along with the beautiful screenplay to be spoken in every minutes of its bites? NO WHERE BUT HERE. The characters' development were digged until the deepest depth, which played by the actors convincingly. Freeman and Caine repeated their role fine, the other new cast for Harvey Dent Aaron Eckhart was fit to the role, with no such costly exploitation like what they did with the Three Villain Disaster Venom-Sandman-New Goblin in that dumby-grumpy Spider-Man 3. And it's time for Nolan to learn from his own fault, that casting Katie Holmes to play Rachel Dawes is not a very wise decision (terrible and dumb, actually) and that he should find an actress who can act without ruining the movie. Gyllenhaal gives a new fresh air for the character, the lovable one. And the music score? Who would expect better than a James Newton Howard-Hans Zimmer collaboration?

I made myself clear enough above, and I obviously hoping for an improvement for the third installment. (you guys have to do a very tough job) And most of all, WE BELIEVE IN NOLAN.

You've changed things... forever. There's no going back. See, to them, you're just a freak... like me!

My Review

I'm sorry for adding this here before, but I am very pissed that one of the local magazine gave The Dark Knight 4 stars, and gave last summer disappoinment Hancock 5 stars?? I mean, uh, I don't know how to describe it.

Okay, back to the movie itself, Wall-E. When I watched this movie, I found that apparently these days, computer has something more REAL than what a human can deliver. May I give a conclusion about last summer's result. The best goes to The Dark Knight dan Wall-E.

The statement which said that Wall-E is the best animated summer movie is simply dull. This animated MASTERPIECE (yes, I DARE to say that) is more than just an aimated creatures in the screen who entertain, that's not what it made for. See, Wall-E was released in the perfect time where we should questions people's humanity about littering, and most of all, about a love, telling all us that all of us can give some love.

Yes, Kung-Fu Panda entertained us somewhere 2 months ago, but Wall-E proves that little creatures with little dialogs can show many to the viewers what the movie made of, and made for. Not only to mock the familia of Meet Dave, Norbit, Date Movie, Superhero Movie, Epic Movie (well, you get the point), but Wall-E also made for something deeper that just watching movies, and besides the go green part which I fully support, but an entertainment to TOUCH EVERYONE, AND MAKE SOME DIFFERENCE TO OUR SKEPTICALS IN LOVE.

Eeeeeva?

Almost Famous - R Experience it. Enjoy it. Just don't fall for it.

DIRECTED BY: Cameron Crowe
STARRING: Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Frances McDormand, Zooey Deschanel, Anna Paquin, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Synopsis

Writer and director Cameron Crowe's experiences as a teenage rock journalist -- he was a regular contributor to Rolling Stone while still in high school -- inspired this coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy hitting the road with an up-and-coming rock band in the early 1970s. Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand) strict single parent whose distrust of rock music has helped to drive a wedge between herself and her two children, Anita (Zooey Deschanel) and William (Patrick Fugit). Anita rebels by dropping out of school and becoming a stewardess, but William makes something of his love of rock & roll by writing album reviews for a local underground newspaper. William's work attracts the attention of Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman), editor of renegade rock magazine Creem, who takes William under his wing and gives him his first professional writing assignment -- covering a Black Sabbath concert. While William is unable to score an interview with the headliners, the opening act, Stillwater, are more than happy to chat with a reporter, even if he's still too young to drive, and William's piece on the group in Creem gains him a new admirer, an editor at Rolling Stone offers William an assignment for a 3,000-word cover story on Stillwater, and over the objections of his mother , and after some stern advice from Bangs, Williams joins Stillwater on tour, where he becomes friendly with guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee). William also becomes enamored of Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), a Band Aid traveling with the band who is no older than William, but is deeply involved with Russell. Lester Bangs and Ben Fong-Torres, incidentally, were real-life rock writers Crowe worked with closely during his days as a journalist.

My Review

Almost Famous is one of some real proves in the existancy of wheel of life. What I'm trying to say here is, you see Cameron Crowe here, and you see him 5 years later in Elizabethtown. Got the idea? If you haven't, let me make this clearer that Almost Famous is a real PIECE OF WORK and Elizabethtown is RUBBISH.

The whole idea is BRILLIANT, about the lives of rockstars, the rise and fall and all is really caught me. This is why I put Cameron Crowe as a good director in my list, his work here is untouchable, way too far from his downfall in Elizabethtown. I'm sorry, I just still don't get why those great directors who have gained good movies want able to cast Orlando Bloom as the lead actor in their movies. (NOTED: Ridley Scott-Kingdom of Heaven, Cameron Crowe-Elizabethtown) And thank God that the Penny Lane role was not given to Kirsten Dunst who was rumored to play the role, instead, she played in (again) Elizabethtown 5 years later. Bloom + Dunst = EARLY DOOMSDAY. Smart choice, Crowe! (total joking)

Back to the movie, Almost Famous gives a well written script, solid casts (the great actings from Frances McDormand and Kate Hudson, both deserve the Oscar Nomination), good rock musics, and the 70's set works. What I concern about is Anna Paquin that she should given more role here. She's a great actress (an Oscar in her age of 11 by the movie The Piano), it's a great start of career for the young girl. But until now, she mostly only known as the girl named Rogue in the X-Men series. She should be a promising Hollywood talent.

The characters bond to each other, but of course Penny Lane, played by Hudson, got the center of attention. This is the best Hudson's performance in a movie. The character's chemistry with Russell Hammond, played by Crudup is inevitable. Both barely speaks, but I guess Crowe got a great sense of picking the great actors for the roles ONCE. (I guess you all know why I bolded, biggered, and underlined the word)

Overall Almost Famous is a movie with interesting characters about how life can turn into, possibilities and most of all, ALMOST FAMOUS MADE A SPOT IN 2000's BEST LIST.

You CANNOT make friends with the rock stars. That's what's important. If you're a rock journalist - first, you will never get paid much. But you will get free records from the record company. And they'll buy you drinks, you'll meet girls, they'll try to fly you places for free, offer you drugs... I know. It sounds great. But they are not your friends. These are people who want you to write sanctimonious stories about the genius of the rock stars, and they will ruin rock and roll and strangle everything we love about it.

Death Defying Acts - PG Love is inescapable.

DIRECTED BY: Gillian Armstrong
STARRING: Guy Pearce, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Saoirse Ronan, Timothy Spall

Synopsis

My Brilliant Career, Oscar and Lucinda director Gillian Armstrong explores the final feat of the greatest illusionist ever to deceive a live audience in this docudrama concerning Harry Houdini's obsessive quest to find proof of an afterlife. The year is 1926, and Houdini (Guy Pearce) is an international superstar. Not only does the illusionist's otherworldly ability to bend reality hold audiences completely enthralled, but his easy charm finds him winning the hearts of his growing legion of fans as well. Yet behind Houdini's winning smile resides the restless heart of a tortured soul. Isolated by fame and drowning in regret over having not been present to hear his mother's last words, Houdini sets out in tour of Scotland and announces that he will pay 10,000 dollars to anyone who can prove spiritual contact with his deceased mother. But in his determination to prove that there is life after death, Houdini also becomes the target of countless charlatans, scam artists, and self-proclaimed spiritualists. Of course, stunning psychic Mary McGarvie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her daughter/sidekick, Benji (Saoirse Ronan), seem remarkably sincere in their supernatural talents, yet that doesn't mean that the pair doesn't have their own ulterior motives for making a connection with the world-famous magic man.

My Review

A moment before I started to review this movie, I took a look at my rating system, and found a proper rating for this movie. "A HAMBURGER WITHOUT MEAT INSIDE ITS BUN," it says. And that's what I found on this movie. SOULLESS. I enjoyed it more that Hancock, but why do I give these the same rating? Well, I'm trying to be a little miss objective. Death Defying Acts is a movie with serious dialogs for the one and a half hours of its running time, and if we look from its genre, Death Defying Acts was meant to touch the viewers like The Prestige, or a suspense drama such as Mystic River. But we can find its dullness right from the title (I mean, Death Defying Acts? Even my little brother can find something better with more curiousity inside of it.)

I don't blame the idea for the failure. And Houdini's end quotes seem interesting to me so fro a moment I thought it was an OKAY movie. It's just they force the whole Houdini's great life stories to fit in the small box they prepared for this movie. May I tell them that it's not enough to hire an actress like Catherine Zeta-Jones to make things work. They still need a better script, a more suitable actor to play Houdini, and someone else to do the Scottish accent.

Zeta-Jones, she is a GREAT actress, and I will love her role as much as I love other roles she had if only the movie is setted with British accent. However an actress is no God, she can't speak decent Scottish accent in just a few month of character development and voila, she speaks like a Scottish breed. And so what happened to Saoirse Ronan. She is in the top of her career after Atonement and SHE ENCORES THE GREATNESS OF HER ROLE THERE. Just I prefer hear her in her original American accent, or at least British wouldn't kill her performance. And what's so frightening about the movie is that they seem to be running out of money to hire someone better, who has more charisma, or at least older that Pearce to do the role. This is one of, what do they call it, A FAILURE TO PORTRAY A LEGEND.

So overall, Death Defying Acts is no The Prestige. Although it's not Nolan's best, but still, it is slightly better in everyway compared to this another mediocre movie that Zeta-Jones picked after her Oscar-ly performance in Chicago. I'm just hoping that she will not be another actress who got an Oscar curse and whose career will be drowned after they get THE HIGHEST APPRECIATION THEY CAN GIVE FOR MOVIE WORKERS.

May God have mercy... On my immortal soul.
