I didn't see this film until only 5 years ago. I was born in 81 and because of that, the films of that year will always be of special importance to me. Everything from the casting to the awesome location is spectacular. The story is the strongest thing the film has going for it. Just don't read too much into the title..although a very smart one..
There is little blood and gore, but that is not what sold this film to me. It is the whacky dialogue, the cool, but somewhat dorky characters and the awesome location that won me over. If you can ignore the production values within a film and admire it's heart and soul, you might actually like this one.
I could watch Marilyn Burns being chased through fields by a chain-saw wielding maniac for hours. The hitch-hiker(family memeber) was awesomely crazy just like the wheel chair boy taking a piss was funny. TTCM is one of my all time favorite genre films and it definitely deserves more words than this, but I'll leave it at this for now.....
My fav HORROR film to come from asia. Not for it's gore, or frightening elements, but for the compelling story telling and beautiful cinematography. I can't even call this a horror film, for it add's a little amount of sci-fi with as much amounts of art house, and I could still easily rank this in my top 10 films. Every shot is so beautiful to look at and you might even find a few hidden suprises in some. The ending makes complete sence to me, for there doen't always have to be answers in fiction, nor real life. I'm sick of people(scientist who find answers) acting like the concept of a 'God'. HAVE WE NOT LEARNT FROM HISTORY.hehe. Lets hope the US don't make a dumbed down version of this gem like they do with every remake they do. Hollywood must think their audience is stupid or something.
Wow. I had been waiting for the region 4 release for ages and now finally I have it. The best thing to happen to slasher films since Wes Craven's Scream. Although Scream wasn't at all original nor superb, but it did create a small slasher hysteria in the 90's which the mainstream eventually grew bored with due to the dull remakes that followed and continues to this day. There was a brief revival of slasher flicks too. Who cares. We now have Behind The Mask. It does smell of that I KNOW IT ALL/PARODIES formular Wes Craven squeezed into Scream and that is why I love his film and why I like Scream. This is in my opinion one of the best things to have happend to the modern SLASHER genre since Wes Cravens slasher fest of the 90's..
I loved Labyrinth as a kid and still do now. Jennifer Connely is awesome and plays these types of roles perfectly. Just watch Argento's 'Phenomena' and see for yourself. She is right at home. Bowies voice doesn't have the same affect on me as it did when I was younger, but he did a great job. I only purchased the dvd a year ago and just watched it for the first time since my childhood. I love it.
This has always been a cult classic of mine ever since I saw the original Australian VHS version with the picture that slightly pokes out of the cover. I must have been only 10 if that, but can remember pestering my parents to let me borrow it from my Dad's cousin who we used to visit at least twice a year on the south coast. I could never remember much from the film, but it was mainly the cover that appealed to me since it stood out from the large western collection he had. Now ever since I brought the dvd I have been watching it once a year for almost 4 years and always during the Yule Tide festivities. It's a guilty pleasure of mine and brings back great child hood memories from around those years. It's not the greatest slasher flick and has a basic plot. The films starts on christmas eve 1971 with a family on their way home from a visit to see their granddad at the nut-house. They are flagged down by a drunk dressed as St Nick. He takes advantage of Dad and puts a hole in his head. Young Billy runs off and hides in the shrub as the jolly attacker tries to rape his mum. He tears off her clothes, but she gets in a punch, so the jolly attacker slits her throat. All seen by poor little Billy. After this he grows up in an orphanage run by over-moralistic Nun's, where he is whipped and punished for his sins. Growing up in fear we cut to when he is 18 and unleashed into the world. He is given a job at a toy store and it is at a work party where he is asked to dress as Santa and this is when his persona takes a turn for the worst. All of the emotional pain, all the fear, it comes back. That is how it goes. The gore and the way the victims are dispatched are standard even for the 80's, but that is not why this film is so notorious. Many christian groups disliked this and even had it banned, but they had the wrong motives. All they saw was that the film may bring bad publicity to their religion and/or saw the movie as dangerous. Unfortunately for them there is nothing to be said about religious groups in it. There was no axe to grind. It was just a drunk santa who dressed as St Nick like many other homeless/drunks do on christmas eve to make money, but this one was a killer who killed Billy's family and unfortunately because of poor Billy's circumstances while growing up he could not rid the emotional pain caused from those events in his life. Despite the overall mediocre feel of the film and acting it is well worth checking out...
The perfect slasher film. The Italians at the time of this release where mainly known for three things: Giallo, ultra gory Zombie flicks or shocking Cannibal features. While the slasher genre was taking off in the US thanks to the success of Halloween and Friday the 13th it was time for Joe D'Amato to step in and show the world the Italians can deliver slasher greatness too. The amazing island location and gore scenes are what make this so special to me. Damn! The taking of a fetus from a pregnant womens womb and then the eating of it by the killer near the end was superb. It is definitely one of those WTF moments in film. Man, he doesn't cut her open to get to it he actually shoves his hand up her snatch and pulls it out! Every genre fan has got to see this early 80's classic.
