Meet the Spartans
by ErikThe bigger the hit, the harder they fall....IT'S A "300" SPOOF! "Meet The Spartans" takes an anachronistic focus to parody the historic 480 BC event of the Battle of Thermophylae. The mighty Persian Empire- complete with an army that includes Ghost Rider, Rocky Balboa, and the Transformers- is about to invade Sparta, and the battle begins. Humor and more humor, which made me laugh throughout the movie, abound, including comical killer fights and dance battles between the Persians and the Spartans and pop culture references ranging from YouTube to "American Idol". But most importantly, self-sacrifice is the greatest glory in the battlefield, and it's all done by the heroic King Leonidas and his 13 Spartan soldiers. That's right, Leo headed just 13 Spartans- I have no idea whatever happened to the other 287 (287 + 13 = 300). But still, I think "Meet The Spartans" is anachronistically funny stuff....ahahahahaha.... :-D
"Meet The Spartans" is directed by Jason Friedburg and Aaron Selzer, two of the six guys responsible for writing "Scary Movie" and saw the real "300" as part of the filmmaking process. The acting performances are very good to reach its best comedic quality. Sean Maguire's Leonidas' character reminds me of a comedic version of Gerard Butler in his "300" role. Carmen Electra acts as the Queen Margo who is a comedic version of Gorgo. Ken Davitian's Xerxes character (yes, that chubby guy) still has that fresh Middle Eastern-sounding Azamat accent from "Borat". Kevin Sorbo, fresh from his "Hercules" back in the 1990s, made a great return to Greek history by acting as Leonidas' loyal captain. And all of the featured celebrities, including the hunchbacked Paris Hilton and that Britney Spears look-alike at the pit, really do look like the originals, although they're played by different people. The film dialogue's very funny- I'm glad that the immortal "300" quote of "THIS IS SPARTA!" still remains.
Many critics said that this "300" parody was pretty bad for either the absence or the overuse of in-jokes, but I actually find it pretty good for making fun of history and that recent Spartan epic blockbuster. Any historical inaccuracies in comedy and I'll enjoy it anyways. If you like historical sagas, spoof comedies, or both, take a good view of "Meet The Spartans" today. It'll make you laugh out loud.Hey, you should really see this!
