8 1/2 - Unrated This is the story of a film director who's lost his creativity and is struggling to finish his new film (which is based on his own life).
At 2h30 its a little difficult to watch because the narrative is broken up by the directors memories and fantasies.
However, there is just something about that film which makes you not care that it may seem a little random. It just keeps you sat there, always watching, letting the images flow through your mind.
A great film from one of the best directors of all time.

Avatar - PG-13 I'm not sure why, but I really wanted this film to go against its hype and to dislike it. However, that was not the case. Although the story is nothing really new, this film gets big points in other areas.
Obviously, its extremely well shot- the visuals are amazing really. The blend of soulful music and strong, vibrant colours everywhere make it a very powerful/beautiful thing to watch.
I thought Sam Worthington was very good indeed, as were most of the actors in fact. Yes, even Michelle Rodriguez who was as hilarious as ever.
My only issue is that I just dont get the whole 3D thing. It certainly didn't seem anything amazing, in fact it was pretty lacklustre. In my opinion, nothing really came out at you so there was no real need for it. Possibly its better in IMAX, I'm not sure. I just feel I would've enjoyed it just as much (and my eyes wouldv'e been more comfortable) seeing it in 2D.
This is though an exceptional film to watch, and one that will fill your heart with joy.

Blade Runner - R I'd been waiting a while to see this, and the word that most came to mind was "weird". I'm not sure I quite...got it, really. However, its very well shot & theres some good acting- particularly when Hauer goes a bit Jack Torrance at the end. January 4, 2010

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride - PG The word to use for this film is "nice". It was nothing special, and not a patch on some of Burton's other works. But it's an okay way to spend 90mins if you've nothing else to do. January 4, 2010

Paranormal Activity - R This review is for the daft people who let themselves be taken in by all the hype:

I hate horror films, so why did I want to go and see this so much? What was so attractive about it? As a scary film, this works fairly well- there are a couple of very frightening scenes (but mostly in the last 20mins or so). That's why a lot of people feel short-changed, because they were disappointed that the film didn't live up to expectations. If you actually sit back and think about it though, it IS one of the scariest films ever made.

Why this film worked so well, is that it was a huge psychological test. It's not the scenes WITHIN the film that are supposed to scare you- it's the after effects. The reason it is so scary, is because it's simple. Simplicity is key here because there is nothing to tell you that you're actually watching a film.

When you look at it, what do you have? 1h40 of home videos. There's no recognisable actors to say "yeah this is a movie you're watching". There's no creepy music to set the scene (the only sounds you ever hear, with the exception of dialogue, are creaks, bumps and screams). You never see "the entity", which helps in two ways. 1, any CGI would let you know immediately that this was a film. 2, it stops it becoming some silly Scooby-Doo mystery. Trust me, your mind will create a monster far more scary than the CGI team ever could.

There aren't even any credits! So why, after the film ended, the screen went black and the lights came up, did everyone feel very, very unnerved? It's because there was nothing in this film to distinguish it from reality.

THAT is why you're mind percieves this as scary. Because the usual signals that you're watching a nice little fantasy, which will soon end, and you can go back to you're reality, don't exist. The lack of credits mean there's no break between the "film" and "reality". As far as your mind is aware, this was a series of REAL home movies made by some people in America. As far as your mind is aware, this wasn't just a story, this could happen to you.

So, if you're going to watch this because people have told you it's scary then you're going to be disapointed. Because you're already expecting what's coming. However if you actually take a look at what you just watched, the simplicity, the reality behind it, it becomes very scary indeed.

P.S. I defy anyone to not be creeped out by Katie's WEIRD smile near the end as she lies in bed, refusing to go to a hotel. I also defy them to not be scared by the last 5 minutes- her terrifying scream of Micha's name (the most chilling scream I've ever heard) followed by his footsteps running downstairs, a crash, silence, heavy footsteps back up the stairs, and a body flying at the screen.

P.P.S. I felt there was also some comedy in this film. I don't think you can have a horror without some alleviation from the scares, with the use of comedy. For me, the "funny" parts were things like the "entity" clearly running away in an "oh crap, I didn't do it" fashion, after setting fire to the ouija board.

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'tis (Welcome to the Land of Shtis) (Welcome to the Sticks) - Unrated This was alright, very funny in places (probably less so if you don't study languages, I guess). Not the amazing film that I'd been told it was though. December 5, 2009

Entre les Murs (The Class) - PG-13 Winner of the 2008 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this is an excellent film about like in a French school.
If you don't study the language or culture, some of the jokes might be missed. But don't let that stop you from watching this, it is extremely funny & full of drama.

Jennifer's Body - R A bit of a mixed bag, this film was funny (mostly down to Diablo Cody's writting), quite creepy in places and, more importantly, not so cheesy that it was un-watchable.
Unfortunately there was just...something...missing from it. I'm really not sure what, but the film lacked an aspect that would have made it a lot better. It doesn't hurt to have Amanda Seyfried in a film either.

Hard Candy - R I'd been wanting to see this for a while, and when I finally did...well, I thought it was unbelievable. When you consider this is a very simple plot (smart teenage girl finds and takes hostage the man she believes to be a paedophile), with just 2 main characters (and only 5 in total) shot in just 3 or 4 different places, this is exceptionally well made.
The tension brought out is amazing. The scene where she's about to "cut" Jeff is so long and tense-filled it's one of the most difficult, painful scenes I've ever seen.
Patrick Wilson is pretty good, but Ellen Page really shows just how great an actress she is. And the whole thing is beautifully shot, from the sweeping camera, via the switch to blue-tinted lens, to the black silhouetted shot of Jeff's death.
This is a sweet, innocent-looking but very, very disturbing film that deserves to be watched.
