District 9 - R Now THIS is how you go about making a film. Take a new twist on an old story, put it in a completely unusual setting, add non-professional actors, with genuine talent (and fantastically odd accents) & wrap it all up with some great special effects.
I think the fact it was based somewhere like Johannesburg worked well, otherwise it would have just been a run-of-the-mill "homegrown American hero saves America (and obviously then, the world) from anihilation".
I know there's a few people who don't like the way it shifted from being political satire to an proper action film, but I don't see it that way. I definitely didn't notice it when watching it in the cinema. I think a few people need to stop looking for faults at every opportunity & just sit back and watch the film.
In fact I thought this satirical commentary ran throughout the film, but the way the action, suspense & definite humour was factored in was brilliant. And there's no end to the praise for Sharlto Copley's talent here.
I looked forward to seeing this for a very long time, and I was not dissapointed one little bit.

Dracula cerca sangue di vergine... e morė di sete!!!, (Andy Warhol's Dracula) - R Ummm- a very weird/strange film. Not bad though- although I was unbelievably disapointed with the, quite frankly, rather stupid ending (where the almighty Dracula gets his limbs ridiculously sliced off- like the Black Knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail- by a stupid, rapist, Italian farm-hand with an American accent). Mesrine: L'Ennemi Public n°1 (Mesrine: Part 2 - Public Enemy #1) - R I thought this was absolutely fantastic and, in my opinion, even better than part 1. Even though it was just as dark, it didn't seem that way as there was more wit, more humour. And I believe that knowing what was going to happen at the end didn't take any of the tension away, in fact I think it increased it.
Even if you haven't seen Part 1, this is complete enough that it doesn't matter. This doesn't rely on people having to have seen what comes before (although it does make it a better experience).
I would thorougly recommend both of the Mesrine's as superb, suspensful, action-filled, humourous, genuine gangster films.

Little Miss Sunshine - R I didn't really get the hype with this film. It was fairly enjoyable, but isn't one I'd watch over and over again. September 5, 2009

Domino - R At just 127 mins long, this film seems to take up an entire lifetime to tell its story. Loosely based on the life of bounty hunter Domino Harvey, this should have been an interesting, action-filled, edge-of-the-seat kind of film. How on Earth Tony Scott managed to mash it into a long, weary, completely dull affair is beyond me.
I'm not saying it's short of action- far from it. But it is overshadowed by the over-complicated story, and the fact that the characters themselves have to virtually stop the film about 4 or 5 times for an "explain-what's-happening-to-each-other-so-the-viewers-can-understand-the-plot monologue".
Another error was having the 1st few scenes taken from the last 1/3 of the plot. Meaning the next hour and a half (or day and a half, I wasn't quite sure) had to be spent weaving the convoluted back-story.
There were one or two highlights though, including "remove the right arm", a very good performance from Keira Knightley, and the relief of the end credits. Always good to see Christopher Walken, as well.
Normally I would say don't bother watching this. But I actually urge people to go and rent it- if only so that people learn from Scott's mistakes & nothing like this ever gets made again.

10 Rillington Place - PG Not the best film, which was a shame given the subect. This is a story of serial killer John Christie, who murdered women in his flat.
After killing the wife & child of a new tenant, he framed the husband who subsequently was hanged.
When the police later found the other bodies, Christie confessed all & it was realised that a great miscarriage of justice had taken place.
This hanging of an innocent man was one of the reasons for the suspension of Capital Punishment in the UK.
The real reason this is a film to watch though, is the excellent & very creepy performance from Richard Attenborough.

Volver - R This is the 1st Almodóvar that I'd seen, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
Although it's quite a depressing story in many ways, theres an almost unnoticeable air of good-will that keeps this light-hearted enough to be enjoyed. A feat that not many seem to be able to accomplish.

Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy - PG-13 I was really disapointed by this. After hearing about how funny it was, my expectations were high.
Unfortunately the only real laughs came from an excellent Steve Carrell.
