Crash - R A bit of a tough film to watch, but very interesting nontheless. Dealing with the complex world of racial stereotyping and prejudices and showing how overtly racist people can unltimately have a good heart, while those who believe themselves to not be racist can actually have huge prejudices. Man on Wire - PG-13 A fantastic documentary, wonderfully made & very enjoyable to watch. August 5, 2009

The Negotiator - R Absolutely love this film. A great suspense thriller. Spacey and Jackson are as on form as always.
For those fans of CSI- watch for the small cameos from Robert David Hall (Doc Robbins) and Paul Guilfoyle (Capn Brass).

Wanted - R This film was better than I'd thought it would be. I really enjoyed it.
With a lot of films like this (where you need to supsend disbelief a little- i.e. accepting that bullets can be curved) the action/suspense doesn't make up for the plot-holes. You start to get a little bored & begin pointing out things that don't work.
However, this film had enough action and humour to overcome that problem. It was a lot funnier than it looks.
One small reservation though, is that it felt like it was missing a little something. Obviously time had to be spent on Wesley's background/training, etc. But the rest of the plot felt a little...rushed. Perhaps another 10-15mins spent on cool assassinations would have helped just fill it out a bit more.
However, overall it's a really decent film & definitely worth watching (even if only for the awesome scoop-someone-into-the-passenger-seat-then-flip-the-car-onto-a-bus-and-drive-off-the-side sequence :-D).

The Escapist - Unrated A very good film indeed. Great turns from Brian Cox & (the ever so slightly psychotic) Damian Lewis.
Loved the ending. Nice little twist.

Garden State - R A slightly weird but really nice film. Another great performance from Natalie Portman but I now think Zach Braff is a lot better than people give him credit for. July 25, 2009

Lost In Translation - R A nice, quiet, tranquil little film. Bill Murray was very funny, bouncing jokes and one liners off of everything. June 25, 2009

The Beach - R Definitely not what I was expecting. An interesting film about the notion of striving for perfection and the harsh reality that (once it has been reached) a human will always either want more, or fuck up what they have. I particularly enjoyed the 2nd half, which is very good indeed.
DiCaprio was fairly decent and reminded me in some close up scenes (in the way he spoke/acted) of Matt Damon in Bourne.
Sadly, I wish Robert Carlyles role was bigger. He was very very funny. An underrated actor I think.

There's Something About Mary - R Completely ridiculous, of course, but good fun. Chris Elliot (who I mistook for Paul Giamatti) was hilarious.
Not reeeally my type of film, but one that has to be watched I think.

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) - PG-13 I really didn't know how to rate this film- it was a bit of a difficult one.
I mean it's good, no doubt. Great in fact. Very emotional and a proper survivors story.
But it was just a little tough and...agonizing...to watch. As things were so slow (which has a reason, obviously).
Definitely worth a watch. But beware- the story will suck you in so much you won't realise the end is coming.

Paris Je T'aime - R Spectacular. So, so clever. Some of these mini-films were a little odd, but all were amazing (ie the mime one). The Coen Bros/Bescemi one was hilarious. Loved how (because Buscemi was the American tourist who didn't understand French) they had no subtitles. Also, the woman feeling guilty seemingly about leaving her husband was quite clever.
Loved the heavily accented French of the American woman in the last one as well- reminds us what we sounded like at school.
A brilliant, brilliant film.

Twilight - PG-13 I really thought this would be the kind of teeney-flick that I despise, and would thus be a eyesore in the Vampire genre I enjoy so much.
I was absolutely, 100% mistaken. Firstly, this was quite an arty film, which I loved (the sliences letting you listen to just outside sounds, or the striking contrast between pale & vibrant colours used)- but it was arty without being stuck-up and pretentious.
I enjoyed the story, but thought it was lifted by the very decent acting of Robert Pattinson and (especially) Kirsten Stewart. She played the part brilliantly, in my opinion. I also loved the new excuse as to why vampires can't go into sunlight (in contrast to the blade-style "they'll burn to a crisp" excuse).
After all the hype, I really thought this would be a let-down, but it is definitely worth watching & I will be looking out for sequel news.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) - R I'm not sure whether it was the way it was filmed, the music, or what. But I found this a really beautiful film. Had been wanting to watch it for a long time, and I'm very glad I got the chance.
Such a shame Muhe (Wiesler) died so soon after. Apparently he had once been under surveiilance himself, in the GDR. After being asked how he prepared for this role, he simply answered "I remembered".
Just like "Goodbye Lenin", this is a great (if only less comedic) commentary on the old East German state- a subject, I feel, which has less interest in it than it deserves.

No Country for Old Men - R Really wasn't sure what to make of this film. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting- it was a lot slower, for a start. I feel as though I missed something from it- the end just seemed very...empty. April 20, 2009

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest - R A rather powerful film, and in some cases, disturbing (re, the electroshock therapy scene).
A masterclass of acting from Nicholson. Absolutely amazing end.
