Cloverfield - PG-13 I was pretty...speechless, to be honest, at the end of this film. I wasn't sure what to make of it. It was quite short, very to-the-point and didn't let you get a single moment to process what you were seeing. It's a true visual onslaught from start to finish.
But, I decided that I really, really enjoyed it. It was a great new take on an old story, I think.
Also, it's the only film for many years to keep my heart racing for the entire thing. Even scary in parts (although, that could be due to the effect of the "climbing a tilted sky-scraper scene" on someone who hates heights). And not simply scary because something jumps out from the shadows- it was the realism that made it.
From reviews it seems a bit of a "love it, or hate it" film, but personally I would recommend it.

Eagle Eye - PG-13 A very interesing film- worth watching, I think. I was suprised to see the plot turn a bit 2001: A Space Odysey/I, Robot but I enjoyed it all the same. October 29, 2008

Saw V - R Rather disapointing. Though it was very interesting to watch the backstory, they didn't integrate the new games/devices as well as the previous films.
Time to call it an end on the Saw series, I think.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold - Unrated A bit confusing and intense (a lot of double-bluffing going on). But not a bad film.
Richard Burton is really good. It's amazing how much he sounds like Antony Hopkins in places (both of them being Welsh, of course).

La grande vadrouille (Don't Look Now - We're Being Shot at) - G This is the 1st film I've watched completely in French- and it was very funny indeed. Plays well on old wartime stereotypes I think.
When I say "totally in French"- there are English characters, but what they say is subtitled into French anyway.
One thing that made me laugh within about 2mins was the British general who had the best "BIG GENERAL MOUSTACHE" in cinematic history.
It was a bit 'Allo 'Allo, in that there was a very strange mix of French and English. ANd French with some extraordinary stiff-upper-lip accents.
But, this film is amazing because it includes THE best thing I have EVER watched- German soldiers boucing around tables on their chairs...I would recommend you see this film just for that sweet moment.

El Orfanato (The Orphanage) - R It's obvious that Del Toro worked on this- the glorious blend of real and fantasy made it a great film. A little creepy, but very good. I thought the ending was superb. September 10, 2008

The Rocketeer - PG This was actually quite a bit better than I thought it would be. But a LOT of that was down to the LEGEND that is Timothy Dalton.
Naturally, a few bad points- like the fact that Secord could fly so high with no breathing aparatus. And how they managed to fix a hole in a top-grade goverment rocket with chewing gum. Oh, and Dalton's weird on/off German accent at the end?
But, the film had a certain...charm about it that I liked. Even if Secord did look like a low-budget Iron Man.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - R I didn't finish watching this. There were some funny one-liners but apart from that, it didn't really make me laugh. Which is a shame, because I think Sacha Baron Cohen's a very intelligent man. August 12, 2008

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - PG-13 This was a bit of a mixed bag really. It was a nice idea and some parts were decent, but as a whole it wasn't brilliant.
The main problem, I think, was the dialogue- it was pretty poor. Which is why the film got better towars the end; because there was far less dialogue during the fight scenes.
Brendan Fraser was fairly entertaining I guess, but I longed for Rachael Wiesz. I really didn't rate Maria Bello at all.
If more time had been spent on the 2nd half of the film (rather than the dialogue-full set-up) it would've been a better film.

The Dark Knight - PG-13 With a list as long as Bale, Ledger, Eckhart Cane, Oldman, Freeman...etc etc, would this film live up to its extraordinary hype?
Usually, they don't- but this...this is amazing. It really is.
As a film (and a sequel) on its own, I thought it was great. A superb plot, very well acted and written. Eckhart was very very good indeed as Harvey Dent- and the way they made his face disfigured was stunningly good.
But, of course, the star of the show was Ledger. This beats performances from the likes of Weaving and Depp to become the best character-performance I have ever had the fortune to watch.
That first scene, around the table...it just stunned me. I couldn't believe how well he'd gotten into the character- and it was not just the voice, etc. The power behind it came from the subtle actions (the licking of the lips, etc). He genuinely looked psychotic. But...in a strange way he was also very funny. With certain things that he said, and noises he made, he added the more comical side to the scary Joker. Another sign of his talent.
The only sad fact is that it was a once-off. We'll never get a repeat of the amazing acting in this film. And if they use The Joker again, as good as it may be, I don't think it'll ever match up to Ledger's portrayal.
The greatest film of all time? I'm not sure, but then what is the best? How can you compare The Godfather with Casablanca? Or The Dark Knight with Breakfast at Tiffanys? You can't. All I'll say is that this is one film (and one actor's performace) that you won't regret watching.

Iron Man - PG-13 I thought this was a great film. Funny, full of action, dramatic...
Robert Downey Jr was brilliant in his role as Stark. I think he played it very welll and was very funny.
The one bad point was the...devolution...of Paltrows character. At the start she was strong, independent, witty, etc etc. But by the end she'd turned into the stereotypical helpless female/love interest of the hero. Her character went from its strong beginning to being very whinny and a bit pathetic really.
All in all though, very watchable film.
