| Beau Travail - Unrated |
Good, but slightly strange. It's one of those films where nothing really happens, yet there was a clearly defined plot.
But this is the central theme- that the French Foreign Legion (central to the film) is pointless...meaningless...empty- as the plot and lack of narrative show. It is a study of "foreigness" and the effects of the collapse of French collonialism. The music is fantastic as well. From the opera scores, to Tarkan's "Simarik", to Corona's "Rhythm of the night". Denis Lavant is just brilliant. He really is. Just watching this film, it may seem slightly dull. But when you know it's background and meaning it becomes a film to watch over and over again. |

| The Silence - Unrated | A true Bergman all the way through. This is a great insight into his views on both what "female" is (and "the feminine other") and a journey to try and find meaning in life. | May 15, 2008 | N/A | |||

I really enjoyed watching this film, it was well acted and very funny indeed. Kevin Spacey, although looking a little old now, was as stunning as ever in his role.
Some people may see parts of this film as being a bit predictable and (whilst I'm somewhat inclined to agree) I thought the slight predictability just made the ending even better. I just wasn't prepared for what happened. Overall a very watchable film. |

| Vertigo - PG |
This is an absolute masterpiece from Hitchcock. Some really great acting from both Novak and, in particular, James Stewart.
What makes this film so interesting though is the underlying themes about the objectification of women, the trauma that follows unfulfilled desires, and the fragility of what a person thinks is reality (i.e. things not being what they seem). A great comparison film to this is Truffauts "Mississippi Mermaid". Although, even if you just want to watch it without delving deep into its meaning, it's still a great thriller with some good plot twists. |

I was sceptical about this, but it's just as good as the Gene Wilder version.
There is only one character-actor great enough to equal Wilders portrayal of Wonka- and that is Johnny Depp. His abilities never fail to amaze me. This film is great fun to watch. |
