Pandorum - R Very hit and miss. It kind of works as a survival horror similar to The Descent but there are just so many plot holes and stupid decisions made by the characters that it gets pretty annoying. The movie's look is incredibly dark, it looks good but sometimes it's hard to tell whats going on especially with the fast cutting in action scenes. It had some interesting moments and some nice suspense but the ending ruined it for me with the silly twist and philosophy. Could have been good, but wasn't. December 10, 2009

The Limits of Control - R I like Jim Jarmusch's refreshing indie style but this took it too far. The film to just too sparse to get into as nothing really happens. Yeh the music is cool and the attention to detail in the cinematography but the story is just dull. There is a nice slow pace and mysteriousness to it and the characters the guy meets are all interesting and played by great actors but ultimatley i just didn't really care what was going on and just wanted the movie to end. Luckily it did. December 10, 2009

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - R After the opening credits i was contemplating switching this movie off because of the headache it almsot gave me. The editing is just needless and insane, a classic case of style over substance, but anyway, i stuck with it and it did entertain. Denzel does a good job as the ordinary guy caught up in extraodinary circumstances and Travolta makes a good over-the-top, religious, crazy wallstreet-heist-boss. Theres plenty of action and dialogue as you would expect in a Tony Scott movie. It's fast paced, a bit brainless but ultimatley a fairly entertaining 2hrs. December 9, 2009

Jennifer's Body - R Mildly entertaining but i agree it is a bit of a mess. You can get tired really quickly of Diablo Cody's quirky dialogue so much that you just want to punch the characters in the face. It wasn't really that funny or scary but yet still strangely watchable. I just don't understand how much acclaim Megan Fox it getting because she's a very poor actress and she's quite bland looking really. December 7, 2009

Watchmen - R This film just re-invented the super hero genre. Everything about it from the production values to the soundtrack was awesome. Yes it's long but was i ever bored at any stage? NO. The film noir style of story telling with all the dark shadowy scenes and voiceover coupled with the amazing CGI just made this really stand out for me. The cold war backdrop added a great sense of realism and although the plot didn't really show itself until the 2nd half of the movie it was still really fun to watch as their were a few different threads happening at once. Some of the ideas & philosophy expressed in this film is pretty deep for a comic book adaptation so i'm not surprised that alot of people either don't like it or don't get it because they want easy to understand, served-on-a-plate dialogue and movie logic. The DR Manhatten character owns this movie, the scene where he goes to the moon is jaw dropping. This is a class film. FUCKING A. December 7, 2009

Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (The Baader Meinhof Complex) - R Kick-ass political thriller about the terrorist group, RAF, who ran riot in 1960's Germany. The movie really had a lot of style and was shot with that gritty style similar to Munich. It's a long film and it gets through a tonne of history so you feel a bit bombarded by the vast amount of facts, political figures, events, characters etc but it's pretty engrossing. The action is good and the violence is a plenty but what makes it so good is the tension throughout the film. These guys are pissed off and unlike many protesters they rolled up their sleeves and got things done. Quality. December 7, 2009

Bakjwi (Thirst) - R Slightly dissapointed considering Park's track record with the vengeance trilogy and then Cyborg but this was still an entertaining watch. Probably because i've seen so many vampire flicks recently that this one just failed to stand out from the crowed, although it's not a traditional vampire film, it's more of a character study of 2 people who happen to be transforming into vampires. There are some great little moments though and Park's trademark dark comedy and lush cinematography are evident. It was just lacking that special something. Looking forward to whatever he does next though. December 7, 2009

Drag Me to Hell - PG-13 This movie was a lot of fun as Sam Raimi went back to his Evil Dead style of film-making to tell this tale of a girl whos been cursed by a gypsy witch. Cool ending, although saw it coming but many laughs and scares along the way. December 7, 2009

Il y a Longtemps que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long) - PG-13 Not sure if this one lived up to all the hype. It was alright and Kristin Scott Thomas was good but the film never really drew me in, i was always waiting for something to happen. It's a subtle story and the acting is very naturalistic but as a film it failed to entertain. December 7, 2009

Australia - PG-13 This could have been good but instead Baz Luhrman decided to shoot it like a cheesey 1940's hollywood epic which makes it hard to take seriously. Enjoyed the outback scenes and the cinematography though. December 7, 2009

Polytechnique - Unrated Minimal, beautifully shot and haunting. I liked the fractured narritive editing. This film is better than Elephant. December 7, 2009

Gamer - R Some interesting concepts but the style of this movie killed it for me. The editing is just so fast you can't actually tell whats going on. I preferred this film when it was called Running Man. December 7, 2009

Inglourious Basterds - R Absolute class! Has restored my faith in QT. Ultra violence against nazis with no let-up on gory details and some of the blackest humor ever. Who cares whether it's not historically accurate it's a movie for fucks sake and it happens to be a remake of an old italian film as well.
Every secene is soaked with tension so i was on edge the whole time. The first scene is pretty gut wrenching watching the farmer battle his conscience to give up the position of the hiding jews. Christoph Waltz absolutely nails his part and deserves a lot of credit for bringing such a monster to life. He's the sort of character that pretends to be your best friend while all the time plotting how he'll take you down. Truely evil but very funny. Pitt was ok, i think the crap accents were on purpose. Eli Roth is shit i don't know why he acts in film because he is terrible and a terrible director who just happens to be QT's mate so he gets parts. I enjoyed every scene and as usual each scene felt like you were watching a different short film which ultimatley came together to form the explosive ending. The language in the movie is great too, characters just chatting bollocks which is a QT trademark but really helps you to get to know them. You couldn't work out where this film was going and I enjoyed every minute of it because of this. One of the best of the year!

Terminator Salvation - PG-13 For entertainment's sake this movie delivered but as a sequel in the Terminator franchise it fell short, although still much better than that 3rd shitty film. Christian Bale was adequate as John Connor but i though Anton Yelchin was weak as Kyle Reese. I liked the look of the machines and especially the little sentinal looking things that patrolled the swamp. Introducing the new robot made the story more interesting but the film quickly turned into another generic over-the-top action blockbuster with explosions everywhere. Maybe the next one will be better? November 24, 2009

9 - PG-13 A very dark but enjoyable animated movie about a group of puppets trying to survive in a post apocalyptic wasteland whilst being hunted doen by giant robotic beasts! It's quite scary at times and there are some pretty sad moments. Not sure if children would appreciate it but adults should do. It looks brilliant. The ending is a slight let down but it was a good watch still. November 24, 2009

District 9 - R INSTANT CLASSIC!
I've been waiting for something like this to be made for a very long time. You've got to applaude the approach to this film. It sets up like a documentary which helps keep it realistic and gets across the notion that this alien race of refugees have been stranded on earth for 20 years already and everybody's just gotta accept that.
Firstly the look and feel to this film is amazing. The CGI creatures and the ship look awsome. The prawn's language sound great too. The weapons and gore is simply horrific which i love. It has a gritty style to alot of the action with documentary-like camera work which looks cool.
The story starts off with the humans needing to relocate the alien race out of the city because the crime rate is too high and there's too much racial tension between the prawns and humans. The politics of the film are based on the apartheid in South-Africa which is clever i though. There's a great sense of urgency throughout the film and i though the main character was brilliant, the guy playing him did a great job. The action is just mind-blowing! literally! great fun to watch! The story does kind of tail off a little at the end and goes a bit hollywood but still this is a brilliant movie that will be talked about for years.

Paper Heart - PG-13 I don't understand the mixed reactions to this movie as i thought it is brilliant! The whole behind the scenes of a documentary setup was a unique approach and i think they nailed it. Michael Cera was Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi equalled his gimpy, teenaged awkwardness so much that their relationship felt very natural and unforced. The music was good and i likied the hand made animations. The snippets of real life people talking about love was a nice touch too as i thought it gave the movie an extra sense of realism. The movie had the similar theme of does love really exist like in 500 Days of Summer and what's great is that it didn't preach or try to come up with some really deep meaningful bullshit about love at the end, just a really cool animated ending showing 2 happy people. Loved it and you should love it too! November 24, 2009

The Hangover - R Laugh out loud hilarious! Thought this was gonna be a cheesey, unrealistic teenage boys fantasy but in fact it was just brilliant. The characters just get themselves into the most craziest situations possible and take you along for the ride. So many great funny bits. Tyson's cameo was spot on. I like the fact you didn't see any of the actual night's escapade until the poloaroides in the credits. Nice touch. Highly recomended! November 24, 2009

(500) Days of Summer - PG-13 One of the best films of the year! Delicate, funny and very realistic. Not at all quirky it's very straight and doesn't try to be too soppy or preachy. Just a film about the meaning of love. No happy hollywood ending just like in real life. Very likeable characters. Some awsomely funny moments. A joy to watch. Oh yeah, and Zooey is beautiful and amazing as always. November 24, 2009

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - PG-13 The biggest, fastest, loudest, shinest, dumbest movie i've ever seen! Really, it's just a mess but i wouldn't expect anything else from Michael Bay. There is literally no logic or storyline, just a big excuse to cram as much action into 2 and a half hours as they can! 2 and a half hours!!!!!!!! It just gets boring. November 24, 2009

Moon - R Really decent low-budget science fiction movie in the same vein as solaris. Sam Rockwell is great. The movie kept me watching till the end. Kevin Spacey's voice is a bit too annoying for the robot. November 5, 2009

Fantastic Mr. Fox - PG Now, i haven't read many books in my life because im too lazy, but Frantastic Mr Fox is the first book i ever read so i hold it close to my heart. It's just lucky that a director like Wes got to adapt it as i'm a big fan of him too. It doesn't matter that it has american voice actors because they do such a brilliant job. Wes Anderson has taken his style of wit and comedy and perfectly fused it into the Roal Dahl story and it works perfectly. A lot of people don't like his style so i say go watch fucking Finding Nemo or some shit. Anyway, the look was brilliant with all the autumnal shades going on and the figures looked so detailed. I especially liked the bit at the end when they salute the wolf, it was a really touch. I found myself laughing at loud consistently throughout the movie and didn't really want it to end. That is the sign of a good film. October 26, 2009

The Damned United - R A really enjoyable look at a real character of football. I feel they sugar coated everything a little for effect but on the whole, judging from footage ive seen on youtube of the real man, it's pretty accurate. They captured the vibe of football in the 60's & 70's perfectly. The movie had a great look too. October 26, 2009
