I loved this as a kid and all these years later (35 now) It's still, if not more so.. An Amazing movie.
Perfect in almost every way. A total classic Stanley Kubrick movie and I think his best movie.
Not going to bother with a long review saying what I love about this film as it's all been said to death already.
One of the most quotable movies ever, one of the best 80s movies and without doubt one of the best war movies (of any kind) ever made.
"The deadliest weapon in the world is a marine and his rifle. It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. You will become dead marines and then you will be in a world of shit because marines are not allowed to die without permission. Do you maggots understand?"
5 stars for this movie? Yea, you read that correct. I just watched this on DVD again the other day (15th of Sept 2007) and I just loved it.
OK...So?...It's a chick flick and I'm a 33 year old guy..BUT!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
WHY!?
Well for a start, it has Jennifer Garner in it, and in this movie she is just perfect in every way with looks and a personality to just die for...I get the horn for a lot of actresses in a LOT of movies, but I fell in love while watching Jennifer Garner in this movie and she made my heart melt more than once...Goosebumps? I got them while watching her in this movie.
I love the 80's feel to the movie and the Thriller bit was just ace...Made me think of my dad (being one of his fave music vids)
Always a great actor, Mark Ruffalo is great in this movie as the male lead and he played a very similar role with Mary Stuart Masterson in the movie 'On the 2nd Day of Christmas ' (another movie I love and is worth a checking out if you're a fan of this movie)
This is such a great feel good movie and it just made me smile all the way through. (even when I was holding back the tears a few times?shhhhhhh?Don?t tell anybody;)
Sometimes a movie comes along that you think to yourself "this will be utter tosh". Well this was one of those movies but after I watched it, it became an instant Christmas fave. Probably in my top 5 all time fave Christmas movies and I have watched it every year for what? 8-10 years now? on TV then for the past few years on DVD.
I love the on the road feel to it, Jonathan Taylor Thomas is a very likeable guy in this so it makes it easy to enjoy the fun that this movie delivers.
Probably one of the worst movies ever made but it's so bad it's bloody amazing. I know this movie as Zombie Creeping Flesh but I own the US titled Hell of the Loving Dead DVD.
Margit Evelyn Newton gets her kit off (for no reason other than to show some flesh) and the gore fx are plenty...Enough reason right there to watch it.
This movie was on the UK video nasties list for mega years.
If you love 80's horror movies then you need to check this out. Just know it is really rubbish in every way but it's still one of the best Friday night movies ever made, watch it with friends and just have fun ripping the piss from every magical moment of it.
I just watched this again last night for the first time since about 95 and it's still my fave romance movie. There's just something about this movie that keeps me smiling all the way through. Michelle and Al are just prefect in this and I'm sure that Scarface helped them click as well as they did on screen.
I also love how Michelle tries to look like plain jane, although that part fails because Michelle is just far to beautiful. Nice effort though.
I wish I could give it more stars.
"Now, there's a man and a woman. He's a cook. She's a waitress. Now, they meet and they don't connect. Only, she noticed him. He could feel it. And he noticed her. And they both knew it was going to happen. They made love, and for maybe one whole night, they forgot the 10 million things that make people think, I don't love this person, I don't like this person, I don't know this- Instead, it was perfect, and they were perfect. And that's all there was to know about. Only now, she's beginning to forget all that, and pretty soon he's going to forget it too."
I put the DVD on to watch the extra features. I had seen the movie so many times that I had not planned to watch it, Well I made the mistake of playing it and wellll, that was that.
This movie is just so good, it's one of those movies that if you watch 5 mins off, you will watch it all, for me it's Jim Carrey best movie by far, he is perfect in it.
"Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"
I remember when this was just coming out and I thought... "this is going to suck"
Then the reviews came out for it and it was a case of "this movies sucks"
I took a chance on it anyway because it's Marvel and I was so glad I did. This movie turned out to be one of my faves of the new Marvel movies and I just watched it again on DVD (Feb 22nd 2008)
Thomas Jane is just superb as the Punisher and does not play the character so cold as you don't like him, he has just the right amount of dead inside, but still with enough good to be a hero.
The killing of his family and friends is not easy to watch, there's not millions of gore here (that's saved for later) but they are all killed in such a way that it sends a chill down your spine and sets the tone for what's to come when Frank Castle turns into the Punisher.
There's a couple of comic book style characters thrown into the mix to battle Frank, and as fun as these are (the Russian fight being a highlight of the movie) they seem a little out of place, I've not seen the new directors cut yet so I hope there's some kinda of plot hole patching there.
John Travolta plays over the top again but not so much as to bug you, he does not get that much screen time but when he does it's all good.
The late Roy Scheider is in the movie as Franks dad and I kept waiting on him saying "we're gonna need a bigger gun" but he never did..Oh well!
It was nice to see Rebecca Romijn in another Marvel movie without her next to nothing blue paint suit on, but I sure missed that blue paint...hehe.
The story for the movie is pretty good and when Frank starts to punish, it's all very brutal the way it should be and the start of the movie reminds you that those SOBs all deserve it and then some, so it does not feel out of place and over the top.
The thing I love most about this movie though is the score, the Punisher theme is just sublime, probably the best superhero theme since Tim burtons Batman.
"Those who do evil to others - the killers, the rapists, psychos, sadists - you will come to know me well. Frank Castle is dead. Call me The Punisher."
I just got around to seeing this at last on DVD (13th March) and boy was it worth the wait.
Since it was on dvd, this was the extended version, but since i've never seen it at the cinema I don't know what was different.
This film has almost zero plot, so if a deep story is what you're after then don't even think about watching this, hell don't watch it even if you want a puddle deep story after 5 mins of rain.
What this movie has though it more than makes up for with its lack of plot because it's all so much FUN!
I watched this movie with the audience reaction track on via the dvd and it was sooo much fun, I felt like I was watching this at the cinema, the print damage helped add to the charm, all in all, how I watched the movie sure added to the experience of it all so I give it an extra half star just for that.
Badass Babes -
Rose McGowan is just great in this, oh so sexy and oh so badass, she is even pretty funny (maybe she should do stand up? :P)
Marley Shelton plays a sexy anesthesiologist who is having an affair with Stacy 'Fergie' Ferguson, yep she's a part time lesbian although I won't get your hopes up and tell you that anything happens during the movie because you'll only have your imagination for that (think of it as another missing reel from the movie if you must ;))
The Dudes -
There's lots of top action hero at work here, I was pleased to see Michael Biehn back on the screen in a fun movie, I was a huge Biehn fan after Aliens and there was a time in the 80's and early 90s that I would rent every Biehn movie on VHS.
Josh Brolin, Freddie Rodriguez, Naveen Andrews, Jeff Fahey and Bruce Willis all have really great parts, I always love seeing Tom Savini in a movie and it was cool having Carlos Gallardo (El Mariachi) in another Rodriguez movie, but none of them are as memorable as Rose with that machine Gun leg, Ok, maybe the Quentin Tarantino scene as Rapist #1 just makes 2nd place, I don't think the image of his melting wedding tackle will leave my nightmares anytime soon.
Gore -
The movie has bucket loads of the stuff, some really great moments are to be had here so if you love old school gore then this is the movie for you, Gregory Nicotero and his team do some great sfx work here and I'm sure there will be a few cringeworthy scenes (like the QT scene I mentioned) for you.
The movie is pretty much just one action packed thrill ride filled with gore and funny one liners, there's a missing reel from the movie that takes away even more of what little plot there is but as long as you don't ask questions like "how can she fire that gun with her leg"? then you will be sure to love this movie.
Oh
Special mention for the score, it's ace and Rodriguez did a great job here. Also the fake Machete trailer that opens the movie is top notch and it's cool that Rodriguez is going to try and make the full movie.
"I've seen me a lot of weird shit in my day, but I ain't never seen a one-legged stripper. I seen me a stripper with one breast. And I seen me a stripper with twelve toes. I've even seen me a stripper with no brains at all, but I ain't never seen a one-legged stripper. And I've been to Morocco."
