I WORSHIP music, and love reading novels, building computers (and using them) and dedicate TOO much of my time watching and reading about movies. I play competitive volleyball and most other sports
Mostly I enjoy what I'm watching (or I wouldn't have decided to watch it) so my recent reviews are usually filled with stars. Though occasionally, some movies DO disappoint and so I do give the occasional < 3. Please do not add me if you, frankly, don't actually care about movies, and please do not clog my talk with pointless widgets or the like. But otherwise...nice to meet ya! |

The Island
PG-13
A typical Michael Bay offering, it merges over the top, jaw dropping, action sequences (too fast and frenetic at times, gave me headaches at one point) with a none too subtle plot, unraveling and giving in too quickly, disintegrating into a mindless extended 'chase' but, oh, what a chase it is. The film has sparks of imaginative brilliance which unfortunately feels uneasily analogous to a plethora of previous novels/films. Nonetheless it effectively sustains viewer interest and is thoroughly thought provoking, (Think playing god/ 1984ish elements, especially the first half hour). McGregor and Johansson mostly portray well a desperate, lost and alienated couple on the run from ruthless and obsessed facility owner Dr. Merrick (Sean Bean~ brilliant in his standard bad guy role). McGregor particularly invokes empathy rare in most 'Bay' action films though I still doubt the extent of Johansson acting ability.
In conclusion, a typical glossy, SCI-FI action film with a tinge more thought (in the first half at least) than usual.
The Dark Knight
PG-13
OMG, i REALLY, REALLY want to see this, especially after all my friends said it was mind-blowing...
seeing at IMAX soon... =D
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
PG-13
Don't believe the critics.
If you're after exhilarating, mind-blowing FUN, this is simply brilliant.
Shia LaBeouf brilliantly conducts the essence of the Indy character into a fresh, 'cooler' identity, supporting Ford in a way both familiar and also different (which is realistically, more suitable for a 21st century audience)
Blanchett is also emphatic as ruthless soviet leader. Her accent, I admit, IS a bit weird though...
Action (distinctively Indy) is typically over the top, brilliantly utilising 19 years of special effects advancement (smartly playing only an assisting role) to produce some scenes which will leave you in disbelief and jaw-dropping astonishment. Unfortunately, this clashes, only sparingly, with a more subdued plotline (which I found was quite elaborate, intriguing and dark)
Note, I am not comparing this to the original trilogy (its is however, better than 'The Temple of Doom', but not as tightly integrated as 'Raiders' or 'The Last Crusade')
You simply cannot enjoy this film OVER-expecting it to surpass or match the previous. It is a film in a new era and style of cinema, as was with Star Wars 1-3.
Yes, this does lack the complete spark and magic of the previous ones (especially Raiders) but by itself, it is nonetheless a spectacular and mesmerizing offering.
Thank you Spielberg, Lucas and crew for a film highly deserving of its place among the masterpiece that is Indiana Jones.
Essential viewing for any Indy fan, once again bring non-stop pure escapist pleasure for any viewer seeking respite from the pressure of recent more serious films.
V for Vendetta
R
An elaborate work of genius built on the roots of Alan Moore's brilliant graphic novel, it leaps from scene one, to deliver a staccato of heart racing action sequences (intentionally unrealistic but breathtaking~ almost Matrix like...cough) inter-weaved amidst a engrossing and exquisitely designed and acted storyline (credit to Moore and the Wachowski brothers) which kept me in constant suspense, uncertainty and wonder. Portman, limitlessly talented, is startlingly raw and believable. Similarly, V (an entrancingly layered and interesting hero/terrorist) is portrayed equally as brilliantly by Weaving, without suffering at all from the lack of facial expression (in fact accentuated by this aspect). The unconventional and startlingly conclusion (We never truly come to know V, physically and psychologically) is an indication of the magnificence of the film, which, elucidated by the brilliant ending, is overall, thoroughly empowering and emphatic, especially in a post 9/11, post 1984 (which it is undoubtedly similar to) era where the boundaries between good and evil, freedom and slavery are most definitely blurred.
A must see, to be considered, absorbed and appreciated.
Starship Troopers
R
A cinematic adaptation of the controversial 1960's novel, this vastly enjoyable, comically pro-military/war and ideologically immoral film depicts the exploits of 3/4 students thrust in to the apparent genocide of an alien 'arachnid' race as a consequence of conflicting territories with a futuristic, galactic, human federation. Verhoeven skillfully weaves an essentially disjointed storyline, corny/hilarious dialogue and B-Grade actors with frenetic, excessive yet spectacular action to produce a simple yet fun adventure film. Not to be taken seriously (or else, prepared to be shocked by its 1984ish elements). I like it!!!
The Pianist
R
Roman Polanski delivers his most powerful and personal film (a Polish Jew having experienced the horrors of WW2 as a child), taking an astonishing true story which parallels yet also contrasts with the perspective of Oskar Schindler (S.L.) to display the war from the terrifying and heart wrenching perspective of talented Jewish pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman- portrayed by brilliant Adrien Brody, who delivers a truly dedicated performance. The raw desperation, fear and excruciating loneliness which permeates the character and his kinsmen drives the film, which is accentuated by shockingly emphatic 'action/struggle' sequences (which Polanski typically excel at). Though not as powerfully inspiring or depicting the 'power of hope and the resiliency of the human spirit' as I expected, it is nonetheless an essential masterpiece crucial to our understanding of and subsequent empathy with the suffering experienced during the Holocaust

by MarkFatal flaw, a scary movie that isn't scary. A more apt title would be "Gone With the Mist". Thumbs down.
Hey, you should really avoid this! Couldn't stand the stereotypical bible thumping character played by Marcia Gay Harden, although I do enjoy her work. Didn't like the ending either. Big thumbs down!

Mamma Mia!
by CoreyThe most fun to be had at the movies this summer!
It's tragic that this highly enjoyable film had to open opposite The Dark Knight, but I highly encourage everyone to see it.
Now, I haven't seen the musical so I don't know how it compares, but I do know that the screen version is a lot of fun.
The cast is fantastic, and the songs are simply perfect. Streep of course does her normal great work here, but the rest of the cast also pulls their own. Amanda Seyfried is great, and her singing voice is simply beautiful. I really hope to see more of her. Julie Walters and Christine Baranski are extremely memerable as Streep's best friends in the film. The trio of main men also suprise here with fitting renditions of hit ABBA songs.
The thing about this film is that the audience can clearly tell that the whole cast had a great time making this film, and we couldn't be happier as it's a breath of fresh air in the summer movie season.
The film was shot primarily in Greece, so the scenery is gorgeous. Having just got back from there, I really enjoyed seeing all the sights again.
Make sure to fit this in with your showing of The Dark Knight. You won't be sorry.Hey, you should really see this!

The Dark Knight
by CoreyI went to the midnight showing of this film, and I must say that it was the best movie going experience of my life. Before this film I deemed midnight showings worthless, but never had I been so excited for a movie.
Simply put, this film is a masterpiece. A stunning achievement for everyone involved, and a film that stands as one of the best OF ALL TIME.
Everything about this film is just perfect. The cast, the script, the cinematography, eveything.
Christopher Nolan had already established his genius with previous films such as Memento, The Prestige, and Batman Begins, but it's with The Dark Knight that he shows us all that he really has. No only did he co-write the best comic book script ever, but he directed what is easily the best crime-epic of the past decade. Come Oscar time, directing and screenplay nods would be well deserved.
The cast of course is perfect. Come awards season, they are the only ensemble that deserves recognition. Each gets the chance to flesh out their character, to make us care for them. Each takes their performance to areas I never thought possible in a comic book movie. Christian Bale has been absent from some of the reviews, but the truth is that he is brilliant. Not not only the best Batman, but he brings things to the character that no other actor would be capable of. He's simply brilliant.
Still, this movie would not be quite what it is without the fearless performance of the late Heath Ledger. Leaving the theater, one can't help but think that Ledger would have become one of the greats had he continued on from here. He emerses himself completely in his role as the Joker, and in the process creates what I believe is the most memerable screen villian of all time. He has scenes which draw fear from the audience, and others that draw laughter. It's simply a brilliant performance. Come Oscar time, he'll be the only one worthy of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
The supporting cast is also great. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine expand greatly on their characters. Throughout the movie we begin to know each of them better. Rarely do films allow the audience to feel an emotional connection with its characters, but through eveyone's performance it's possible here. Gary Oldman is also great, as is Maggie Gyllenhaal. Aaron Eckhart, as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, also deserves attention. His character makes much of this crime epic work, and many of the scenes hinge on his ability to flesh out his character. he does it though, and easily stands his groud in this talented group of individuals.
Another thing that should be pointed out is the lack of special effects used here. Nolan is a true storyteller, and therefore tends to cut back on these over the top, ridiclous CGI shots. Sure, there's some but only when nessicary.
The film also notably uses the fears of our country since 9/11. The videos made by the Joker are easily comparable to the films sent out every so often by Osama bin Laden. Truth is, the film prays on people's fears and in this day and age the film gets across this point more eerily then I ever thought possible.
In short, I could go on about this movie forever. There's so much to be said about the film, and subsequent viewings will only result in more praise.
So, in closing I encourage everyone to see this film. It's dark, haunting, and spectacular. A true testament to what movies should be, and how stories should be told.
It's nothing short of brilliance!

The Dark Knight
by SilasThis is the best Batman movie ever! Ledger's Joker is an anarchist to the extreme and his performance is the new definition of the character. Go see this.
Hey, you should really see this!
Bale is great as Batman and Aaron Eckart's Harvey Dent is astonishing. This will be a standard for all other superhero movies to achieve from now on. The only thing that I didn't like was the makeup of the Joker not being true to the comics, but it fits for the movie as a symbol of what's going on. See this movie as soon as you can!posted 7 days ago -

August Rush
by DeanThat story is full of strong emotionally drama between the musics and a very long lost relationship. Really wonderful heart-warming flick stars Freddie Highmore is amazing as a young orphan who heads to New York in search of his real parents, who are musicians, and very mystery of musical in his mind like his parents. And his co-stars Robin Williams as a crazy old sod who usesthe local homeless boys to make money - they basically busk on the streets for him and he lives off their takings. A very different role for Williams, but, not surprisingly, he pulls it off.

Red Eye
by JackWith the action confined to a cramped passenger jet for most of the film's running time, there's no room for the kind of relentlessly over-the-top action that many Hollywood thrillers peddle. Instead, Craven and screenwriter Carl Ellsworth keep the focus purely on the power-play between Jackson and Lisa, keeping the tension high, and never lingering for too long before moving on to the next suspense set-piece.
The director's aided in his task by the excellent work of the two leads, with Rachel McAdams proving that she can carry a movie as she portrays a realistic and three-dimensional character without becoming an action heroine stereotype. Murphy also excels, managing to be convincingly charming in the early scenes and resisting the urge to chew the scenery once Jackson's menacing agenda becomes clear.
The script exploits the surreal nature of a life-or-death situation taking place in such a banal environment (most notably, when Lisa is menaced by Jackson in the airplane toilet, and one of the hostesses misinterprets it as an attempt to join the Mile High Club), while the efficient direction pastes over the more obvious holes in the plot.
Sadly, Red Eye eventually falls prey to the kind of overblown climax that unseats many Hollywood suspense thrillers. In the same way that Speed faltered once it left the famous wired-to-explode bus, the film doesn't quite recover from letting the characters leave the confines of the plane, and opening out into a more traditional action thriller environment.
Thankfully, it's still sensible enough to play the more ridiculous moments with its tongue firmly in cheek (thanks largely to the entertaining Jayma Mays as Lisa's mousy co-worker at the hotel). Even an extended sequence that's essentially Craven re-treading ground from the Scream movies can't completely derail what remains a surprisingly tense and satisfying thriller.Hey, you should really see this!
