Wow. Stunningly bad. The lip-syncing, for one, is an embarrassment to us all. A great cast gives passable performances in a film that just turns out dreadful, despite everyone's best efforts. Would have been better if it were just a straight-up goofy noir (in other words, if it ditched Story A). However, it did provide some decent noir eye candy. I think that's the only positive thing I can say.
Um. I really liked this movie. I would watch it repeatedly. I don't know quite why - I mean, yes. Paul Rudd. Also, I like Jason Segel. And there are a million other great casting choices. And it was really funny, without being -too- over the line. Anyway, I liked it a lot and I laughed very hard.
On the whole, I think I liked it. I'm still mulling it over, though. Certain aspects of the film leave me feeling conflicted -- thought provoking, though not necessarily in the ways it aims for. It was good, however, to see a near-future SF setting that didn't put the US front & center. It was engaging to watch, and struck a nice balance between thought-provoking & Blow Things Up Real Good. (More gore than I was expecting, as well.)
I somehow managed to be stunned by just how truly dreadful this film is. At no point is the acting/writing anything but laughable. There are multiple plot threads that arise and get dropped in the same scene. I've seen Ed Wood films with more coherent narrative structure than this movie. That said, I did laugh a lot -- I can see how it has gained the "cult" following it seems to have. Tommy Wiseau's bizarre line delivery is hilarious. I would watch this movie again, but only with the assistance of the fine gentlemen at RiffTrax.
I wasn't expecting this movie to bring the depth of narrative and character that it did -- I was impressed! Of course, there's the violence, but I thought it was well done and thought-provoking.
