The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Once upon a time, Batman Begins was my all time favorite Batman movie. Not anymore... Enter The Dark Knight----PHENOMENAL!!!

It is rare that a much hyped film lives up to or surpasses that hype. TDK more than equals all the hype presented months leading up to its release. With much anticipation and high expectations, this film delivered all I wanted and more.

Plot details are best left for viewing, but if you truly listen to the dialogue in TDK, you will understand that from a comic book genre film, a masterpiece has arisen. Christopher Nolan has perfected the art of putting the comic book on screen. Jonathan Nolan has written a script which knows no boundaries.

Christian Bale is Batman. Bale captures Batman/Bruce Wayne in a way no actor before him ever could. Oldham, Morgan, and Caine reprise their respective roles from Batman Begins and add great flavor to the film. Eckhart shines as Harvey Dent and Gyllenhall is a nice replacement as Rachel Dawes. The chemistry between all the actors help Nolan create a world which works beautifully.

Heath Ledger- the Joker...WOW ... mere words cannot describe what Ledger brought to this character. The level to which Ledger took the Joker is almost incomprehensible. No comparison to those who have played the role before as it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Ledger owns the Joker, and most likely no one will ever take that ownership away. Anyone would be foolish to even attempt. Ledger's performance alone is enough reason for anyone to see this film. Will he receive an Oscar nod? He should for this is one of the most brilliant roles ever portrayed on screen.

The plot, the acting, the directing, and the cinematography are blended seamlessly in TDK. The film is easily the best film of 2008 to date. The action and drama, the darkness of the film itself all make this much, much more than a comic book adaptation. This is the must see film of the decade.

Black Hawk Down (2001,  R)
Black Hawk Down
Just knowing this is a true story is enough. You can't help but feel the anguish of the troops as they fight for survival in Somalia. You'll cry and cheer as the survivors make their way out.... Considering the length of the book, this is a great adaptation. This is most likely the best Josh Harnett film available.
3
Generation Kill (mini-series) (,  Unrated)
Generation Kill (mini-series)
The best mini-series since Band of Brothers

Based upon the book written by embedded Rolling Stones reporter Evan Wright, Generation Kill follows !st Recon Marines during the first wave of the USA led assault on Iraq in 2003. The 7 episode series is awesome from beginning to end. The script, direction, action, cinematography and acting are flawless. The story is enlightening, entertaining and saddening. The manor in which the actors bring the Marines of 1st recon to life is heart wrenching. A must see film.....

4
American History X (1998,  R)
American History X
Ed Norton's best! A powerful story told beautifully about a young man whose journey into and out of the Neo-Nazi movement grabs hold of the viewer and doesn't let go. Be warned- there is no happy ending to this film. One of the best films ever made.....
5
Northfork (2003,  PG-13)
Northfork
One of the most visually beautiful movies I have ever seen. The cast could not have been better selected. The Polish brothers (Michael & Mark) have written the gem of the century with Northfork. The movie is filled with symbolism and some of the most delightful dialogue ever filmed. This is a must see for any true movie buff. For others, it may not impress. Watch with an open mind and an open heart...
6
In Bruges (2008,  R)
In Bruges
Irish playwright Martin McDonagh has written and directed a brilliant film. Kudos to Mr. McDonagh for his most unique story. The mood and contrast between the lead characters (superbly portrayed by Farrell and Gleeson) worked on so many levels, and you can't walk away from this film without caring for them. The humor, the sensitivity, and the moral complexity of this film weave together to make an almost perfect drama/comedy. The Bruges setting is shot fabulously for the storyline. This first film from Martin McDonagh is impressive in the extreme. In Bruges may truly be my favorite black comedy of all time.
7
Enemy of the State (1998,  R)
Enemy of the State
If this film doesn't provoke you into thinking about "big brother" nothing will... Gripping, fast paced, realistic (especially in the world we know today), superb acting.... This film is all about being under government surveillance and it's too relevant to ignore. Will Smith and Gene Hackman are the stars, but the supporting cast list is top notch- Gabriel Byrne, Ian Hart, Barry Pepper, Jake Busey, Jack Black, Jaime Kennedy, Jason Lee, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore and Jason Robards. Who's watching you???? Conspiracy theorists, this is a must see for you.
8
Across the Universe (2007,  PG-13)
Across the Universe
If you ever enjoyed music by the Beatles, like to be visually entertained, and can just suspend reality for a bit, you will be engrossed by Across The Universe. There are such diverse reviews of this masterpiece by Julie Taymor, but I was blown away. Musicals aren't my 'cup of tea', but this one just comes together. The characters are delightful, the songs blend right into the script and the romantic story is very touching.
9
Little Miss Sunshine (2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
I loved this film! Each character is perfectly flawed, dysfunctional and loveable. They are so loveable. From laughter to tears and back again, this film hooks you from the beginning and doesn't stop until it's reeled you all the way in at the finish. I haven't laughed so freely with a film in a long time. This is true comedy. Stellar performances from Breslin, Arkin, Kinnear, Carell, Collette and Dano!! Dano and Breslin stole the show for me. Charming, delightful, funny, dark, emotional--- what a joyride of a film. This is one for the DVD collection.
10
Clay Pigeons (1998,  R)
Clay Pigeons
Clay Pigeons is a most under-rated film. A dark comedy that has characters who are more like caricatures, a plot that is strange and weird, yet very engrossing push this film to above average for the genre. A well done directorial debut from David Dobkin, the extremely well written screenplay from Matthew L Healy and surprisingly superb acting from Vince Vaughn make this a must see film for any fans of the dark comedy genre.
11
Saving Private Ryan (1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
An unforgettable glimpse into a world most of us have never experienced and pray we never will... A war story that doesn't hold back, but unflinchingly tells the story of WAR, yet it does so with compassion and reverence.
12
Full Metal Jacket (1987,  R)
Full Metal Jacket
War is hell. Stanley Kubrick masterfully drives this point home in Full Metal Jacket. A very character driven film that is brutal, harsh and unforgiving. A must own for buffs of war films...
13
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006,  R)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
This sensational journey through the life of a serial killer in eighteenth century France is remarkably well scripted, acted and directed. Tom Tykwer skillfully brings you into the world of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille through narration and superb imagery. Grenouille is born with an extraordinary sense of smell, and Tykwer brings this gift to the screen in such a magnificent way, that the viewer will feel they can 'smell' the film. (Hard to believe unless you watch, but it is true.) The movie is almost two and one-half hours, but I never felt bored or wished it were over. The story is captivating and you find yourself drawn into the world of Grenouille, wanting to love him and yet hating him for his terrible crimes. Ben Whishaw is perfect as Grenouille, plus the supporting cast of Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman and Rachel Hurd-Wood are perfectly cast as well. This is not your typical serial killer flick. Though the imagery can be quite difficult to take at times, it is not about blood and gore. Some scenes are not for the weak stomached, yet it's not about the violence of killing. My overall impression of the story was one of wanting a thing really badly, yet not realizing what it is one is truly seeking, yet upon obtaining what one thought they wanted, one finds they are extremely unfulfilled. This film was adapted from a novel by Patrick Suskind, which has to be just as extraordinary as the film, and now a book I must read. Highly recommended for the film connoisseur...
14
Transformers (2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
Marvelous! Michael Bay and the entire special effects team - I am awed by Transformers. The CGI/special effects of this film are unsurpassed by a film of today. Bring on the sequel...

For starters, I have never watched the TV show, so I cannot compare the movie to what came before it. I just know a great movie when I see one, and this one is unequaled. The plot is respectable, the actors fit the parts, the film is fast paced, filled with action, and the humor is supreme.... I could go on and on, but if you want to be completely entertained, go to the theater now and see this film.

There's only one thing not to love about this movie- the bad guys. LOL Who wants to love them anyway? We love to hate them, and this is exactly how you'll feel.

Did I mention the special effects? Seriously, you will be blown away. I could have gone back into the theater and re-watched this film once again today just to see the special effects.

I simply must own this on DVD. What's the release date? : )
15
The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
A powerful, poignant, thought-provoking, and challenging film ....
The story is sub plotted and each subplot plays out masterfully. This movie will capture your soul.
16
Schindler's List (1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Worthy of each Oscar it won, this film stands as a reminder that we must never forget....
17
To Kill A Mockingbird (1962,  Unrated)
To Kill A Mockingbird
Probably one of the best films ever made about racial prejudice and being unjustly accused of a crime. The script and actors are exceptional. This is one movie I will always hold dear to my heart for one of my strongest passions in life is that all men should be defended equally, without prejudice and receive a fair trial by a jury of their 'true' peers.
18
Forrest Gump (1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump is an enjoyable, entertaining and heart warming modern day fable. There are so many morals shown in this movie and I am sure I lost count of the total. The standout moral for me was the importance of integrity and simple goodness. This is well-scripted film, with outstanding acting.
19
A Christmas Story (1983,  PG)
A Christmas Story
A humorous Christmas movie set in the 1940's filled with nostalgia that every age can relate to on different levels It is a simple film which delivers in all aspects and truly a must watch at least once in your lifetime. TNT normally plays this film 24 hours during Christmas, but if you cannot watch it there, please rent the DVD. You will be glad you did for the memories it will evoke and the laughter it will bring.
20
Signs (2002,  PG-13)
Signs
M. Night Shyamalan lured viewers to Signs by using UFO's and aliens. In truth, the film has little to do with either. If you are only watching for the alien effect, you will not enjoy this gem of a movie. This film revolves around the spiritual and emotional journey of Gibson's character, Graham Hess. M. Night Shyamalan has put together a first-rate neoclassical thriller. There is tension, comic relief then the building of tension again. Are everyday occurrences coincidence? Does everything happen for a reason? Take the journey with Graham Hess in this masterpiece from M. Night Shyamalan
21
Apollo 13 (1995,  PG)
Apollo 13
For the crew of Apollo 13, it was a routine mission that went frighteningly wrong. Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) are the crew who are in the middle of this whole predicament. Back at mission control, flight director Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) and his crew try to figure out how to bring the crew home alive.

A captivating drama based upon real-life events, with strong performances and excellent direction, this is an entertaining and educational film. Set in the early 1970?s, the set is near perfect in reflecting the time period. The film shows us a piece of the US space program, while keeping us enthralled in the life/death situation developing aboard the spacecraft. If you are looking for some history, nail biting and just plain enjoyable film, this one is a must see...

22
Murder in the First (1994,  R)
Murder in the First
An extremely character driven movie, with one of the characters being a building, Alcatraz, whose story is based upon actual events- Although the story takes many liberties with the actual events, this is a powerful and insightful film. A real inside look into the horrid conditions of Alcatraz. Kevin Bacon gives an Oscar worthy performance. Christian Slater and Gary Oldham are brilliant, too. One of the best films I've ever viewed.
23
The Matrix (1999,  R)
The Matrix
A true sci-fi action thriller film that will leave you pondering the plot and sub-plots for a long, long time... This film is filled with amazing special effects, it is well scripted, the direction is flawless and the acting is almost perfection. You must pay attention to the plot and sub-plots as you watch; else, you will not understand The Matrix. You will be entertained whether you get the underlying meaning of this film or not, but if you comprehend what is playing out on the screen, you will never look at the world the same.
24
The Believer (2002,  R)
The Believer
A film with a highly provocative subject matter that should have received much more distribution and recognition.... Ryan Gosling shines as Danny Balint. This film demands you think about its subject matter. The beliefs and views in this film are portrayed strongly. Agree or disagree with the viewpoints, you cannot help but realize you have just watched a masterpiece of work.
25
Mystic River (2003,  R)
Mystic River
This incredible film with top-notch acting and a dark, suspenseful plot was one of the very best from 2003. Eastwood delivers a masterfully directed film that will keep you intrigued until the very end. The film is so riveting, you might not even realize as you watch that you have just witnessed some of the very best acting ever filmed. If you enjoy dark suspense, mystery and high drama, this film is a must.
26
It's a Wonderful Life (1946,  Unrated)
It's a Wonderful Life
This is a must watch in our home every Christmas season. Not just a Christmas movie, but also a 'make you think' film which plants itself into your heart and mind forever. Stellar performances from the cast and brilliantly shot, this film will move you to take a long look at yourself and your life. A must see classic for all...
27
The Green Mile (1999,  R)
The Green Mile
A beautiful, yet haunting look at a horrible crime- the execution of an innocent man...
This film is flawless from script, direction, cinematography to acting. The movie is long, but it should passionately hold your attention until the end. You will find joy, laughter and tears in this masterpiece of art.
28
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a work of art. Extraordinary script, exceptional character portrayals, impeccable direction, and striking visuals combine to enthrall viewers with the intricacy of the human mind and all of its majestic possibilities. This film is an unparalleled contrivance in movie making.
29
Raising Arizona (1987,  PG-13)
Raising Arizona
A serious crime has been committed. A baby has been kidnapped. In this screwball comedy, Joel and Ethan Coen almost make you forget that the characters of Nic Cage and Holly Hunter have committed a crime. This is a classic and hilarious film. It offers a well written script, excellent direction, great acting, kicking music, and moves at a fast pace. An eccentric film that kept me in stitches the first time I watched it, and continues to be one of my favorite comedies.
30
The Wizard of Oz (1939,  G)
The Wizard of Oz
Memorable... Classic... Filled with beauty and color, depth of character, heart and soul, this film captures all ages and is a must see. This is a film I grew up watching once every year. It still holds a special place in my heart for capturing the images a young soul imagines while growing up. Somewhere over the rainbow... Do we all not still have that part of the child in us? Yes, a place where dreams really do come true...
31
Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
32
Radio (2003,  PG)
Radio
This movie may be predictable, yet it is filled with lessons we could all learn about life and treating our fellow humans with respect and dignity. Ed Harris and Cuba Gooding, Jr are both spectacular in their respective roles. Knowing the film is based upon a real individual; one cannot help but have the heart strings tweaked a bit while watching.
33
Identity (2003,  R)
Identity
This is a must see thriller which journeys really close to the horror genre. The cast, led by John Cusack and Ray Liotta are all perfectly cast in their respective roles. Although the storyline lends itself to a few tried and true clichés, the twists and turns in this film will keep you glued to the screen. If you don't stay glued to the screen, you aren't going to 'get it' and you won't enjoy it. I fear to say more for the ending is the best part of this film, and I wouldn't want to inadvertently give it away. If you enjoy thriller, horror, suspenseful drama, and/or "who did it" genres, you really must see Identity. Be sure and put on your thinking cap when you hit play and get ready for a wild ride.
34
Eddie and the Cruisers (1983,  PG)
Eddie and the Cruisers
What this movie may lack in acting talent, it makes up for in the soundtrack. Great music!
35
I'm Only Looking: The Best of INXS (2004,  Unrated)
I'm Only Looking: The Best of INXS
A must own for INXS fans....
This music documentary contains some excellent segments with the band, plus some awesome music videos.
36
Streets of Fire (1984,  PG)
Streets of Fire
An oldie but goodie! Diane Lane is awesome. This movie has great music, a cute guy and it just kicks with the knife scenes.
37
M*A*S*H (MASH) (1970,  PG)
M*A*S*H (MASH)
Gritty, bloody, offensive- yes, this film has all that, and it is a true dark comedy that displays the insanity of war quite effectively. This movie spawned the TV show MASH, which is one of my all time favorite broadcast television shows. Donald Sutherland is wonderful as the outlandish Hawkeye. Viewed by many as an anti-war film, I never really felt that was the overall message being given. Just do not expect the TV show, for you will be disappointed. It is much darker than the television comedy, and there really is not a plot like one is accustomed to seeing.
38
Sybil (1976,  Unrated)
Sybil
Sybil is a notable psychological thriller based upon the true-life story of Sybil Dorset (not a real name but indeed a real person). Ms. Dorset suffered from unspeakable horrific treatment from her mother, which subsequently led to her developing sixteen different personalities. This film is most remarkable for the outstandingly brilliant performance of Sally Field as Sybil. Joanne Woodard is equally brilliant in her role as the psychologist who treats Sybil. This was a 1976 'made for TV' movie, yet it is still probably the most chilling portrait of evil ever shown on broadcast television. This riveting and disturbing look at child abuse will surround you with hope, yet sadden you as well. If the movie moves you, you will also want to read the factual accounting in the book 'Sybil' by Flora Rheta Schreiber. (Be sure to watch the movie on the 2 disc special edition DVD.)
39
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Another great look at Captain Jack Sparrow and gang, with more special effects than Curse of the Black Pearl, but it does not bring the 'heart' like its predecessor. I would have loved to see Geoffrey Rush more than just towards the ending. Overall, a very good film and one I would watch again.
40
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
Fellowship of the Ring is my favorite of the trilogy. The story, the sets, the costuming, the acting, the cinematography and the direction were all superb. J.R.R Tolkien was a master storyteller and Peter Jackson did an awesome job in weaving the message of the tale into film.
41
Benny & Joon (1993,  PG)
Benny & Joon
A warm and engrossing love story starring one of the most gifted actors of all time, Johnny Depp... The 'quirkiness' Johnny delivers on screen as Sam is priceless. A must own for Johnny Depp fans, and a must see for anyone who enjoys sweet and warm-hearted films. (A bit outside my favorite genres, but it is Johnny Depp, and it is touching.)
42
Sleepy Hollow (1999,  R)
Sleepy Hollow
Johnny Depp as the legendary Ichabod Crane is priceless. Tim Burton has created a classic thriller and a not so classic horror. Sleepy Hollow is a brilliant work of art Combining Burton and Depp with a superb supporting cast, magnificent cinematography, beautiful costuming, haunting music and the story of the headless horseman gives us a film full of mystery, magic, suspense and dark comedy. A nice little gem to add to any DVD collection...
43
The Village (2004,  PG-13)
The Village
Shyamalan's movies seem to require an emotional investment on the part of the viewer. I tend to like that in a film. The Village is no exception, and though torn apart by many critics, this atmospheric film is suspenseful, yet touching and ends with a nice twist. Howard, Phoenix, Brody and Hurt are wonderfully cast in their respective roles. Highly recommended for true movie buffs...
44
Stephen King's The Stand (,  Unrated)
Stephen King's The Stand
A great good versus evil mini-series film, which though a tad over six hours long, proves well worth the viewing... It is difficult to translate a Stephen King novel into a masterpiece film, but this one comes close. The novel still outshines the movie, but great casting, wonderful direction and an intriguing storyline make this a must own DVD for all King fans.
45
Enemy at the Gates (2001,  R)
46
Frequency (2000,  PG-13)
Frequency
A father-son time travel via communication thriller with a "feel good" ending... A most enjoyable film, which is well structured and much focused. Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel star as father and son, and I feel this is one of Caviezel's best performances ever. This movie contains some mystery, suspense, sci-fi and fantasy. Director, Gregory Hoblit, weaves it all together for a very unforgettable film.
47
Pay It Forward (2000,  PG-13)
Pay It Forward
A film that truly gets next to you... Light-hearted, yet dark, Hunt, Spacey and Osment prove worthy in delivering material which keeps you thinking for weeks after viewing. This film will make you laugh, cry and think about the meaning of life.
48
Dead Man Walking (1995,  R)
Dead Man Walking
*****Tear Jerker***** Tim Robbins brilliantly adapted and directed this film from the non-fiction book by Sister Helen Prejean. Though this movie may move slowly at times, it is a very emotional look at the last days on death row of a convicted rapist/murder. Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn give Oscar worthy performances as the spiritual advisor and convict, and Sarandon did win the best actress Oscar for this one. Though not totally unbiased, this film gives a frank and honest look at both sides of the death penalty debate. Thought provoking film that is a must for anyone who has an interest in the debate, pro and con, on the death penalty...
49
Edward Scissorhands (1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
This is still the best Burton-Depp film. Edward Scissorhands is a must see movie for all generations. A gothic meets suburbia modern day fairytale that is delightful and heartwarming. Johnny Depp brings Edward to life in way that simply is beyond description. There is a part of Edward that lives within us all- we want to fit in. One the best movies made in the 90's.
50
The Butterfly Effect (2004,  R)
The Butterfly Effect
Revisit your past, alter your past, see what the alterations do to your present- a thrill ride of a movie... Hang on tight & pay attention to detail in this well executed film. Kutcher may not grab you as the lead, but the story is an intriguing guilty pleasure viewing experience. Even with a few flaws this is a brain stimulating movie filled with suspenseful and interesting twists.
51
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975,  R)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
A film from my youth which I loved for its bizarreness! I may have finally outgrown this movie, but I'll never forget it. It's vulgar and weird, has some awesome music & it's such a classic film with a cult following. My hubby hates it, so it's fun to quote or mock around him.
52
Nell (1994,  PG-13)
Nell
This is one of my favorite performances by Jodie Foster. She is just phenomenal in the role of Nell. Stunning cinematography with a warm and touching storyline... May be a bit slow paced for some, but it is a gem of a movie.
53
Boys Don't Cry (1999,  R)
Boys Don't Cry
Maybe not the most elegantly shot film, but it is so powerful in delivering emotion that I rate it as one of my all time favorite movies. Hilary Swank is outstanding as Brandon Teena, a young female in search of herself and her gender identity. Based upon real events, the film does take some liberties, but the story is filled with raw emotion. This film holds nothing back in terms of harsh reality.
54
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
A fantasy film with breath-taking visuals, this is an extremely well done adaptation of the novel from C.S. Lewis. A hopeful fairy tale filled with spiritual undertone complete with action, fantasy, drama, and a brilliant musical score, this film is just right for all ages. The direction, scripting and acting are above average and the film is mesmerizing and heart-warming.
55
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
This shockingly menacing film about a serial killer which is cleverly written, brilliantly directed, and seductively evil will haunt your thoughts for days after viewing. This may be the best serial killer film ever made. Outstanding performances from a stellar cast combined with the dark subject matter make this a must see psychological thriller.
56
Secret Window (2004,  PG-13)
Secret Window
Take a Stephen King novella; add extinguished writer/director David Koepp and top if off with the brilliant Johnny Depp.... You'll have Secret Window, an excellent film from the psychological thriller genre. If you miss the symbolism in this film, you won't enjoy it. Pay close attention to all details. If you get it, you will love it. Let your mind be free while viewing... You'll be completely entertained.
57
Hoosiers (1989,  PG)
Hoosiers
Need to watch a feel good movie? A classic tale of redemption about a small town basketball team which stars Gene Hackman giving his normal Oscar worthy portrayal... Dennis Hopper is outstanding in the film as well. A well scripted and directed film for all ages, but the film is especially inspiring for the younger generation. The film delivers a message of team spirit as well as a nod to peaceful interaction with competitors.
58
Romeo and Juliet (1968,  PG)
Romeo and Juliet
Saw this film during my freshman year of high school while studying William Shakespeare..... A true classic film, both elegant and touching, which stars a very young Olivia Hussey.
59
Crash (2004,  R)
Crash
A complex masterpiece which is not a movie for escapism fans... An intriguing, masterfully woven blunt look at racism which will reel you in and not let go until the movie is over. Even then it will not let go and you'll be taking a closer look at yourself and those around you. A must see film!
60
I Am Sam (2002,  PG-13)
I Am Sam
A delightful movie! Sean Penn is brillant as Sam. This movie will bring tears to your eyes and make you look deep within yourself. Highly recommended...
61
The Lost Boys (1987,  R)
The Lost Boys
A classic from the 80's.... More humor than horror movie which stars some of the icon actors of the 1980's.... A fun movie, well worth renting on DVD... Kick back with your popcorn and enjoy. This film has one of the most awesome soundtracks, so you'll be rocked throughout the viewing!
62
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004,  PG)
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
Visually stunning.... love the Edwardian era costuming... Never having read the books, I must say I truly enjoyed this film. Jim Carrey plays Count Olaf wonderfully. He not only brings a humor to the role, he is so repulsively heinous, that you can't help but cheer for the children to outwit him. An overall great cast and charming movie which ends on a hopeful note, not what one might expect from a film of this nature. This essence of this film is in the art- costuming, lighting, FX and the sets.
63
From Hell (2001,  R)
From Hell
The plot may be a bit contrived, but this is a fantastic film. Depp as usual is perfection on screen. Keep in mind while viewing that this is a fictional movie and not a documentary on Jack the Ripper. Just enjoy the cinematography of the film, the dark, sinister and quirky plot, the beauty of Victorian England and some grisly murder scenes.
64
Twister (1996,  PG-13)
Twister
Not a masterpiece, not riveting, not the best of its genre, but a fun film to watch. Helen Hunt is just one of those actresses you have to love. She's always good, no matter what the genre or how bad the film. The special effects wouldn't hold up to the standard used today, but they were good for this film. The tornados are frightening and it gives you a feel for what those who live in tornado alley must experience. An entertaining movie from 1996 and would be a good rental for most. The cow scene is awesome.
65
The Pianist (2002,  R)
The Pianist
The true story of Wladyslaw Szpilman (acclaimed Polish composer) which follows his life transformation during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw in WWII is a masterpiece film. Adrien Brody brilliantly portrays Szpilman's sympathetic character. A man, whose guilt at his own survival causes him to fight many inner demons, all the while leading him to have the will to continue to fight for his life delivers insight into human nature. A film filled with beauty and horror that is riveting to view. It may be a bit slow paced in areas for some viewer tastes, but it is a story well worth watching from which much can be learned.
66
L.A. Confidential (1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
A brilliantly scripted film which focuses on police corruption in the 1950's that is a must see for Spacey and Crowe fans. The acting is this film is top notch. The dialogue is smart and witty. Bassinger is wonderful and beautiful. Guy Pearce was new to me, but WOW! This Aussie was made for this film. Great movie!
67
The Last Castle (2001,  R)
The Last Castle
A very character driven movie with outstanding performances by the cast- This film has action, drama and fireworks. It's more prison oriented than war oriented and Redford is phenomenal. The ending could have been more concrete, so for that alone, I won't go 5 stars.

Ever had a bad day? How about a really bad day? You have to watch this film. This film captures a day in the life of an ordinary man that is beyond bad.....

Jacob's Ladder (1990,  R)
Jacob's Ladder
The plot line listed here on Flixster doesn't even begin to detail the intense and beautiful plot of this film. Are you ready for a roller coaster ride filled with psychological mind bending reality? If so, this film is just what the doctor ordered. The scenes in this film are for mature audiences. There is nudity, foul language, and graphic violence yet, the ending is one of extreme beauty. That is, if you understand the ending. An open mind, not dwelling on reality and making sense of order is needed to fully enjoy this film. You may have to watch it more than once to truly comprehend the story being told. Tim Robbins does a masterful job in portraying Jacob Singer.

The Sixth Sense (1999,  PG-13)

Just plain out fun! An enjoyable romantic comedy... Josh Lucas is "to die for" in this film.
74
Bravo Two Zero (1999,  R)
Bravo Two Zero
Sean Bean is extraordinary in this film about a British SAS patrol caught behind enemy lines. Based upon actual events which occurred during the Gulf War in 1991 this film is a tribute to the men who served in the unit whose call sign was Bravo Two Zero. This has to be one of the best war films ever made. Without all the Hollywood embellishment, the film focus is on the men on the ground. This is their story of survival in a war zone. A must see for any military movie buff.
75
Children of Men (2006,  R)
Children of Men
A poignant masterpiece on a world gone mad with globalization... This film hooked me from the start and kept me enthralled until the end. It left me wanting more. Great loose adaptation of the P D James novel. Clive Owen was amazingly brilliant and along with stellar performances by the supporting cast, this film takes the viewer along for a meaningful look at what our world could easily become. From script, acting, directing, location, and cinematography, this film will not leave you bored, but leave you wanting to know more....
76
The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
A twist of a story! Pay close attention and you may guess what's going on... Christian Bale shines as a twisted character. Hugh Jackman doesn't quite capture the vengeful side of his character, but his performance doesn't distract from the plot. Well written script, extraordinary costuming which captures the Victorian age beautifully, and a catchy plot make this film. I enjoyed this film more than the Illusionist.
77
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
I've never seen Internal Affairs, the Hong Kong original of this film, nor do I care to... This film by Scorsese is a masterpiece of thriller suspense, brutal violence, and smart humor wrapped up with superb character development. DiCaprio shows a talent I wasn't aware he possessed. This may be his career performance to date. For the first time ever, I count myself a fan of DiCaprio. Wahlberg was stellar and my only complaint was he didn't receive enough screen time. Damon and Sheen were well cast for their parts. Nicholson was his usual mad self. This is one I could watch more than once. Very worthy of the 4 Oscars it received.

The Libertine (2006,  R)
The Libertine
A captivating film about the life of John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester brilliantly filmed and scripted. Though not a film for all audiences due to the sexual frankness shown throughout, the movie captures the life of John Wilmot with beauty and clarity rarely seen in dramatic biographies. The costuming and lighting of the film illuminate the mid 1600's of England splendidly. Johnny Depp once again delved into a character and made the character come to life. My husband referred to Depp as being erratic in the film, and I disagree. Depp portrayed the most notorious debauchee of the Restoration court perfectly. Kudos to the talents of the supporting cast - John Malkovich (Charles II), Richard Coyle (Alcock), Rosamund Pike (Elizabeth Malet), Samantha Morton (Elizabeth Barry), and Rupert Friend (Downs). An excellent period piece and a must see for Depp and Malkovich fans.

The Thin Blue Line (1988,  Unrated)
The Thin Blue Line
A powerful documentary which aided in the release of a man wrongfully convicted of murder- Errol Morris deserves a medal for doing what the Texas justice system could not do... finding the guilty party.

Watching this well structured documentary on video in 1989 forever changed my feelings about the death penalty. Just knowing an innocent man was convicted, sentenced to death and spent 13 years of his life in prison was enough for me to know there are serious flaws within the justice system in the state of Texas. If it could happen there, could it happen anywhere in the United States? The abundance of evidence shown in this film makes one wonder what if this happened to me or someone I love? How do you prove your innocence.?? Randall Dale Adams found himself in just this situation. If you have any interest in the workings of the justice system and/or the death penalty, you would do well to rent this DVD. The book, Adams vs. Texas, authored by Randall Dale Adams, William Hoffer and Marilyn Mona Hoffer sheds even more light on the plight of Mr. Adams.

The Lookout (2007,  R)
The Lookout
An extremely well written script coupled with superb acting makes The Lookout an above average crime drama. Not only did Scott Frank write a wonderful screenplay, his directorial debut comes through with shining colors. The character development is far beyond what so many crime movies offer, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a most gifted and talented actor. This one is well worth the rental if you did not manage to catch it at the theater.
82
The Descent (2006,  R)
The Descent
The Descent went far beyond my expectations. Having gotten used to horror films in which the horror is in thinking about someone torturing you, I was expecting something along the same lines. What a pleasant shock to actually have been taken by surprise and find myself screaming aloud during this film! Six women friends, a mountain getaway, an unexplored cave, creepy crawlers and a brilliant sub-plot entwining the lives of two of the women... Excellent writing, scripting and directing from Neil Marshall! The film contains enough blood and gore to satisfy, but it's the storyline which grabs hold of you. The DVD contains many enlightening special features. If you like horror movies even a little bit, this one is highly recommended.

Zodiac (2007,  R)
Zodiac
A film based upon actual events regarding the killer who terrorized parts of California during the late 1960's and early 1970's- The Zodiac killer... The film focus is on the detectives and newsmen, including a cartoonist who diligently tried to solve the case of the Zodiac killer. As of this day (8/5/07), the case remains unsolved.

Having done numerous research on the Zodiac myself, this film follows the history of the events very accurately. The film is well scripted and superbly directed, but it is by far the acting which takes center stage. Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards and the supporting cast literally bring the film to life. Many times I've read reviews referring to the movie as being too long, and I was surprised to find I never noticed the time during my viewing. The film never bored me and kept me enthralled in the story from beginning to end. As for some reviewers who haven't like the ending... Well, the movie did have to reach a stopping point and the crimes committed by the Zodiac are still unsolved. Personally, I liked the ending as it showed who the main detective and the cartoonist believed was the Zodiac.

84
Fracture (2007,  R)
Fracture
Gregory Holbit must have been thrilled directing Hopkins and Gosling in this highly entertaining crime drama. Anthony Hopkins is a master at portraying manipulative characters, and Ryan Gosling continues to show that he is just a natural in front of the camera. Fracture is more of a drama than a psychological suspense thriller and should be billed as such. If you view this film with that in mind, you will find this is an extremely well done screenplay. There is even a bit of a twist to the ending. The supporting cast works well with Hopkins and Gosling, but for me, it was Gosling who stole this film. He is perfectly brilliant on screen.

The Onion Field
This is an older film and I believe the book unfolds much better than the film. This is a true story about a senseless execution by petty criminals. This film will make you angry. Your anger will be directed at our justice system. This movie shows you just how the victims are often treated as though they were the criminal. Chilling... James Woods plays the psychotic killer to perfection.

3: The Dale Earnhardt Story (2004,  Unrated)
3: The Dale Earnhardt Story
ESPN put together an excellent film to portray the legendary Dale Earnhardt. Although this is an unauthorized life story, the over-all accuracy portrayed is to be commended. Die-hard Earnhardt fans might dislike the showing of the legends faults, but he was just a man and therefore a bit less than perfect. A great movie for race fans, and I even think those who are not race fans just might enjoy the story. Barry Pepper is phenomenal as Dale Earnhardt.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993,  PG-13)
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story
This is a touching and well-done film on the life of Bruce Lee. Jason Scott Lee and Lauren Holly are mesmerizing as Bruce and Linda Lee. Any fan of Bruce Lee will want to see this film. I must admit to having a lump in my throat each time the film showed the children, especially with the birth of Brandon. The ending seemed a bit rushed and could have been stronger, but overall this is an excellent tribute to Mr. Lee and his life.

The Ultimate Gift (2006,  PG)
The Ultimate Gift
The Ultimate Gift is an awe-inspiring movie! First class acting from start to finish, with an unforgettable storyline, this film is perfect for family viewing. Other than moving slowly in a few spots, this film held me completely and totally immersed in the story. Abigail Breslin (Emily) stole my heart from her first moment on camera, and then... Well, let me just say I needed several tissues before this film was over. The movie contains many life lessons that so many of us humans need to visit more often.

Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor)
Action, Thrills, Sci-Fi, special effects and VAMPIRES are all rolled into this one marvelous film! Excellent direction, acting, sets and cinematography from beginning to end will keep you hooked on this one. Did I mention it has some awesome vampires? Hollywood has a difficult time portraying supernatural fantasy as well as this Russian flick. Good vs. Evil vampires.... Love it! Plus, it's the first of a trilogy. Can't wait until I can view the next two....

The Devil's Rejects (2005,  R)
The Devil's Rejects
Rob Zombie has corralled himself a forever fan! This movie is brutal, sadistic, violent, gripping, chilling and not for everyone, but if you enjoy movies which are unpredictable and quite realistic in their brutality, this one is for you. Each actor fits his character perfectly, the scenes flow and the cinematography and soundtrack could not have been done any better. It's almost shameful to say that such a movie is enjoyable, but this one is awesome. In some ways, the film makes you feel as though you are watching a documentary about an insane family on a killing spree. It has remnants of 'Helter Skelter' and the Manson family. There are just a handful of movies I could watch again immediately after viewing, but this is one of those kind. (I've never seen House of 1000 Corpses and really cannot compare the two films, but I don't think it could match the realistic feel of this one.) If you like your movies filled with brutal violence and gore, this is one you'll want to see. For me, this is a must own on DVD. Highly recommended, plus you will want to see the unrated 2 disc DVD set which contains '30 Days of Hell, the making of The Devil's Rejects'.

Behind Enemy Lines (2001,  PG-13)
Behind Enemy Lines
A last recon flight by US Navy over Bosnia goes bad really fast. After the plane is shot down, Owen Wilson's character must fight for his survival. Gene Hackman plays the US Navy Admiral in charge of the mission flight.

A surprisingly well scripted film which is fast paced and action filled. Wilson shows a talent we rarely see from him. Maybe he should make more films without Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. This film may lack in the realism department and the storyline is the somewhat overused 'American hero finding himself in a will to survive situation', but it is much better than one might expect. Suspenseful and tense at times, the film also shows some valid insights into war torn Bosnia. Even though the film is somewhat cheesy and simplistic at times, the action and special effects are first rate. If you don't mind fictionalized war movies, this one is worth checking out.

Capote (2005,  R)
Capote
From the profound screenplay by Dan Futterman to the exquisite editing by Christopher Tellefsen, Capote is a preeminent film about the life of Truman Capote during the years in which he researched and wrote In Cold Blood. The novel by Capote is heralded as the break through true crime novel and catapulted Mr. Capote to international fame. This film tastefully takes you into the narcissistic world of Mr. Capote, yet flawlessly embodies the spirit of the man that made him quite 'the life of the party'. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's sterling portrayal of Capote was mesmerizing. Bennett Miller's impeccable direction was definitive throughout the film. The supporting cast of Catherine Keener, William Cooper, Clifton Collins, Jr., Mark Pellegrino and others consummated this masterpiece of a film. The engrossing cinematography and unerring costuming added the perfect relish for this historical and captivating gem of a movie.

**note~ Lovers of true crime will probably enjoy this film more than the average movie watcher. Seeing Capote interact with the two killers illustrates why In Cold Blood was lauded as the break through true crime novel.

The Machinist (2004,  R)
The Machinist
Scott Kossar wrote a masterpiece, Brad Anderson brought it to life on film, and Christian Bale executed the lead role perfectly. This film is a must see for lovers of the 'psychological thriller' genre. Throughout this moody and atmospheric journey of insomnia with Trevor Reznik (Bale), you just know there have to be answers at the end. This film has an ending, and oh what an ending it is! If you like twists, you will not want to miss this film.
108
I Am Legend (2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
Will Smith is brilliant as Robert Neville, the army scientist trying to create a cure for the virus which wiped out the population. The deserted New York setting is truly a work of perfection within the excellent cinematography of I Am Legend. The CG effects used throughout this film were stunning. The plot is interesting and flows well from beginning to end. A great action/post-apocalyptic movie, which turns out to be quite touching- Highly recommended...

No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
The Coen brothers have another masterpiece film to add to their repertoire. No Country For Old Men is film noir at its best, classic cinema and masterfully dark and funny. Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem make this film wrap itself into your psyche while viewing. Tommy Lee Jones shines as usual, but his character is used sparingly throughout the film. Simplistic, yet complex, No Country For Old Men is an unforgettable mind challenging gem of a movie.
110
Juno (2007,  PG-13)
Juno
An excellent smart quirky comedy that still finds a way to creep into the tender side of your heart... Ellen Page rocks this poignant film about a teenage pregnancy from writer Diablo Cody. Page brings the cocky and smart Juno to life in a way I don't feel any other actress could have done. Oscar cheers to Page for making Juno one of the best films of 2007. Jason Reitman directed the film brilliantly, and the supporting cast was perfect for their respective roles. With a story that has been overdone many times, Juno brings heart and comedy in a 'Napoleon Dynamite' way. Don't miss seeing this one....

Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Cate Blanchett is Elizabeth the virgin queen! Apocalypto (2006,  R)
Apocalypto
Whatever one may think of Mel Gibson, the man is a genius at making films. Apocalypto is brilliant! The cinematography, the costuming, the acting, and the story are woven together to make an intense and touching film about the Mayan and civilization in general. Gibson was most masterful at bringing the viewer into the story and keeping their attention until the end. Apocalypto is truly a work of art....

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007,  R)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Where does one begin in trying to describe a flawless film? Mere words fail me. Beginning to end this film just engrosses one beyond imagination. Words which easily come to mind: brilliant, emotive, paramount- each adjective could be used for the script, score, directing, acting and cinematography. Pitt and Affleck illuminate James and Ford in degrees that leaves one both hating and feeling empathy for each. A haunting look at one of America's most celebrated outlaws and the man who killed him. A must see...

Gone Baby Gone (2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
GBG is not just a film about a missing little girl. This film is filled with twists and turns galore. Moral dilemmas feature heavily throughout the script. Excellently written and directed beautifully, the actors deliver perfectly making this film quite phenomenal. GBG is one of the class acts of 2007.

Rescue Dawn (2007,  PG-13)
Rescue Dawn
Films based upon true stories, especially those involving POWs, really move me. Herzog has a brilliant little gem in Rescue Dawn. The outstanding cinematography by Peter Zietlinger has one feeling as though they are indeed stepping through the jungles of Laos. Bale, Zahn, and Davies awe-inspiring performances bring the POWs to life with dignity, grace, and humor. Herzog's script is just perfect. Telling the story of Dieter Dengler and his fellow POWs with very little melodrama, Herzog captures the spirit of Dieter in an impressive dramatization of survival. The score is hauntingly beautiful and molds to the film wonderfully. Herzog's script and direction are Oscar worthy. A must see film....

There Will Be Blood (2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
A film unlike any other in 2007.... Paul Thomas Anderson delivers a knockout punch with There Will Be Blood! The cinematography, writing, scripting, directing, scoring and acting blend the story of a lust for power into a cinematic masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis has no rivals. He is the ultimate actor. A film everyone should see, just to say they've seen it. Even if you end up hating it. (Seems the reviews are split on this one.) Once There Will Be Blood releases on Blu-Ray, it will become a centerpiece in my collection.

3:10 to Yuma (2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
Disclaimer: I have not seen the original 3:10 to Yuma.

Once upon a time I enjoyed a good western. It's been a long time coming, but 3:10 to Yuma is a classic yet modern western with all the goodies. The story may not be the best scripted, but the acting, cinematography, the score, the directing, and the action are above average. Most enjoyable are the characters portrayed by Russell Crowe (Ben Wade) and Ben Foster (Charlie Prince). Wade and Prince are the 'bad' guys. Crowe and Foster shine in these roles. The hero is an odd character, but Bale portrays him perfectly for the script. The supporting cast add to the movie and do not distract. Watching this on Blu-Ray, I must say the surround sound was awesome. Overall, this may not be a must see movie, but if you ever enjoyed a good western, this one should sit well with you.

118
Lars and the Real Girl (2007,  PG-13)
Lars and the Real Girl
Though not the all out comedy I had expected from the trailers, Lars & The Real Girl is an original and funny, yet absolutely touching look at acceptance of those who are different. With a fresh concept and a new twist on looking at one form of mental illness, Nancy Oliver (writer) and Craig Gillespie (director) have given movie viewers an almost perfect film. Ryan Gosling is hand downs one of todays best actors and he literally brings Lars to life before your eyes. The supporting cast are stellar and each fits his/her character like a glove. Humorous, compassionate and filled with humanity, this is a must see film.
119
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
Iron Man lives up to its hype! The movie ROCKS! Robert Downey Jr. was perfectly cast as Tony Stark. The supporting cast fit their respective roles like a glove. The script is intelligent, the special effects are just enough, the character building works well, the direction is good (great cameo by Favreau), the action/fight scenes leave you wanting more and one can only hope a sequel will be forthcoming. Though I'm not a comic book fan, I'd have to say Iron Man rivals Batman Begins as the best comic book movie to date. The only thing (outside the crappy screen & sound of our local cinema) I found lacking was the score. Batman Begins does have a better score than Iron Man. The best thing about this film is that you don't have to be a fan of Iron Man comics to totally enjoy it.
120
Eastern Promises (2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
Cronenberg delivers the goods with Eastern Promises. A well researched and finely executed film revolving around the Russian mafia. The pace of the film, along with Cronenberg's direction was just perfect. The script is brilliantly written. Viggo Mortensen is stellar as Nikolai (no elaboration as I don't want to include any spoilers). The Oscar nomination was well deserved. The supporting cast was excellent as well. The film should have received an Oscar nod for best picture.
121
Michael Clayton (2007,  R)
Michael Clayton
A stylish and classy legal thriller with a slow paced build-up which works perfectly.... Michael Clayton was well deserving of the Oscar nominations received. From the brilliantly written script, the superb direction and outstanding acting, this is one of the top films from 2007. Clooney and Wilkinson work magically together in their respective roles, and the remaining cast make the film work on all levels. A legal suspense/thriller which is a bit different than most.
122
30 Days of Night (2007,  R)
30 Days of Night
Aside from a slight lack of realism (using a lighted diner for hiding out/152 people can't all be found by vampires in 30 days), this is an awesome vampire flick. David Slade and company brought just the right styling, mood and atmospheric cinematography to 30 Days of Night. The vampires are not the romantic type used so often, but truly cruel and vicious. It's all about the feeding, and though the violence is somewhat graphic, it is not over the top. Josh Harnett as Eben, the local sheriff, was the perfect protector. He should stick to dramatic roles of this nature and leave the romantic comedies to others. Ben Foster needed a much larger role as he brings 'freak' to the screen like no other. The negative reviews of this film flabbergast me. It is a very entertaining vampire movie.
123
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005,  R)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Comic film-noir at it's best! Robert Downey, Jr and Val Kilmer are hilarious in this Shane Black dark comedy. The dialogue alone is priceless. If you like dark comedy, this is a must see!
124
Closer (2004,  R)
Closer
'I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You'... One of those movie songs which perfectly matches the film and I can't get it out of my head! WOW~ how to describe this almost genius of a film?! Raw, incredible, exotic, erotic, and masterful are words which come to the front of my mind. Complexity and simplicity rolled into one make Closer one of the most interesting films I've had the pleasure of viewing. Though not a film for all audiences (graphic language, subject matter, nudity/sexuality), Patrick Marber has written a superb script involving deception, intimacy, infidelity and sacrifice. Clive Owen, Jude Law and Natalie Portman give award winning performances, and even Julia Roberts doesn't fall flat in Closer. A truly spellbinding film....
125
Revolver (2005,  R)
Revolver
Revolver is a very complex film, and it is Guy Ritchie's true masterpiece. It is not Snatch, so if that is what you're anticipating, you may well be disappointed. You shouldn't be because Revolver spins circles around Snatch, in a good way. This film is mature and it requires your undivided attention. Attention not just focused upon the dazzling cinematography or the brilliance of the performances, but your focus must stay with the dialogue. Revolver is a psychological action thriller and if you listen for the symbolism and hints given along the way, you'll find this film just short of perfection. Superbly written and directed, masterfully shot, the perfect soundtrack, brilliant performances - you'll either love it or hate it.
126
The Patriot (2000,  R)
The Patriot
The Patriot is not a history lesson on the American Revolutionary War. It is a film presented by Hollywood. The Patriot is a great film. Though the story may be cliché filled, the acting, costuming and cinematography are outstanding. How can I not love a character who would prefer not to fight a grisly war, yet circumstances beyond his control give him no choice but to fight for his family and ultimately for his country?
127
A Scanner Darkly (2006,  R)
A Scanner Darkly
disclaimer: I am not familiar with the writings of Philip K Dick and therefore cannot compare this film to the novel.

Coherent sentences to describe A Scanner Darkly seem to be eluding me. Descriptive wording flows easily after one viewing of this film. Words such as brilliant, weird, strangely haunting, thought provoking, clever, intriguing, trippy and the list could go on and on. Bottom line being, A Scanner Darkly is a cult film which could easily be a masterpiece.

Although visually stunning, the performances of Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey, Jr., Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane and Winona Ryder make this film the mindboggling experience film fanatics love.

A Scanner Darkly has many depths below its surface. The view must maintain focus at all times. If you get the messages in this film, you will be blown away.

Sleuth (2007,  R)
Sleuth
Andrew Wyke: Why have I never heard of you?
[on Milo being an actor]

Milo Tindle: You will before long.

Andrew Wyke: Really?

Milo Tindle: In Spades.

Andrew Wyke: That sounds threatening.

Milo Tindle: Does it?

Andrew Wyke: Doesn't it?

Sleuth is brilliantly directed and has such awesome camera angles! Kudos to Haris Zambarloukos for his excellent cinematography. The film is a remarkable psychological suspense which shows the depths of talent Caine and Law can bring to the screen. Caine is always at the top of his game, and Law meets him head to head in this one. Highly recommended....

Wristcutters - A Love Story
A unique and quirky film which captivates the attention from the start. The score and cinematography are nothing less than brilliant. The writing, direction and acting are top notch. The bizarre plot threw me off, but the film is mellow, has humor and absolutely fascinates the mind. A must see ...

Cloverfield (2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
WOW! Intense and highly entertaining... Cloverfield is an awesome viewing experience if you just let yourself become immersed in the disaster aspect of the film. From the hand-held filming to masterful FX, Cloverield will capture your attention and not let go until the end. (Don't expect scary, instead focus on the intensity of disaster.) Kudos to the cast and crew for bringing a new kind of monster movie to the screen. Bring on the sequel.....

Burn After Reading (2008,  R)
Burn After Reading
Burn After Reading is an enjoyable black comedy/drama served up Coen style. Weirdly enough, it revolves only around middle aged people and the government intelligence community of Washington, DC. The casting was marvelous and each shined in their wacky character role. Only the Coen brothers could make something out of nothing.... BAR makes for a fun viewing!

Equilibrium (2002,  R)
Equilibrium
An action film with intelligence... Though Equilibrium may share similarities to Matrix and 1984, it has it's own uniqueness and it is a fun film to watch. Christian Bale is extraordinaire as John Preston. The fight scenes are fantastic and the film has just enough twists. The set works perfectly for this post WW3 sci-fi film. Kurt Wimmer has created a cult classic!

Find Me Guilty (2006,  R)
Find Me Guilty
Based upon a true story, this court room drama is filled with humor and is very touching. Vin Diesel is fantastic as Jackie Dinorsio and if not for such a great supporting cast, he would have stolen the show. The script is well written and the story is very interesting. A must see for true story film buffs, court room drama buffs and Vin Diesel fans.... just don't expect the action you're accustomed to from him.

Terminator Salvation (2009,  PG-13)
Terminator Salvation
A different feel than the previous Terminator films- more bleak and grim.....

Terminator Salvation is an action packed film. Introducing the resistance fighters of 2018, a world in which John Connor is an adult and trying to save his father, Kyle Reese. The film is well shot, the acting matches the characters, and the action is awesome. The story and characters aren't developed enough, but these points alone do not distract from the enjoyment of watching an action film. Aside from a couple of cheesy moments, which the film would not have suffered without, Terminator Salvation is a great new addition to the franchise. The plot does leave open a road to follow for future installments.

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans (2009,  R)
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans
Viktor (vampire) and Lucian (Lycan) the prequel equals the best film in the franchise. Nighy and Sheen are quite simply- AWESOME. This look at what created the great war between the vampires and the Lycans is not only well written and acted, the costuming and darkness shine throughout the films entirety. The only con would be the CGI on some of the Lycan shots was a bit too CGI. This third installment only leaves me wanting more from Viktor and Lucian.

Defiance (2009,  R)
Defiance
After viewing Defiance, I found myself without any negative criticisms for the film. From beginning to end, this true tale of the Bielski brothers WWII adventures into the Blearussian forest is captivating and astonishing. The polished script, flawless cinematography and brilliant acting are just icing on the cake for this inspiring story of Jewish people who resisted the Nazi occupation.

Jet Li's Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (Legend of a Fighter)
Jet Li's Fearless is a masterpiece film. Combining the story of Huo Yuan Jia and awesome Chinese martial arts, the film is a happy, sad, intense, thrilling, captivating roller coaster ride from beginning to end. Brilliantly directed and superbly acted, if you enjoy Chinese martial art films, you will be blown away with Fearless.

Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
The best non-action packed film aside from In Bruges that I've seen from 2008. A multi-layered, engaging, entertaining and surprising look at 'old school' attitudes through the life of Korean War vet Walt Kowalski. Eastwood brings Walt to life in a way only Eastwood can, with magnificent clarity. This film feels genuine in its story, the emotions and the lessons being offered. Definitely a film for which Eastwood should always be remembered.
