this is one of those movies that gets better every time you watch it. you have to pay attention to get what's going on...but if you're not paying attention, why watch a movie? an interesting take on all different aspects of love.
all the magic of childhood with none of the innocence. Pan's Labyrinth was a startling, surreal film set in 1940's fascist Spain. The young heroine (creates? or discovers?) an underground fairy world which contrasts with (and sometimes, grotesquely, mirrors) her real life in the house of a brutal, bloodthirsty soldier. This movie is not for the faint of heart; it is shockingly violent, but also complex. One of the characters insists that life is not a fairy tale... but the movie shows that the fairy tale can be just as horrifying as real life. The art direction and special effects were hypnotizing; Guillermo del Toro paid close attention to detail, allowing the audience to get easily (and sometimes uncomfortably) lost in the movie.
an eye-opening story; true-to-life and triumphant. hard to watch johnny cash debilitated by drugs, but fun to watch june tackle the problem. great acting, outstanding music!
