The Savages - R Depressing. Remind me not to get old, and not to die. Both Hoffman and Liney are great. January 12, 2008

Charlie Wilson's War - R You've got to love a movie that starts with a playboy centerfold naked in a hottub and finishes with the seeds of the current war in Afghanistan. It manages to pull off both laugh-out-loud funny and fascinating as so much historical context for the current situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan is background for the story. Go see this movie! The Great Debaters - PG-13 Denzel is great, as always. Moving finale, with a lead up both depressing (the Jim Crow South sure did suck) and inspiring. December 28, 2007

The Golden Compass - PG-13 Massive disappointment. The battle scene at the end and the set design and cinematography are all great, but at heart, the story is kind of retarded December 22, 2007

Juno - PG-13 Maybe the most fun movie of the year. Tons of laugh out loud moments - Ellen Page's Juno has a fantastic deadpan sense of humor. I also like that the screenplay was written by a stripper. December 15, 2007

Beowulf - PG-13 Saw it in 3D at the imax. Eye candy, with lots of equal opportunity near nude bulging going on to keep everyone happy. Fundamentally though, just OK December 10, 2007

Atonement - R Good "weepy" but not as good as the book. Everyone suffers very telegenically December 7, 2007

Dan in Real Life - PG-13 Since my mother in law chose this movie, i didn't have high expectations, but was pleasantly surprised at this funny, charming, family friendly movie November 24, 2007

No Country for Old Men - R In Texas, men are stoic, inventive, and willing to kill people. That's more or less what I always suspected. November 17, 2007

The Darjeeling Limited - R Dial the randomness up to 11. A collection of lovely individual scenes, shot in some truly cinematic Indian locations, but barely tied together into a whole October 27, 2007

Michael Clayton - R I was expecting this to be a courtroom thriller. It was way more exciting than that. George Clooney keeps being in good movies.

Interesting to see that the General Counsel for UNorth was cast as a woman.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - PG-13 Cate Blanchett is great again. Cinematically gorgeous. Elizabeth's speech on the eve of battle had me clapping and cheering (on the inside!) October 19, 2007

The Kingdom - R I was expecting this to be jingoistic USA USA USA #1 action movie in the mode of Rambo, but this was a great movie. Surprisingly nuanced and balanced, and insightful commentary on why blood feud wars go on for so long. Jennifer Garner keeps her situations covered. October 8, 2007

Mr. Woodcock - PG-13 September 19, 2007

Eastern Promises - R Viggo and Naomi inhabit their characters completely. A scary look into the nasty world of the Russian mob. The bathhouse fight scene was brutal. remind me not to get into any knife fights September 15, 2007

United 93 - R It's OK to cry.

It's been 6 years since the attacks and it gets easy to forget what it was like that day. This brought it back for me in a very real way. I was in NY that day and lived half a mile from ground zero. This movie made my skin crawl the way it did that day. Not pleasant, but important to remember
