fucking hilarious. the beginning alone made me laugh out fucking loud. don't be a stupid hater and pretend you're all elitist and are too good for this cause you know what, maybe it's too good for you. maybe you've lost your ability to suspend your grown up garb and maybe you hate fun, those are the only logical explanations i can think of as to why you would not think this was funny. well jack black wasn't funny, but really he's the only not funny thing about this movie. ben stiller, goddamn you've got some balls!

ok so you have to take this one with the grain of stupidity salt, don't expect anything but ridiculous hilarity...really funny, had some great lines but fell apart for me at the end, ultimately though i laughed my ass off so it definitely accomplished it's goal

The Dark Knight
by DerekSo after all the hype finally starts to subside I give in to curiosity...I consider myself a lifelong Batman enthusiast and an avid reader of the lore...the Dark Knight is perhaps the only "superhero" I have ever really truly embraced (sans Robin) ... considering that deep down he's really just a man-conflicted that just happens to have the means and the mind to be something extraordinary...but considering Christopher Nolan's first entry into this fascinating character's world I have to admit I approached this follow-up with a certain degree of skepticism...I wanted this film to work just as badly as every other die hard Batman fanboy to be sure...the director borrows heavily from the pages of some of the finest comic book scribes to ever approach the Caped Crusader...the guys that gave Batman a reality check and threw him into a noir world that helped define the cult icon that he is today, Nolan and company capture this feel rather skillfully at times but also of course take great liberties in melding their own arch and perhaps lose subtlety in their cinematic vision and the results are frankly rather uneven almost jarred together... and Christian Bale, with all his talent almost seems to resent wearing the suit too damn much to bring any real depth to his role and instead continues to go from suave and arrogant Bruce Wayne to an alter ego that moves stiffly and speaks with a contrived growl, not exactly the graceful crime-fighter I like to imagine...something just seems to be missing in his portrayal to me... and on to his nemesis Joker, the late Heath Ledger does his best Jack Nicholson impersonation...the real joke is that the masses so easily proclaim it an Oscar-worthy performance because of his untimely death...all-in-all over-hyped comes to mind but the right word is dissonance.
My thoughts on this summer's biggest blockbuster...

Irma Vep
by El HombreBurned out new wave director, played by one-time Truffaut alter ego Jean-Pierre Léaud, decides to remake Louis Feuillade's french melodrama, Les Vampires, with the Hong Kong starlet Maggie Cheung as the black-latex-clad leader of a gang of jewel thieves.
Amusing behind-the-scenes look at the French film industry that's critical of how it's funded, how it looks upon its' cinematic legacy and how its' complancency, seriousness, self-importance, fighting and jealousies crush any real creativity. Maggie Cheung, who in the film can't understand the french language, is great to watch as she's allowed to be herself and put her own personality into the film, improvising and reacting with surprise and incomprehension to the insanity around her.
If you've considered french films to be pretentious, here's one that allows you to laugh at the making of such.

Buffalo Soldiers
by scott1989, the end of the cold war, the berlin wall is coming down, and what do a platoon of american soldiers do when there isnt a war to fight, but stuck in a foreign country, west germany in this case. they create there own, joaquin phoenix plays such a guy, living off the wealth he makes from dodgy deals hes making on the side with his team of loyal followers, and with no war going on, ed harris colonal, maybe either to dumb to notice or letting things go by. its when higher authority played by scott glen turns up, and makes out whats happening from the get go, with a higher and more risky deal on the cards, and his romance with the colonals daughter will things get to deep for phoenix. a look at the u.s army as a bunch or no clue, doped up, or bored g.is, in a situation where is there is no war and nothing to do, not sheding a good light, and when released just after 911, suffered for it, a razor sharp script, and a well observed drama both at the time and situations involved, all actors, phoenix, glen, panquin, and ed harris stand up well, but also the minor roles, especially michael pena, some great scenes of great acting, and a centrepice involving a tank on rampage is a highlight, a cracking film showing obserdaty of war when theres no war

Dead Man's Shoes
by xGaryThis bleak tale of revenge set in a small English town sees Paddy Considine leaving the army and returning home to extract brutal revenge on a group of small time drug dealers who abused his retarded younger brother while he was away. This is an unusual revenge thriller as it often looks more like a slasher flick; Considine is obviously an unstable murderer who has been trained to kill and he systematically executes each of his victims in a very horror film style way. Except in this case his victims are a bunch of unsympathetic scum bags who you can't help feeling probably deserve their fate. In this way the film throws up many mixed emotions as you're never quite sure who you are supposed to be rooting for! But the real kick in the gut is provided by Shane Meadows; he directs very much like a documentary photographer cataloging the grim reality of working class small town life. The actors involved are ugly. They have bad hair and cheap clothes. In other words they look like REAL people, not Hollywood's glamorized, sanitized version of them. As such you feel you are right there in the thick of it, actually witnessing these gruesome events rather than just watching a piece of entertainment. It won't be to everyone's tastes as it's quite a tough movie to sit through because of its extremely grim subject matter, but ultimately it's a very powerful piece of work.

The Butcher Boy
by El HombreNeil Jordan's 1997 film The Butcher Boy has striking similarities to Truffaut's The 400 Blows as well as Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, though with much more satire if that's possible. Even if it's nowhere close to being as brilliant as those mentioned, Jordan's film is very good.
Possibly the most cheerful film ever made about abusive childhoods, alienation, sexual abuse, madness and murder and should be noted for the simple fact of being the first film in the renaissance of Irish cinema during the 1990s not to be centered around sectarian violence.
From the director of The Crying Game, The Good Thief and Breakfast On Pluto.

Things We Lost in the Fire
by EJBrilliant performance by Benicio Del Toro as an ex-attorney who becomes a heroin addict. David Duchovny portrays his friend who never turns his back on him.
After Duchovny's death in a random act of violence, Jerry(Benicio Del Toro) becomes friends with his friend's wife Audrey played by Halle Berry. Jerry fights his addiction which has destroyed everything that was once important to him as Audrey finds Jerry to be the only person to help her survive her loss. Her children and Jerry form a bond which keeps him on the level most of the time.
When things seem to be at their worst, the fight in each of these characters struggles to rise above the deepest fog and gloom.Hey, you should really see this!

Mamma Mia!
by KenDid I laugh? Yes
Did I enjoy myself? Yes
Is this huge a huge piece of shit? YES!
This film is a failure on almost every level. Camerawork, acting, singing, choreography, direction, writing and ESPECIALLY the editing were all astonishingly bad.
But yet, some how I found myself dancing in my chair. I came out with a smile on my face.
What can I say. It's this generations Xanadu
Also I would totally nail Christine BaranskiWhat can I say. It's this generations Xanadu

The Basketball Diaries
by scottdicaprio in a early role which makes it along side whats eating gilbert grape and this boys life as the films that showed the up and coming talent of the young actor, along with his buddies spending there time in newyork, and going to catholic school, but spending there time getting high, and getting into all sorts of trouble, its when his dealings with drugs and the effects of that, that will change his life around, decaprio getting loads of great scenes to chew on, playing a torchured lad, showing a full range of emotions, getting into the head of a drug addict well, from the first signs, and quick escalation into petty crime, and more. also fine support from mark warlberg as his best mate, the story which is based on a real life charactor, who as seen in film, wrote diarys of his life, is well told, with a real edgy feel, and a great example like requirem for a dream, on drug use in a young lads life

Le Petit Soldat (The Little Soldier)
by El HombreAn early Jean-Luc Godard film that was made on a shoestring budget about a young revolutionary, Bruno, living in Geneva who is fighting against French involvement in the war in Algeria, only to run into Veronica (Anna Karina).
Shot like a newsreel, much of the film is photographed with a hand-held camera, with sound post-synchronized. A moody, often violent film, complete with sequences of torture modeled after the actions of occupying French forces in Algeria. These scenes resulted in the movie being banned by the French government for some time.

Frozen River
by MichaelA gritty independant gem. FROZEN RIVER feels almost like a documentary, with it's shoe-string budget, HD shakey cam photography, and very believeable performances. A gripping story and lush snow-covered locales reminded me a little of Fargo, but there is no dark comedy, or comedy of any kind here! Expect to be saddened and a little depressed, and you may be truely surprised.
Melissa Leo gives easily one of the best performances this year. Lets see if she's remembered come Oscar time. Here's one worth looking for. A great first effort from director Courtney Hunt, featuring one of the year's best performances.

Funny Games (2008)
by TonyThis was by far,the most disturbing film I've seen in years..an unflinching documentation of a couple of "Leopold & Loeb"-like psychopaths humiliating, terrorizing, and then murdering their victims..the "rewind" scene really f_cks with the vigilante instinct in(presumably) all of us..I cheered, then almost put my fist through the screen.Since Alex DeLarge,I have not seen more loathsome characters on screen..there's no justice, just this inexorable,post-modern evil having its way..something very "clinical" about it(maybe it's those gloves).Sounds weird, but I don't know if I can even call it a movie..it's a flat enactment of nasty reality,so recommending it is tough. This ain't no popcorn movie. If you liked "In The Bedroom","A Clockwork Orange","Cul-De-Sac",then you can probably hack this.

Tarnation
by RobertA little too self-indulgent at times to be considered a "documentary", but all in all a very creative and moving look at life.
Once you let go and just go along for the ride...you are off on a journey into the psyche of a family in turmoil.
It's not always an enjoyable journey, but it is one in which (after being led through a gamut of emotions) you are ultimatley led back to the point of origin, which is love.
A great reminder of the fact that while we can not choose our families...we are (ultimatley) in control of just how much we allow them to adversely effect our lives as adults.
One of the tough questions that we all have to deal with at some point is: At what point do you let go of all of the negative family baggage (that we all carry to some extent) and decide to start living your own life and making decicions based on doing what is best (and most helathy) for you?
These are some of the hard choices in life and this film really makes you think about them.A very intersting and creative and touching look at "family" and life in general.
