5
Fight Club (1999,  R)

7
El Topo (1970,  Unrated)
El Topo
my favorite surreal film. Jodorowsky is a master...
8
Psycho (1960,  R)
Psycho
i should do a refresh on all the ratings i've done so far on those recent psychological thrillers, because compared to this classic masterpiece, they're just nothing! i mean, all the clichés you get to see in horror cinema today are here...and i got so weirdly surprised to see stuff (mainly psychological elements, like the light, camera work, and twists) that i got used to see in 2000's here on a film from almost 50 years ago!
9
Midnight Cowboy (1969,  R)
10
Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir) (2008,  R)
Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir)
animation taken to another level. absolutely speechless...
11
Nuit et Brouillard (Night and Fog) (1955,  Unrated)
Nuit et Brouillard (Night and Fog)
utterly horrendous. yet beautiful, and i mean not in a good way. art is never the imagery of what is good, but of what is beautiful.
i think everyone, but EVERYONE, now, and in the future, should see this documentary, and get disgusted, get horrified, turn the face away with some images, so that things like this do not happen EVER AGAIN.
12
Izgnanie (The Banishment) (2007,  Unrated)
13
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939,  Unrated)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
oh my! i've never been much into political movies, but now, geez, i was blown away by the narrative of this one. what a true masterpiece! what started like a very simple storyline, with this country fellow entering into the true important decisions world, the senate, and his first lessons about the american constitution, politics, and even the city life he wasn't used to, ended with a battle between him (and all that he believed in) and the big and corrupt politic machine. a struggle that left me without words, like an action film only with arguments.

"Either I'm dead right, or I'm crazy!"
14
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
15
Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
16
Amadeus (1984,  R)
Amadeus
the first true musical libertine, and the starter of a new musical era, and through it, a new world view. Romanticism had begun. one of the best bios i've seen. three cheers for Forman, and specially for the brilliantness of the cast.
17
The Straight Story (1999,  G)

22
Baraka (1993,  Unrated)
Baraka
Ron Fricke is a fuckin' cinematography genius!!! astonished, perplexed, shocked, almost crying my soul out, that's how i was like the whole movie. human condition, culture, traditions, beliefs, society, nature, everything is fabulosily shown in this doc. the soundtrack is unbelievable, put perfectly in the key moments. unfortunatly, 5 stars is the maximum we can give for perfection.
23
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003,  R)
24
Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
25
Into the Wild (2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Everytime I think about this movie makes me wanna try to do what Mccandless did, just for the experience, and to enjoy life in an opposite way to everyone else in this society. I've read the book aswel, unfortunatly after the movie (wich I bet most of the people did), and the way Penn puts up things according to the book its just fantastic.
26
Noi (2003,  PG-13)

Exiles (Exils) (2004,  Unrated)
Exiles (Exils)
one of the best trip movies I have seen, I must say. tony gatlif brought us a trip inside spanish minorities/immigrants and north africa's roots, in a very musical hippie-kind way. the freedom, the passion... and the trance session made my head blow!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006,  R)
71
Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera) (1929,  Unrated)
Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera)
beautiful
72
Dancer in the Dark (2000,  R)
Dancer in the Dark
I needed to watch it a second time to fully enjoy what a great work it is. amazing camera work while the musical parts, and bjork's voice is divine!
73
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948,  Unrated)
74
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
75
Thesis (Tesis) (1996,  R)
76
His Girl Friday (1940,  Unrated)
His Girl Friday
hilarious!
77
Stealing Beauty (1996,  R)
Stealing Beauty
a very sensual film, not only because of Liv Tyler's character, but also because of the shots, the landscapes, the lines, the scenes.
the story is about the purity of virginity, and all the effects it brings to the person, and the others around: lust, inspiration, jealousies, compassion, etc.
In general, a great masterpiece by Bertollucci.
78
Beetle Juice (Beetlejuice) (1988,  PG)
Beetle Juice (Beetlejuice)
never thought Keaton could pull up this kind of brilliant and funny acting. Burton, once again, didn't let me down, though this was one of his oldies, he can be so damn creative! the plot is both dark and funny, the characters have their own personality and goals, the extra characters (the ones in the Limbo) cracked me up, and the scenarios were simple but scary.
79
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance (1983,  Unrated)
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance
i seem to be getting more and more fond of this kind of filmmaking. this first part of the qatsi trilogy was, absolutly, beyond my expectations. not that it brought something new to me, since i've seen Chronos and Baraka before this, but somehow it clicked another light on me. we're nothing more than a mechanical society.
80
Powaqqatsi (1988,  G)
Powaqqatsi
the second part of the qatsi trilogy was not as good as Koyaanisqatsi (though i rate them equal), but still very different. a journey into developing countries and the struggle of their people for survival. they may be economicaly poor, but they're very rich in spirituality.
81
Zeitgeist: The Movie (2007,  Unrated)
Zeitgeist: The Movie
terribly factual! i mean, i already had the feeling that there was something wrong already in this mad world, and now the proof arrived.. we could all think this was all invented, that its another conspiracy theory, but what it is amazing is that everything clicks together, our suspicions with their theories... plus, if it was another conspiracy theory (for their profit of course) why do they give away the doc free for download, at their website?
82
Yojimbo (1961,  Unrated)
83
Zeitgeist: Addendum (2008,  Unrated)
Zeitgeist: Addendum
Think about our today's society, our financial system, our corrupt politicians, our beliefs, our use of resources, but mainly, think about we as humanity. this documentary is not suppose to brain wash people, its not suppose to create another religion, with a messiah or such, it is supposed to make you THINK!
84
Metropolis (1927,  Unrated)
85
Roman Holiday (1953,  Unrated)
86
Barton Fink (1991,  R)
Barton Fink
"You're a sick fuck, Fink."

so far, the best film made by the Coen brothers. and the funny thing is, i absolutely didn't get it... there's a thing i completely adore in their films, they don't use clichés. when you're thinking you're about to unravel something, by your own experience in watching films, you get completely surprised moments after, because what happens is really unexpected, and sometimes out of context, not falling out of the story though, and thats so f*cking brilliant, in my opinion.
87
Eraserhead (1977,  Unrated)
Eraserhead
i don't know what to think or say about this film, i don't know if i should consider it as one of the most marvelous surrealistic masterpiece i've seen, or if i should consider it as nonsense, disgusting, disturbing, weird and confusing piece of garbage and give it half a star.

well i think i'll go for the first option, since i already know Lynch's style and work, and i know he's a puzzling director, and by that, everything has a meaning.
i oughta see this again, and again, and again... the many times i may need, to solve the puzzle.
88
Following (1999,  R)
Following
simple, mindblowing and effective, this is probably the best way to describe this first work by Nolan.
89
Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991,  R)
Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
awesome view into the "making of" of one of the best films ever made, Apocalypse Now, and the struggle of Coppola to finish it, due to all the setbacks..
90
The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde inseglet) (1957,  Unrated)
91
Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows) (1959,  Unrated)
Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows)
very good. even though i still prefer Hiroshima Mon Amour as one of the French Wave firestarters, 400 Blows was still marvelous... and yea, like some say, the last scene was quite something.
92
Entr'acte (1924,  Unrated)
Entr'acte
shown in between the two parts of Picabia's surrealism firestarter, ballet Relâche, this Entr'acte is one hell of a short film. no wonder the night, at the end of this "ballet", ended in conflicts between the artists and the crowd. they just weren't ready for this kind of "pushing the boundaries"...
93
Gone With the Wind (1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
call it overrated, call it pretentious, call it whatever you may want to, but what is remarkable is that i could stand the whole 3h30 length of the film, through out the night, without blinking the eyes... a classic alright.
94
The Edukators (Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei) (2005,  R)
95
Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (1970,  R)
Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music
absolutely brilliant! not just the live footage, turned into documentary, of the spectacle, but the festival itself. what a great thing. great times. great music. great ideas. now that was pure living. too bad the remakes and copies never reached the grandiosity of this original Woodstock festival...

"Far out, man..."
96
Gomorrah (Gomorra) (2008,  Unrated)
Gomorrah (Gomorra)
really intense and cruel. great for those who enjoyed City of God or La Haine, where the rules of the street are, most of the time, the rules of the gun.
what is really shocking in this Gomorrah is to think that mobs like this, mobs this cruel and brutal, exist not only in those far away places we get to see on the news every now and then, such as the Rio's slums, to name an example, but also in the middle of this so-called Modern Europe.
97
It's All Gone Pete Tong (2004,  R)
It's All Gone Pete Tong
great stuff.
98
Crna macka, beli macor (Black Cat, White Cat) (1999,  R)
Crna macka, beli macor (Black Cat, White Cat)
ah man, this was brilliant! this Kusturica is one crazy fellow. who else makes people laugh 'till it hurts with all the nonsense mixed together?

Maradona!
99
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) (1988,  R)
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso)
i've been for quite a while trying to watch this, now i finally did it, and i'm no way disapointed. its a really beautiful tribute to cinema, and to all the emotions and joy it produces in everyone who loves it.
100
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men) (1957,  Unrated)
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men)
this is so much better than any action film! it was brilliant. plus you never get to see anything besides 12 guys arguing inside a sealed room. and, for that, the camera work, the angles, the script... were just too good.
101
Unforgiven (1992,  R)
Unforgiven
i admit i'm not really of a western expert, and most of the ones i did see were pretty recent compared to the great westerns era of the 50's and 60's, but i surely have to say, that of those recent ones, this is probably the best one.
102
Drowning by Numbers (1988,  R)
103
The Great Escape (1963,  Unrated)
The Great Escape
what a superb film. it lasts almost 3 hours but thats hardly noticeable. and Steve McQueen is the man!
104
Funny Games (1998,  Unrated)
Funny Games
just fantastic! i'm absolutely speechless.
105
Velvet Goldmine (1998,  R)
Velvet Goldmine
a false, yet brilliant sum up of the Glam Rock era and the sexual liberation that it brought, with fantastic alegories to Bowie, Iggy or Bolan.
106
Frankenweenie (1992,  PG)
Frankenweenie
a funny and charming alegory to Frankenstein. and for those who are acquainted to its story and its sequels, you'll surely end up with a smile.
107
The World of Stainboy (2000,  Unrated)
The World of Stainboy
weird fellow this stain boy. its only one more proof of Burton's creativity and here are some more examples - http://homepage.eircom.net/~sebulbac/burton/home.html
108
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
this first Star Wars (fourth in the series) is just one hell of a sci-fi. i find it better than any Alien, Blade Runner, or any sci-fi of this era, just because it is far more complete, and it is a brilliant depiction of what could be the future, or the long time gone past, like it is said in the beggining of each SW. its almost flawless and with the so many different, and interesting, characters, planets, starships, its no wonder it began a nerd mass histeria to know the best of each of them. and i add, if i'm a nerd because i loved this, then i proudly am.

"The Force will be with you... always."
109
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Brilliant as a continuation for the IV. the ending fight between Vader and Luke is simply astonishing, and so it is the revealing secrets it brings. the melodrama surrounding SW starts after this moment...
110
Central do Brasil (Central Station) (1998,  R)
Central do Brasil (Central Station)
another brazilian favorite. side by side with City of God.
111
Suspiria (1977,  R)
Suspiria
i really can't imagine the fright of the audiences when they went to see this for the first time, at the cinema. yes, its that scary. great atmosphere, awesome gore, briliant cinematography. highly recomendable for any true horror fan.
112
The Graduate (1967,  PG)
The Graduate
Classic. Dustin Hoffman and Bancroft are a must.
113
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951,  PG)
114
Entre les Murs (The Class) (2008,  PG-13)
115
Serpico (1973,  R)
Serpico
if there was a film where Al Pacino proved he was nothing less than a briliant actor, that film was Serpico. forget the first Godfather. he was good there yes, but he shares the protagonism with several other brilliant actors. he should have retired by the turn of the millennium, and leave aside all the crappy Recruits, 88 Minutes, Righteous Kills, and etc...
116
Dog Day Afternoon (1975,  R)
Dog Day Afternoon
its amazing how a simple depiction of a bank robbery, can turn out to be so damn brilliant in the hands of Lumet and Pacino.
117
Network (1976,  R)
118
Mulholland Drive (2001,  R)
119
Groundhog Day (1993,  PG)
120
Vixen! (1968,  R)
Vixen!
this cult b-movie its brilliant for its simplicity and erotism. Russ Meyer already had enchanted me with his personal view of women on Faster Pussycar Kill Kill, but this Vixen, although with a less solid story, its quite funnier. and Erica Gavin is fantastic. a film recommended for any b-movie fan.
121
The Breakfast Club (1985,  R)
The Breakfast Club
a fantastic and rather creative coming-of-age tale, captivating until the very last minute. possibly my fave of the genre.
122
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986,  PG)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
I was somewhat suspicious on this film but I was surprised it turned out to be really good. Its funny, its clever, and its probably the only worthy film in Broderick's entire career.
123
American Graffiti (1973,  PG)
124
Seven Up! (7 Up!) (1964,  Unrated)
Seven Up! (7 Up!)
first of all, this five star rating is a general rating to the whole series, aswel as the review. secondly, its a magnificent study, more than anything else. more than the label of documentary or tv show. I saw the whole series, from when the subjects were still children, until they're 49, and I must say, its so damn interesting to see and reflect on how people, in general, evolve, wether mentally or physically. Its also briliant because it provides a comparison basis to the viewers, as it did for me. Its no problem to be 7 and say you want to be an astronaut and prefer to play instead of thinking about girls, its no problem to be 21 and don't have a clue of what to do in the future. these are just some examples of some things that are all part of life and growing up, and this doc proves that quite well.
125
North by Northwest (1959,  Unrated)
126
Jacob's Ladder (1990,  R)
Jacob's Ladder
brilliant.
127
Le Dernier Combat (The Last Battle) (The Last Combat) (1983,  Unrated)
128
Poltergeist (1982,  PG)
Poltergeist
horror classic. outstanding special effects.
129
Splendor in the Grass (1961,  Unrated)
Splendor in the Grass
" What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind..."
130
Singin' in the Rain (1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
truly a remarkable film. and as much people say they don't like musicals, me included, they always end up admiring films like these.
131
Nanook of the North (1922,  Unrated)
Nanook of the North
Undeniable is its importance to film industry history, even if being considered a faux documentary. Flaherty wanted a portrayal of the true Inuit ancestors in the cold arctic, so he fooled the audiences to accomplish that, by adding a bit of staging. The result is in sight. An unscrupulous depiction of a now lost kind of living.
132
Caligola (Caligula) (Edited Version) (1979,  R)
Caligola (Caligula) (Edited Version)
Caligula is one hell of a porn film, above any other label. Of course orgies were a common thing in ancient Rome, and in alot more civilizations by then, and so there's absolutely no reason to produce any other, far from the truth, prudish depiction of the Roman living like Hollywood got people used to. And yes, the added sex scenes are a bit too excessive, too extravagant and too perverse, and there's controversy on that, but then wouldn't be a real portrayal of the history, specially on Caligula's reign.
133
Vertigo (1958,  PG)
134
Hype! (1996,  Unrated)
Hype!
Its fantastic how the grunge scene started out in a almost musically lost city, Seattle, at least for the music enthusiasts, and ended becoming one of the most influential music scenes in the world, in the 90's, gathering comparisons to the London scene in the 60's, or the New York scene in the 70's. As for me, being a really big fan of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, I really had the need to watch this documentary, since it brings an in-depth view on grunge origins and background, aswell as the consequences of its separation from the underground scene.

I just ordered "City of God" from Netflix and I need to watch "Eraserhead". You should watch "Another Day in Paradise" (1995), since you like "Requiem For a Dream". You should also watch "Stay" (2005), if you haven't already. Have you seen "Murder By Numb3rs"? It reminded me of "Funny Games", one of the same guys and Ryan Gosling is my fave. "Funny Games" got to me, I know that's what they were going for, but d@mn about the boy... and dog. I didn't know there was a 1997 version? Weird they'd remake it so soon.
