I guess I should get this out of the way but I'm a massive film nerd. I love everything about it. From watching films, talking about films, studying films and even making films ("I proudly use my camcorder until I hit it big"). So why do I love movies so much? Trying to say this in the least pretentious way possible but because I think a great film can affect a someone's life in such a profound way. I know they have with mine. Films have helped shape the way I look at my life. (Ok maybe I do need a life but f*ck you this is my profile and I'll write what I want) So if I do b*tch about how much Pearl Harbor sucks or become a pain in the ass asking you to give a little film a chance just remember I do it cause I care.

Signs
PG-13
I'll level with those reading my reviews that with the exception of Unbreakable, I've never been a fan of M. Night Shaymalan. Don't get me wrong the guy clearly knows how to work a camera and I respect the fact that he's one of the few hollywood filmmakers who tries something different. The problem comes down to 2 things 1. Never fully develops his ideas. 2. Someone should tell M. Night that the audience can handle a movie that doesn't have a twist at the end. Signs suffers from both of these problems. Now there are some good moments in Signs particularly the scenes with Joaquin Phoenix and the kids. In fact this would have been a 3.5 film if it weren't for one thing. The "twist" that we expect from Shyamalan as also been like doing on a date with a girl and everything is going great until the idiot tries the grab her chest henceforth ruining the night. That's what the last half an hour of Signs is like ruining what would have otherwise been a solid if not flawed suspense film.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
PG
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is for the record an improvement over the first film. I still can't understand what the bloody appeal of these movies are?
Note I've never been a fan of the Narnia books but I can admit there is some fun here. The special effects are terrific, so is the voice over work of Liam Neeson and Eddie Izzard plus Peter Dinklage (Though the Prince really needed to work on that accent.) There are also some impressive battle scenes.
So why only 2.5 stars? We get all of that stuff from Lord of The Rings and Prince Caspian never really tops anything that Jackson did with story and at 2.5 hours this films becomes difficult to sit through in it's last 45 minutes.
It's getting better and hopefully Narnia can pull a Prisoner of Azkaban by the third movie (Which is a good thing.) but at the moment Disney still needs better screen writers for these films.
The Great Debaters
PG-13
Somewhere in The Great Debaters there's the rare movie that tells a feel good movie without all the crap attached to it. Sadly there isn't enough of those moments and it becomes another well acted but cliched inspirational film.
None of the blame however shouldn't go to director Denzel Washington this being his 2nd try as a director shows that he has talent (His scenes with him and the reliable Forest Whitaker and the KKK scene is nothing short of amazing.) Plus he knows how to work with actors show cased in the young cast but where The Great Debaters ultimately fails is the screenplay. For the fact that for a movie about speaking it up The Great Debaters doesn't have anything new or insightful to say.
Redbelt
R
Simply put David Mamet's best film since the Spanish Prisoner, Redbelt has everything we want from a writer and director like Mamet strong acting, well written dialogue and compelling story.
First off you have to give Redbelt credit for two things a. Someone finally gave Chiwetel Ejiofor the lead in a movie like he deserves b. The first time I liked Tim Allen and he isn't a space man. The fight scenes are also pretty great (Never though I would write this about a Mamet film.)
The only thing that I had a problem with was the ending kind of fell flat but this is still great entertainment worthy of your time after Iron Man if only for Ejiofor's performance.
Happy Gilmore
PG-13
Acam Sandler at his funniest. I have to admit I'm kind of ashamed to praise this film. It's Adam Sandler's low class, mentally unstable jokes he's done his entire career. At could just be Bob Barker kicking Sandler's ass (Which is a pretty great moment to watch) or that maybe Sandler can be a funny guy at times? (Ok now I'm crazy.) but watch it for what it's worth. A fun 2 hours.
King Kong (1933)
Unrated
Seeing the first King Kong movie for the first time I can't help but feel like there should have been more to it. Don't get me wrong it's a fun movie and the empire state building is still a classic scene but while beauty killed the beast, time has killed how effective a movie King Kong is. Yes I know it's 1933 and all but with the giant monkey not being nearly as cool now as it was at the time you see all the writing and acting problems King Kong has. Once again still a fun movie but as far as style and substance goes Peter Jackson's King Kong walks all over this version.

There Will Be Blood
R
I have yet to see a film that is this close to perfection, that it's taken me 2 days after seeing the film before I could write a proper review. While my friend told me that I had to think how great it would be multiple that by a million then multiple it again by a million and it's about as close as you can get to this masterpiece. He's a 100% right. I'll start by stating the obvious Daniel Day-Lewis is a God among actors. He's not just acting like Daniel Plalnview he IS Daniel Plainview. He's just flat out scary as hell (He makes Anton Chuirgugh look like George Bailey) but also makes us understand why he does what he does. In a year of great performances Day-Lewis is hands down the most deserving of the best actor oscar. Now that shouldn't be a surprise to any film lovers but what is surprising is that the entire cast is at Day Lewis' level. Paul Dano proves he's one of the future greats with an equally dark and scary performance and the newcomer Dillon Freasier gives just as strong a performance as Day-Lewis (That says a lot since he plays his 8 year old son H.W Plainview.). It's the best performance by a young actor I've seen. P.T Anderson oh dear God I can't pit into words how f*cking brilliant you are. I expected to love this film but never did I think you would top my list of favorite films. (Yes better then Godfather, Raging Bull and Do The Right Thing.) With it great camera work, set design, score (Radio Head's Johnny Green can do no wrong) screenplay, acting and direction (I couldn't even keep my eyes off it during the first 20 minutes where no one talked!). All that's left to say is thank God in a year of Norbit and Wild Hogs we have you.

The Godfather
R
At first I was wondering if there was really a point of writing another review for this masterpiece because what can I really add to this film's universal praise. #1 on IMDB, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and #2 of the AFI's greatest films of all time list. So just quite simply it's a masterpiece. There's no other way to put it and a million careers own a great amount to Francis Ford Coppola.
4.
Do the Right Thing
R
What else can I saw about this film no else has said about this movie. Not only is it Spike Lee's best work but his most thought provoking. This movie says so much about the issue of racism. Why does this film manage to hit the mark where so many films failed? Because Hollywood never got anywhere near it. It's straight to the point and hard hitting. A must see movie that will even make Kramer think about the issue.
5.
Edward Scissorhands
PG-13
After watching this wonderful movie again and by questioned again for the film being in my top 10 of all times. Look I'm shamelessly in love with Tim Burton's movies and I just can't think of a better example then Edward Scissorhands to explain why I love his movies. I guess I should start by mentioning Johnny Depp in what is so far his best acting to date and he doesn't even talk that much in the film. Instead we have to see all the longing and pain in the way Ed moves, looks at people even how he breaths. That being said Depp is perfect in the role. He provides every bit of warmth and heartbreak in the role. The film itself has some of the most breathtaking scenes every displayed on film and is just one of the best written characters of all time. This isn't for everyone but if you can't relate to Burton's masterpiece about being an outsider at least once you have a heart of stone.

Schindler's List
R
The best movie I never want to see again. So heart breaking and directed so brilliantly and a very strong cast. Makes Schindler's List a movie we all should see.

Numb
by LisaThe quality of this film really surprised me. It's a sweet film that really touches you. I feel this was completely down the, lets face it, excellent performance from Matthew Perry. He really surprised me. I didn't think he was capable of pulling off a role like this. There was such depth to his character and he really made the performance his own. By the end of the film it was hard to imagine the character being played by anyone else. The plot was simple and although it is classed as a romantic comedy, I really feel that that paints the wrong picture of this film. Although it does have funny moments I wouldn't call it a comedy at all. More of a psychological drama. You see Perry's character become more and more unhinged as he desperately tries to keep his life together. His performance really is what makes the film and it is definatly worth checking out purely for his performance.

Dances With Wolves
by Graham
Dances with Wolves (1990)
So what's it about? Lt. John Dunbar, exiled to a remote western Civil War outpost, befriends wolves and Indians, making him an intolerable aberration in the military.
My thoughts on the movie? I don't believe that there is or ever will be a "Perfect film" because everyone has different tastes and there will never be a film that everyone loves however there can be films that a ideally suited to certain individuals tastes and therefore achieves perfection for them individuals. Dances With Wolves is the film that is most ideally suited to my tastes therefore I see it as the perfect movie to me and it doesn't matter if other people hate it or just thought it was average because to me it was ideal. I think this movie could become the best movie I have ever seen after I have watched it again because I have only seen it once so far so I think it would be unfair to my favourite movie of all time because I have seen that like five times. I made sure that I seen the 4 hour extended version of this movie and to be honest I really couldn't see how it could have been any shorter than that because there was not one thing I would take out of the movie. The acting was superb and the cinematography was absolutely stunning with some of the scenery at times being completely breathtaking in what was an astonishing directorial achievement from Kevin Costner. I would say Dances With Wolves is probably the most complete movie I have ever scene and there aren't really any words that I could use that would sum up how great this movie was so all I will say is that it is quite simply in the true sense of the word a Masterpiece.
Most memorable quote:"I was just thinking that of all the trails in this life there is one that matters most. It is the trail of a true human being. I think you are on this trail and it is good to see."

by scott2 early roles from catherin zeta jones, and a english acented ewen mcgregor in a supporting role, not a original film but all performances are good especially these two and showing there talent, but story, about raising money to keep a surfer cafe open in cornwall is engageing enough, with some nice british humour, and zeta jones is pretty hot here too, which helps

Doomsday
by LisaI expected a little more from this film because the plot sounded rather impressive, but it really didn't live up. I also loved that they chose Scotland as the infected country. The odd thing was that I really didn't see much of a difference to a night out in Glasgow and some of the scenes in this film. It was remarkably similar. Rhona Mitra fitted the character well and did a good job as the leading lady. I loved Bob Hoskins character a lot for some reason. He wasn't in it an awful lot but he was good when he did have a scene. I felt the cannibal scenes weren't exactly necessary. The car chase at the end was pretty poor considering it was the final clash. It could have been a lot better. I liked that they didn't do the usual thing of people infected with virus become living dead. It was more of an anarchy thing that gave a much fresher look on the concept. Overall not bad. Very similar to Resident Evil without the zombies. If you like that kind of film then you're bound to like this as well.

Two Hands
by LisaMy main reason for seeking this film out was that it had Heath Ledger in it. After him passing away I thought it important to see all of his movies. However, the more of them I see, the more I realise just how tragic his passing was. The more of his films I watch the more I realise just how talented he was. This film is no different. It's a nice little, low budget Australian film that really shows that you don't need a whole lot of money to make an impressive film. There is nothing big about it at all but it really was very good. Excluding Ledger's excellent performance it was brilliant. The rest of the cast, although completely unknown to me, were actually very good. The plot was strong, without being over complicated. They kept things simple and it worked very well. The dead brother narration was slightly unnecessary but if you ignore that it was good. Definatly a worth see film for two very good reasons.

Starter for Ten
by BrianI guess I'm one of those people who likes James McAvoy as an acvtor, and so I wanted to see this for him, and because it was set in the 80s and I was feeling nostalgic. ;)
While it's not amazingly good, it's still funny and accurate to the time period. Still, probably not right for anyone who isn;t old enough to rember the flavor of the 80s, might think it was campy and unrelaistic.
But it worked for me.
The themes aren;t groundbreaking, but they aren't meant to be. It's a bit slow in the beginning, but quickly gets going.
Give it a chance.Hey, you should really see this!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
by Vmedia Berkeley Ca. UPDATE - I SAW THIS A SECOND TIME WITH A BETTER ENDING AND I HAVE UPPED MY GAME FOR THIS NEW INDI 2008 SKULL Flick.
The Ending in the new cut i saw today uses a non Hollywood ending that I truly hope Steven keeps it the final cut you see next weekend.
and no he doesn't die? or um? Lets just say this new ending does not follow the reagan formula - and for that reason I have upped the star factor.
I saw Shia Labeouf last sat night at the dress for SNL - and he told us there would be this secret screening that night. Of course we all ran the screeing on 40th street and saw the bone.
With the franchise and Spielberg not shying away from the original subtext of the franchise (the Reagan conquest) - Indi and his boy make for a fun play on the same metaphor this time around.
Dr. Jack Wheeler is a legend. he was the inspiration for the famed movie character.
While Jack has often been called a "real life Indiana Jones" and is part of the mix of historical figures Stephen Spielberg used (along with his own imagination) to create his fictional hero -- "Jones" is cartoon fiction and Wheeler is real.
In the 1980s he conducted a series of extensive visits to anti-Soviet guerrilla insurgencies in Nicaragua, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Laos, and Afghanistan, and to democracy movements in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, becoming an unofficial liaison between them and the Reagan White House. Based on his experiences with anti-Soviet insurgencies, he developed the strategy for dismantling the Soviet Empire adopted by the White House known as the "Reagan Doctrine. " It worked.
Dr. Jack Wheeler is virtually immeasurable as the architect of the Reagan Doctrine, he is one of the handful of men most responsible for the defeat of the Soviet Empire in the 1980s. He served his country as an "unofficial" liaison between the Reagan White House and anti-Soviet insurgents, pro-democracy activists and freedom fighters around the world, in Nicaragua, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, throughout Eastern Europe and in the Soviet Union itself.
With this in mind this new romp with Indi and the kid sticks to that path.
'Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it, have never known it again." says Ronald Reagan
This Reagan Romp is fun - thick with 2008 Republican pride and will take the box office for the next 3 weekends.
Bye George Bush -
hello Mr McCain

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
by BrianIn general, the fantasy film genre isn't for me, but Mike wanted to see it, and I was game enough.
I was pleasantly surprised; it was better than the first, I thought by a mile, and the pacing was generally good.
A word to parents with young children: the film is really very violent with prolonged fighting scenes, etc. May not be appropriate for some kids.
Good, but I'm waiting for the Crystal Skull :)Hey, you should really see this!

A King in New York
by FabioWe can say this is a little bit autobiographical movie.
Chaplin is setting up his own troubles with the anti-American activities commission on the screen, and that is quite funny though particularly dramatic.
It contains some very pungent observations on the American way of life and American society of that period.
And I think that most of the americans will not apprecciate it.
Chaplin plays King Shahdov, a deposed monarch who flees to America in the hopes of selling his plans for a peaceful, nuclear-based society, which never happens. And during his stay he meets several people who give life to funny and touching moments.Hey, you should really see this!
