Being given the task to follow-up one of the great horror movies of the past couple decades was no small demand. Some of the ideas that worked well in the first film are again on display in the sequel, including eerie shots of deserted sections inside London. That said, "28 Weeks Later" is more along the lines of the standard zombie picture than its predecessor. Gone are any of the symbolism and underlying social commentary that allowed the first film to transcend the familiar limits of this genre. Instead this movie is filled with loud, frenzied action and an unending string of pursuits, with the newly infected giving chase. The first film was largely concerned with how the uninfected characters deal with the startlingly abrupt changes occurring around them. By contrast, one of the main characters in this film spends a sizable portion of the movie as one of the infected. Often alternating between sequences that are either excitingly drawn or downright silly, I judge this to be a decent sequel that propels the series along without diminishing my overall interest.
