Casablanca
Unrated
Casablanca is one of the few movies where you'll watch them and say what a beautiful and great story it tells. The main thing in casablanca is the amazing screenplay which is really inspiering and amazingly written. It tells a story of love and eception and sacrifice. And the road the actions follows was really excellent and well done. As for Humphrey Bogart, he was phenomenal. He gave what i say the greatest performence ever. I was stupified by the way he played his character with this confident look in his eyes.
2.
All About Eve
Unrated
Step away evil plastics, there's a new bitch in town and her name is Eve Harrington. I haven't had so much fun while watching a movie in a really long time as much as i had while watching All About eve. I know this movie won't be appreciated by everyone coz it flows above regular movie making to attend a high level of perfectness and excellency in every possible way. And it must have one of the besst dialogues ever. The greatness of this movie is how it depends on the dialogue between the characters where every word said by each and every one of them opens a door leading to another side of their personalities which really gets you more and more interested into knowing about them and just thrilled to watch the rest of the movie. Many will say it's boring but those who understand the true essense of movie writing will appreciate the great effort put into it. As for the story. I have never seen a movie about betrayal put together like this one. every character is dirty in its own way and although it gets to such a low level of inhumanity you can't but glory its intelligence. And at the end of the movie you can't help but have this grin on your face because of the ironic turn the story takes. As for the acting, watching Bette Daviz was such an inspiration which makes your heart leap from its place because of the true power she gave in her performance. And i liked what Celeste Holm did too. But i wasn'y quite sure about Anne Baxter since her performance was very amateur and childish and not up to the greatness of her character. She was the only weak point in this amazing movie which i call one of my all time favourites.
3.
Psycho
R
Alfred Hitchcock is clearly the greatest director ever! and this movie is his greatest work where he mixed horror, drama and psychoclogical problems to bring in the end a frightenening masterpeice! Although the movie starts a bit slow at first but have patience coz whats waiting is maybe one of the scariest must spoociest rides ever. You won't jump or scream but the hair on the back of your neck will always be up because of the great performence and frightening performence of Anthony perkins. I nearly had a heart attack looking at him and at the look in his eyes at the finale. I can;t understand how he wasn't even nominated for best actor. And at the end the thanks all goes to to the master of horror and thrill Alfred hitchcock who will always be a legend and this work is his best and will never be forgotten in the next generations (i will make sure it wont LOL)
4.
Gone With the Wind
G
Known to be THE timeless classic that everyone heard about, Gone With the Wind deserves its name as one as the greatest movies of all time.I know it's quite scary watching a four hours long movie, but the beauty of this movie is within every detail brought to life during the movie. Every expression on the face of the actors took its time to be shown in the most perfect way. And of course Victor Fleming gave a wonderful work as a director brining the true beauty of that time and the true horror of the war facing it. Hats off for Fleming. But for me the movie wouldn't have been the same without Viven Leigh's genius portrayal of Scarlett O'hara which will always be one of my favourite performance. I will always remember every expression on her face and every move she made coz they were made from her heart and soul.
5.
The Wizard of Oz
G
Following the yellow brick road may be the best trip you will ever have in this colourfull movie filled with great songs and a great performance by Judie Garland. She was young but managed to give a convincing performence. but the mvie is all about its amazing screenplay. Which talks about the hearts desires and that you have all you want but you should know how to discover it. The movie is very entertaining and inspiring and it reveals the meaning of true friendship and after watching it you'll go with a big heart, a smart brian and an invincible courage to face everything in life.

Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.)
Unrated
Billy Wilder is really climbing the ladder to becoming one of my favourite directors. I know the technical work was amazing, i know the screenplay is genius and i know that the acting was wnderful. But it was Wilder's work that made this movie the timeless classic it is. And i really appreciate his intellignece coz he knew how to capture the viewers in the two most important parts of any movie: the opening and the end scene. I must say, the opening scene must be one of the best ever, we see the cars driving through and how we feel we're watching a police archive was a very brilliant idea. And at the end with the freeky psychotic melodramatic danse of the lead actress leading her way down the stairs and looking at the camera must be one of the most psychotic most memoroibale scenes ever. The movie shows how Hollywood isn't so glamorous after all and how even the most greatest actors will be thrown away coz they don't follow the current flow. It shows how painful it is to be at the top and then scroll down and be forgotten. And it shows the worst case scenario. We see how this actress who was miserable found happyness in this young writer but at the same time ehr happyness caused him misery. And Billy Wilder brilliantly showed every spec of lonelyness she was feeling. And one of the most sad scenes in the movie was the new year's scene. We see her happy although she's alone, she's dancing thinking that this young man loves her. It's really sad when a person puts himself in her point of view. And yet again this movie wouldn't have been the same of course if it wasn't for Gloria Swanson's amazing job. The look in her eyes and the way she expressed her emotions with her face was really inspiering. And i believe this the kind of roles that marks one's career. And William Holden was great too but she just stole all the lights.

Camp Out
by BrianI wanted to see this documentary because its subject are so different from. Ten campers trying to reconcile their Christian faith and their homosexuality.
I never had that problem because religion isn't a big part of my life at all, but it was interesting to see, and would be good viewing for gay teens dealing with the same issues.Maybe for you, maybe not for you but a fairly well done documentary. You may know people that you could tell them about this.

Monsieur Verdoux
by Fabio"HENRI VERDOUX: Wars, conflict - it's all business. One murder makes a villain; millions, a hero. Numbers sanctify, my good fellow! "
"PRIEST: May the Lord have mercy on your soul.
HENRI VERDOUX: Why not? After all, it belongs to Him."
A great Chaplin's black comedy or as the "movie" says "A comedy of murders".
This is one of Chaplinīs best sound films.
Itīs the story of a fired bank clerk who goes into business for himself, marrying and murdering rich women for their money that then he uses for his family, the "real" wife and the son.
His directing is superb, the script is wonderful (born from the mind of Orson Welles) and the acting is superb, one of his best performance.
This is not like others chaplin's movies so don't watch it you don't like black comedies.
This movie has remembered me the movie "keeping mum" directed by Niall Johnson with Rowan Atkinson,so if you liked "monsieur verdoux" give a look also at "keeping mum"Hey, you should really see this!

China Seas
by Veronique"china seas" is directed by tay garnett who also helms the classic noir "the postman always rings twice"...it has every gable/harlow formulic elements adopted from their former collaboration "red dust": oriental background, racist insinuation, sexist inequality, man's madonna complex with sensual blonde and prim brunette, luscious harlow swoons over reluctant gable whose heart is taken by the demure brown-haired lady, then eventually harlow captures gable back with a twist.
clark gable is gallant captain alan gaskell who discards aside his former flame ,showgirl chinadoll (harlow) with a foul humor, while he re-encounters his long-lost crush for years, refined British dame sybil (rosalind russel). chinadoll attempts to entince gaskell's attention again while she finds him enamour of his english girlfriend who he plans to marry. harlow pulls it off clumsily by insinuating gable's crude disdemeanors at the past on the dinner table, growling about her wretched heart in his cabin, making excuses to approach him by putting her cigarettes in his drawer. she tries everything she could but gaskell still dismisses her as obnoxious, a desperate girl who could hook up with any sailor. while rosalind russuel behaves tastefully as a obedient love interest who withdraws wisely at their confrontation. as harlow groans "i ain't like that english dame who gets brought up to say the right thing, i speak whatever inside my mind"
meanwhile wallace beery is jamesey, chinadoll's courting admirer who schemes to backstab captain gaskell with chinese piracy then captures chinadoll as his own since she has been frequently demeaned by gaskell. infuriated by gaskell's insult when she sneaks to his cabin to warn him, chinadoll steals the key of arsenils for jamesey. then the ship gets robbed for the first time after the trainwreck of typhoon. gaskell's foot also gets swayed tightly by oriental turturer. the villain commits suicide while the blonde bashes out her agony of love as treason confession "yes! i steal your key and give it to jamesey, i would have stood backward back with you, figure it out yourself why i don't, you teach me something i have never known about myself, when a woman can love a man right down her fingertips, she could hate him the same way as well...go call your cop, if you could ditch it out then i could take it!!!!"...then the fabulous line of wallace beery in his last breath would be "loving you is the only decent thing i have ever done in my whole life, even it's obviously a mistake."
"china seas" is more clever than "red dust"..."red dust" is more of gable's concession to the bourgeois values by giving mary astor away to gratify her husband's dreams of marital happiness, and harlow is more like a trophy of solace, a substitute of ease, a woman closer to his proteriat upbringing would make a better spouse as he shamelessly cheers "we're all rotten people in this stinky country". additionally astor's role seems like a pretentious closet bitch who likes to pose goody-goody, and that role has been brought back to life by grace kelly again in its remake "mogaboo"
but "china seas" is a recuperated love of pathos, it is harlow's ignited hatred which hunts gable back as avengeful betrayl is somehow an intensified way to express affections. when he utters sympathetically "you hard-headed crazy little fool", he's hers. so he decides to resign his position in court to rescue harlow from hanging, and also nullifies the chance of entrance into a higher society, "yes! i love her!! but not the way i do you"...as he glances her being sent to the police, she looks up to wave farewell, he smiles warmly then the movies closes.
"china seas" has engrossing melodramaticity, gut-wrenching villainy and the enchanting oriental backset to gloss the scenes. the first shoot of panoramic view of a thousand ships in the china seas is impressing, and the picturesque set of hong kong dock is turbulently prosperous. it has kaleiscopic scenes of orient despite the usage of its disdains to its people, such as the bitter-tongued annoying oriental lady as the stereotyped asian cosmopolitan who humuliates harlow by calling her the cheap liquor before the delicate wine, the lives costed by typhoon catastrophe are all asians who get run over by the giant machine and gable sneers at the chinese pirates who are also the negative oritental stereotype as insidiously inscrutable. put racism and sexism aside, "china seas" is vivid and vibrant with enough dramaticities and exotica to pay audience's interests. and this time, gable/harlow romance is managed in a more chivalric way, and the script does come up with a more proper twist to nobilize clark gable, and more "romantic" in its partriachic pattern.
the wardrobe of jean harlow's is also another fashion accomplishment by adrian, and some dresses harlow wears in "china seas" should have become stylistic milestone. adrian pastiches the styles of occident and orient well in several night gowns with dragon and pheonix upon the backside. except the one dress which bares harlow right breast(a blatant gratitude for male audience), all the other brightful suits are sorta neat and lovely. besides, clark gable also looks very dashing in white navy suit of captain when his "diamond in the raw" phallic image mellows.it's the best among the gable/harlow collaborations. the black with a white phoenix on the back and the dress she wears in the "a woman could love a man right down her fingertip"...and in the flick, jean harlow wears a wig becuz her trademark blonde hair is in its awful shape due to repeated dyeing. and the orient backset is an escapist purpose to console the audience in the depression area. it's highly watchable with enough dramatic plots.

James Dean
by LisaReally excellent biopic about the legend that is James Dean. For films like this is is seriously hard to choose the right actors to portray them. James Franco however made an excellent James Dean. The two do look very similar so that helped a lot. Some parts of the film were made up which I really didn't see the point of. Like Dean's father telling him his mother wasn't sure he was his father. Why? All the performances in the film are fantastic. I even read that the beach house is the one that was used in Beaches. I also heard that James Franco became so immersed in playing James Dean that he went from being a non smoker to smoking two packs a day, as well as playing the guitar, the bongos, and learned to ride a motorcycle. That's dedication. A must see film for all James Dean fans.
Seen this ages ago but no one has seen it so I thought I would recommend it. James Franco is surprisingly good as James Dean.

Fight Club
by BillI hadn't written a review for this movie mainly because I couldn't do it justice. The over all film is done so well and so close to the book that comparing the two you almost coudlnt' tell the differance. There hasn't ever been a movie so close as far as I can tell.
Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter were all perfect for their roles and played the superbly.
David Fincher is amazing behind the camera and knows how to tell a story. The way he sets everything up makes for an amazing ending.
I can't write enough of this movie and I know a few of you in my list agree. When a movie effects the way you look at the world then you know it has done something right.

Hi Jules ,I saw Shia Labeouf sat night at the dress for SNL - and he told us there would be this secret screening that night.
With the film and Spielberg not shying away from the original subtext of the franchise (the Reagan conquest) - Indi and his boy make for a fun play on the same metaphor this time around.
Dr. Jack Wheeler is a legend. he was the inspiration for the famed movie character.
While Jack has often been called a "real life Indiana Jones" and is part of the mix of historical figures Stephen Spielberg used (along with his own imagination) to create his fictional hero -- "Jones" is cartoon fiction and Wheeler is real.
In the 1980s he conducted a series of extensive visits to anti-Soviet guerrilla insurgencies in Nicaragua, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Laos, and Afghanistan, and to democracy movements in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, becoming an unofficial liaison between them and the Reagan White House. Based on his experiences with anti-Soviet insurgencies, he developed the strategy for dismantling the Soviet Empire adopted by the White House known as the "Reagan Doctrine. " It worked.
Dr. Jack Wheeler is virtually immeasurable as the architect of the Reagan Doctrine, he is one of the handful of men most responsible for the defeat of the Soviet Empire in the 1980s. He served his country as an "unofficial" liaison between the Reagan White House and anti-Soviet insurgents, pro-democracy activists and freedom fighters around the world, in Nicaragua, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, throughout Eastern Europe and in the Soviet Union itself.
its a fun film still full of the Reagan metaphors ..

A Free Soul
by Veronique"a free soul" is the very flick which gets clark gable some female attention with the notorious scene of him pushing norma shearer roughly to the couch for three times! blatant violence on woman, but endearing gable is always excusable since he's doing it for the sake of love.
norma shearer plays a spoilt rich gal jan ashe who defies her family by dating mobster ace wilfong(gable), emancipated by her alcoholic father(lionel barrymore) who encourages her to be free. so she sneaks to the mobster's residence shamelessly as if she's his mistress for months. infatuated by jan's tumultuous lovemaking, wilfong falls head over heels in love with jan, then he consults her father's approval for the marriage proposal...due to the gap of social status, the father finally sombers up and condemns jan for hanging around with wilfong. so jan makes a bargain with dad that if he quits booze, she would quits gable. then the father and daughter disappear for three months in wilderness for eradication of liquor which fails eventually. and norma shearer returns to the dangerously charismatic clark gable while he's infuriated by her abscence, then he threatens her to marry him or he would announce their affair to ruin her social reputation. in the end, shearer's another love interest leslie howard comes to the scene to shoot gable to death, gallantly rescuing her from gable's villainy.
clark gable is still in his mustacheless period and credited as the third in the cast, but his overwhelming caveman-alike machismo thrills millions of women then while he growls "you're mine and you belong to me! don't you ever run away!!!" and his disdemeanors to push norma shear in fur is highly appreciated by the audience in depression period due to the animosity to idle rich, and gable's contempt to norma's social superiority was approved by proles who disdain the condescending loftiness of upper class. besides, gable's character has been devoted to shearer who is just ficklely having a good time slumming, and she's contrary to whoever posts disapproving opinions on her. when her family refuses to accept gable, she throws herself to him, as gable declares his determination to marry her, she ducks away. and he's traumatized by her frivolosity but too proud to admit it. so his rage is perfectly justified, and he wants her so he's gonna rob her away to be his! this tough kind of savage manhood is considered utterly sexy by women then.it was made in the depression area. when norma shearer was still alllowed to behave sluttishly in movies before the demure lady image in the "the women"...gable was not major star then but his rough machismo attracts millions of women then when he pushes norma shearer to the couch...women were thrilled when he shouts "you're mine! and i want you! so you belong to me! don't you ever run away!"

Wristcutters - A Love Story
by LisaI've heard a lot about this film recently so I thought I'd better see what all the fuss was about. The title set certain impressions of the film, so I didn't really bother reading the synopsis. I was wrong about that. I thought it would be about teenagers trying to commit suicide. I thought it would just be some bad emo film. I was glad that I was wrong. No, it wasn't excellent but it wasn't your usual love story either so it's always a pleasure to watch films that have a different take on things. The inexperience of everything really comes through in this film. Although it doesn't hinder the film in anyway. It showcases the young talent in all the different fields of film making. Some of the sequences are quite striking, especially the very first one. Patrick Fugit does a really great job in the leading role and all the other characters work well together. I really can't complain about any of it. Yes, there are flaws but nothing that would bother you an awful lot. A recommended film just because it's different.

Speed Racer (2008)
by BrianWelcome to the exhilerating world of Speed Racer. Not only does the title define the character, it's actually his name. The Racer family lives in Technicolor splendor in their small town, and they, as their last name suggests, enjoy racing. Especially Speed. Speed doesn't necessarily enjoy racing more than the rest of the family, he's just the fastest and brightest at it. The movie starts out with Speed as a child, making believe he's driving in a race while he's supposed to be taking the school test. At first, it seems like Speed Racer will be an acceptable children's film. It ends up being a moving, exhilerating, out of body, out of this world experience. And I was touched by it too. The Wachowski brothers (V for Vendetta, The Matrix) have proven themselves as psychological go getters. Here, their philosophy is a little more simple. Do what you love to do, go for it, reach for the stars, and don't let anybody get in your way. There is someone who tries to get in Speed's way. His name is Royalton, and he offers Speed to join him. Speed says no, and Royalton makes sure that every race is fixed, bribing other racers to beat him, hurt him, even kill him. There's one line in the film where Speed says something to the affect of: "I always thought that racing was all about the experience, but now I realize that it's all about business." I think the Wachowski's might feel the same way about film making. It's all about the business, and the Wachowski's are much like Speed Racer. They haven't let the producers, and the agents, and the studios, and the executives, or anybody else get in their way. They've made their film, and they made it the way they wanted to. They've reached for the stars. Speed does too. The final scene in this film is so touching and exhilerating that you may just leap from your seat in joy. You'll be a child again. Not since the original Star Wars has such excitement been able to embody me into a truly out of body experience. The visual style of the film is everything I've seen before while being nothing I've seen before. It's filmed in the style of the original campy tv series, but, in live action, the colors and camera movements, and editing style along with the beautiful cropped panning are new, inventive, and outrageous. I love Speed Racer as much as I've ever loved any film, and I hope the box office slum of mother's day weekend doesn't oppose people to seeing the film. Critics haven't been very kind either. But, what they're not seeing is the creativity and the guts to do what the Wachowski's have done, and any way you slice it, they have gloriously finished the race in first place, no matter what the 'Royalton's' of the business may say.
I stongly urge you to see this!
