Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked) - R The feeling I experienced when I first discovered this film: utter relief. Relief that rock and roll movies did not die along with Almost Famous, and relief that finally an English movie lived up to its potential- finally no cheesy Hugh Grant crap or overly quirky indies. Though they didn't rid of the cheesy- and quirkiness, just used it for a greater good, which results in an excellent combination of great British music and great British humour. A truly hilarious and endearing film, accompanied by great, goofy acting and the perfect soundtrack. January 5, 2010

21 Grams - R Intense and intricate and hauntingly gripping, this kept me spellbound for the full ride, even though it's definitely not a pleasant one. I don't think I've ever seen so many complex characters fit into an entire film, and so fantastically portrayed by its actors. Babel was one of my favourites up until now but Babel is only mediocre in comparison to this masterpiece. Truly brilliant movie. January 5, 2010

Into the Wild - R Into the Wild is by far the most depressing film I have ever seen, as well as being the most inspiring, eye-opening and fascinating, though most of that fades away at the end. I have never seen a film based on true events that left me with such a strong taste of wanting more.. more answers.. more truth.. nor has a film ever evoked such strong emotions in me. Penn has done a phenomenal job with capturing this truly magnificent story. I also thought the idea of having his sister do a voice-over to illustrate the flaws of the heroic character was brilliant. Everything about this movie is great: great acting by great actors, great directing by a great filmmaker, an amazingly haunting soundtrack by a great artist.. I just wish the ending could have been different.. that McCandless could have been proven right and his journey would have touched more people's lives. Then again, that would have been a lie. The Godfather - R The thing with Coppola's movies: you cannot deny its greatness and brilliance and utter epic, and it's easy to be appreciative of that fact, but it is impossible to really embrace his films as one of my favourites. Every scene, every inch of this movie has the quality of a truly great movie- the cast, the dialogue, the directing. It is an epic classic which holds your attention but to be rightfully called "the best film of all-time" it should at least hold a certain significance, which it didn't to me. It probably deserves a higher score, if only for the legendary performances of Brando and Pacino, but really, if there is one movie that has been overhyped it must be The Godfather, and it has not earned the right to be called the greatest movie ever- it just does not live up to the hype. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG Simply brilliant. Yates is a genius. The series started off with its main concern being to appeal to the readers and capturing the book on screen, in which it has always succeeded, but as for the movies itself, they were a little lame. Yates' entirely different approach works much better, it worked for "The Order of the Phoenix", but he really nailed "The Half-Blood Prince". Harry Potter is shown from a more darker, humane and in depth angle that fits perfectly with the maturing characters. Aside from the directing, the quality of the acting is also put on display, the actors have really been given the opportunity to mature a bit and show different aspects of their characters. Perhaps that is not exactly according to the readers' wishes - especially those with younger souls, but as for me, I think the series needed this change of portrayal, without losing the essentiality of the books, and it has definitely made me more appreciative of the films, right on time for the climax of the series which I await with great anticipation. Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella) - PG-13 This is a masterpiece that stands out in all of the hundreds of war movies ever made. Who would ever think of trying humour? It gave me goose bumps in every part of my body. So much love, so much strength, so much humanity in a time so inhumane- it's breathtaking. January 5, 2010

True Romance - R Everything about this film reeks of Tarantino, but it does not deliver as one, and I was left disappointed. Had he directed it himself, the movie would have the same legendary status as Pulp Fiction by now. The suspense just doesn't come across rightfully. Also, the music editing is done horribly amateurish and distracts from the movie a lot. The only thing right about True Romance (aside from its script, obviously) is the epic cast; Slater and Arquette are especially brilliant and carry the entire film. What remains is a tremendously enjoyable film which could have been Tarantino's masterpiece but has gone to waste in the hands of Scott. January 5, 2010
