Lady Jane
PG-13
Historical dramas do tend to put me to sleep. I only bought this to complete my Cary Elwes collection, but it soon became a favourite. H B Carter and Elwes are both fantastic, the script is very well-written, the music is fitting, and it's not a minute too long. If it happened anything like this film suggests, then Lady Jane Grey is a great idol of mine, and for sure the only figure of history that I'm at all interested in. A genuine artwork and no too great an emphasis can be put on Helena Bonham Carter's outstanding performance...
The Ballad of Jack and Rose
R
Just too average to be of any significant interest. Although Camilla Belle is an unfailingly brilliant actress, I can't help but feel that she and Jena Malone were in each other's roles. Daniel Day-Lewis and Catherine Keener are fine but they both needed to bring more emotion to the story. As it is, it's forgettable, and kind of hollow. The script is loose and lacking, the soundtrack is a total nothing, and the plot is actually quite dull. 2.5 stars for being watchable enough, and for Jena Malone, who is fantastic enough to earn any film a couple of stars all by herself...
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
PG
Much as it breaks my burton-devoted heart to say it, this movie has always been a great disappointment to me. The concept is fantastic and the potential is all there- it could have been an absolute wonder, but sadly it is merely pretty good, which is not something Burton films often are, and certainly not something they ever should be. Although I'll admit this kind of film isn't really about an intricate story, there are limits, and I cannot think of a single other movie which has quite this many plot-holes. Elfman's score is wonderful, but there should have been more songs, and unfortunately the ones that are already there are far from spectacular. The visuals are just amazing, but the opening sequence is rather lacking which just kicks the movie off to a bad start. Overall, it just needed more soul, and though it's sad, it just has to be compared to 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' which is Burton's true animated masterpiece, and I believe it always will be. 'Corpse Bride' has so much to render it watchable- the script has some great moments, the voices are excellent and some scenes are just divine, especially the one with the piano duet, but something very important is missing and I'm just so glad Burton came back a few years later with Todd to show us he hasn't lost it...
Hellboy
PG-13
This movie is kind of there for the visuals, and that's fine because they're worth watching it for. The performances are all good, especially from Perlman and Blair, who are both often overlooked, so it's nice that they were thrown in as the leads in this one. The script is pretty lame right through, but there are some good lines and the characters are fun. But come on, we all know what we watch this kind of movie for...
30 Days of Night
R
Dark, bloody and full of screams, no harm is done by a movie like this. Hartnett gives a good performance in the lead role, sadly followed by a weak cast, but it's not too much of a setback here. It's original and well-made, with some fun deaths and a cool ending- no real complaints, but it's not incredibly amazingly wonderful enough to earn it anymore stars. It's more lacking goodness than inclusive of badness, but overall it's still good and definitely worth seeing...
Deeply
R
Although it took a while for her accent to grow on me, Kirsten Dunst is still for me really the only thing to watch this film for. The other lead girl is good but the rest of the acting is completely appalling, the script is disgustingly bad and the plot doesn't even make sense. It's not moving at all, which makes me angry because it puts Dunst's talent to waste. Not the worst film ever, but definitely not worth going out of your way to see...

The Nightmare Before Christmas (The Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney Digital 3-D)
PG
The story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town whose years and years of preparing and celebrating Halloween have run him dry. Especially depressed one year, he sets out into the woods and discovers Christmas Town. Overwhelmed by the colourful contrast, he decides to take on Christmas for a change. He kidnaps Santa (all in good spirit) and sets about making preparations for the new holiday. Inevitable problems follow. There's not really anything wrong with this film, in fact it's probably the closest thing to perfection that cinema has ever been able to offer us. Burton's stunning imagination, Selick's skilled direction and Elfman's to this day unmatched soundtrack form an unbeatable combination in the world of film, which is proven by this visually flawless, witty, and deceptively innocent work of movie genius. Completely wonderful in every way...

The Princess Bride
PG
A man visits his sick grandson to read to him the story of 'The Princess Bride'- the tale of farmboy Westley and his infatuation with Buttercup, the simple-minded beauty who eventually catches on and immediately loves him back, naturally. When parted by pirates and presumptions, the two are sucked into an adventure involving fireswamps, evil plots, kidnappers, miracles and of course, 'the machine'. This is a near perfect movie, starring such legends as Cary Elwes, Christopher Guest and Chris Sarandon, who all bring so much to their already fantastic characters. The script is faithfully based on the novel and is therefore endlessly quotable, painfully witty and just completely priceless. The best adventure story ever, and easily one of the greatest movies of all time. Totally charming, rewatchable and flawlessly directed...

The Ice Storm
R
So we've all seen a million shoddy soppy dull as fuck family dramas- the genre is full of garbage, that's just a fact. This one is not only the best of its genre, but I'd call it one of the greatest films ever. Set in Connecticut in the 1970's, 'The Ice Storm' follows two equally failed marriages and how the families' children become victims of their parents' drained depressing lives. There seems to be a predominant focus on the relationships between the unfulfilled stressed parents and their reserved nerdy teenage children. Weaver, Allen and Maguire are excellent, and goddess Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood form the most talented movie partnership in film history. The characters are perfectly defined by the beautiful script, the visuals are amazing and the themes are meticulously and poetically explored, to extents which other dramas can only envy. If I could rate it 6 stars I would, if just for that lush red poncho of Ricci's. Absolutely phenomenal, and in no way a reflection of Ang Lee's other work...

The Crow
R
Apart from one disgustingly tragic flaw, which must remain nameless for the sake of the its reputation, this movie is basically perfect. Brandon Lee gives a hellishly outstanding performance as Eric Draven, who returns from grave a year after he and his fiancée are brutally murdered to avenge their deaths and to...make things right? Well certainly, much of this movie doesn't make actual sense, but it's not supposed to be a complex thought-provoking thriller now, is it? It's exactly what it needed to be- dark, funny, entertaining, beautiful and easily in my top ten...

Sleepover
by Marvin
Directed by : Joe Nussbaum
Casts : Steve Carrell,Alexa Vega
ALMOST TWO THIRD OF THIS MOVIE CONTAINS NOTHING INSIDE,AND THE OTHER ONE THIRD IS ALL THE WRONG TURN OF "MEAN GIRLS"
FIRST THING FIRST,WHY I EVEN WATCH THIS MOVIE?One of my dearest friend persuade me to watch her "Favourite movie of all-time",and I ridiculously fell off. So,I guess the blame is not on me now.
Despite ever thought that Sleepover would'nt be such a mediocre, now,my eyes is wide open,Sleepover has the most standart feature ever as a teen-movie.Sleepover is a painful combination of teen-mediocre,social caste climber, and romance in the most unimportant notion.Thought it will be a Mean Girls' escape,I didn't receive a thing like Mean Girls.
Sleepover is trying too hard to bring up such a simple topic,a group of lame girls who want to climb the social caste up to the highest. In the most typical fashion,Sleepover is succeed to bring up a movie full of ambition and desperation they needed, despite it's huge-hole of missing fun and a comedy that no one could ever buy.
Sleepover is a teen-universe mediocre, who merely didn't bring up any sense of originality, and moreover,it's so shallow,I think a 12 years old is choosing "Fight Club" over this one.

Buffalo Soldiers
by scott1989, the end of the cold war, the berlin wall is coming down, and what do a platoon of american soldiers do when there isnt a war to fight, but stuck in a foreign country, west germany in this case. they create there own, joaquin phoenix plays such a guy, living off the wealth he makes from dodgy deals hes making on the side with his team of loyal followers, and with no war going on, ed harris colonal, maybe either to dumb to notice or letting things go by. its when higher authority played by scott glen turns up, and makes out whats happening from the get go, with a higher and more risky deal on the cards, and his romance with the colonals daughter will things get to deep for phoenix. a look at the u.s army as a bunch or no clue, doped up, or bored g.is, in a situation where is there is no war and nothing to do, not sheding a good light, and when released just after 911, suffered for it, a razor sharp script, and a well observed drama both at the time and situations involved, all actors, phoenix, glen, panquin, and ed harris stand up well, but also the minor roles, especially michael pena, some great scenes of great acting, and a centrepice involving a tank on rampage is a highlight, a cracking film showing obserdaty of war when theres no war

Dead Man's Shoes
by xGaryThis bleak tale of revenge set in a small English town sees Paddy Considine leaving the army and returning home to extract brutal revenge on a group of small time drug dealers who abused his retarded younger brother while he was away. This is an unusual revenge thriller as it often looks more like a slasher flick; Considine is obviously an unstable murderer who has been trained to kill and he systematically executes each of his victims in a very horror film style way. Except in this case his victims are a bunch of unsympathetic scum bags who you can't help feeling probably deserve their fate. In this way the film throws up many mixed emotions as you're never quite sure who you are supposed to be rooting for! But the real kick in the gut is provided by Shane Meadows; he directs very much like a documentary photographer cataloging the grim reality of working class small town life. The actors involved are ugly. They have bad hair and cheap clothes. In other words they look like REAL people, not Hollywood's glamorized, sanitized version of them. As such you feel you are right there in the thick of it, actually witnessing these gruesome events rather than just watching a piece of entertainment. It won't be to everyone's tastes as it's quite a tough movie to sit through because of its extremely grim subject matter, but ultimately it's a very powerful piece of work.
