Dr. Parnassus had made a deal with the Devil tha will give him immortality. Over the years Parnassus continued to make deals with devil including trading his immortality for youth when he meets the love of his life. The Devil however makes deal with Parnassus that when his daughter reaches the age of 16 she belongs to him. Now with her 16th birthday rapidly approaching Dr. Parnassus will make another deal with the devil. The first man to seduce 5 souls will win Valentina. Parnassus is willing to take on the help of anyone, including the mysterious Tony who seems to have eyes for Valentina.
Where do I start? There is so much I want to touch on during this review, I don?t know where to start. I will start with Terry Gilliam. His stunning world comes to life. Gilliam crafted this in his mind and it came to life beautifully on the big screen. This film has some of the best visuals I have seen in recent films. It was all about what one imagined anything they wanted to see when they stepped through the magic mirror. The possibilities were endless, and Gilliam showed us just a tiny glimpse into the minds of certain people. I like his semi-dark semi-humorous approach. It really helped lighten up the film at certain times.
Dr. Parnassus had the gift of guiding the imagination of others, some might say that is a great gift, but as already mentioned it comes with a price, and that price is his daughters freedom at the age of 16. Parnassus despite having this wonderful ability was often seen as poor and homeless. You see people look down upon those types of people. Christopher Plummer looked old, and that added substance to his performance. His liquored up failing Dr. Parnassus was an oddity. This performance was stellar, perfection if I might say so.
Lily Cole was perfectly cast as Valentina, she isn?t a widely known actress, but she has the potential. This film was her first big performance and she did really well. She was beautiful as well as powerful in some of her scenes and that is all one can really hope for. She couldn?t run from her life because she was bound by the Devil to her father, a secret she wasn?t aware of, but as she started to put it all together she realized that her father wasn?t the best of men. All though her father had traded her away Valentina could not help but love him anyway.
And that brings me to the hardest of all Topics to discuss. Heath Ledger, what a brilliant performance in his final film performance. Tony was mysterious, Parnassus and his friends find him hanging under a bridge and all throughout the film Tony tries so desperately to keep his secret hidden from the rest of them. But like all secrets it does come out. Ledger is and will forever be considered a phenomenal young actor. His final performance was one that showcased his talent in its truest form. This film was a lot better than anyone could have imagined it to be. I am saddened by Heaths death and will forever wonder what this man could have done, but what saddens me the most about his death is that his young daughter Matilda has to grow up never knowing him as a father, and all she has are images of him in his films. I found myself getting sad when Tony transformed into Johnny Depp, then back to Ledger, then to Law and back to Ledger but when he went into the mirror that one last time I had a mixed feeling. I was sad of course, but also I found myself completely focused on this performance. Heath gave us one final showing of brilliance, and that is how I want to remember this film. I have a lot of respect for what Heath did as an actor, and I hope his name and his stunningly brilliant performances can live on for many generations to come.
This film as I said was surprisingly better than I could have ever hoped for. It was magical, and explained itself. The characters were vibrant, and they were people with issues, magical fairy tale issues, but issues none the less. Terry Gilliam has given us one last film in which to remember Heath Ledger by. I find it eloquent that Heaths final movie was so magical and so beautiful in its own right, just as his career was.
A good solid film. Not for everyone, see it for the right reasons.
R.I.P Heath Ledger 1979-2008. Your passion and energy will never be forgotten.
Chris Pratt: Once upon a time, I woke up. I took a shower with soap.
Chris Pratt was an up and coming hockey star, until one night he got into an accident that changed everything. Chris was left with short term memory loss. Chris still wanting to maintain a normal life, takes a job working as a night janitor at a bank, which leads to his involvement in a well planned heist.
Starts off really strong, the first scene is intense. Right from the beginning Scott Frank sets the mood, this isn?t going to be a light hearted film where everything plays out according to plan. Chris was driving recklessly and anyone could see that, and the accident that he was a part of changed not only his life but those who were with him. Chris cannot change that and has to live with losing not only his memory but two of his best friends during the accident.
Then we see how Chris has started to move on, he is starting to write again, do basic training exercizes so that he can remember his day. We see that Chris still has ambitions, that he is determined to make it somewhere. Chris wants to be a teller at the bank. All though through all of this we still see that Chris cannot talk to his girlfriend at the time of the accident Kelly. All though he has come a long way it is still difficult for the two to talk about what happened and how it forever changed their lives.
In Comes Gary Spargo, a man who knows all too much about Chris's injuries and how it is affecting and Gary takes advantage of that, by pretending he can offer Chris something even his own parents are reluctant to give him and that is money. With the promise of Money, power and happiness Chris decides to help out Gary with a little help from Luvlee who we learn is just playing Chris.
Chris realizes after it is too late what he has done, he cannot go back now, and must face the consequences head on.
Not at all a fast paced film, just well paced. It didn?t need to get ahead of itself, therefore it took the plot slow. Chris needed to be shown struggling before we could ever believe that he would help out Spargo and his buddies. We needed to see how Chris's parents treated him after the accident. This film didn?t dive right into the heist part of it, it allowed for a smooth transition from simple man to confused man. Chris began to struggle with his thoughts and his decisions, questioning what was right and what was wrong before he ultimately came to realize what he was doing.
Gary Spargo: My old man used to say to me, probably the only thing we ever really agreed on, was that whoever has the money has the power. You might wanna jot that down in your book. It's something you're gonna need to remember.
Easily an entertaining film, not the best of the best, but I wasn?t hoping for that. I wanted a well developed, well planned out film and I got just that. I easily got into Chris's recovery, hoped the best for him and mini spoiler I was sad when Ted the cop died. I was hoping he wouldn?t have died. But all these little things brought realism to the film, and that is really all anyone could want. Easily a film that relies on its lead Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the painful scenes, and he is amazing. I learned that he trained and hung out and attended real classes for those with short term memory loss. Joseph also let the role consume him, he could little sleep and work out allowing himself to grow weary and tired. That is dedication. Joseph stated that before filming wrapped up he had been working on the character of Chris Pratt for 11 months. Where a film like this would probably take 3 or 4 months at tops to film. Joseph cared enough about the performance to go and learn what it was like to live with short term memory loss and all his hard work paid off.
A good film. Go rent it, I am saddened by the fact that I didn?t go and see this one at the cinema when it was out, and that I waited two years to rent it. If you want to see this, do not wait another second. Go and rent it.
Chris Pratt: I started skating again. I'm not as good as I used to be, but I'm okay. What happened that night along Route 24 is a part of me now. I just hope that one day Kelly will be ready to see me again and I can finally tell her what I've only been able to say in my dreams. Until then, all I can do is wake up, take a shower, with soap, and try to forgive myself. If I can do that, then maybe others will forgive me too. I don't know if that will happen, but I guess I'll just have to work backwards from there.
This movie was the best movie of 2006, it was a story that has happened and was a movie that showed the true effects of the diamond industry and what they do to get the diamonds oveer to a place that will sell them
Leonardo Dicaprio has really become an awesome actor and he is really someone to watch out for in the next few years, their was been early rumors about leo winning best actor and after watching this movie i feel that he definitley should and that it would be ashame if he didnt
Djimon Hounsou played such a wonderfull part in this movie, his character of solomon vandy shouldnt have been mixed up in this but he wanted his Family back and he wanted his life back. The army took his son and he went on this journey to get him back
Jennifer Connelly definitley fit in this movie, sometimes they dont make a space for a third person but in this movie they sure did.
this movie was totally graphic and you could se that in the way they showed the scences of the miliray making kids do their work. and the scenes which showed all those people getting shot were really shocking to watch because you never think of thjese thongs happening
This movie was an all around good film that i believe everyone should watch sometime ib their life
The Dark Knight begins with Batman working with Jim Gordon(Oldman) who is the cop willing to do what it takes to end crime in Gotham City. With the help of Harvey Dent( Eckhart) and Rachel Dawes (Gyllenhaal) they have to unite and figure out what is right to stop the new criminal of Gotham City simply known as the Joker(Ledger). The joker is phycopathic and plays on the emotions and it doesnt it for kicks, not really having a motive.
The Late Heath Ledger is flawless. Everything and anything good that has been said about his portrayal is accurate. Heath delivers his lines, and it goves you chills when he says what he says. Heath's portrayal of the Joker is far more sinical then anyother villian I have seen to date. He is willing to do anything, just to prove his point, just to get the thrill of explosions and killing. Heath Ledger will always be remembered. Heath deserves the posthumous oscar award. He deserves any and all praise willing to be given. Flawless portrayal. It left me speachless for a good half an hour after I watched it.
Gary Oldman and Christian Bale do such a wonderful job playing Batman and Gordon. Batman is different this time around.Gordon is willing to take down thw criminals but Batman isnt so sure that they can take down the Joker.
The Special affects are rocking. The Story is perfect, The acting is flawless. This is the best comic book adaption I have ever scene.
Chris and Jonathon Nolan wrote a script that will never be forgotten. This film is stand alone when you think of comic book adaptions. This is the Batman we were all waiting to see. This is the Joker that we have come to wish for. This is the movie that will end up being the best of 08. This movie will go down in history. Its more then just Batman, its the Joker, its acting at its finest, its A struggle of knowing what is right and what is wrong. Its characters developed to the point where it almost seems real.
R.I.P Heath Ledger 1979-2008.
