Dan in Real Life - PG-13 The main character was the main character in 40 Year Old Virgin. Though I have no plans to see that movie, this one was wonderful.

Dan, the main character, is a newspaper columnist who writes responses to letters asking for advice in marriage and child raising. His column is called Dan in Real Life. He is also a single dad of three daughters, whose wife died four years earlier. Every year, his whole family has a family vacation back at Dan's parents' house. It's that time of year.

After they arrive, Dan goes out to the book store. He meets a woman there and they hit is off well. She has to go in a hurry, so he goes back to the house only to find she's dating his brother. Things get interesting from there.

The movie is funny in many parts, but teaches some serious lessons, many of which Dan himself has to learn.

I suggest this movie to anyone.

Proof - PG-13 Last night we watched Proof. It was amazing. It definitely deserves 5 out of 5 stars. It is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

The movie is a kind of slow drama that is heart wrenching. The main character is the daughter of a brilliant mathematician. He went crazy at about her age. For the last five years she's been taking care of him when no one else will, giving up her dreams to do it. A week before the movie starts, he died. He has over a hundred notebooks that he wrote basically nonsense in during the last five years. His grad student is going through them. The main character's mothering sister is coming out for the funeral. The main character, Catherine, has to deal with the loss of her father, the possibility she too will go crazy, and with the people in the house she's lived in for most of her life. She's brilliant, also. Will she, too, go crazy? Is she crazy now?

30 Days of Night - R 30 Days of Night is based on a graphic novel. The premise is that in Barrel, Alaska, where there are thirty days of night in the middle of the winter, during which the sun doesn't rise, vampires come. It's an interesting concept, and I think they pulled it off well. Also, the vampires in it were very interesting, different from most movie vampires. I liked how they were done. Also, the special effects were done well in a way that wasn't over the top and seemed real, and the acting was very good in my opinion. There were a lot of jump scenes, and points where you weren't quite sure what was happening (in a good way), but it wasn't too over the top in my opinion. There was a lot of blood and some graphic parts, though. I loved the end, but it isn't an ending for everyone. October 23, 2007

The Bourne Ultimatum - PG-13 This last week, we watched the Bourne Ultimatum. Though it had little similarity to the book, I really enjoyed it. I'd give it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

The movies diverged from the books early on. The first one was enough different, that the second one couldn't follow the book. Too many basic facts had changed. This is even more the case now. I enjoyed all three books and all three movies, but can't really call them the same thing.

Both the book and the movie are about Bourne tracking down an organization from his past, pre-Treadstone. In the book, it's Medusa, which we learned a lot about in the first two books. In the movie, it's Blackfriar. From there, the plots have little similarity.

The many issues I had with this movie are with Bourne himself. Bourne is the Chameleon. He changes to fit his surroundings. He would never be seen the same way twice. He makes people see him as a different person. You see none of that in this movie. He stays the same throughout the movie, and people keep recognizing him easily. Also, Bourne is careful, watching everything, doing nothing without a purpose. At the beginning, he knocks over a bunch of bottles for no good reason. That isn't Bourne. But other than those two things, I thought the movie was well done and very good.

The Simpsons Movie - PG-13 Last week we watched the Simpsons Movie. It was hilarious. I've seen reviews that said it wasn't that great, but I disagree. I enjoyed it greatly. Out of 5 stars, I would give it 4 1/2.

For anyone who has watched the show, even if they haven't watched it through the entire 19 seasons, the characters will of course be familiar. The general plot is that Lake Springfield as got so polluted that something has to be done. Lisa starts a campaign to solve the problem, which helps until Homer does something stupid. Then the Government steps in. The movie has two many points, I think, politically. First is that we have to work to protect the environment. Second is that everyone has their own agenda and that we can't rely on groups like the EPA to solve the problems in a way that's in our interest. We have to solve them ourselves.

Anyway, I loved it.

In a Dark Place - R Earlier this week, we watched In a Dark Place, starring Leelee Sobieski. It was strange, but I enjoyed it. There are parts that make me say some people should not watch it, because it would be too hard. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

The movie is about a girl who has been abused and taken advantage of for most of her life. She is a teacher, but gets fired. The man who fires her recommends her as a nanny for two children. The children's parents have died and the man looking for a nanny is the children's uncle. The girl moves out to the manor where the children and the lady taking care of the estate live. She starts seeing and experiencing strange things and is worried about the children's safety.

Pathfinder - R About a week ago, we watched Patherfinder. It wasn't as good as we hoped, lacking in the plot, but was well done. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars.

The movie is made off a graphic novel. It's about a man who was born of Viking warriors, but raised by a Native American tribe. When the Vikings return, he must face his past and defend his (new) people from his (old) people. He must find who he is and what role he must play.

It was well done, having amazing camera work and vivid scenes that, though filmed, could have been paintings. The characters were believable and real. The fights and the bloodshed, though sometimes too bloody or fast to follow well, captured the feel of battle. The only bad thing about it was that the plot was somewhat lacking. It went straight into constant fighting too fast and didn't give you enough time to get to know the characters.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - R A few days ago, we saw Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. It was a hard movie but I really enjoyed it. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

Perfume is a story about a boy who has an extra-sensitive nose to the point that he can smell things that are far away, every detail. It is a picturesque novel in form. The boy starts as a nothing, and rises through society, never truly part of it. His need for preserving the smells, the only things important to him, brings him to murder.

It is a very well-done movie, but involves a lot of things that are hard to take. There are sex scenes that are not exactly what I'd call beautiful. The deaths were hard as well. Overall, though, I am glad I watched it.

The movie is based on a book. I want to read it now.
