2012 2012 PG-13
I thought that John Cusack had never been in a rubbish film...not that i've seen everything he's in. I think this maybe breaks his record. I must admit to having a fascination for films involving global armageddon, from natural disasters to zombies and aliens. And it has to be said, as ridiculously implausible as the epically disastrous upheavals are, i went to the boy's room during the equally implausible, 'humans forgetting their problems and coming together' pap. So, will this get people to pursue Charles Hapgood's catastrophist accounts of geology as opposed to tectonics? I'm not sure, but i feel a distinct craving for blueberry muffins. So, as a film does it stand up? Not really. At least, not in the way that Deep Impact almost did. I'd love to see a serious film along these lines instead of the usual formulaic bunkum. Which 2012 is really. Still, it was hardly a surprise. I can see myself watching this again on the computer and forwarding through all the boring stuff and getting to the effects.
Zombieland Zombieland R
Thoroughly enjoyable zombie flick, led by a great narrative voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, and the charmingly slaughterous antics of Woody Harrelson. (Not sure if 'slaughterous' is a word, but hopefully you get the picture). There's really not much to say in the way of a plot; it's basically a road-movie, and tends to follow the tried-and-tested routine of a bunch of different people hooking up and putting paid to the walking dead in many and varied ways. The humour level sets it apart from many of the 'serious' zombie films of late, but i thought it rocked.

Aliens Aliens R
What can i say? This is my favorite action movie of all. The only 'alien' movie anyone need ever watch (the rest of the sequels were pap - you're better off reading the original comics). I like this movie for a similar reason that i like Predator, watching a bunch of well-equipped, highly trained, super-gung ho yahoos get torn a new one by a supremely basic organism. And the end sequence with the exo-suit and the gaffa-taped pulse rifle has not been topped since. Hundreds have tried to emulate it, but have never gone anywhere near this film. Who said sequels are never as good as originals?
Wayne's World Wayne's World PG-13
This movie not only introduced me to the comedy of Mike Meyers, it also softened my very critical approach to rock music at the time. Moreover, this must be one of the biggest single sources of teenage slang offered up in the 90s. Anyone who used (or, like myself, continues to use) the following phrases owes this movie... "psycho hose beast", "the cream of some young guy", "she'd give a dog a bone", "sheah" (for indicating "obviously, yeah") or "shwing" (leave that definition up to you). Brilliant.
