My Favorite Movies

  KingChop's Rating My Rating
1
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) (2000,  PG-13)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long)
Stunningly beautiful to look at, excellent performances, brilliantly choreogrpahed martial arts sequences and a well written story about honour and repressed love. This is a first rate movie and one of my all-time favourites.
2
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) (1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
Quite simply, the perfect blockbuster movie. Raiders is a dazzling action adventure with superb set pieces, brilliant characters and dastardly villians. This and Jaws are Spielberg's finest films.

Footnote: It's not 'Indiana Jones and...' for fucks sake, it's 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' OK?
3
Batman Returns (1992,  PG-13)
Batman Returns
Loved Tim Burton's version of Batman and in Batman Returns, Michael Keaton seems more comfortable in the role. We get multiple villains in The Penguin and Max Schreck and a fabulous turn from Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. All in, I think this is the better of the two Tim Burton Batman movies and this one really works for me.
4
Die Hard (1988,  R)
Die Hard
The benchmark in action movies. It's got thrills, spills, heart, a wisecracking hero and a diabolical villain. This movie pulls off everything it does perfectly. One of my all-time favourite movies.
5
The Right Stuff (1983,  PG)
The Right Stuff
Exhilarating and brilliant story of the space race, taking us from the test pilots breaking the sound barrier and beyond to the Mercury astronaut programme. Excellent performances from Ed Harris, Scott Glenn, Fred Ward and Dennis Quaid but Sam Shepard is outstanding as Chuck Yeager and provides the film with a fitting coda after all the space hullabaloo is done with. The Right Stuff? Oh yes.
6
Pulp Fiction (1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
Still Tarantino's best film. Masterful interweaving of stories and characters with ultra cool dialogue and plenty of memorable scenes. You can switch this on at any point and know you're going to be watching a great bit.
7
Blade Runner (1982,  R)
Blade Runner
A stunning masterpiece of sci-fi noir. Visually spellbinding with similar attention to character and story. Quite possibly the best work done by all concerned.
8
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
Visually stunning, hyper-kinetic and extremely clever adapatation of Chuck Palaniuk's dark and nihilistic tale of modern man's materialism, emasculation and isolation in a society hijacked by marketing executives and new-age pseudo-spiritualists. First rate performances from Norton, Pitt and Bonham-Carter and a brilliant piece of film-making from David Fincher. Superb, my all-time favourite film.
9
Jaws (1975,  PG)
Jaws
Brilliantly suspenseful, lean, mean movie about 3 men and a shark. Scheider, Dreyfuss and Shaw are all outstanding, Spielberg directs superbly and makes a film better than the original book. John William's iconic theme adds to the sense of menace.
10
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997,  R)
Grosse Pointe Blank
Smart, hip, funny, great story and a killer soundtrack. Nice chemistry between John Cusack and Minnie Driver and a very funny turn from Joan Cusack. Even Dan Aykroyd's good in it for God's sake! This is my perfect 'date movie'.
