Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead - Unrated Again with the West Virginian hillbilly horror, this time focusing on a prison transport that is wrecked, leaving a group of prisoners and a guard to defend themselves against mutant killers while trying to escape.

It's got some really silly editing, some bad CGI, it's just more of the same.

I'd say waste your time if it's on cable and you're bored, otherwise, give this a pass.

Who is KK Downey? - Unrated This has a good amount of it's screen time that feels like a skit on an ensemble comedy show, but it's still amusing and fun. Two friends hatch a plan to make the abused male hustler drug addict protagonist of their novel a reality by having one of them assume his role in store appearances, only to have it all go to their heads as fame finds them.

Worth a rental if you run across it.

Swamp Women (Cruel Swamp) (Swamp Diamonds) - Unrated A really silly flick, directed on a shoestring by Corman, but the MST3K commentary saved it a bit, had a few good laughs.

As with most MST3K stuff, can't imagine watching without the commentary, as the film was pretty dreadful.

Rental of the Misty version.

Song of the Thin Man - Unrated Not as much fun as the others in the series, as you have diminishing returns with any movie franchise, but still an amusing romp nonetheless.

The Charles clan is drawn into a mystery after attending an event aboard a gambling ship and we get to see some more Nicky Jr. and Asta cuteness over the course of the film.

Worth a look, but doesn't quite measure up to the first handful of films.

The Thin Man Goes Home - Unrated The Charles' head to his hometown to relax, only to get caught up in a murder mystery (as is their custom), during which Nora desperately tries to impress on her father-in-law just how good her husband is as a detective.

They ditched the kid ("He's in kindergarten, we didn't want to take him out of school") in favor of giving us Nick and Nora sleuthing free of a diaper bag, but having Nick sober loses some of the character's flavor.

Worth a rental.

Rear Window - PG Gave this one another look this afternoon, it's just so much fun, the witty banter, the hottie across the way constantly dancing, Grace Kelly looking so elegant and lovely, what's not to love about this film?

Highly recommended.

Star Trek - PG-13 I wasn't sure what to expect with this re-boot of the classic franchise, but not being a particularly big Star Trek fan, I had no sacred cows going into this one and really enjoyed how Abrams put it all together.

I'm fully on board for a series of these films, the actors seemed to gel nicely, though I still can't get into Zachary Quinto's face, but I can stand him here since he's not saying the asinine Sylar-type dialog here.

Recommended.

The Objective - Unrated A group of Special Ops forces head into the Afghanistan deserts to investigate a strange radiation signature discovered by satellite photos taken post 9/11.

The reality of the foreign land slowly alienates the troops as they continue to encounter strange portents and unexplained lights that disappear into thin air, but while things are sufficiently unsettling, the film doesn't really feel all that satisfying by the time we get around to the anti-climax.

Maybe worth a rental, but director Myrick has done better in the past.

Observe and Report - R A really amusing dark comedy about a more than slightly unbalanced guy who ultimately finds a way to make it work for him, defying public expectation and what he thinks he wants out of his life.

I'd heard many mixed reviews, and I think the basic issue everyone had was that the movie doesn't fit into the typically harmless comedic trappings that one might expect.

Well worth a look, recommended.

Shadow of the Thin Man - Unrated This installment finds the happy couple back home and happily raising the now 5-yr old Nicky when a murder at the racetrack sends them after a killer yet again.

The couple is charming as always, the dog is cute, and I don't even have anything against the cute kid playing the son.

As with all the others in the series so far, recommended.

Another Thin Man (Return of the Thin Man) - Unrated Introducing the son of everyone's favorite sleuth couple, this film finds the family in the middle of yet another murder mystery.

Well worth a look folks, the chemistry is always wonderful and Nora becomes more involved in the case this time around.

After the Thin Man - Unrated In a terrific sequel to the original film, the Charles' arrive home in California and are immediately drawn into another mystery.

Well worth a look and maintains the snappy dialog and chemistry between our leads.

The Thin Man - Unrated Such a delightful experience, the rapid fire dialog, set design and costumes are worth the price of admission alone, but there's so much other stuff to recommend this one.

It's an amazingly fun film, Powell and Loy are a delight to watch, their clever & always loving banter never fails to make me smile.

Highly recommended.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - R While it's nothing revelatory, this was a pretty solid thriller, I enjoyed Denzel's everyman being picked at by Travolta's criminal mastermind in leather daddy drag, it was an interesting game of cat and also cat.

Travolta is in full-on scenery chewing mode here, which is fun to listen to, if a little disconcerting as he starts out relatively pleasant, then suddenly starts throwing around the 'motherfuckers!' rather casually.

Worth a rental for sure.

Gomorrah (Gomorra) - Unrated I really dug this one, a slow and methodical look at the lives of those in and around the criminal syndicate that apparently runs Naples.

While there were bits I could take or leave, it was interesting that the criminal world seems to drift into all walks of life, from the poor living in cramped tenements to those working the garment industry, all the way to the dangers faced by a lowly middleman type who goes around paying monthly stipends to those who have gang members in jail.

Well worth a rental.

Ein Toter hing im Netz (Horrors of Spider Island) - Unrated A really fun flick, but I can only imagine watching it with the MST3K commentary, as the source elements are amazingly piss-poor, from the plot to the acting to the cinematography, it's all a big pile of ass.

The saving grace is having a smart-ass and a couple of robots take jabs at it.

Rental of the MST3K version would be recommended.

Red Cliff (Chi Bi) - R John Woo knocks it out of the park with this sweeping historical epic. Sorry to go the lazy route and just throw that out to coin a phrase, but it's pretty much the only way to describe a film of this scope.

The visuals are gorgeous and Woo gives everyone their turn in the spotlight, each character has their own moment, no lead actor is left playing second fiddle to anyone else.

Well worth a look.

Flesh & Blood (Flesh+Blood) (The Rose and the Sword) - R Occasionally somewhat melodramatic and over the top in the acting, this medieval drama is surprisingly engaging, as it's hard to decide who the hell to really root for.

The mercenaries are the original wronged parties, betrayed by the Lord they'd worked for, but as they continue their raping and pillaging across the countryside it's hard to remain sympathetic to their cause at all.

An interesting watch to be sure, give it a rental.

Taken - PG-13 Just gave this another look because I wanted something I didn't have to really engage with, and boy does this fit the bill. A film much more fun than it really deserves to be, this is well worth at least a rental.

A fun and violent little no-nonsense revenge film in which a former spy tracks down the men who kidnapped his daughter and kills them.

A lot.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 This wasn't quite the abortion I was expecting after listening to numerous reviews, as I actually found things about it to like, but more often than not it is a bit shit, now isn't it?

Some of the worst CGI I've seen in a film not produced by Sci-Fi Channel, which is quite a statement.

Worth a rental I suppose, if you're curious.

Up - PG Not sure how I can love something that alternately makes me so sad and makes me laugh out loud as much as i loved this flick, but I this film gutted me and I love it for doing so.

This movie makes me appreciate my wife even more and want to make every day I have her in my life a special one.

A masterful film, highly recommended.

Un Conte de Noël (A Christmas Tale) - Unrated Okay, this was a blind buy on Criterion Blu-ray, and while I enjoyed it pretty well, whoever edited together the American trailer that IFC is responsible for deserves a shot to the balls for making this appear to be something of a lighthearted comedy, because I can assure you that's not the case.

The film does have strong performances and well drawn characters, but it's certainly not some sort of quirky comedy as portrayed in the trailer.

Give it a rental.

Sauna (Filth) - Unrated Creepy atmospherics and crisp visuals are what I'd recommend this film for, as it's never all that scary. It does manage to elicit some eerie moment here or there, but for the most part it's just about a couple of brothers and how redemption will eventually find them, whether they want it to or not.

Worth a rental.
