159
Dogville (2003,  R)
Dogville
DOGVILLE is a movie that really defies all convention.,just so unique, and i didn't see this movie style coming!brilliant filmaking by von trier, and anthony dod mantle(oscar winning D.O.P of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE,fyi).surely the best cinematography i've seen in long time! well,i know this is not for everyone (maybe many people will hate its style and its conclusion),but it gives me to thinks again about humanity, and the aspect of human nature as a whole.Damn great!
160
Chugyeogja (The Chaser) (2008,  Unrated)
Chugyeogja (The Chaser)
The Chaser kick ass!! after i'm enduring myself for so long with cheesy thriller from hollywood, the koreans save the day again! (at least for me). this is just, well,i;m not saying it is unpredictable, but when i watch this, there are times when i think "shit, this is just so not thriller-for-dummies by the book cliche hollywood often offers".i enjoy a movie where i had no idea what's gonna happen next, and this is one of it.if there's one letdown,it is the finale confrontation of the goodie and the baddie, which is the only cliche part in this movie, but fortunatelyl, the director take the step again with the final shot, which is sort of sad and leaves many intrepetation.surely the best thriller i've ever seen in years!
161
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) (1920,  Unrated)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
i rarely love silent movies.it's not that i hate them. i respect them.,its just,.for me,watching silent movies today, with the growth of technology and all, is just an irrelevant thing to do.i barely can sit through till the end.i can't get pass the first 20 minutes of chaplin movie.hell,i can't even get pass the first 5 minutes of metropolis.
but this, this is diferrent,.Dr. caligari is a horror movie that the silence and style just enhance the experience.the musics are haunting, the atmosphere is chilling, and the story, full of mystery!
162
Amadeus (1984,  R)
Amadeus
in mathematics, they said that, when negative meet negative, then the result is positive.well,it looks like that theory could also be implemented in films.Amadeus is the perfect example for me.this movie genre is biopic, and at the same time,a period drama.both is a genre that i don't quite liked.but AMADEUS,whoa, its blown me.it quite possibly the best biopic and also the best period drama that i've ever seen.just spectacular in every aspect..
163
Singin' in the Rain (1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
yeah right,a definite classic.this is a kind of movie that makes me smile all the time..and although the song is a tad old for my taste, but the coreography is just amazing (there's this one thing that feature one of the most amazing stunt in a movie i've ever seen by Donald O'Connor, which is in my opinion, the coolest sidekick ever!!)
164
The Player (1992,  R)
The Player
wow.,a masterpiece that i didn't see coming! first of all,i really not into robert altman.his previous movies that i watched (SHORTCUTS, GOSFORD PARK) is just an OK for me.secondly,.when talking about altman,it looks like that everybody has in mind is M.A.S.H,or nashville,or Mccabe and mrs miller.i don't recall hearing THE PLAYER that much.,well,i haven't yet to seen those three movies, but at least, this one is supposedly on par,.movie couldn't get better than this.this is a perfect thriller, and also a perfect satire about the hollywood system.,add in the great performance of tim robbins, playing as the most jerkest protagonist i've ever seen, this is truly a gem.and having a great tracking opening shot didn't hurt either.oh and it got Jeremy Piven pre-Ari Gold (in a movie about hollywood??haha, what a coincidence!)
165
Punch-Drunk Love (2002,  R)
Punch-Drunk Love
unconventional and beautifully shot romance movie.very refreshing ! PTA rocks(as always)!!
166
Breaking the Waves (1996,  R)
Breaking the Waves
Von trier hit the spot again !loves Emily Watson, loves Stellan Skarsgaard, loves the soundtrack, and loves the powerful and dogmatic ending !
167
Antichrist (2009,  Unrated)
Antichrist
James Berardinelli, one of my favorite film critics, can't decide whether to give this movie a 0 or 4 stars.well, after watching ANTICHRIST myself,i got the point. This is one of the most brilliant, and at the same time, the most pretentious filmaking i've ever seen.

the opening 5 minutes (the prologue,in which von trier tells it)is just beautiful. i've never been as captivated (at least, not since the opening of THE FALL) by the extraordinary cinematography (once again,Anthony Dod Mantle proves, that he and von trier is a match made in heaven).

But after the opening, here comes the pretentious side (which fortunately for ME,i find it rather Genius than pretentious). with a lot of disturbing scenes comes around, the slow moving paces of the revealing truth,.and (as usual) a 'more than meets the eyes' ending (i myself still can't find the meaning of that last shot, now please someone tell me!)

as much as it is von trier egotastic project, this is also Gainsbourg and Dafoe playground. there are no one else on screen(except for a brief scene that feature their son).and i'm glad that they really deliver.it is their performance that makes me goes to a rather favorable more than disgust it (and believe me,the line is very very thin)

so overall, regardless of all the controversy,i think antichrist is a pretentiousness at its most genius

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974,  PG)
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
again, another scorsese underrated gem.this, and that movie called after hours should be his classic, not that movie about a boxer,or some lunatic taxi driver,or a joe pesci-gone-mad-mafia-movie. maybe it's scorsese image of the maker of 'guy' movie that makes this movie gone overlooked by many.this is funny and inspiring !(at least for all the single mother out there, don't give up!).haha and i didn't realize there's Jodie Foster in this!

Il conformista (The Conformist) (1970,  R)
Il conformista (The Conformist)
since it is a bertolucci movie,it is no doubt has a beautiful cinematography.but what i like the most from THE CONFORMIST is not the beauty itself, but more of its unstructured narrative, which is a rarity on those days.this is a film that demand a second viewing.,and for good sake.,the script didn't give a simple A to B narrative.in fact, the movie rather very confused to watch, especially in the first hour.but, like trying to solve a puzzle, when the piece is done, then all its left is a feeling of satisfaction.,truly bertolucci masterpiece!

Chungking Express (1996,  PG-13)
Chungking Express
beautifully shot, beautifully told. this is cinema at its best ! the story of two intertwined men (played with such calamity by Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung) that try to cope with their heartbreak situation is highly romantic,in some sort of unique way,. have many great unique dialogues, and a superb soundtrack as well(the exception is the mandarin-language cranberries song,.haha)

Madeo (Mother) (2009,  Unrated)
Madeo (Mother)
if i am an academy voter,i will try my best to make this become one of the nominee of 2010 oscar for best foreign film. that statement just tells just how brilliant this movie is. This is comes as no surprise,as it comes from Boong Joon-ho (alongside Park Chan-wook and Kim Jee-won,the three lions of korea).

from the tone of the film,it is not much diferrent than his Memories of Murder. But if when i watching MoM the feeling is just like watching a Fincher's movie, well,in Mother,it is just refreshing.only by reading the premise,we know we're into something entirely different.A mother trying to solve a murder mystery to help his son getting away from jail?i'm in.

The highlight of Mother is,of course, the titular character herself, played mesmerizingly good by Kim Hye-ja (i also wanna take my money on her for best actress of 2010,by a long shot). Her elegant dancing in the beginning and ending of the film through some beautiful tango-ish music, is just enough to convince me to adore her character,no matter what act she did in the movie

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
well,i gotta to admit it:my love for this movie grows over time. at first viewing,i found it boring and out of context (i'm mildly disappointed and upset that this is not a story about a man under unusual circumstances, but more of a love story saga) ,.but to think of it again now,i just feels that this is a really wonderful film, both in technical and storytelling aspect..,Fincher really crafted his story with a such sophisticated hands, and don' forget that beautiful ending, and Cate Blanchett at her most "angelic" state.,Magnificent.

poignant.very very poignant..probably the closest CATCHER IN THE RYE adaptation i could get...

Harakiri (1964,  Unrated)
Harakiri
and my big question raise: how come Masaki Kobayashi become the lesser known japanese director, overshadowed by Kurosawa? only by seeing this truly epic masterpiece,i already fall in love with his great cinematography skills, and brilliant storytelling. Though i never get the idea of Harakiri itself, but i got to admit, this is a true timeless classic epic story.and that last finale?whoa.now i know where Tarantino Kill Bill The bride vs Crazy 88 inspiration comes from..

just like, the quieter version of American Beauty.,witty and great performance from all the cast !

(500) Days of Summer (2009,  PG-13)
(500) Days of Summer
after the traumatic experience that i had with a rom-com genre this year with He;s Just Not That Into You,Marc Webb gives something extraordinary antithesis:a wonderful romantic comedy that very refreshing and different. and by casting the one and only,ZOOEY DESCHANEL,only makes this film even greater. Love that expectation vs reality scenes, very funny, and yet at the same times, very sad

Days of Heaven (1978,  PG)
Days of Heaven
my favorite Malick movie to date ! i hope sometimes he will be back to tell a simple story like this, not an over the top, ambitious project. and that Carnival of the Animals-The Aquarium score, very effective !

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
this is probably the most divided of the series. some people call it boring, and not much action, other say its the most charming until now.,and i'm stepping into the latter category.

yes, this is it ! the best Harry Potter movie to date. The Empire Strikes Back of the Franchise.Really like david Yates approach, such as minimizing the action, throwing some clues, and adding some scenes.,now before watching this (and after watching the so-so 5th installment),i'm rather skeptical about he taking the directorial chair(for the third time!)for the last movie. but now,i support him 100 %

just can't wait till 2010..

Bakjwi (Thirst) (2009,  R)
Bakjwi (Thirst)
am i become too subjective,or Chan wook really is brilliant?? It's just, every work, and i mean, every work of his that i already seen is always great.and this one is no exception.Looks like he is my new Kubrick

This time,he moves forward from his revenge trilogy, and takes a vampire genre as his main palette.supported by his favorite actor,Song Kang-hoo (JSA,sympathy for mr vengeance) and an ex beauty pageant model Kim Ok-vin (which, her beauty, resemblance one of my favorite actress from my country) as a unusual couple of much complexities.

it is in this film, that Chan Wook shows all his touch into the screen (he himself told the media, that THIRST is his most accomplished film to date). there are violence, controversial image, wild romance, darkly humor, beautiful scenery, wonderful cinematography, you tell..

So,while not as great as his masterpiece, such as Oldboy,or JSA,but i thought this is still an above average vampire movie, thanks to that gifted hand of chan wook craftmanship

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003,  R)
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
in this movie,Kim Ki-duk proves that sometimes, dialogue isn't important in order to capture the poignant feelings and emotions.this is a "talk less do more" movie, and with a little dialogue on screen, really captured all the philosophy of life through the four seasons of circle of life (as the title suggest).
