Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
PG
Madagascar 2 is a bright, colorful, and well-animated kids movie. Its variety of different story lines and rapid-fire jokes are a noticeable upgrade over the original Madagascar, which I wasn't a particularly big fan of.
It follows the formula for this type of movie, so don't expect anything more than a light-hearted 90 minutes of pop-culture jokes with a tidy little ending to wrap everything up happily. Kids will sit still long enough to watch the whole movie, and adults will find a few laughs suitable for their age range, too. Everyone wins!
The Human Stain
R
I'm becoming a huge fan of Nicole Kidman. She's obviously a stunning woman, but fortunately she's also an excellent actress. She disappears into her roles and The Human Stain is the best display of her talents that I've seen so far. Kidman and the rest of the cast give perfect performances that augment a very interesting plot.
The Human Stain is essentially the story of two people's pasts and the events that still deeply affect their emotions and psyches. It takes a while before the entirety of the story is revealed, but if you're anything like me then you'll find yourself completely fascinated with each of the main characters by the end.
There are one or two scenes that come of as less than aunthentic, but these littlle missteps help to keep the story humming along, so I can't complain too much. I highly recommend The Human Stain, it's very well put together and even managed a few unexpected twists and turns.
Stuck
R
Does the fact that I genuinely enjoyed Stuck (and was slightly disappointed at who survived the end) make me a morbid person? Hopefully not.
Does the fact that I was openly rooting for Mena Suvari's character (and her horrible cornrows) the entire movie mean that I sometimes like my heroes to be not so heroic? Definitely.
Stuck won't appeal to everyone. It's full of gore and dark humor, and the ending is only happy in comparison to all the misery that comes before it. Are there people in this world that are really as selfish and unsympathetic as Brandi? I know that Stuck is supposedly based on a true story, but I prefer to keep thinking that these kinds of things can only happen in the movies.
If you're in the mood for a short, gory thriller, then there aren't many recent movies that are more entertaining than Stuck.
Live and Let Die
PG
Voodoo, heroin, airplane/car chases, racist southern police, snake attacks...this Bond film has it all. Well, the first ninety minutes is a Bond film, the rest is some weird, Dukes of Hazard/horror movie mixture. It's all thrown together in sort of a mishmash, and I never really knew what the movie was about, but that's what separates it from the better Bond films.
Roger Moore does a good job as Bond, but he doesn't contrast well with all the "pimpmobiles" and jive talk of Harlem. The villain was decent, nothing special. Jane Seymour on the other hand is simply delicious as a Bond Girl. I wish we could have seen much more of her (literally).
Overall, Live and Let Die is a memorable Bond film. Sadly, that's because of its American settings and disparate elements, not because of its quality.
The Royal Tenenbaums
R
An odd, occasionally amusing family drama about how easily a father can screw up his children or develop a great and loving relationship with them. The Royal Tenenbaums was enjoyable for me because it (somewhat) realistically presents how the bond between a parent and their children can drift between the two poles. Good stuff.
American Gangster
R
A reasonably good crime drama with stellar acting talent. No big twists or turns, but enjoyable throughout.

1.
Kill Bill: Volume 1
R
As close to a perfect action/martial arts movie as I've ever seen, with a fantastic soundtrack as a bonus! I honestly don't think that I could ever see it too many times.
2.
Million Dollar Baby
PG-13
There are a few movies that I like as much as this one, and only one that I like more. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out. This movie forms a connection between the characters and the audience in a way that makes you completely forget that you're watching a movie. That's the highest compliment that I can give.
3.
Kill Bill, Volume 2
R
Just as good as the Volume 1, but very different. The over the top action of Volume 1 takes a backseat to a revealing look at the tragedy of The Bride.
4.
The Lion King
G
Traditional Disney animation at its finest. Great music, breathtaking animation, and some of the best voice work ever bring this surprisingly mature story to life. An all-time classic.
5.
Sin City
R
Yes sir, I love me some Sin City. Each of the stories are incredibly interesting and are told flawlessly, the casting was absolutely perfect, and the visuals were simply amazing. I'm hoping that they can hit another homerun with Sin City 2!

Brilliant, and scary as hell. Gave zombie movies a much-needed kick in the pants.

Dances With Wolves is a loooong movie about a Lieutenant during the Civil War who goes to his position on the western frontier and finds it deserted. He befriends a wolf and tries to find things to do whilst he is alone. He meets a Native American tribe and falls in love with a white woman who was raised by the Indians. He becomes a part of the tribe and has compassion for the Sioux people. The white men do cruel things to the Indians, but the lieutenant is kind to them and tries to help them. Some great acting and a beautiful love story.
The Shawshank Redemption: Well, you like Morgan Freeman and you like movies with surprise twist endings and movies like The Village and The Prestige where clues are given along the way and you have to figure out the outcome but it's never the way you expected. You will definitely like Shawshank. You MUST see it. It is too good for words.
Ben-Hur: This is the greatest feat of Hollywood in the history of movie-making. It won ELEVEN academy awards, it has he best action scene ever without special effects because the stunts are REAL and amazing. It has the biggest cast ever, the most costumes, the grandest sets, I'm not kidding... this movie not only has a powerful scripts and superb acting, it is one of the greatest movies of all time.
The Family Man: This movie is all about important life choices and the decision one man made that changed his life forever. One morning, our main man wakes up and discovers that his life is completely different. He gets a glimpse of what his life COULD HAVE BEEN if he had only made a different choice. It's a warm, heartfelt family movie. If you liked It's a Wonderful Life, you will like this one.posted 10 days ago -
The Neverending Story: A fantasy fairy tale all about imagination and where it can take you. A young boy opens a book and finds that it writes itself as he reads. He doesn't know it yet, but he chooses what will happen because everything depends on him... he is the reader. He doesn't know how important he is to the story, and he finds out in the end that he is part of it. I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid and fall asleep and dream that I was the reader and could create my own fairy land with my own rules. The Auryn is the coolest prop ever in a movie. It has the power to give the wearer unlimited wishes. I read the book from which this movie was adapted and it's amazing. You liked

I just saw Camille two nights and I adored it. If you don't like old sappy black and white romance films, don't see it. Check out my "favorite movies" list and ask me about one you haven't seen. I'll tell you all about it! I'm excited that you're expanding your horizons and that you're asking for my taste!!! :0) Makes me happy!

I completely agree with your review of The Happening. It had SUCH POTENTIAL because of M. Night Shyamalan and the cast... but it was weak. Very weak. I also agree with what you said about Lady in the Water.
