Der Baader Meinhof Komplex
by JensThe true story of terror attacks in Germany of the 1960s and 70s, performed by left extremists of the Red Army Fraction. While the movie is already two and a half hours long, it would have needed even another hour to deliver the background for people not familiar with this part of Germany's history. Especially the end comes rather suddenly and should have some explanations added for foreign audiences. That being said, the film does a great job in bringing this time back to life by rushing through the most important events in a really exciting and interesting way, following the most important characters on both sides of the law. The cast reads like a who is who of current German cinema, the performances are all around great, especially by Moritz Bleibtreu as terrorist leader Andreas Baader. By using montages with original news footage and music, delivering some of the strongest scenes, the film manages to sum up the mood, thread, ideas and emotions involved at that time really well. It just shows what happened, without judging or taking either the terrorists' or the law's side. A great history lesson, but probably hard to consume without some more background information.
Hey, you should really see this if you are interested in recent German history. While it surely works as a political action thriller, it might require some more knowledge of German and world politics of the 1960s and 70s to be fully understood and appreciated.

Blindness
by BillNote: this review may contain spoilers... but read on anyway so you won't have to endure this piece of crap
"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king..."
- blind dude in Minority Report.
Taking Anderton's drug dealer into consideration here, his quote up there about the one-eyed man being king of the blind sounds more believable than this crap... I mean, Holy shit, this movie is fucked up. And I thought the scene with the Armageddon fan taking shots rolling off some hairy dude's ass was borderlining porn, but this is sadism! But that comes in about 2/3 of the way into the film... be forewarned.
Three things in this movie make me question the director's/author's intents: one, the ending; the other, a character who was already blind before the fucked up events take place. Lastly, the quarantined area. My question for the ending is... why the hell did the events of this film even take place? The question for the second part is simply: WHY?! Y'know, like how George Carlin mentions a "news headline" about a guy breaking into an old lady's home, stealing things, then proceeds to raping the woman -- it doesn't make sense is what I'm getting at. And the last question: why the fuck is there even a quarantined area if the rest of the world is going blind? 28 Weeks Later and even some of Romero's Dead movies had better plans of creating a safe zone for the uninfected. In the case of Blindness, given how the people with vision don't give a shit for the blind (prejudices), I don't see why they're wasting their time. They know the potential infection is widespread, hence the quarantined areas, but since they fear the infection, wouldn't they have the sense to barricade themselves in their own sanctuary and not come into contact with the "infection?" There was a scene later in the film about how heavy traffic collisions made everyone else stay in their homes... yet, everyone's still fucking around with quarantining the blind.
The bulk of the film's central theme/thesis is how humanity is one step away from complete anarchy, and what we are presented is the murky atmosphere of humanity's worst, taking place all within a *ahem* quarantined area. One tiny area where maybe less than 100 blind people reside... somehow, this applies on a global scale, but we don't see that. Maybe it's global, maybe it isn't, but I assume it is considering how electricity, running water, and TV/radio communications are virtually nonexistant over time. Oh, and since society has crumbled due to blindness, they must restart from scratch, and that's how the movie plays out within a quarantined area containing the most steretypical of victims (kid with eye glasses, woman needing to wear sunglasses, an eye doctor and his wife, a guy with an eyepatch, a dude who was already blind to begin with... could they be more cliche??). It makes me wonder if the book is any better... but hey, if it has that quarantined area, then I can safely say the book must be just as bad (it's been compared to Lord of the Flies... it's probably best to read that book instead).
I think the real question remains... okay, we all saw Anderton's run-in with his blind drug dealer in Minority Report, and lemme reiterate his quote once again: "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." The one-eyed man here is Julianne Moore, but for one, she has both eyes with perfect vision (and two, she's a woman.) I can't understand for a second why she'd continue to go along with the sadistic blind gang's orders (the gang is Ward 3, run by the King of Ward 3, played by Gael Garcia Bernal)... she constantly pretends to be blind, just to be with her husband, played by Mark Ruffalo. That's understandable (aww)... but the woman never lifts a finger when she and groups of other people are being bullied by the King of Ward 3 simply because he has a gun. Where'd he get that gun in the first place?? And why does everyone fear him so? Did they forget that he, along with everybody else (except Julianne Moore), are BLIND?! Sure, he says he'll just shoot straight maniacally, but one lil' revolver against a hundred people? They could easily mob-rush the bastard, and with luck take away his gun... better yet, Miss Moore could've walked over there and taken it straight outta his hands but nooooooo, she wants to remain hush-hush about seeing.
We have a woman who can see, but she never lifts a finger until after the worst has happened: the most brutal portrayal of rape ever depicted on-screen since De Niro and McGovern in Once Upon a Time in America, but that one had a legit reason. In this film, it's done out of desperation and survival... Ward 3 has the food, people are starving and since they have no more jewelry to give up (see the absurdity?), the women must sacrifice their bodies. C'mon, Cillian Murphy in 28 Days Later was ballsy enough to prevent those two girls from getting raped, why couldn't Julianne Moore have done the same?! That whole scene could have been prevented! I wonder what the blind people would've thought the second they knew Miss Moore can see yet somehow, they couldn't connect the dots. Tsk tsk. If someone had brought that up, like saying, "What the fuck?? You can see?!"... and go from there, then maybe I wouldn't be ranting as much.
And this occured to me on my morning drive... there's a scene involving fire. My question is: how the hell was that blind gal able to start that fire?! It's almost as if she knew precisely where there'd be a flammable substance... yeah yeah, they've got blankets and other fabrics that could easily start a fire. But she was walking over to Ward 3, a place that is guarded by bars and two blind dudes, one using a stick to determine any difference in echo/sound, and the other holding a gun, and there's a bar serving as a barracade. She wanted to start the fire there, she wanted to let the mother fuckers burn... but to know exactly where and how? Maybe she's got good memory, I dunno, but the way it suddenly came outta nowhere made me question how it was possible to pull off. It's almost as if she got her vision back... but she was still staring blankly and feeling around. I dunno... maybe I missed something, or I'm looking too deep into it. :p
The stupidity of this film and its central characters and its plot contrivances and ending (ugh, that fuckin' ending)... yeah yeah, it's suposed to show the fragility of humanity/society, but having a few things that contradict itself really runs this film into the smeared fecal matter on the floor and walls. I have respect for Fernando Meirelles since City of God is a bonafide masterpiece, and The Constant Gardener is right up there, but he should've passed this one over. The author of the book this film is based on should've kept the rights to himself... and he was doing okay all by his lonesome. After all, it was an offensive piece to begin with. ^_^
Dig out your copy of Children of Men instead. Or even 28 Days/Weeks Later or even a handful of Romero's Dead movies. I know the director and author don't want their work to be mentioned in the horror category, but this is an epic fail of a film wanting to be more than it actually is (like Funny Games from earlier this year). Blindness intends to be some kind of indie-intellectual piece, but since the opening credits include these words: "A very independent [picture/production, whatever]", I think Meirelles was actually going for a B-movie because I kinda snickered when I read that. Perhaps if we look at Blindness as a B-grade/horror/grindhouse movie, then maybe this Halloween, you can have a look at this year's top of the horrorfest. Heck, Blindness and Quarantine could be this week's double-bill!
^_^
Oh, you know what the best part of all this is? I didn't pay to see this movie! That, and Julianne Moore... fuck you naysayers, she's frickin' HOT (and talented, mind you)!
Oh man, that just reminds me of two other actresses: Naomi Watts and Diane Lane. Is it me, or has three incredibly talented (and hot) actresses wasted their talents on such garbage? First, it was Diane Lane with Untraceable... then it was Naomi Watts with Funny Games... and now poor Julianne Moore with Blindness. The funny thing is that all three films tried to be something more than they appear; films with a deep underlying message/cautionary tale... pfft, haha.
Anyway, the movie sucks, and just 'cause Fernando Meirelles directed this doesn't mean you HAVE to like it. :pHey, you really should NOT see this! Huge disappointment from Fernando Meirelles... :(

In Bruges
by SerdarMartin McDonagh writes and directs his first movie and the man has skills for both. This is a very good dark comedy, with great dialogs, good acting and direction. The city is surely one of the lead actors here and a good one. The movie will definitely make you want to see Brugges.
Colin Farrell.. Well, I used to find him irritating, used to think that he got to be an actor because he could make his eyebrows like that. Two clumsy murderer roles (here and in Cassandra's Dream) changed my mind. Still not a big fan but now I can stand him.
"Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like TOTTENHAM." Hilarious!! Well it looks like they are going to hell this year!.Hey, you should really see this!

Eagle Eye
by JasonThis movie makes me fear writting this review. I don't know who's out there watching me and coming up with ways to make my life miserable. Oh and fillings are actually radio transmitters. It's a huge conspiracy I tell you.
Okay so this movie is not exactly a conspiracy theory themed adventure but the essence is felt. Imagine one day getting a call and saying you have to do something otherwise you or someone you love may die. Yeah at first you would think it is a joke but then you realize the voice on the other end means business. Next thing you know you are in over your head and the no matter the outcome you may still perish.
Although rather intriguing, I found a few different ways to end the threat or hide from it before it got out of hand and thus saving the world sooner. I suppose the screenwriters need to extend the film by about 50 minutes, otherwise it would be considered a short, anf there goes Best Picture nominee odds. Well actually this one probably won't even be a candidate anyways.
This is your basic decent post-summer filler. Not great, not bad and not a lot of movie goers. Shia Labeouf was just brought on board to attract a movie audience. None of the remain cast really have as larger a fan base. Let's be real without Shia this movie would have been overlooked and would have been out on DVD a few weeks after its' theatrical release.
This movie is a good way to fill the void on a fall afternoon. It brings on found memories of the excting summer film season and the upcoming holiday blitz. I recommend this film, but am not pushing anyone to actually see it.Hey, you should really see this!
