2012
PG-13
2012 is definitely the best Blockbuster film of the year. I think everyone knows the plot by now; the World is going to end on 21.12.12. The world Governments formulate a plan to try and continue humanity after the predicted global catastrophes; of course this is not easy.
The cast was excellent; there are many moments, although typically Hollywood, that pull on the heart strings. The attention to detail was phenomenal; it really portrayed how I believed the Governments of the World would react to global disasters. Protecting the Art, Animals and the Billionaires of Earth, before the population.
I could really easily go watch this again, and although it will not be one of the top three films of the year for me: (currently Inglourious Basterds, The Wrestler and Star Trek), it is definitely one of the top ten films of the year.
However it will not be for everyone. It is predictable, and the looking at his previous films (Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, Godzilla, The Patriot, 10,000 BC) we can tell the film is going to be an epic, CGI based explosion of ridiculousness. It is clever in its use of story, but the plot is a bit scrappy and desperate (I think Emmerich just wanted to destroy as many landmarks as possible), and it is very long at 2 and a half hours... But don't let these minors put you off watching this film; it is thought provoking and raises many issues; while also supplying a fun adventure film, with possible a bit too much American hope and romance thrown in.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
PG-13
A fairly decent follow-up to the original Transformers. The story continues from where the last left off; and this is where the plot wavers. As a solo film it would have been excellent, but as a sequel to a better film, the plot seems weaker. However the visual effects, fantastic cast and brilliant acting, coupled with two and a half hours of constant fiery, robot smashing explosions, all out western styled gun fights (using missiles of course), makes this films one of the blockbusters of the year.

Jurassic Park
PG-13
Jurassic Park; Michael Crichton's infamous book turned into the the blockbuster defining, CGI creating, Steven Spielberg mega movie. The book pre-dates the film by just a year or so, after Spielberg and Crichton met and decided to create this landmark film. The film is so special because with out it, modern CGI would not have been created. Spielberg and his SFX team formed technology that has revolutionised the industry. Everyone knows the premise, but what made this film more than a story was the superb believable casts acting, and the plot which has basically foreseen the future (the ability to grow and clone animals). Personally this is my favourite film of all time, and definitely one of Spielberg's best (this list of Spielberg's films is crazily amazing). This film is a must see!
