Love Actually
Richard Curtis is the BEST comedy writer!

GREAT movie, awesome cast!

American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty
Saw it two times on the big screen.
BEST BLACK COMEDY EVER!!!

SEE IT !!!!!!
Definitely worth all the oscars...
3
Snow Cake (2006,  Unrated)
Snow Cake
Where is that oscar?? What a super great movie!! Did one of you ever remember having left the theatre with a smile on your face after seeing a movie where a young woman is killed in a car accident? Well, I kept smiling during the entire movie, I was glad because this movie is showing life as it really is. People who meet new people as a result of a common tragedy. Developing friendship, learning to understand. I swear I will never watch the oscars ever again if this movie (or one of the actors) is not receiving an oscar!
4
Festen (The Celebration) (1998,  R)
Festen (The Celebration)
When you see it the first time it may be very shocking, so BE WARNED! But I've seen this movie a hundred times and still I'm enjoying every minute of it. In my opinion the best Danish movie ever made, and that is a surprise since it is not directed by the insane genius Lars von Trier, although it is part of von Trier's Dogme series! Thomas Vinterberg did a fabulous job! The entire cast in fact! Endlessly brilliant!!!
5
Fargo (1996,  R)
Fargo
I have seen this movie so many times and it never bores me. A true terrifying thriller and an awesome prestation of actors Peter Stormare, Steve Buscemi, William H. Macy & Frances McDormand. Every time I watch it I get goose pimples and it goes straight into my heart.
6
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992,  R)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
I AM TRULY IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE! This is by far the best horror movie I saw in my entire life. Nothing in this movie can improve, everything here is perfect. Gary Oldman in his best role ever, Winona Ryder & Sadie Frost give brilliant performances and Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins & Tom Waits are great supporting actors. The soundtrack of this movie is the best one I've ever heard. See it and you'll love this version! AND BE AWARE THAT LOVE NEVER DIES!
7
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006,  R)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Best movie of 2006! All thanks to the brilliant story of German writer Patrick Süskind! This movie doesn't need Hoffman or Rickman to be a success, but it certainly is an asset!
I'm very impressed by the performance of Ben Whishaw. He had not many lines but his acting was beyond perfection. He had help from director Tom Tykwer, who chose the right music and sound effects.
I read the general bad critics about this movie, and I conclude that I don't understand the critics when they write that " This movie is not so convincing because Tykwer does not succeed in making the viewer feel the world of scents..." Well to me this is bullshit. When I read the book I did not smell the perfumes either.
The greatness of the film is that the sarcasm, with which this story was written, was interpreted extremely well by the cast. The emotions were there and the movie had a terrific scenery and beautiful costumes, next to the incredible story and a convincing cast!
This is truly a GREAT movie. Must put it under "My favourite movies" immediately!

Mifune (2000,  R)
Mifune
Seen this movie tons of times since it has been in my movie collection for several years. Today I watched it for the first time with Danish subtitles, the movie is spoken in the Danish language.
It is the most wonderful love story you can imagine. The performance of Jesper Asholt who played the elder mentally disabled brother Rud is just beyond brilliance. His character is funny, soft, sweet and serious at the same time. He received two awards for this role, totally deserved.
The story itself is a very beautiful one. It never goes down to the Hollywood level of romantic comedies. Why not? Because this is a Danish movie made according to the Dogme certificate, which was signed by a bunch of skilled Danish directors. The director of this masterpiece is Søren Kragh-Jacobsen.
As you can see is the first Dogme movie Festen on number 4 of my all time favourite movies. This one is definitely into the top 10.
9
The Pianist (2002,  R)
The Pianist
Even better made than "Schindler's List"!
10
The Search for John Gissing (2001,  Unrated)
The Search for John Gissing
We all had to wait a few years to see this DVD released but apparantly it's time now... finally!!! Thanks to Mike Binder...and all of you who signed this petition!

Much credit for this movie goes to Mike Binder who is not only a brilliant actor in this film but has also written and directed it! Waaaw Mike, he is super!

Furthermore my appreciation for the best actor in the world, Alan Rickman, because as good as he may be playing evil characters, he's even better as a comedian! Actually, Alan is an unbeatable comedian.

See it and enjoy a good laugh!
11
Pulp Fiction (1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
Quentin Tarantino's humor is so sick it's definitely the best humour ever been shown in a movie! I absolutely love him! Maximum stars for this one. The soundtrack is brilliant as well...
12
Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
Not like any war movie I have ever seen!!
13
The Shining (1980,  R)
The Shining
There will never be made any better horror movie than this one! For sure! This movie is awfully CREEPY. I've seen it at least 10 times, watched it today again, and it is still as creepy as the first time. That's because of the SCARY soundtrack during the entire movie and the incomparable acting abilities of Jack Nicholson, who is even more creepy than the background sound.
The story is not entirely the same as the one Stephen King wrote down, but I like this Kubrick adaptation much better than the story in the book!
Amazing horror flick.
Five stars is not enough.
14
The War of the Roses (1989,  R)
The War of the Roses
This movie never gets boring, not even after seeing it a dozen of times. In my opinion the best work that Danny de Vito, Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas ever did together.
15
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975,  R)
16
De Zaak Alzheimer (The Memory of a Killer) (The Alzheimer Case) (2005,  R)
De Zaak Alzheimer (The Memory of a Killer) (The Alzheimer Case)
Belgium's best thriller ever based on a novel by flemish writer Jef Geeraerts.
Same class as the best stuff in Hollywood and better than the majority of Hollywood flicks nowadays.
Jan Decleir rules!!
17
The Green Mile (1999,  R)
The Green Mile
Best Stephen-King-book-turned-into-movie-script I have seen so far. All the actors make a deep impression on me and I discovered lovely Sam Rockwell in this one!
18
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004,  Unrated)
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers
BRILLIANT performance of Geoffrey Rush as Peter Sellers. The movie is a sensation from the beginning until the end. Never boring.
Moreover the movie is interesting to watch because of the original scene changes... I recommend it to everyone!
19
Roger & Me (1989,  R)
Roger & Me
Michael Moore tries to talk to Roger Smith (president of General Motors during the 80ies, a company based in Flint, MI, hometown of Moore) and asks him if he wants to join him for a visit to Flint, to spend one day with the unemployed formerly GM workers. MM says "USA is the only western country that tells the unemployed to fuck off." In Europe there's social security for the disabled or unemployed. Better than in this film where a woman sells rabbits, as pets or as meat, to avoid starving. We see people being evicted from their homes on X-mas, while Roger Smith is giving his yearly (hypocritical) X-mas speech. MM says: "By laying off people you get less consumers and eventually lose on it". Pat Boone sings at the end: "I'm proud to be an American". RS certainly shouldn't be proud to be an American. MM asked the film company for a deal, which the company kept: to show the movie for free to every unemployed and to pay the rent and mortgages during 2 years of all the people shown in this movie while being evicted. The aim of the movie was in fact to raise the spirits of the umemployed Flint people. THIS FILM SHOULD BE SEEN AND TOLD!
20
Der Name der Rose (The Name of the Rose) (1986,  R)
Der Name der Rose (The Name of the Rose)
One of the best thrillers I have ever seen! Brilliant performances of all actors involved, suspense and witty dialogues... Never boring!
21
Sid & Nancy (1986,  R)
Sid & Nancy
Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious "performing" Frank Sinatra's "My Way". That is truly one of the best scenes I have ever seen in a movie, absolutely brilliant. Gary is super, but then again, I believe he was a teenager in London in the late seventies if I'm not mistaken, so who else could have performed Sid Vicious better than Gary Oldman?
I absolutely LOVED that soundtrack!
22
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Brilliant comedy! Full of sarcasm and actually I think that Peter Sellers is a genius. Nevertheless George C. Scott made me laugh a lot too and so did Slim Pickens, sitting and screaming on his flying bomb! :-))
But Peter Sellers did it. I heard he just improvised most of the conversations, that's just terrific.
Maybe this is THE best Kubrick movie, but that is a though one to decide after all.
23
A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
Sarcastic. Awfully funny. Awesome music score.
Narrated by Malcolm McDowell, the choice of vocabulary is REALLY exceptional!
Brilliant movie. See it! Enjoy it...
24
The Silence of the Lambs (1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
One of the best thrillers ever made! Fascinating, even though I know what's happening after having watched it several times, I still watch it with much interest.
By far Anthony Hopkins' best performance!
Jodie Foster is sweet in her role as Clarice, but still she is though, she doesn't get intimidated. I like that very much.
I'd love to read that book.
25
La Vie en Rose (La Mome) (2007,  PG-13)
La Vie en Rose (La Mome)
I have actually no words that can describe how I felt after I was leaving the theatre! This movie is a masterpiece full of emotions. And that voice of Edith! Endlessly beautiful. I wish I could have heard her singing live.
The movie itself may have been a bit better with less flash backs and flash forwards! But the end was grandiose! Five stars are certainly not enough for this movie and this lady!
26
Scream (1996,  R)
Scream
Definitely one of the best thrillers I've seen in my life. The first time in theatre I remember I was really scared.
What a pity that Drew Barrymore chose to play Casey instead of Sidney! I would have preferred Drew for the main part.
Some funny parts in this film and a good plot without holes. Very well-written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Wes Craven. Good job!
27
Billy Elliot (2000,  R)
Billy Elliot
Bingo! About this movie I can not find anything wrong! The story is touching, it has humour, a fabulous sound track (if you're a T-Rex fan), a brilliant young newcomer actor in Jamie Bell. I love the northern English accent and the 80ies are special to me. Of course I was not brought up in Northern England myself but I remember the Iron Lady very well (and all the misery she caused)... And Julie Walters is just amazing!
28
The Simpsons Movie (2007,  PG-13)
The Simpsons Movie
Definitely worth seeing if you're into The Simpsons. It's just hilarious from start to end! And if you see it sit in your seat until the very very end, yes, read all the names on the screen. It's worth waiting...
29
Babel (2006,  R)
Babel
I am at a loss to know what to write... All I can tell is that this movie was AMAZING! It hurts, it is so real, and it shows a lot of daily problems such as illegal immigration, children and weapons, drugs and sexual frustration among teenagers and the overall terrorist panic from the West for the Arabic world...
All of this pressed into one solid script. AWESOME movie!
30
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
This is a great movie with an original script. The viewer is confronted with a series of facts which leads to the death of the main character. And you wonder why she is dead already after only 20 minutes or so. But then the viewer sees the same series of scenes over again but now with minor differences leading to the death of the second main character. Then the same scenery all over again, a third version of the script.
If you like watching MTV then you may like the way this movie is made. The viewer is dragged into an MTV-alike video clip, which even includes the main character as a cartoon, including background music with a steady beat. I do not know which artist but it sounds like something similar to Moby.
I could not believe that the very same director Tom Tykwer made the german book "Perfume" into a movie!
This film is totally different!
31
Nattevagten (Nightwatch) (1994,  R)
Nattevagten (Nightwatch)
This movie is a very exciting thriller with a great plot! This danish story is about a student who takes a night job at the morgue to finance his studies. There he enters a very scary web of murder and ... worse!
This movie was released in Denmark with an all danish cast in 1994 and was directed by danish director Ole Bornedal. Four years later this same director made a new american version with american actors. This movie called NIGHTWATCH can be found here!

Once again, this is NOT the russian movie!
32
Bloody Sunday (2002,  R)
Bloody Sunday
Filmed like it is a news flash or a documentary, with moving cameras, so that the viewer seems to be in the middle of the chaotic events.

Watch history...

and judge for yourself !
33
An Inconvenient Truth (2006,  PG)
An Inconvenient Truth
This movie opened my eyes and made me an even bigger George W. Bush hater!

Al Gore for president.... AGAIN!
34
A Fish Called Wanda (1988,  R)
A Fish Called Wanda
Great movie from John Cleese, my hero as a child. I LOVED this movie back then and I still love it. I have seen it so many times and it still is funny. What a great double DVD with a lot of extra features on it!
35
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
I was a little bit confused when the girl's fairytale begun but in the end I thought that this was one of the best World War II movies I've seen. A little change: no German but Spanish fascists, the behaviour is the same of course but it was something else anyway. And the victims were not jews but Spanish farmers in this case.
The rest was bloody serious and touched the heart, like any WWII movie does to me.
Brilliant cast as well! Best Spanish movie I've seen so far.
36
Sicko (2007,  PG-13)
Sicko
Half a star less than maximum for the pretty little lies about France. All right, he was pretty close to the truth! Again, as always after watching a Michael Moore documentary, I am PROUD to be a European! Okay we have done pretty bad things in history to innocent people but we try the best not to harm today's people, both within and outside our own European country! And yes, I'm also happy because I have been treated for diabetes type 1 and never had to pay anything for the insuline, except once, when I was out of my country and had no travel insurance documents prepared. Yes, also here in Europe you can in fact lose a bit of money when not prepared before travelling! But the American situation? Hell no! Never!
I was really happy to see the part about Cuba. Not until today I was aware that there seems to be good health care in a country I thought was quite poor!
I hope someone will vote for Hillary Clinton, that is, only if she is prepared to take up that health insurance issue again!
37
The 11th Hour (2007,  PG)
The 11th Hour
This movie has the same goal as An Inconvenient Truth, to open our eyes to the environmental crisis we are dealing with. Even more than in Al Gore's movie the connection between the destruction of our globe and the increase of common diseases such as diabetes, asthma and cancer is explained. This explanation should really open our eyes because those diseases are affecting many of us (including myself). That these diseases can be reduced in connection with saving the earth from the global warming is something that isn't really clear to many. I didn't really think about it either before I saw the movie. This movie contains a lot of interviews with scientists such as Stephen Hawking and comes to the conclusion that there is a need of mentality change before the earth can be saved. A mentality change means that we have to see nature no longer as our property but as a living creature, which has rights. It sounds logic to me because nature LIVES, nature is not dead so it can never be a property. But that is the heart of the problem. People exploit nature and since the industrial revolution nobody ever asked questions.
As far as I understand the situation is hopeless since I cannot see the mentality of six billion people change withing ten years or so. Certainly not that of political leaders and capitalist leaders of big petrol and car industries, among others.
I wonder if the pretty face of Leo DiCaprio really helps?
Yes I am negative, we are doomed. See this movie anyway and make your own decision.
38
Cold Comfort Farm (1996,  PG)
Cold Comfort Farm
This is a wonderful movie, there's not a moment of sadness in it. And it's filled with humour.
I have lived in a similar farm myself in northern Sweden for a few years, where time stood still and people were conservative and gloomy and most sons were single. Unfortunately for me my impact on that farm wasn't as successful as Miss Poste's, so I left the farm at last.
I must say I love this fairytale farm story more than my real-life experience!
39
Across the Universe (2007,  PG-13)
Across the Universe
Probably the best soundtrack I have ever heard in a movie! I had the feeling I was watching a very long Peter Gabriel music video seeing all these special effects and colours! But it was a good way to show the doped hippie generation. Jim Sturgess was perfect in the main role, as he has the looks of a very young Paul McCartney. The entire cast in fact had beautiful voices and you certainly don't want to miss the appearance of a hippie Joe Cocker! Great movie!
40
Elizabeth (1998,  R)
Elizabeth
One fantastic costume drama, one of the best I've ever seen. Such a good acting, lovely medieval music score, very well-directed piece of art.
41
Grizzly Man (2005,  R)
Grizzly Man
Amazing!!!!!!! I didn't know about this guy until a Flixster friend recommended me this docu last week.
It touched me like no other work ever did. The docu shows the madness and obsession of this man. He didn't like humans (he loathed most of us). I do not share that with him but I do share the love for animals although I would be too afraid to come close to an unprotected bear. Like him I keep saying "I love you" to my cats a few times a day, brushing their fur, kissing their wet nose and listening to their purring. Timothy Treadwell did that to "his" foxes. I felt horrible when hunters threw stones at his lovely friend! It must have broken his heart!
At some point in the movie we hear that Treadwell started to drink alcohol before he started his mission. During his own shoots he still screams his loathing into the camera lens, so wildly that director Werner Herzog talked through most of it. Indeed Treadwell must have been a dangerous creature when being drunk seeing his temper when he was sober!
But I still like the man because his heart is with the animals, it was in the right place and my heart did hurt while watching this docu.
Rest In Peace Timothy Treadwell & friend.
42
An American Crime (2007,  R)
An American Crime
What a movie, it went through heart and soul. Ellen Page is so good, how she can play such a scared person, unbelievable. She did it perfect. Nothing bad about the rest of the cast. Why did Ellen Page not get an Oscar nomination for this movie?
43
Hable con Ella (Talk to Her) (2002,  R)
Hable con Ella (Talk to Her)
Oh what a GREAT movie!! This is SO beautiful. So much love, it feels to me that not every rapist does rape because he's evil. This story was real sad but so pure. And great shootings.
I also liked the silent film because to me it was meant to explain what Benigno's intentions were! Great imagery language.
Pedro Almodóvar seems so bright to me! What a man!
AN ABSOLUTE MUST-SEE!
44
The Magdalene Sisters (2003,  R)
The Magdalene Sisters
Emotional drama about young innocent catholic girls who have been forced to spend the rest of their lives in an institute lead by severe nuns. This is one of those stories - based on true happenings in Ireland - which go straight through the heart. Geraldine McEwan again shows her superior acting talent. A must see movie!
45
Cool Runnings (1993,  PG)
Cool Runnings
This colourful movie has no weaknesses. It made me laugh from the beginning until the end and then I realized that it is based on a true story. Almost unbelievable. So lovely!
Ya Man!
46
Gandhi (1982,  PG)
Gandhi
Ben Kingsley is beyond brilliant here. I can not remember a 3-hours long movie that went by so fast. Moreover I was tired but the story just grips you by the throat and you can't stop watching. At least I couldn't.
47
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) (2008,  PG-13)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)
This is by far the best WWII movie I have ever watched. And I thought there would not be made a better movie than The Pianist, but here it is!
It is so good because in this flick a nazi general is confronted very personally with his own cruelty towards jews. What his reaction to the drama is we are not allowed to see but there are only two possibilities: either he breaks with nazi Germany and leaves the country for Switzerland (which was not possible since it was considered treachery) or he hates the jews even more, which was probably the case. One thing is certain: after this tragedy the nazi family is trapped into its own system forever.
One tiny negative thing is that this movie should have been done with German actors instead of British to make the movie completely realistic. It's weird to hear a nazi general speak British English. Pity for this very good movie.
Asa Butterfield & Jack Scanlon make a brilliant performance!
There will probably not be made any better nazi movie than this one. See it.
48
Loft (2008,  Unrated)
Loft
Director Erik Van Looy and script writer Bart De Pauw have done the best job in their careers so far, if you ask me. This crime thriller is a great whodunnit. Exciting until the very end and with a twisted plot. Movie contains a lot of flash-backs.
A recommendation for the Dutch-speaking Flixster users but if you can find the DVD release with subtitles in 2009 do not hesitate to watch! It's a Flemish masterpiece.
49
Rasputin (1996,  R)
Rasputin
For those who haven't seen the movie that earned Alan Rickman a Golden Globe and Emmy award and Ian McKellen a Golden Globe as well, it is one of those movies where the actor doesn't play the character but where the actor is the character. A very interesting and emotional performance. Add to this a brilliant Ian McKellen as the Tsar and you have the perfect British actor pair in an absolutely fabulous based-on-a-true story flick!
Alan Rickman as Rasputin... Anything more interesting to watch on DVD does not exist!!
A must see movie.
The only DVD version left is the region 2 Dutch version (English spoken of course). There are a few shops where it is available but I bought my copy here. (Click to see the link)
50
Eight Below (2006,  PG)
Eight Below
Buckets of tears I cried while watching this movie!
As a dedicated pet owner I felt so bad for the protagonist Jerry. I could easily identify myself with him.
A big praise goes to the dog trainers who made this movie possible and the 16 sweet beautiful husky dogs that were featured in this flick. Blue-eyed angels they are. Even my lovely cat Sirius moved his ears in curiosity while lying next to the screen and hearing these dogs talking. Wonderful animals. I love you all.
Must see for ALL people who love pets more than humans, just as myself.
51
The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
The book was more detailed than the movie and therefore I had the impression I watched this movie while sitting in a race car. There was not enough time to show the rich contents of the book on the screen. But if you haven't read this great book I can still recommend this movie. You'll be shocked and impressed. Maybe not a bad idea to take some tissues with you. It's definitely a must-see.
52
Patrik 1,5, (Patrik Age 1.5) (2008,  PG)
Patrik 1,5, (Patrik Age 1.5)
I like the Swedish! Unlike traditional Hollywood style Swedish female director Ella Lemhagen does NOT delete scenes showing two men making passionate love. And she deserves my respect. Not only because of this fact the movie is worth watching but also because it shows a perfect balance between comedy, drama and erotics. Stellan Skarsgård's son Gustaf in his best movie so far!
53
Nobel Son (2008,  R)
Nobel Son
Watched this one after illegally downloading it. Still waiting for it to be released in theatre, outside USA. No trace of any region 2 DVD release either. That's how illegal downloading is stimulated, due to assholes who won't bother to release a movie.
Having said this I'd like to say that I liked this flick so much better than its successor Bottle Shock. Maybe it is not a typical thriller but it certainly has a weird plot. Randall Miller did a very good job. Alan Rickman yet again put down a wonderfully well-played selfish character, a type which only Alan Rickman can do perfectly. I enjoyed him and his hairy legs quite much!
Bryan Greenberg & Mary Steenbergen did a good job as well and I just loved Danny DeVito in his supporting role. The soundtrack was a bit irritating but the scene transitions were great.
Pity it takes years before Europeans can see this movie in a legal way. They even got me to download it even though I swore never to do anything like this ever! There you go!
54
Gone Baby Gone (2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
Oh yes Ben Affleck! Great directing and writing! A police thriller based on a novel that I want to read after seeing this movie! The end of the story may be expected, but then again... not. I absolutely loved every minute of it and enjoyed the performances of Casey Affleck, Ed Harris and the ever so great Morgan Freeman. Will watch it again sometime. See it.
55
De Hel van Tanger (2006,  Unrated)
De Hel van Tanger
I have no choice but rate this movie full marks, probably because I'm Flemish myself. Anyway this drama is based on real events, which I remember reading in the newspapers. This film makes me think about this other film called Closet Land where an innocent female writer is being tortured in a foreign prison. In De hel van Tanger the name of the country is Morocco. This fact makes it easier to judge the country and as a result I could read Flixster reviews where it says "I will never travel to Morocco any more!". A bit of an injustice because what these Flixster users don't realize is that this kind of torture happens in many poor countries other than Morocco. It might have been better to hide the name of the country.
It's absolutely worth watching and it doesn't make the viewer glad. I hope this movie - as well as Closet Land - helps fighting injustice. Let's just give poor Dawit Isaak a minute of attention. He's just one of the currently tortured prisoners the media is fighting for, so far unsuccessfully.
56
I Am David (2004,  PG)
I Am David
Why is James Caviezel portrayed that big in the movie poster when it is in fact young Ben Tibber who steals the show? What a great performance alongside another great actress Joan Plowright.
This story is so incredibly beautiful I had to take my bucket because my tears were flowing again. This must be seen by anyone, no matter age.
57
Rory O'Shea Was Here (Inside I'm Dancing) (2005,  R)
Rory O'Shea Was Here (Inside I'm Dancing)
This movie was endlessly beautiful because it was all about strong friendship and desire to lead a normal life. I loved it because a very close friend of mine happens to be a very smart wheelchair user with a fantastic brain and a high dose of black humour. Naturally this wonderful film made me instantly think about him and made me laugh a great deal.
What a great pair of actors James McAvoy & Steven Robertson in fact are!
58
Charlie Bartlett (2007,  R)
Charlie Bartlett
I've been waiting a long time to watch this movie and the waiting was worth it. My goodness this was a great flick! An American flick even. I could never have thought I would like an American high school movie so much as this one!
Actors Robert Downey Jr. & Anton Yelchin were superb in their roles!
I laughed quite a lot! Unexpectedly good!
59
Inside Deep Throat (2005,  NC-17)
Inside Deep Throat
Wooow! This is really a documentary that made me jump of anger! When you tell artists - bad artists or good artists - that they can not experiment in certain avenues you are taking away the basic freedoms of every American! actor Harry Reems said in an interview during the Deep Throat trial. Really well-said. His co-star, the late Linda Lovelace was a bit of a turncoat when she realized she went free she hastily turned and backed the feminists against porn group and wrote a book about her experiences. Harry Reems was told: If the Republicans are going to be re-elected you're going to jail, if the Democrats are elected you're going to be set free. (Another of many reasons why NO ONE EVER should support the fucking hypocritical Republicans!) Thanks to the Jimmy Carter voters actor Harry Reems was set free.
But be not mistaken fellow Flixster users, even Flixster is very good at censoring on this very website. Two examples: I uploaded a movie still of a bare naked Alan Rickman taking a dip into the ocean from the flick Dark Harbor which was immediately being removed by the Flixster moderators. Also I had to censor my Dogma skin by putting a black square on the Metatron's non-existent genitals. (Feel free to take a look at that skin in my created skins and laugh out loudly!).
No really, Americans are as prudish today as they were in the 70ies when Deep Throat was in theatres and caused a stir.
This documentary also shows the progression towards today's porn industry. And I must agree with the Deep Throat film makers: at least Deep Throat seemed created for the sake of art rather than today's porn, made because of money and nothing else.

Riding in Cars with Boys (2001,  PG-13)
Riding in Cars with Boys
This must be one of the best movies Drew Barrymore has been in. A good plot, wonderful acting and a great music score. Highly recommended!
61
Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas) (2006,  PG-13)
Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas)
My goodness what a great World War One movie, unlike any war movies I've seen so far. It shows the absolute absurdity of war and it shows kindness and humanity where / when it is impossibile to be kind and human.
It must be seen by anyone.
62
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Absolutely brilliant movie! According to me the best Potter movie made so far but that might have to do with the fact that the Severus Snape scenes were many and spread well from the very beginning to the very end. Actor Jim Broadbent was fantastic as Slughorn and even the three kids didn't irritate me this time. But where did Snape's line It's over! go to?

Last Chance Harvey (2009,  PG-13)
Last Chance Harvey
This movie is the reason why I prefer British romantic movies to American ones. Nevertheless I would never ignore a film that has Dustin & Emma against each other. I love them both! Wonderful movie, great humour and a movie that gives people hope.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (2008,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
It's funny that Tim Burton was one of the first directors to make a 3D animated movie and he did it so well. This flick shows that his fantasy doesn't have any limits. All those figures are so original. These days almost every director makes better movies than this one but they all copied lovely Tim Burton. Watch this in December.

In the Name of the Father (1993,  R)
In the Name of the Father
Outstanding performances of both Daniel Day-Lewis & Pete Postlethwaite.
Terrible piece of history. One keeps wondering how it is possible that even today certain right-wing government members think so highly of themselves and have so much pride that they have so many difficulties to admit they made a mistake? One also wonders which fate was worse: to be killed in a pub by a bomb or to be arrested and spending fifteen years in jail innocently and eventually die in jail.
The answer will be different depending on the person being asked. I find it hard to answer anyway.
It's a must see movie!

Catch a Fire (2006,  PG-13)
Catch a Fire
Wonderful movie based on real events in the life of freedom fighter Patrick Chamusso. Patrick Chamusso fights against Apartheid after a white South African detective (played by a brilliant Tim Robbins) tortures him and his innocent wife. The real Patrick can be seen at the end of the movie where he proudly tells that he owns a house where eighty orphans live in his care.
I don't know where Bob Marley was in the movie (I heard his songs) but I did notice Nelson Mandela.
A movie in the same class as Goodbye Bafana.

Eastern Promises (2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
Can a thriller based on real facts become better than this one? Hardly.
Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel & Naomi Watts are superb!
It's a must see but you'll be warned: there is much blood and cruelty in this flick!

Kinsey (2004,  R)
Kinsey
I have nothing bad to write about this movie. I laughed out loudly at one scene which went like this:

Interviewer: How old were you when you first engaged in sexual activity with a partner?

Interviewee: Fourteen.

Interviewer: How?

Interviewee: With whorrrs.

Interviewer: How often were you having intercourse with animals at age fourteen?

Interviewee: It's true. I fucked a pony. You are genius! How did you know?

Interviewer: You just said you had sex with whorrrs.

Interviewee: Nooo! Whorrrs! Not horse! Whorrrs!!!!

FUCKING GREAT scene!! lol
Anyway this movie made me think about Something the lord made, an other good movie about an American doctor who went controversial by having a black man as his closest helper and surgeon in the 1940's. But the movie Kinsey is made so well just because they don't censor in any way. Also Liam Neeson seems to be very good at playing real-life characters. Before playing Alfred Kinsey he played Oskar Schindler and later on Michael Collins, two other perfect performances highly recommended to watch.
The other cast members should also be mentioned.
Liam Neeson is the best.
This movie is a must!

The Incredible Adventures of Wallace & Gromit (2001,  Unrated)
The Incredible Adventures of Wallace & Gromit
Three incredibly funny short movies with a wise message to all children. And to those who can read, there's always a clue to be found on the first page of the newspaper. The entire story is very original and the laws of gravitation are absolutely non-existent. Anything can happen! Enjoy it and laugh!

Kvinnodröm (Dreams) (Journey Into Autumn) (1955,  Unrated)
Kvinnodröm (Dreams) (Journey Into Autumn)
One of Ingmar Bergman's better movies about four women whose lives are intertwined. Bergman doesn't hide feelings and shows erotic sides of women which was a progressive step in the 50ies.
One of Bergman's "lighter" films and certainly a recommendation.

Leatherheads (2008,  PG-13)
Leatherheads
Aaaah George Clooney...what a great comedian! Another comedy which he did perfectly. Here he both acted AND directed.
Renée Zellweger, again in the role of the 1920s woman (as in Cinderella Man), proved again she can act a great deal, and so do Krasinski & Pryce.
Even the football scenes were watchable if you are as uninterested as myself.
Yeah I have to recommend this one to all of you!

Io non ho paura (I'm Not Scared) (2003,  R)
Io non ho paura (I'm Not Scared)
FANTASTIC drama, on the same quality level as The Boy in the striped Pyjamas.
It keeps you on the edge of your chair and fills you with both amazement and disgust.
An Italian must see movie!

The Tenant (1976,  R)
The Tenant
A thriller that succeeded to scare me, but the end confused me a little bit mainly because I didn't expected it. Roman Polanski once again positively surprised me. Great to see the legendary Shelley Winters in a small supporting role.
I thought the original movie was in the French language but apparently I was wrong.

The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009,  R)
The Stoning of Soraya M.
About this movie:
A very dramatic movie based on day by day true events in the country of Iran. A movie that will make women as angry, just as angry as when watching The Kite Runner. I'm glad Muslim women and men are fighting against women mass murderers in governments while Muslim rapists go free. Just as you will see in the play at the end of the movie (a play against which Muslims protested!) some Muslim men are setting their eyes on other women and fuck them and decide to throw out their wives when they think they are too ugly and fat. They just call the police, call their wives whores and the stoning is a fact.
WILL WE SUPPORT THEM? OF COURSE NOT!

A message for Turkey:
The Turks are currently very disappointed because the first European president is very much against Turkey entering the European Union. Turks call it bad news. If I watch movies like this one or The Kite Runner or Not without my daughter and watch what Muslims are capable of I advice the Turks to openly start protesting and show that women MUST have the same rights as men and forbid a Muslim to have more than one wife. If the Turks close their eyes for equal rights in other Muslim countries and not in the least in Turkey itself I am the first to show my support to those who deny Turkey EU membership.

A message to Muslim men:
A hundred years ago some male Catholics were swines and women had no rights, not even the right to vote in election. It took decennia to stop this but we succeeded more or less in Europe. It is time that the Islam will show the world they can stop their anti-women rules and let women choose a partner by looking for them in a normal way and not forcing them to marry their first cousins. Do I need to write about the beating of women as well or do you get the point?

Stephen King's It (1990,  Unrated)
Stephen King's It
After Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and The Green Mile in my opinion the best Stephen King story on screen ever released.
This tale takes three hours to tell but it feels like an hour. No second of boredom. The acting is superb of all children and adult actors involved, The plot has no holes, the directing is fabulous. The switching back and forth between now and then is very well made.
I have owned this movie on VHS since I was 16 and recently bought it on DVD. I used to be very scared but when I watched it tonight I hardly jumped. Maybe I've watched it too often and knew what was coming?
Anyway, that doesn't matter. I always feel very sad though when I see young actor Jonathan Brandis and his tragic end in real life. I can't stop thinking about that.
Rest in peace Jonathan Brandis & John Ritter.
