The Lover (L'amant) - R Jeeze, bad porn movie with a dramatic message.
The story is a bit weak, the quality is going down very quickly from time to time. And very mediocre acting. Add to this that the voice of Jeanne Moreau is very monotone and irritating.

Imagining Argentina - R A strange movie. This character Carlos played by Antonio Banderas has some kind of visions in his mind, but visions so clearly that he seems to be able to tell people who is dead and who is alive. A bit like The Shining almost.
But one negative fact is that Banderas and the other Hispanic characters should have spoken Spanish to each other. It would make the movie more believable.

Before Sunset - R Before Sunrise was about myself. The successor Before Sunset was not about myself because my own story is still being written.
This movie was a bit tougher to hang on to than the previous one: longer conversations and just a little bit less interesting I think.
I wonder if there will be a third movie? I hope so because I like this story...

De Helaasheid der Dingen (The Misfortunates) - Unrated This movie really seized me by the throat. It shows the fate of a young Flemish boy who lived just a stonethrow away from where I was raised and schooled. The movie is spoken in my local dialect and recorded in the area where I grew up.
Apart from these facts this movie is based on the real life story of writer Dimitri Verhulst who is only 5 years my senior and was raised in the same area as myself. His life must have been hard and tragic. No mother around and a father and uncles who lived off alcohol. The movie is very rough and makes me think about my own situation, unfortunately.
If you have an alcoholic family member close to you this film may be very tough for you. Sad but true.

Luftslottet som sprängdes (The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest) - Unrated The third and last part of the movie series about the life of Lisbeth Salander. In this part there is not much action unlike the other movies. The case against Salander (played by a wonderful Noomi Rapace) for attempted murder on her father is the heart of this movie. You need to watch the previous two movies (Män som hatar kvinnor and Flickan som lekte med elden) to hang on to this one. I certainly recommend all three, they are exciting and at the same time the story is repulsive. December 19, 2009

Black Snake Moan - R Wonderful story about friendship, respect and love, with a religious and musical background. Samuel L. Jackson as a blues guitarist is really something to hear and watch. As for Christina Ricci, she impressed me! She'll end up right into my list of favourite actors and actresses here on Flixster.
See this movie!

Before Sunrise - R Honestly, I LOOOVE this film. Why? Because I'm a romantic chick? Maybe. But definitely because the frenchwoman characterized by Julie Delpy is in fact myself. This movie is about me. As a matter of fact this story happened to me three Summers ago in the city of London where I met this American while finishing an English Breakfast and he came to my table and asked me to look for his accoustic guitar while he went to the restroom. We started talking when he came back and we spent the rest of the day visiting museums and sitting on the tube. We talked endlessly and until today we have never met each other again or talked to each other. The day didn't end up romantically either. He left me explaining he lost his airplane ticket from Heathrow to South-America that same night and he had to leave for the airport to solve the problem.
About this movie: it was very realistic. Some of you may think it is slow and boring but that is exactly what real life is. Forget about all these successful lucky Drew Barrymore & Adam Sandler romantic comedies. They never happen while this movie Before Sunrise is more of a reality.
What scared me most, or amazed me, is that the woman's thoughts were exacly the same opinions I would share in the same situation.
That's why this film gets five stars from me. I recognize myself as the true adventurer I am.

I Accuse (J'Accuse) - R A very realistic story about a young woman who has a bad reputation in a small community. She accuses her GP of having drugged and raped her and an investigation is started. Unfortunately the DNA found in the semen on her clothes doesn't match the DNA of her GP. Nobody believes her and she becomes the target of the town.
The script is based on a true story, a story that can happen wherever in the world. The film is shot in Canada by a Canadian crew.
It's tragic and calling for revenge and it keeps you right at your screen.

Final Destination 3 - R This is the third movie of four, so far and it shows that this movie suffers from anaemia. The plot is forced together and therefore the deaths are pathetic, often caused by people not doing their job correctly (leaving a security position on duty or being extremely clumsy). Except for the car accident and the burning I wouldn't think anything similar could ever happen anywhere. The series of events were identical to the first and second movie and therefore totally predictable. A few parts were just okay, so this movie barely passes the test. December 16, 2009

Quantum of Solace - PG-13 Honestly, I have seen all 007 movies but this must be one of the worst so far. What did I miss in this movie? A strong plot, a lot of sarcastic jokes, word puns such as only James Bond can say them. I believe that it was in the movie Goldfinger that there was a Bond girl found dead on a bed naked and painted in gold. In Quantum of Solace we saw a girl lying dead painted in black oil. Where is the originality? There was absolutely nothing new in this movie. And the Bond song by Alicia Keys was awful by the way.
This makes me wonder if there should ever be an other Bond movie...

Tomten är far till alla barnen (In Bed With Santa) - Unrated I have owned this movie on VHS for quite a few years. The first time I saw it I didn't know anything about Sweden and thought this comedy was extremely funny. You will probably find it funny too, as did the Swedish. After many times this comedy becomes less and less funny.
But it's actually true that Swedish women often have several children by several men. I happen to know a few examples myself. But it seems a little unusual to invite all your previous men to a party on Christmas Eve. Even in Sweden.

Freaks - Unrated This film touched me because of the way all these unusually shaped people were treated in those days. So terrible. A very short movie but an interesting story about love and betrayal. December 15, 2009

Black Hawk Down - R I agree it's a tragic story. In October 1993 a group of American soldiers is sent to Somalia, East Africa to feed the population because the food supplies are getting in the wrong hands and people are starving to death. But these wrong people lead by Mohammed Farah Aidid are giving a lot of unexpected resistance.
In this movie there is a lot of bloodshed, it is filmed very realistically and bloody. Somehow it wasn't interesting to me. I think this movie is more meant for a male audience. Ironically enough the only two words of a female in the movie were Hello! Hello! spoken by one of the soldiers' American wife during a long distance call. The rest of the movie is defined by shooting to kill and explosions and shouts and cries of pain.
It wasn't a bad film but to me this wasn't very exciting! I assume the novel is more fascinating and emotional.

Final Destination 2 - R This successor is still watchable, even entertaining. A few laughable deaths though which made me wonder where all modern security went to but also a few not-so-ridiculous circumstances. Of course the plot is a topic that is mainly undiscussable because not many of us are fortune tellers. So when you watch it remember that it comes from a Hollywood edit room and you're allowed to laugh at what you see!
Have fun and be prepared for some gruesome scenes!

sex, lies, and videotape - R Oh well, I have seen much better dramas than this one.
The end of the movie was a bit... tricky.

Joshua (Joshua: The Devil's Child) - R Jacob Kogan who plays Joshua is partly responsible for the amount of horror in the movie due to his scary (and innocent) looks. Wonderful choice of actor.
This story does not tell about ghosts (even though they are mentioned) but about a boy who is thought to cause his parents and grandparents evil and pain. In fact it's a clever story written from the point of view of the father (played by Sam Rockwell) who is not aware he is abusing his son.
And the viewer is given the feeling that the son is in fact evil. This makes the story so good. The viewer needs to use his brain and take a position.

Juloratoriet (Christmas Oratorio) - Unrated I bought this VHS movie during the first year I lived in Sweden with the aim of practicing Swedish. I have tried to watch it a couple of times during the past years but stopped it in the beginning every time again. This time I made it to the end but it was a very difficult task. The movie was way too dramatic, much too slow and therefore pretty irritating. The story was unnecessary long and totally failed to touch my heart. But I got irritated, so it didn't fail to cause emotions. Anyway, I should never have bought this tape. Moreover I thought it was a Christmas movie but I was totally wrong about that! There are far better Swedish dramas on the market. December 10, 2009

Flightplan - PG-13 Good thriller. It made me really think about which character is sane and which is not. Before I watched this movie I thought that this would be boring and predictable but it was not. So give it a try! December 9, 2009

Diabolique (Les Diaboliques) - Unrated This must be one of the best thrillers I've watched 'cause the storyline is simple and the acting is great, the twist unexpected. It made me sit on the tip of my chair while holding my breath. Very good French oldie. As many other Flixster users write (and I must agree with them) this movie could be a very good competitor to any Hitchcock thriller. December 8, 2009

Be Kind Rewind - PG-13 Miserable. Probably meant to be good but a total disaster. The plot itself is very weak. Which customer on Earth would accept a self-made 20-minute movie from the local video rental store without realisizing that he's being busted? Maybe that's the essence of the humour but I don't see the humour in that. Apart from that I hated Jack Black, he irritates me... a lot! I loved Mos Def in Something the Lord made but this plot doesn't do such a good rapper-actor as him any good.
Skip.

Duplex (Our House) - PG-13 Hey, Danny DeVito still got humour!
I was pleasantly surprised because for once Drew Barrymore doesn't do a romantic comedy, but just a comedy. Of course if you have the famous Ben Stiller on your side you can't go wrong. Eileen Essell is also great.
Sometimes the humour seems a bit exaggerated (like the police mixing up a first aid help situation with a sex assault) but at the end of the movie it will all become clear to you. Nice little twist! I liked that!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail - PG This movie (just like The Life of Brian which has a better soundtrack) is just so mediocre. I recognize the humour which is at least original, but generally it was quite boring and repetitive. I still see The Meaning of Life as the funniest Monty Python movie.
Watch it in company and when drunk only.
