Where Danger Lives
by Veronique"where danger lives" is one of those rko film noir pieces robert mitchum had been tackling since the 40s after his legendary "out of the past". mitchum, as howard hughes' number one investment of superstars, was craving for better roles instead of the central criminal characters or hard-boiled detectives in most of his movies, so he attempted to demonstrate some diversity by playing a straitforward middle-classed doctor messed with luring but suspicious femme fatale.
this time, mitchum is still the imperious man who fancies challengingly provocative woman despite she might detonate his doom, and he dives into the trap without hesitation jusy as he says in "out of the past"...."BABY, I DON'T CARE!" the first 20 mins of the film is mesmerizingly romantic on the affair between a doctor and lonesome beautiful woman with suicidal tendency. (impersonated by faith domergue, whose fickleness and angelic beauty rival jan greer in "out of the past")...then the gallant mitchum intends to rescue the wretched woman from her seemingly overbearing father(played by claude rains, a brief screen occurence.)....BUT the aging father turns out to be her husband, then the elder man dies of an accidental hit. after that, mitchum suffers from concussion, and these two flee to mexico. gradually, more dark secrets are discovered on the road.
the whole movie might appear like a strip-tease which conceals the crucial details as foreshadowing then bares it all at once as gratitous treats to the audience. there's nothing too unique about it but it sticks to its noir patterns: seedy, shadowy cinematography, un-trustworthy attractive woman and gullible man who is trouble-magnet, then a gruesome twist in the end, so the audience is aware of what exactly to expect. somehow it does have the embellishment of desperado road movie in the paradise of outlaws, mexico.
mitchum doesn't do chain-smoking as he does in "out of the past" but this movie lacks an emulating villain, and the 5 mins screen presence of claude rains doesn't make a competent impact like kirk douglas' whit in "out of the past", even though the woman is devious enough as the bait to man's self-ruin. but inevitably, this movie follows the cliche of saint/demon when it comes to romancing the women, mitchum re-embraces the bosom of the good-gal, maureen o'sullivan. and the metaphor is blatant: red rose for the stimulating bad girl, so the white rose would be the gentle woman who demurely always awaits her beloved man."where danger lives" is the milder does of "out of the past"..if you like "out of the past", you might also like "where danger lives" even it's NOT as good as "out of past". still very watchable since it has ROBERT MITCHUM!!! faith domergue is also VERY watchable, absolutely striking, especially at her first shot, lying in the hospital bed, definitely a babe!

Closer told us mesmerizing tale of 4 people , in their adult's relationship .
Well , what makes this movie to be one of the qualified one ?
1. The perfect casting
Nah , from mesmerizing Natalie Portman as the pink-wigged stripper Alice Ayres , the troublesome pathetic Jude Law as the good-looking Dan , America's biggest sweetheart Julia Roberts as Anna who played as a total REAL adult in a sex-themed movie , jawdropping Clive Owen as the sex-obsessed Doctor , Larry .
2. The adulterers theme packaged in a clever and beautiful way .
Without any explicit sex-scenes . Well , Malena do have sex-scenes or 'exposing' scenes . But , Mike Nichols made it.
3. Beautiful soundtracks . From the first mesmerizing meeting moments until the end . What had made this drama was not boring at all .
4. Clever script-maker , which made lots of sentences from Closer became memorable things .
At the end, Closer showed us both humanity sides and our animal sides in lust , jealousy , obsessions , sex and everything else , not like any other romance-dramas which only show you true love , happily ever after , bla , bla , bla...

Laskar Pelangi showed us a the soothing Bangka Belitong scenery , funny childish comedies and the very important live lessons .
The marvelous movie came from Indonesia and it's one of our local MASTERPIECE . Brought to you by the Mira Lesmana . The bright director , with help of the author of the true-story Laskar Pelangi itself , Andrea Hirata . The cum l aude who studied in French , and the Ikal , himself .
If you compared with the book . They lost some of the miraculous stories in the book and some false potrayal , like <s>how they pictured adult Lintang and erased the Hospital for mental illness stories</s> . Well , that's why it loses half star from me .
With such a charming , soothing and enthusiasm in the marvelous Indonesian language soundtrack .
Laskar Pelangi gave you these natural actors from Bangka Belitong , 11 native kids from Bangka with qualified acting talent .
Also , with the talented Cut Mini as Bu Mus and Ikranagara as Pak Harfan ,did their duties perfectly as qualified actors .
With small supporting role from Tora Sudiro, Rieke Dyah Pitaloka ,Lukman Sardi, Jajang C. Noer and Mathias Muchus and all are seniors in Indonesia movie industry .
I vote this as "Indonesian entry for Academy Award" this or next year . Rather than Ayat-ayat Cinta , Laskar Pelangi is way more universal .
At the end , Laskar Pelangi is one of the best Indonesian movie ever made in Indonesia's movie history ,Hiduplah dengan memberi sebanyak-banyaknya dan bukan menerima sebanyak-banyaknya!

Here comes the new era , of the new-type superhero . Cruel , Imperfect and anti-typical . Here comes HANCOCK !
F*Ck OFF! That was the first impression from me to Hancock . The first 45 minutes just all-crap things everywhere . From the annoying super-powered man , Hancock . The pointless storyline , the destruction by Hancock himself just made me ready to rate Hancock as a 1/2(HALF) star movie . Even worse than the cliche teen-craze High School Musical .
But , as the time went by . I saw a very good development , especially after the <s>he went out from prison</s> and started the TRUE drama with all the characters . So here's , my kindness , 2 1/2 stars .
I want to speak about fact . Would believe if there's a magazine(called F*RST Indonesia) rated this F*CK OFF! movie straight 5 stars and gave The Dark Knight 4 stars ?
Since that time , even with that clean and nice layouts , i wouldn't buy the magazine anymore . Bad , bad reviewer .
Hancock has a little bit' shaky-dizzy camera , score filled with the character's voices and breathes (wanna' copy No Country for Oldman , huh?) , full of profanities script .
All above just made this movie is a super unwatchable to kids . Actually , if they loose all of above , Hancock maybe the next X-men for the kids .
Talking about the action and comedies . Will Smith and the script-maker broke them all to be crap-talks and profanities . It's sometimes hard to reveal the comedy side of depressed drunk 'superhero' .
Will Smith as Hancock himself looked depressing and really so-not-hot at all ,so far i've seen Will Smith as actor , maybe this is one of his worst role .
Charlize Theron as Mary Embrey . Why Charlize ? This role just down-graded her status as A-list star . You don't need Charlize only for this easy role , even if you put Sophia Bush or Lindsay Lohan . It'll stay the same . Well , i agree that Charlize was a good name for this crap . But , it's just wasting of her talent (and money) .
Jason Bateman as Ray Embrey . He's just another forgettable character , no impressions . Just awful . Honestly , you better put good-looking actors like Patrick Dempsey or Colin Farrel as the cast, if you want to raise the box office-profit of this movie . Same skill better effect .
At the end, F*CK OFF ! Hancock . You're not a hero , just stupid super-powered human . With no REAL antagonists and blurred storyline . What do you expect much ?

It is the brilliant creation lots of people's mind , becoming one , a brilliant mixture that has been hypnotized audience like me . By persons such as Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener, John Cusack, John Malkovich, Mary Kay Place, Orson Bean , and Spike Jonze . Those are the brilliant peoples behind this extra ordinary 2 hours++ journey .
With absurd packaging , from the bright cinematography , dramatic opera scores and freaky script's words . Then it comes a clever creation from the Academy Award nominee , Spike Jonze .
With clever yet hypnotizing scenes , <s>from the 'portal' , low ceiling 8 1/2 floor , Craig x Maxine x Lotte love story ,Malcovich Malcovich Malcovich... and the absurdly beautiful puppeteer's scenes</s> . BJM is one of the most clever yet creative creation i've ever seen , it gave me science fiction , comedy , beyond the borders , wildest dreams , puppeteer's , dramatic absurd drama and everything else . Surely I LOVE IT , eventhough if you say this is freaky , wierd or anything else . Remember , something freaky or wierd sometimes is a super-brilliant things .
The casting was a perfect house of madness . These people acted really well (the spot lights) .
John Cusack as the insane freaky Craig Schwartz was (IMO) one of his best performance so far , the perfect expression , emotion and i saw him in very comfy condition using those crazy hair and makeup , to look ugly without any shame .
Cameron Diaz as the (also) insane , animal-lover ,<s>gay</s> , quirky Lotte Schwartz . Cam did this role as another perfection , maybe she wasn't as strong as Catherine Keener here . But she gave us a pleasant role . Also , not afraid to look ugly and dull .
Catherine Keener as le femme fatale(in other ways) , everybody's obsession ,wicked Maxine Lund , she got the Best Supporting role Oscar nominee for this role .
John Malcovich as John Horatio Malcovich . Well , sometimes it is not hard to play as yourself , especially for actor like John Malcovich . So , no comment about his acting . But , choosing the idea of 'Being the REAL PERSON John Malcovich' was the brilliant , creative idea which made this movie surreal and dramatic .
Then , there's some cameos from <s>Charlie Sheen ,Wynona Ryder , Sean Penn , Dustin Hoffman , Gary Sinise and David Fincher</s> .
At the end, BJM is more than just another absurd creative movie . BJM is a brilliant movie , showed us some insanities and unthinkable ideas . It is beyond your imagination . Although with some tacky scenes , this movie is still appropriate to be rated straight 5 stars .
"You see the world through John Malkovich's eyes. Then after about 15 minutes, you're spit out into a ditch on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike!"

This is what you can call a GREAT Chinese movie . With the setting of WWII-era Shanghai , the vengeance , the planning of homicide and everything else mixed perfectly .
With unpredictable intrigues , jaw-dropping plans and lust-full affair , emotion and beautiful body languages , the timeline and the flashback directing.
From story to score to cinematography . Ang Lee made another MASTERPIECE after the homosexual cowboys in Brokeback Mountain . Not far from sex scenes , just like what Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal did in Brokeback . Lust , Caution served a full-of emotion scenes , even with that brutal sex-scenes of the forbidden affair . Which made a BIG controversy in China , while in Indonesia , the scenes were censored ,without missing any valuable scene .
With such emotional casts with award-full quality , fulfilled the completion of A-list Hollywood quality acting .
Tony Leung gave us an unforgettable performance as the lust-full rich smart man Mr. Yee . Either Tang Wei as the seductress Mak Tai-Tai / Wong Chia Chi , did her role as one of the best debut performance i have ever seen , even she had been banned almost every where in China because of the sex scenes , she will be the next Rinko Kikuchi (BABEL) from China . Lee Hom Wang as the wicked planner Kuang Yu Min was not as BIG as Tang Wei , he's okay and impressive enough , eventhough he was not more than Jay Zhou in Curse Of the Golden Flower .
At the end , Lust , Caution is Ang Lee's another MASTERPIECE after Brokeback Mountain , with beautiful scenery , classical Chinese culture shows and traditional music . THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL A GREAT CHINESE DRAMA .

With story that is Twilight looked-alike plus Underworld's action pack drama . Twins Effect is not more than stupid Chinese comedy with great cameo such as Jackie Chan and a really BAD 3D effect .
With not-too-cliche love story but lame one . Twins Effect is a parade of cute-faced humans and vampires . With only blue contact lenses and fake teeth , the make up itself just so simple .
Plus the freaky action scenes , the so-not-hillarious fighting scenes . Packaged with BAD score .
The casting just so-so .
With the eye-candy Edison Chen as Kazaf , the Vampire Prince , Edward Cullen type . Charlene Choi as Helen , not really fascinating acting . But , surely not an Isabella Swan here . The rest of the casts just so-so . Even Jackie Chan was BETTER than them all .
At the end, this movie just another crap from China . The only thing worth was just only the idea , of humanxvampire itself .Before Twilight , here's the Edward Cullen from China .

Ray is the name of the man who owns the extravagant story . A mixture of drama , glam , glitz and reality with powerful packaging .
Yes , it was the heart-wrenching tear-jerker movie . Story of family , money , drama , music and blindness .
With such a nice cinematography , inspiring quotes and nice score and setting . This movie looked radiant.
Honestly , i never knew Ray Charles before watching this movie and Jamie Foxx gave me total beautiful potrayal of Ray Charles's life , one of the performance that made me thrilled . Especially , the hospital scenes . It's not a wierd thing if Jamie got the Oscar on his palm .
Kerry Washingston also gave us a really great performance , a heart-wrenching lady .
The rest of the casts were merely great .
At the end,Ray is more than a biographical movie , it's a powerful one ,who gave me the potrayal of Ray Charles . Without any meaning of racism , this is what you call a great black people movie ! (Not the lame Norbit or Phat Girlz)

Blood Diamond is a brutal , bloody and thrilling sensation of an action-drama movie . With the Africa bloody views , tear-jerker drama(minus flowy-flowy love stories) , orchestrated chaos and holocaust for beautiful sparkles on rich people's body .
With serving from Edward Zwick . A dry land covered with red blood and black-skinned corpses . TIA , That is Africa
With awesome full-of-holocaust intervention scenes and the greatness of Africa-land(read : Africa's scenery) . Zwick packaged Blood Diamond with rap-reggae score ,which did not match and over-volume in some scenes .
Zwick made another brutal excitement , a long running-time but yet thrilling and exciting .
Well , it was an almost-perfect casting .
Leonardo Di Caprio as the brutal , white-skinned African Danny Archer did his role well and serious , i never expected that he could change his accent nicely , from that crispy-young voice into British-African voice .
Djimon Honsou as the innocent Solomon Vanda . He made Solomon's emotion(and body language) nicely and captured my attention(to understand the plot) perfectly .
Jennifer Connely as the slick ,kind-hearted journalist Maddy Bowen 'over-whelmed' by Leo's & Honsou's appearance , she did that well . But , still forgettable .
At the end,Blood Diamond is a thrilling sensation with African scenery and full-of-suspense action-drama and truth .

The Toll of the Sea
by Veronique"the toll of the sea" is a historical gem for cinema for its avant-gardist usage of technicolor shooting, and it's literarily the first color movie ever..and it's also the debute for anny may wong as the major star in her acting career. practically this story is a revision of "madame butterfly", another interracial romance theme favored by the public in spite of its bigotry then, depicting its remorse and suppresed angst magnified by the inevitable tint of romanticism. the sceneries and the oriental set-design is phemonally striking.
an american merchant rescued by a chinese gal along the fishing village, lonesome in an outlandish state, he romances her for the solace of companionship, so naturally it leads to the wed-lock of these two. but her existence is put into oblivion after he returns to his homeland. besides the sneering disaproval of his compatriots is not a pleasant thing to cope with...eventually he retreats into the bossom of his childhood sweetheart, the woman of his own kind. meanwhile this chinese woman still carries the torch of love in solicitude with the hybrid son he has left her, fantasizing her own american dream with the feeble naivete that she could evolve herself into the league of westernized ladies.
then one day, this forgetful man comes the terms of scoring things right due to his caucasion wife's conscientious persuasion. so the hybridized seed could embrace his paternal land of america while his maternal chinese side is abandoned for good.
supposedly, the movie takes a sympathetic but condescending perspect to the interracial romance, and there're sentimental indulgement, the neglectance of reality in it and certainly the oriental martyrdom.
first of all, the notion of genuine interracial romance cannot exist in older days. mostly the reality of such interracial bond would be sexually desperate white soldiers sleeping with voluntary oriental prostitutes who crave for an immediate relief from poverty and a fast excess to america, women who desire to use men's guilibility for a way out. besides english was not a globalized language then so the whispers of love would be nonsense. so why it occurs a lot? men don't need a soul from women, and they just long for a oriental doll as sexual commodity. so all those tales of interracial romances in early ameircan cinema might just be men's self-aggrandizing fables to boast their superior manhood. the real sordidness wouldn't be shown on screen since no audience wanna self-willingly get disillusioned.
second of all, wong character's yearning for america, such as dressing herself in the american lady is a of self-denial. in the movie, she even takes pride in having an american husband, the lady of a dignified gentleman, so how about her chinese family descendant? truthfully, anna mae herself is a thorough american despite her ethnic appearance, her oriental glamour is a stock sold as exotic interest for mass consumption.
in ignorance of its inauthenticity, "the toll of the sea"could be masochistically romantic in a primitively feminie way. of course, anna mae is not to be blamed since that's the only type of roles available then in hollywood. the best value of "toll of the sea" would be its grandeur visual milestone in cinema."toll of the sea" is only worthy watching for its cinematic visuality, the earliest technicolor flick in history, and sceneries are breath-takingly exotic and mesmerizing. the rest is more false and absurd than arian nights.

Beside those magical features . WALL-E showed its Environmental purposes with fun , clever ways . It mesmerized all ages viewers .
Plus , the innocently cute and lovely scripts . WALL-E is a super-kawaii and lovely movie .
At the end, A science-fiction with same quality as Steven Spielberg's.

We all agree that is hard-life to be an ugly people , especially for they who were born with 'animal's' face .
Penelope served that theme with modern touch fairytale with fun , fresh and delicate setting and cinematography , what made this movie not cliche and boring as i thought .
Maybe some people said that it was an Enchanted rip-off . Yes , is some points Penelope showed that it wanted to be an Enchanted . But , Penelope is a smart innocent girl not a dumb cliche Giselle .
Penelope served us colorful setting ,in playful artistic ways with modern-touch with the fairytale cinematography , with pop-rock score which made Penelope as a modern-creation and don't forget about cute pig-nose and less-showed pig ears .
Penelope gave us sweet casts .
sweet-boyish James Mcavoy as the loser-gambler 'Max Champion' . Goth couture princess Christina Ricci as the innocent pig-faced Penelope Wilhern . Played as cute as usual , they are fantasy-specialists . Then , there is Catherine O' Hara as Jessica Wilhern which played always as hideous as always and very small role for Reese Witherspoon as the punk-rocker-bar-girl Annie , looked so boring and forgettable , even she had played really nice in Walk the line , she didn't do 'Annie' seriously .
Then , the comedic Burn Gorman did that cliche-ly and at last , Peter Dinklage as the abnormally short Lemon as the completion of abnormally short people a.k.a. dwarf in fairytale story .
Beside that pluses sides . Penelope showed us some hideous comedic scenes , which are really cliche . Check out these scenes :

At the end , Penelope
is a fun-to-watch movie , with comedic-fresh-modern fairytale touch that girls will love .
