38
Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera) (1929,  Unrated)
Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera)
Brilliantly predictive filmmaking that is the Citizen Kane of its genre, which itself is mindbogglingly difficult to pin down.

David Lean's non-epic masterpiece.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006,  R)
47
The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
This and "The Lives of Others" stand as proof that great films are still being made. I was in a blue funk for days after watching this. Nolan is a structural genius.
48
Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (2006,  R)
Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others)
This and "The Prestige" are proof that great films are still being made. Seems at one point to be edging towards predictability but goes in an unanticipated, yet utterly convincing direction. Also, one of the best closing lines in all of cinema.
49
Rushmore (1998,  R)
50
The Flight of the Phoenix (1965,  Unrated)
The Flight of the Phoenix
Masterfully drawn characters. A cry for the power of man's intellect.

The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath! (Ironiya sudby, ili S legkim parom!) (1975,  Unrated)
The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath! (Ironiya sudby, ili S legkim parom!)
A classic of Soviet cinema. A bit of trivia: the female lead is not Russian but Ukrainian. Her dialogue and singing were dubbed in post. The songs, all Russian poetry set to music, are sublime, and range from heartbreaking to ephemerally joyous.
52
Office Space (1999,  R)
Office Space
Anyone seen my red Swingline?
53
Idiocracy (2006,  R)
Idiocracy
This film is not fiction. Just look around you for signs of the coming idiot-apocalypse.

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
We'll meet again. Don't know where, don't know when.
55
Die Hard (1988,  R)
Die Hard
There is not a wasted scene, shot, or line of dialogue in the entire film, but it does not seem at all pared down. A masterclass in screenwriting could be taught around just this film.
56
Die Hard With a Vengeance (Die Hard 3) (1995,  R)
Die Hard With a Vengeance (Die Hard 3)
This washed away the bad taste of Die Hard 2. John McLane in the Big Apple with badass Zeus along for the ride.

Kelly's Heroes
"You know, drinking wine, eating cheese, and catching some rays."
58

Thank your lucky stars for Lawrence Kasdan.

2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984,  PG)
2010: The Year We Make Contact
Nothing could hope to succeed the greatest film ever made, 2001, but 2010 acquits itself as a solid, occasionally sublimely shot hard sci-fi movie.

Things to Come (1936,  Unrated)
Things to Come
"Do you realise the immense tasks we shall undertake? When we set ourselves to an active and aggressive peace. When we direct our energies to tear out the wealth of this planet and exploit all these giant possibilities of science that have been hitherto squandered on war and senseless competition. We shall excavate the eternal hills. We shall make such use of the treasures of the sky and sea and earth as men have never dreamt of hitherto. I would that I could see our children's children in this world we shall win for them. But in them and through them, we shall live again."

- John Cabal

119
Casino Royale (1967,  G)
Casino Royale
Completely ridiculous and non-sensical, but with its high points. The soundtrack is killer, by the way.
120

Space Mutiny
The best worst movie ever made, and consequently the best episode of MST3K ever made.

Thoroughly hilarious!
123
Henry V (1989,  PG-13)
124
The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
A spare horror film and the best of its genre. The effects work is real. (That last word would be in italics if Flixster would permit me.)

The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
144
The Black Hole (1979,  PG)
The Black Hole
A science-fiction retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's "MS. Found in a Bottle" and one of the last hurrahs of grand studio effects films. "Elegant," in the words of matte artist Harrison Ellenshaw.
145
The Big Lebowski (1998,  R)
146
Collateral (2004,  R)

Logodaedaly at its cinematic finest. Brilliant transitions.
155
The Fisher King (1991,  R)
156
Hell's Angels (1930,  PG)
Hell's Angels
A masterpiece with some easily forgiven flaws. This film is absolutely real. Not to be forgotten are the Zeppelin sequence; the final bombing run; and Monte Rutledge's death scene.
157
Silver Bears (Fool's Gold) (1978,  PG)
Silver Bears (Fool's Gold)
Put this on DVD!
158
The Fifth Element (1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
She knows it's a Multipass.
159
Biggles - Adventures in Time (1988,  PG)
Biggles - Adventures in Time
Completely silly and dated '80s attempt to reinvigorate the Biggles character. Neil Dickson does a superb job as the dashing hero, but apart from the WWI sequences, this film is forgettable.

Gregory's Girl (1981,  PG)

176
Warrior of the Lost World (1985,  Unrated)
Warrior of the Lost World
An index of cinematic theft on the same level as "Space Mutiny" (q.v.). Stars an unfortunate Donald Pleasence, Persis Khambatta (no longer bald), and that guy from "Paper Chase." Notable for the breakout role of Mega-Weapon.
177
I'm All Right Jack (1959,  Unrated)
178
Captain Blood (1935,  Unrated)
179
Red Heat (1988,  R)
Red Heat
An important entry in a lost genre, lost because they don't make enjoyable buddy cop movies anymore and because the USSR no longer exists. Written and directed by Walter Hill, producer and writer on the Alien trilogy. Contains the deathless line, spoken by Schwarzenegger as Soviet cop Ivan Danko: "Capitalism."
180
The War of the Worlds (1953,  G)
181
In Harm's Way (1965,  Unrated)
182

183
The Magic Box (1952,  Unrated)
184
Lord Jim (2001,  Unrated)
Lord Jim
One of the better screen adaptations of Joseph Conrad's novels. Peter O'Toole may have been chided for playing another Lawrence (Jim is, however, a dissimilar character with a different destiny), but it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Bronislaw Kaper's score is magnificent and altogether fitting with the stirring, nautical overtones of Conrad's tale.
185
Europa (Zentropa) (1991,  R)
