1
Swingers (1996,  R)
Swingers
Favreau n Vaughn are the money! Moments of super-cool and painful cringing. Out-Fucking-Standing.
2
The Breakfast Club (1985,  R)
The Breakfast Club
Docked 1/2 a point for Emilio Esteves' 'Stoned' dance.
3
Control (2007,  R)
Control
Outstanding. From the first minute in, you're hooked right into the world of a pretty messed up mind. The acting doesn't let you down for a second. The characters are beautifully and painfully real. I'm not sure how closely this resembles the truth, but either way it's an intense emotional ride. I've never really been a fan of Joy Division, but now I feel like I at least get what they were about.
4
Stand by Me (1986,  R)
Stand by Me
Sublime.
5
Garden State (2004,  R)
Garden State
Caught me off guard this one. A movie with some real heart, directed with style n grace.
6
Mulholland Drive (2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive
Dream, reality, whatever i still can't unravel it... But it feels like you're sitting inside Lynch's head. Marv.
7
The Machinist (2004,  R)
The Machinist
Momento for the fuckups n weirdos. Gravy. Bale's best movie to date.
8
Carrie (1976,  R)
Carrie
My top horror movie of all time, with a seriously messed up n freakish Piper Laurie.
9
Primer (2004,  PG-13)
Primer
A grownups timetravel flick. Filmed with total realism. Great idea, perfectly realised.
10
Airplane! (1980,  PG)
Airplane!
Surely you can't be serious! I am serious, and don't call me Shirley! The world needs more idiot-fun.
11
Sling Blade (1997,  R)
Sling Blade
Not seen the uncut version of this yet, but the regular flick is pretty blissful stuff all the same.
12
Platoon (1986,  R)
Platoon
My favourite war movie of all time. Powerful and seriously moving. Awesome stuff.
13
The Goonies (1985,  PG)
The Goonies
Ahhh... remember when kids movies were actually bloody good films!
14
Miller's Crossing (1990,  R)
Miller's Crossing
Like watching a moving oil-painting. Beautiful camerawork, great dialogue and a plot so clever you'll cry.
15
The Evil Dead (1981,  NC-17)
The Evil Dead
Lo-fi horror with a sprinkle of comedy. Raimi in his purest form. Not as great as EDII, but damn good nonetheless.
16
Elizabethtown (2005,  PG-13)
Elizabethtown
If only there was some way of skipping dimensions and walking into an entire world directed by Cameron Crowe, then we'd all be happy.
17
The Rules of Attraction (2002,  R)
The Rules of Attraction
Fast and warped with a heaving spoonful of QT. Like Hunter Thompson on speed... err.. that's just Hunter Thompson tho, innit.
18
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Carey proves he's not just a sack of rubberised skin. Great chemestry and a story that on rewatching works even better. Slickly written.
19
Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003,  R)
Kill Bill: Volume 1
QT's take on eastern cinema. Eye-candy to the extreme, Wachowski Brothers, THIS is how you make a kick-ass movie.
20
SubUrbia (1997,  R)
SubUrbia
At long last I got my sticky mitts on a copy of this, even if it is in 4:3 and ripped from vhs. How Linklater gets performances like this from his actors is beyond me, but everyone in this film is spot on. A movie that hits so close to home, whoever you are, wherever you live. The dialogue is so real you can only assume half of it's ad-libbed. Steve Zahn steals the movie, Ribisi is awesome and everyone else is fecking great. A movie about not much at all, but everything at the same time.
21
Before Sunrise (1995,  R)
Before Sunrise
Really liked it.
Beautiful and gorgeous.
Impeccable acting throughout.
22
Support Your Local Sheriff (1969,  G)
Support Your Local Sheriff
Superfast dialogue of the kinda standard you rarely see these days. A simplistic plot, but crammed with characters you instantly love. The ZAZ team behind the Naked Gun/Airplane! team must have loved this movie. Consistent laughs throughout, and not always where you expect them to be.
23
Das Experiment (The Experiment) (2001,  R)
Das Experiment (The Experiment)
I think 'tour de force' is the correct phrase. Unrelenting, edge of your seat, panicdom.
24
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
Hit's the ground running, literally. Doesn't let up, not for a heartbeat, keeps you on your toes and throws you backwards and forwards through fate and time.
25
Angel-A (2005,  R)
Angel-A
Blissful and beautiful. Besson's return to form.
26
The Big Lebowski (1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
Good god almighty. This is just one of the finest films ever made. Bridges best role ever.
27
Made (2001,  R)

Napoleon Dynamite (2004,  PG)
Napoleon Dynamite

33
Wild At Heart (1990,  R)
Wild At Heart
Like a demented trip to Oz. Messed up and marvelous.
34
Blue Velvet (1986,  R)
Blue Velvet
Frank Booth - THE scariest nutter in any movie.
35
Eraserhead (1977,  Unrated)
Eraserhead
Probably as close as we'll ever get to opening up Lynch's head and poking around inside.
36
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
A movie you just wish you could erase from your mind, so you could watch it for the first time over and over and over again.
37
American History X (1998,  R)
38
Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005,  R)
39
Delicatessen (1991,  R)
40
Jackie Brown (1997,  R)
Jackie Brown
Tarantino's finest moment. A quickfire, flashback plot, with DeNiro turning in a performance to rival 'The Dude'.
41
Dumb and Dumber (1994,  PG-13)
Dumb and Dumber
How i love a good nobrainer. A movie about idiots, made by idiots, for idiots. I LOVES IT!
42
Repulsion (1965,  Unrated)
Repulsion
Cinematography to die for, and a rotting animal corpse that you can smell thru your tv. Terrifying stuff.
43
Aliens (1986,  R)
Aliens
I don't like the 'Alien 2' tag they've given it. But yeh, LOVE the movie. THE Best showdown ever - Get away from her, you BITCH!
44
Shaun of the Dead (2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
A sheer delight, for anyone who loves movies, zombie flicks or great comedy. Funniest horrorcomedy since Evil Dead III.
45
Once (2007,  R)
Once
Totally gorgeous. This is what 'acting' is about, for me. Total conviction in their characters and an ability to take them into the harsh reality and normality of the real world. Not a million miles away from Before Sunrise... but with songs... oh, and the songs are awesome, real and totally convincing. A really gorgeous musical, without any unexpected moments where someone bursts into song.
46
Fido (2007,  R)
Fido
Absolute genius, a spin on the Zombie genre that manages to wrongfoot you from start to finish. At NO point whatsoever did I see what was coming next with this movie, from the opening scene to the dying credits, I was kept amused, surprised and delighted. I really can't stand either of the leads, but both Moss and Connolly were *exceptional* in keeping it together. Watch it and adore it... What other movie could have a wife giving a heartfelt apology to a chained up zombie regarding a boy/girl/zombie love triangle! Romance, Laughs & Corpses. BLOODY LOVES IT!
47
Winter Passing (2006,  R)
Winter Passing
Four lost souls reaching out to each other. The perfect movie for a miserable Sunday.
