Charlie Bartlett
by JasonIf you can take one theme from this movie it is that it is one thing to be popular but what you do with it is what matters. An inspirational message, and one who's words really struck home.
This teen movie was mostly overlooked as it did not hit most markets. It was most likely because the competition in this genre at the time was Juno. Although not as great, Charlie Bartlett is by far one of the better movies about the teenager versus the high school social hiearchy. The concept is original, a wealthy teen who has been kicked out of every private school is forced to attend a public institution and soon finds himself as an unlicensed psychiatrist. To get the medication kids crave he goes to the different psychiatrist on his mom's speed dial and reinterprets the symptoms as his own. Of course this means he's bound to run afowl with the principal, who is already not content with Charlie's track record and that he is dating his teenaged daughter.
Anton Yelchin is the best teen actor out there, which should go undisputed. I've seen his work in Alpha Dog and Fierce People and this kid is going places (he's already playing the young Chekov in the upcoming Star Trek and the young Kyle Reese in Terminator: Salvation) as he's not scared to take his acting to the next level. This is the kid to watch out for as he has skill. Although I'm noticing a theme that every character he plays has a tendancy to become a man at some point in the film.
If Yelchin didn't wow me, then I would have to add in the Robert Downey Jr. factor. Yup this was his last role before he dawned the iron armour, and his actting demeanor is serious, as it is humorous. An actor of his generation who is gaining more fans as he progresses. It is ironic that his character, the principal, passes the torch to Charlie; is Downey doing the same for Yelchin?
It was obvious this movie was filmed in Canada without reading the credits, as half the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation make an appearance at some point, that should not undermine the movie's quality. The film has heart, and charisma and should be considered this generation's Ferris Buller.Hey, you should really see this!
