Somewhat random plot, and Paul Dano does not have what it takes to carry an entire movie just yet in my opinion. Zooey Deschanel is of course brilliant as usual in a role tailor made for her.
Would have been one of the best animated movies of all time if that stupid annoying Chinese kid died early in the movie. That prick excepted, this movie has a cast of the most lovable animated characters ever created.
Very interesting and very sexy, with a stellar performance from Penelope Cruz, who plays a self-destructive ex-wife to perfection. Flawless. I had to edit this review one year on upon noticing I only gave it 4.5 stars last year. God forgive me.
A beautiful film that states repeatedly in the first few minutes that it isn't a love story. Well, it is a love story to some extent but not a daft fairytale-styled Hollywood soap. Levitt is brilliant while Deschanel is also pretty good, but what difference is there between the character she plays here and all her other films? The relationship between the two is reminiscent of the one shared by Mark Wahlberg and Deschanel in The Happening. Anyway, great movie, deserves a viewing. Minus points for some unnecessary scenes that merely extends the movie.
A good film, marred by the exaggerations of misfortune that fall upon main protagonist Precious. It's a lot like Lars von Trier's "Dancer In The Dark" except not half as moving nor interesting.
I did not expect such a brilliant film given the subject matter! And thank God for Hitler's death at the end, it was getting a bit tedious watching films where the entire operation gets botched up in order to preserve historical values. Melanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz were truly amazing, and Diane Kruger deserves a mention too. If I recall correctly, there wasn't a single boring bit in the film. Highly recommended for fans and non-fans of war films alike.
Extremely arresting visually with some very impressive ideas. When doughnuts and other junk food start killing people, it becomes rather close to home. Action scenes utterly brilliant, "superfoods" anyone? The plot is of course every bit as predictable as can be expected, but who cares when the movie looks this good and plays this smartly? Highly recommended if only for the culinary circus onscreen.
A slightly dull film that floats awkwardly with no significant aim perhaps. It's pleasantly surprising or shocking at points but as a whole it tends to be a bit bleak. Every frame of the screen with Penelope Cruz more than makes up for this however, and Mateo Blanco's first look at Lena is one scene that will remain unforgettable. There's just something about the way Cruz lights up the screen with her perfection. Her Magdalena is perhaps a career best. To sum it up, very amazing cast, incredible performances but a tad uninteresting.
Absolutely brilliant. I can't quite find the exact words to describe this movie aside from the phrase "much ado about nothing", but even that isn't completely accurate. A beautifully done movie that is interestingly inconclusive somewhat yet makes a strong point. Features a brilliant cast, though I have to say that Viola Davis's performance is highly overrated.
A very interesting premise completely wasted thanks to terribly amateurish execution. The script is horrid, the acting is largely annoying, and the camera work atrocious. Not to mention it employed the "fade to black" effect way too liberally. Sadly, a waste of time.
Very well done, genuinely creepy and seemed rather genuine too, though it lacks any real story or plot development to get things moving. It's just 2 or 3 consecutive chapters rather than an entire book, if you get my drift.
So colourful, explosive, amazing, beautiful, brilliant, confusing, hilarious, uncanny, amazing, amazing, amazing. Definitely one of the best and oddest movies of the year. My one critique? Johnny Depp could have done with more screentime for his lines and mannerism were pure genius. And the story could have used some extra narrative as there was quite a lot of figuring out required towards the end.
