I could not get into this one at all. The way it skipped through the ages to hit every single tragic turn of the century event (the family loses one member who drowned on the Titanic, the other dies in World War I) makes it hard to get into the flow of the film. Plus I also found it powerfully boring. I can't imagine this being the best film of 1933 at all.

This one was nominated for Best Picture in 1929, earning it the right to be destroyed by All Quiet on the Western Front in a year that proves that sometimes, just sometimes, picking the year's best film really is that easy.
It's hard to really evaluate films this old sometimes. I'm sure this one ruffled a few feathers 80 years ago, but it's sort of dated today. Norma Shearer acts well, but I'm not sure there was a great film to be seen here. Maybe 80 years ago, but not by today's standards. Sometimes art is timeless, and sometimes not. This is a "not".

What seems like a 50s campy sci-fi film is actually very intelligent, with authentic techno and psychobabble. Great plot, great pacing, and surprisingly awesome special effects. A true classic
