My Sassy Girl
PG-13
Is this some kind of joke? Much of the humor found in the original was cultural, and judging from the trailer I don't believe this film will be any good.
Update: Just seen it, and it's a really, really crappy re-make. This version just isn't as sharp, or convincing, or even as charismatic as the original. Skip it.

I recommend you see...Firstly, yea this is a recommendation for Blue, or any other Kieslowski work for that matter, which brings me to the point.
I've been back and forth with some of the people who run flixster who say they will not add the Decalogue to their list of films because their sources classify it is a television show.
If you've seen the Decalogue, or know anything about it, you know that yes it was broadcast on polish television in ten episodes akin to a mini-series of sorts. However, you also know that it was intended as one overarching project, not a television show. The Decalogue IS a film, its a film in ten parts. It's also one of the greatest works of film art ever created. It is a travesty that they will not add this masterpiece to the list of films on here.
Flixster is a great place to share films, and anyone who loves film, has a mild interest in it, or even just happens to be alive and privy to a television set should see it. Please write the folks here to get this masterpiece addedposted 1 day ago -

Street Kings
by BrianNot at all original, but pretty good if you just want to switch your brain off and coast, which isn't so bad sometimes.
I do wonder why actors of a certain calibre would do this kind of movie, but who knows? Maybe they are trying to widen their fanbase.
Probably I might inflate my rating because I enjoyed it.
Random gripes tho, I can't resisst: OK, some guys look hot with a mustache, but Jay Mohr looked like a straight up douche. I wonder if that was purposeful... And does anyone else find Forrest Whitaker's fucked up eyelid to be majorly distracting?? Maybe I just have ADD ;)
Worth a rwent.Hey, you should really see this!

An American Crime
by BrianStarts off slow, but picks up steam in a hurry.
This is the kind of film that is truly horrifying because not only could it happen, it in fact did happen.
Catherine Kenner and Ellen Page give inspired performances, but it's the real story that is the star of this film.
Very graphic and not for children under any circumstances, but definitely, watch this!Hey, you should really see this!

Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
by BrianVery interesting and well done documentary on Bayard Rustin, an openly gay civil rights and gay rights activist, active for over fifty years.
The reason that I was especially curious about him is that he was gay for one, and also raised in my neck of the woods.
Inspiring and informative, I was totally engrossed by it.
If any all y'all want to see it, look for it on LOGO.Hey, you should really see this!

Shock to the System
by BrianThere's a little too much cheese in this sandwich, if you know what I mean....
But I greatly respect Chad Allen for being gay and doing a gay movie that is not totally shallow and lame. Ya, there's some cheese, but it's also entertaining, and there's a lesson,
Plus, Mike and I both think he's all sorts of cute, so that's a bonus, haha/
I imagine this film might have a small audience on my list on here, but the ones that think they might like it, will like it.
There's another film in the series, Third Man out, which I haven;t seen yet. Plus I hear there are two more to be made.Hey, you should really see this!

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
by BrianEvery time I see Amy Adams in a role, I love her more and more. She's brilliant in an effortless way that must make lots of actresses very envious. Plus, anyone can see she's beautiful.
Miss Pettigrew is a simple film, but it's also incredibly enjoyable, and has a great cast (I love McDormand and Pace as well).
Just so much fun, it easily delivers, and then some. Really, I see no faults in it, for what it was.
Focus Features is on a role!Hey, you should really see this!

Prom Night
by BrianJamie Lee Curtis is probably pulling out what little hair she has left.
Not only should this film not be considered a remake, but it's also, like, horror-movie-by numbers. There's no suspense, no mystery.
And I wanted to stab Brittany Snow in the tit because she's so annoying. Not that I was ever a fan of hers to begin with.
STALE! Go rent the original.Just go rent the original if you haven;t seen it. Skip this.

Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema
by BrianI agree with the comment of a friend on here that, while still good, this documentary is not as good as The Celluloid Closet, Its scope is not as big and it doesn;t go into as much detail. I got the sense that this documentary was made moreso in an effort to promote films and less to educate the LGBT community.
That being said, it was still good and reminded me of a lot of films I still need to see. And the interview snippets were good.
Good for any gay man or lesbian, or any fan of film in general. If you are interested, this is not as good as The Celluloid Closet, but still decent.

Death Race
by BrianThis movie is action from start to finish and is never ever slow, It's filled with eye candy for the women and gay guys on my list (except Tyrese who's totally fug).
It's not brain surgery, but you shouldn;t expect that. In fact, it's totally what it advertises, and one I'll have to have in my collection when it comes out.
Only small complaint and that in the end it's wrapped up in too nice of a pretty little bow, But oh well, great fun all the way!Hey, you should really see this!

The Thief of Paris (Le Voleur)
by OreoA nice and elegant vengeance. Belmondo gives another fine performance, and the whole setting was quite accurate and pretty. Even though it's a little bit slow, it's still quite enjoyable.

Funny Games
by SarahDirector:Michael Haneke Released: 1997
Stars:Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Muhe, Arno Frisch and Frank Giering
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Country: Austria

Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.
Funny Games is another one of those films everybody bare me has seen. Finally I found it in my supermarket this afternoon and just finished watching it. I have to admit that it toally blew me away. Funny Games is far more than a Horror, it's also a depiction of just how often Media violence is in our society and how much we take it for granted and almost let ourselved be entertained by this. Pure genuis!
The film opens up with a helicopter shot of the family arriving at their holiday home on the motorway. While watching this we are shown just how close the family, setting us up for one hell of a ride. This voyeristic technique makes us wonder why we are sitting here watching this and almost feel slightly instrusive on the family. That's the genuis of Haneke. I must admit that I didn't go too much on Hidden but this is abosolutly amazing. I can see some similarities in the two films there.
I know a lot of people will either love or hate this film I can see why but there are many different menaings to this film. For instance as I said beofre why, as a viewer you are sitting down to watch this and also questioning the viewing public as a whole. It also shows us parts which you might not fully be shown in an American film and almost plays upon that. Haneke uses emotions of the family almost as bait. The two men constantly play upon why the couple are crying and feeling this way and twisting it for their own amusement. There's no manipulation here as you might often find in a US film, you are given the opotunity to switch off, as one character says and question just how much violence you can take. Which I think is why this film is NOT pointless as some people have written here.
The characterisation in Funny Games is brilliant and key to the viewers understanding of the film. Both of the two main leads; Anna and Georg Snr are a middle class couple and very likeable indeed. As a viewer you can instantly releate to them and their son Georg. The film's path is not what you would expect as you really do warm to the characters. Oddly the representation of the two men: Paul and Peter are ones of such charm and sophistication that you don't feel that they're the villian on some stages. I'm going to admit that I did find the character of Paul very attractive indeed and didn't for a second think anything less-but that's another story entirely! Incidently Peter is also a man full of charm but is presented as less intelligent and an odd character.-we see this when Peter continuously calls him "fatty" which he hates.
Funny Games is also intelligently written and well paced. 1 hr and 40 mins flew by and left me utterly speechless afterwards, which of course is genuis on Haneke's part. Funny Games cleverly plays with the conventions of filmaking and asks the audience:
We're not up to feature film length yet. You want a real ending with plausible plot development".
Also has Paul looking at the camear and talking to the audience, which also gives the character as sense of arrogance to him and almost tells the audiene that he's in charge. What was the most clever thing about this film was the re-wind scene which did leave me slightly disturbed at what I had just watched.
Funny Games is one of the most disturbing films that I have seen and so cleverly written and filmed it's unbelievable. It'll leave you feeling horrified at what you've just watched and leave you wondering the why you watch violence in the media. Funny Games is a clever film and one which I highly recomend.Highly recomend everyone to watch this a.s.a.p

Mirrors
by BrianThis actually kind of freaked me out, and that doesn't usually happen, which was nice.
And a hell of a lot better than the other recent remake-of-Asian-horror films out there.
Does anyone else think Paula Patton is like a young Halle Berry?
A little slow in the beginning, but give it a chance and it will creep you out. Very fun! :)Hey, you should really see this!

Felon
by BrianA lot better than I thought it would be, and very engrossing.
Made me feel stupid tho because I kept wondering when Dolph Lundgren (sp?) was gonna show up, and then I finally realized that soehow I got Stephen Dorff confused with him, haha, go fig, my mind is mush lately.
Watched this a while ago (few days ago). Pretty good, but at the same time been done before.
Still worth a watch, for sure.Hey, you should really see this!

The Dark Knight
by DerekSo after all the hype finally starts to subside I give in to curiosity...I consider myself a lifelong Batman enthusiast and an avid reader of the lore...the Dark Knight is perhaps the only "superhero" I have ever really truly embraced (sans Robin) ... considering that deep down he's really just a man-conflicted that just happens to have the means and the mind to be something extraordinary...but considering Christopher Nolan's first entry into this fascinating character's world I have to admit I approached this follow-up with a certain degree of skepticism...I wanted this film to work just as badly as every other die hard Batman fanboy to be sure...the director borrows heavily from the pages of some of the finest comic book scribes to ever approach the Caped Crusader...the guys that gave Batman a reality check and threw him into a noir world that helped define the cult icon that he is today, Nolan and company capture this feel rather skillfully at times but also of course take great liberties in melding their own arch and perhaps lose subtlety in their cinematic vision and the results are frankly rather uneven almost jarred together... and Christian Bale, with all his talent almost seems to resent wearing the suit too damn much to bring any real depth to his role and instead continues to go from suave and arrogant Bruce Wayne to an alter ego that moves stiffly and speaks with a contrived growl, not exactly the graceful crime-fighter I like to imagine...something just seems to be missing in his portrayal to me... and on to his nemesis Joker, the late Heath Ledger does his best Jack Nicholson impersonation...the real joke is that the masses so easily proclaim it an Oscar-worthy performance because of his untimely death...all-in-all over-hyped comes to mind but the right word is dissonance.
My thoughts on this summer's biggest blockbuster...

I recommend you see...A movie so terrible I'm not even going to review it.
Seriously, this is garbage on the lowest level. It exists for two reasons only: 1) the purpose of plugging a tv series; and 2) making money of Star Wars fans/suckers.
The original Star Wars is a franchise that really succeeded early on because we thought its campiness and silliness was deliberate. With the prequels we saw that perhaps Lucas just couldn't write, either that or the actors couldn't pull it off. Whatever the case, he somewhat redeemed himself with the decent Revenge of the Sith, only to totally alienate and exploit his fans with this absolute piece of trash. Its lazy, poorly animated, and dead in the water. The voice acting brings phoning it in to a whole new level.
I advise everyone to stay away from this. I saw this for free and I still feel ripped off. Please, let the franchise die with what dignity it has left. Don't give Lucas and company your money for this lazy schlock.posted 9 days ago -

Dead Man's Shoes
by xGaryThis bleak tale of revenge set in a small English town sees Paddy Considine leaving the army and returning home to extract brutal revenge on a group of small time drug dealers who abused his retarded younger brother while he was away. This is an unusual revenge thriller as it often looks more like a slasher flick; Considine is obviously an unstable murderer who has been trained to kill and he systematically executes each of his victims in a very horror film style way. Except in this case his victims are a bunch of unsympathetic scum bags who you can't help feeling probably deserve their fate. In this way the film throws up many mixed emotions as you're never quite sure who you are supposed to be rooting for! But the real kick in the gut is provided by Shane Meadows; he directs very much like a documentary photographer cataloging the grim reality of working class small town life. The actors involved are ugly. They have bad hair and cheap clothes. In other words they look like REAL people, not Hollywood's glamorized, sanitized version of them. As such you feel you are right there in the thick of it, actually witnessing these gruesome events rather than just watching a piece of entertainment. It won't be to everyone's tastes as it's quite a tough movie to sit through because of its extremely grim subject matter, but ultimately it's a very powerful piece of work.
