China Seas
by Veronique"china seas" is directed by tay garnett who also helms the classic noir "the postman always rings twice"...it has every gable/harlow formulic elements adopted from their former collaboration "red dust": oriental background, racist insinuation, sexist inequality, man's madonna complex with sensual blonde and prim brunette, luscious harlow swoons over reluctant gable whose heart is taken by the demure brown-haired lady, then eventually harlow captures gable back with a twist.
clark gable is gallant captain alan gaskell who discards aside his former flame ,showgirl chinadoll (harlow) with a foul humor, while he re-encounters his long-lost crush for years, refined British dame sybil (rosalind russel). chinadoll attempts to entince gaskell's attention again while she finds him enamour of his english girlfriend who he plans to marry. harlow pulls it off clumsily by insinuating gable's crude disdemeanors at the past on the dinner table, growling about her wretched heart in his cabin, making excuses to approach him by putting her cigarettes in his drawer. she tries everything she could but gaskell still dismisses her as obnoxious, a desperate girl who could hook up with any sailor. while rosalind russuel behaves tastefully as a obedient love interest who withdraws wisely at their confrontation. as harlow groans "i ain't like that english dame who gets brought up to say the right thing, i speak whatever inside my mind"
meanwhile wallace beery is jamesey, chinadoll's courting admirer who schemes to backstab captain gaskell with chinese piracy then captures chinadoll as his own since she has been frequently demeaned by gaskell. infuriated by gaskell's insult when she sneaks to his cabin to warn him, chinadoll steals the key of arsenils for jamesey. then the ship gets robbed for the first time after the trainwreck of typhoon. gaskell's foot also gets swayed tightly by oriental turturer. the villain commits suicide while the blonde bashes out her agony of love as treason confession "yes! i steal your key and give it to jamesey, i would have stood backward back with you, figure it out yourself why i don't, you teach me something i have never known about myself, when a woman can love a man right down her fingertips, she could hate him the same way as well...go call your cop, if you could ditch it out then i could take it!!!!"...then the fabulous line of wallace beery in his last breath would be "loving you is the only decent thing i have ever done in my whole life, even it's obviously a mistake."
"china seas" is more clever than "red dust"..."red dust" is more of gable's concession to the bourgeois values by giving mary astor away to gratify her husband's dreams of marital happiness, and harlow is more like a trophy of solace, a substitute of ease, a woman closer to his proteriat upbringing would make a better spouse as he shamelessly cheers "we're all rotten people in this stinky country". additionally astor's role seems like a pretentious closet bitch who likes to pose goody-goody, and that role has been brought back to life by grace kelly again in its remake "mogaboo"
but "china seas" is a recuperated love of pathos, it is harlow's ignited hatred which hunts gable back as avengeful betrayl is somehow an intensified way to express affections. when he utters sympathetically "you hard-headed crazy little fool", he's hers. so he decides to resign his position in court to rescue harlow from hanging, and also nullifies the chance of entrance into a higher society, "yes! i love her!! but not the way i do you"...as he glances her being sent to the police, she looks up to wave farewell, he smiles warmly then the movies closes.
"china seas" has engrossing melodramaticity, gut-wrenching villainy and the enchanting oriental backset to gloss the scenes. the first shoot of panoramic view of a thousand ships in the china seas is impressing, and the picturesque set of hong kong dock is turbulently prosperous. it has kaleiscopic scenes of orient despite the usage of its disdains to its people, such as the bitter-tongued annoying oriental lady as the stereotyped asian cosmopolitan who humuliates harlow by calling her the cheap liquor before the delicate wine, the lives costed by typhoon catastrophe are all asians who get run over by the giant machine and gable sneers at the chinese pirates who are also the negative oritental stereotype as insidiously inscrutable. put racism and sexism aside, "china seas" is vivid and vibrant with enough dramaticities and exotica to pay audience's interests. and this time, gable/harlow romance is managed in a more chivalric way, and the script does come up with a more proper twist to nobilize clark gable, and more "romantic" in its partriachic pattern.
the wardrobe of jean harlow's is also another fashion accomplishment by adrian, and some dresses harlow wears in "china seas" should have become stylistic milestone. adrian pastiches the styles of occident and orient well in several night gowns with dragon and pheonix upon the backside. except the one dress which bares harlow right breast(a blatant gratitude for male audience), all the other brightful suits are sorta neat and lovely. besides, clark gable also looks very dashing in white navy suit of captain when his "diamond in the raw" phallic image mellows.it's the best among the gable/harlow collaborations. the black with a white phoenix on the back and the dress she wears in the "a woman could love a man right down her fingertip"...and in the flick, jean harlow wears a wig becuz her trademark blonde hair is in its awful shape due to repeated dyeing. and the orient backset is an escapist purpose to console the audience in the depression area. it's highly watchable with enough dramatic plots.

Into the dim lit, bare walls of my world,
You entered, bringing light and life to me,
The vivid colors, painted with a swirl
Of wit and charm, of personality,
With tender care, you added comfort, warmth,
And images that line the now bright walls.
I look upon them fondly, bringing forth
A thankfulness that you walk in these halls
With me; our friendship has become a part
Of my world now; it has its special place,
Within my being, life, and in my heart,
Your name hangs right beside your smiling face.
Rememb'ring just how drab these walls had been,
I have to thank you for the light, my friend.posted 20 hours ago -

Na Kamalei: Men of Hula
by JDA fantastically engaging documentary that has as much beauty and grace as the subjects and the dances. In this brief film, we learn the history of hula, the man responsible for bringing hula back to the men and the gentlemen who have become a troupe who learn and then compete for a grand title.
The man who brought this amazing group together is Robert Cazimero. The competition that he works his all-male hula group is called the Merrie Monarch Festival. Cazimero's group is the oldest group in Hawaii and their journey took place in 2005. That was also the 30th anniversary of the group?s existence. This was a great production which shines with the island's beauty and the humanity of the precious Hawaiian culture. It is so amazing that you will quickly see why this became an award-winning documentary. My only reason for not giving this doc a five-star rating was that it clocks in at fifty-seven minutes. I wished it was longer.Hey, you should really see this! It is appearing on some PBS stations in the U.S. If you have access to Public Broadcasting Service, check the internet for the program called "Independent Lens." This is a great program as it showcases many newer documentaries. This title is also available on DVD. Worth your time if you like the power of dance and the gorgeous setting of the Hawiian islands. Aloha everyone. I'll be back in California after a brief visit to Montana!!

A Free Soul
by Veronique"a free soul" is the very flick which gets clark gable some female attention with the notorious scene of him pushing norma shearer roughly to the couch for three times! blatant violence on woman, but endearing gable is always excusable since he's doing it for the sake of love.
norma shearer plays a spoilt rich gal jan ashe who defies her family by dating mobster ace wilfong(gable), emancipated by her alcoholic father(lionel barrymore) who encourages her to be free. so she sneaks to the mobster's residence shamelessly as if she's his mistress for months. infatuated by jan's tumultuous lovemaking, wilfong falls head over heels in love with jan, then he consults her father's approval for the marriage proposal...due to the gap of social status, the father finally sombers up and condemns jan for hanging around with wilfong. so jan makes a bargain with dad that if he quits booze, she would quits gable. then the father and daughter disappear for three months in wilderness for eradication of liquor which fails eventually. and norma shearer returns to the dangerously charismatic clark gable while he's infuriated by her abscence, then he threatens her to marry him or he would announce their affair to ruin her social reputation. in the end, shearer's another love interest leslie howard comes to the scene to shoot gable to death, gallantly rescuing her from gable's villainy.
clark gable is still in his mustacheless period and credited as the third in the cast, but his overwhelming caveman-alike machismo thrills millions of women then while he growls "you're mine and you belong to me! don't you ever run away!!!" and his disdemeanors to push norma shear in fur is highly appreciated by the audience in depression period due to the animosity to idle rich, and gable's contempt to norma's social superiority was approved by proles who disdain the condescending loftiness of upper class. besides, gable's character has been devoted to shearer who is just ficklely having a good time slumming, and she's contrary to whoever posts disapproving opinions on her. when her family refuses to accept gable, she throws herself to him, as gable declares his determination to marry her, she ducks away. and he's traumatized by her frivolosity but too proud to admit it. so his rage is perfectly justified, and he wants her so he's gonna rob her away to be his! this tough kind of savage manhood is considered utterly sexy by women then.it was made in the depression area. when norma shearer was still alllowed to behave sluttishly in movies before the demure lady image in the "the women"...gable was not major star then but his rough machismo attracts millions of women then when he pushes norma shearer to the couch...women were thrilled when he shouts "you're mine! and i want you! so you belong to me! don't you ever run away!"

The Loves of Carmen
by Veronique"the loves of carmen" is rita hayworth's excerpt of sex appeal in the end of 40s. the marvellous novelty is that the music score doesn't include the cliched opera tune of carmen but a bunch of swifty catchy flamenco which rita hayworth dances feverishly along, especially in the scene of gypsy squad. hayworth sways her long skirt and you glimpse her fair lengthy legs during the vivacious choreographic sequence as if she's caught on fire, sizzling with millions watts of charisma despite she's full-clothed under the gypsy constumes without baring her crevice but the tender neckline of hers is enough to intoxicate you.
hayworth incarnates into the love godess carmen who embraces the epicureanism of ephemeral fun for life, love as you want, do whatever you want for the sake of ultimate gayety in spite of morality and commitment. supposedly, the role of carmen is a nymphamaniac tramp, but she is queen bitch who dominates men under her skirt. but hayworth's interpretation transcends her into something tinted with a oblvious naivety to a degree, a charming ingenue who disregards the consequence of her deeds but live with all her passion of life. besides hayworth's sensuality is never too blatantly exposed, considering the routines of bombshell liks monroe or bardot, the feminine accesories of hers remain concealed for most of the time except several crucial scenes her legs become the catalysis of don jose's doom. mostly she allures you with her brillaint smile and the shiny marble grin of hers. (her teeth look so incredibly beautiful indeed when she grins)...even in some scenes, rita curses, glares and spits but she would never leave you an impression of being vulgarly chessy.
don jose is played by glenn ford who is dashingly handsome to match hayworth whether ford is polished enough to be the well-bred don jose. ford does perform well as the don jose with boyish admiration for carmen, a man of pure vigor that could burn for love. the technicolor hues are cheerfully spirit-reviving that is appropriate to embellish the background of carmen's tumultuous affairs (or simply just romances. she only appears as a sporty heart-stealer, not really specifically a horny phallis-stimulater. oh. pardon.)
above all, some further notes would be the wardrobe designer jean louis and the hairstylist helen hunt who help to accomplish rita's refinded devilish allure on her gorgeous constumes and flamy wavy hair. of course, mostly the music score is worthy of applaud for composer mario castelnuovo-tedesco. and the choreographer is robert sidney who might be the hispanic male who dances with hayworth in the gypsy squad.
at the last scene, the camera angle is also well-shot with hayworth laying upon glenn ford over the stairs in distance then a black cat passes the flatform as fatalistic closure of the story.<object height="355" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JaYU4xGNayg&hl=en"/><param name="wmode" value="transparent"/></object>
hayworth is sizzling when she dances, all the attention would be centered around her in the form of her feminine moves. words cannot be effective as your eyes could witness, take a look yourself.posted 8 days ago -

The Big Sleep
by Veronique"the big sleep" is howard hawks' well-exerted star vehicle for humprey bogart and lauren bacall who have formed their sizzling chemistry in "to have and have not"..but hawks also has a crush on bacall who prefers the elder bogart, so this trio causes great tension on the production set since hawks is sour that bacall, whom he catapults to stardom and whom he looks forward having a fling with, has been captivated by the embrace of humprey bogart who is also having nuisance with his divorce then. so naturally the trio has been messed by their own private affairs but what makes "the big sleep" function so wonderfully, the sheer romantic flame ignited in the private lives of its major stars, bogart and bacall.
bogart is now philip marlowe, another detective hero by ramon chandler who also creates the mythical sam spade in bogart's "maltese falcon" which contributes to his stardom after a decade of obscurity as small-time mugs on screen. marlowe is now dealing with general sternwood's willful daughter's misdemeanors which involve murders of jealous and mobster entrapment, meanwhile marlowe falls in love with another sternwood's daughter vivien (bacall) who attempts to save her trampy sis at any cost by aloofly dealing with gambling crooks herself, interfered by marlowe who is determinated to set the records straight completely for her even he has been beaten up, blackmailed and also risks his life for it.
let's put it this way, the best pleasure of watching "the big sleep" is not really about how intriguingly the plots develop but seeing humprey bogart flirt with several females, from the two sternwood daughters to bookstore woman clerk who sheds off her spectacles to lure bogart and the female taxi driver who volunteers to be "his girl" then tosses a business card to him with a hint that "i'm more available at night" then bogart hands a generous tip "sugar, it's some for you to buy candies"...of course, the shrew bogart trully desires would be lauren bacall who mocks his "un-impressive height" in the beginning defyingly while bogart bombards her back insolently as well. then she's impressed with his reluctance to flatter her after our big man teaches her a lesson to be good!
there're numerous classic dialogues of sexual connotations which are gonna set records at cinematic history...one about the horse races, and how she enjoys watching him racing in the front and he wanna take the helm to bridle her. one scene in her bedroom while he suppresses her hand from slapping him and the lightening strikes outside the window, "i don't like to get rough at this time of night" "you're going too far, marlowe" "it's harsh word to throw at a man while he's walking out of your bedroom"....the most titilating one would be their kiss in the car with bacall exclaiming "oh! do it again! i like it!!"...even moments like her sitting on his desk, trying not to scratch her knee, being detected by him "go ahead and scratch it, i don't mind!", it's full of witty humor, then she walks over the doorway, confused by how to open the latch then looks back at him suspiciously "oh that was not intentional!" marlowe's office's door is sorta designed to halt clients who just wanna hurry to escape interrogation which also happens in "murder, my sweet"
whether bogart is suitable as philip marlowe is not an revelent issue since he has a personality bigger than life, and he's merchandising his machismo flick by flick, with his wisecracking sarcasm, romantic gallantry to acquire the hearts of beautiful dames despite he ain't massive. even bogart literarily plays it directly with the lines delivered just like his own words, sassy, sneering and uncompromisingly tough. in a brief, his charisma is too idiocyncratic to be obliterated by the roles he takes, so every role bogart plays feels just similiarly like bogart. despite bogart and bacall only utter love in one scene on the car, but that could be magnified into a thousand times since you could tell he's pulling everything off just for her sake, he could spend 200 out of his 500 salaries just to buy off the information which is gonna get her out of this corrupted deal. as he's hectic to instruct her how to handle the crime aftermath, she askes "how about me?" "so, how about you?" "nothing you could fix" while the police siren rings its signal approaching.
plus. elisha cook jr. from "maltese falcon" also appears here as a romantic sap to enhance the "tough guy with a soft center" concept in this flick that tints "the big sleep" with more gentle hues while men are ballsy bravados who rescue their women from the clasping thorns.most of humprey bogart's charisma is his enigmatic romantic undertone beneath his hard shell of masculinity, but he won't be made of a sucker while the woman's no good. he treats the ladies generously just a man should be. he's macho despite he's not really tall. in some scenes, he looks odd with a big head and skinny body beside the villain. once roger ebert parallels bogart with woody allen's romance as man who is not willing to be limited by his outlook but still avidly chasing the beautiful dames by all means.
lauren bacall looks at her best in the wardrobe of "leah rhode"...and she does showcase her singing talent in the casino with her well-reputed husky voice.

If These Walls Could Talk 2
by Veronique"if these walls could talk 2" is a political propagenda of lesbianism, seperated in three partitions of decades with lesbians in three different modes as old-time closet school-teachers, the 70s transvestite activist and the contemporary homosexual marriage.
the first one is more emphatically sorrowful since the elder lesbian couple just suffer from a practical issue of house mortgage since they cannot get married to deserve the inheritage like the heterosexual couple blessed with the legitimate approval of marriage. they recluse from society with passivism without interfering and protesting on street for their rights, then you could peek some marlene dietrich alike tuxedo party in the yellowed pictures.
then the time shifts to the radical 70s with chloe sevigney impersonating the transvestite dyke in boyish clothings and you could see chloe making love to michelle williams in nudity which is a bit nauseating and over-the-top. as chloe sevigney's "brown bunny" falletio event, and this is another glimpse of her daredevil willingness to comply any cinematic challenge. it leaves you wonder if it's cleverly worthwhile or appropriately done in chloe's trials. besides the explored field on this episode is mainly on the functionablity of lesbian sex between one tank dyke and one lipstick lesbian.
the last tale would be sharon stone and ellen degeneres married together in the modern time, attempting to purchase some semen for ellen to inject into sharon stone so stone could be conceived with "their" baby. they demonstrate how much they're in love and how well they conduct together to broadcast some user-friendly lesbian bond notion. somehow you cannot help but feel sorry that sexy sharon stone gets confined by mannish ellen. why wouldn't she just get laid by some real guy instead of sticking to her lesbian commitment? somehow peculiarly absurd. another political poise of this genre.
inevitably the viewpoints stated here might be biased in a way, but a good flick would transcend the surroundings to win audience's heart in every category instead of being made for a narrowed group of people. but the first tale of elder schoolteachers are indeed emotionally infiltrating with their authentic sadness which is very sympathetic and that could be recognized universally.it is NOT a recommendation but a stated opinion. anyway, there're three episodes in one flick. only the first one is touching and bitterly saddening..the rest is just toying with sexual politics cliches you hear way too often. homosexual marriage or the lesbian sex of one dyke and one lipstick.
anyway, make your own choice.posted 10 days ago -

Iron Man
by JensIron Man always having been one of my favorite Marvel heroes I waited a long time for this movie and thankfully it did not let me down. Robert Downey Jr. is the perfect Tony Stark, delivering hilarious lines by the dozen as arrogant, rich asshole and yet makes you care for the character. It's this humor that actually makes this movie so much more enjoyable than most of the recent superhero flicks. Jeff Bridges, almost unrecognizable without hair, is a wonderful sleazy and greedy antagonist and the rest of the cast just as excellent. Stark's development and change of front is believable and well acted, the special effects outstanding. The plot is full of little hints and jokes for the Marvel fans, Stan Lee returns for another mini appearance. The awesome scene after the credits even makes me hope for my favorite Marvel project possibly coming true sometime soon. As for this movie: the most fun I had with superheroes since the X-Men films. I want more and soon.
Hey, you should really see this if you like comic film action!
