Just One of the Guys Just One of the Guys PG-13
Who doesn't love a good high concept 80s flick. I'm a sucker for enjoying films like this even if the overall film itself is a bit rubbish. The 80s gave birth to movies that were directly aimed at teenagers who wanted comedy without the whole thing being a bit too silly or overly risque. And this gives you just that.
Joyce Hyser plays Terry an attractive highschooler who just isn't take seriously. She feels that this is mainly down to the fact that she is female. When she loses out to a couple of guys for a journalism summer scholarship she decides it's the last straw and dressed in her brothers clothes and sporting a new hair cut she enrolls at a neighbouring school and enters the same competition. Spending most of her time as a guy, she makes new friends and meets boys who are all convinced she's a bloke.
The girl dressed as a guy concept has been done before but i found that this was quite an original take on the whole thing.
Hyser does a pretty good job. And although it's irrelevant, I thought she looked a hell of a lot better as a guy. There is something quite masculine about her features so she was a very good choice for the character and her performance was definatly good on the grand scale of things.
As for the supporting cast, they were all blend into the background with the small exception of the guy who plays her brother. (I don't know the actors name and can't be bothered looking it up).
He plays a sex crazed teen with only one thing on his mind, getting laid. He brought loads of laughs to the film and the actors performance was excellent.
I found the last scene to be a little too fantasy styled. But I suppose with a film from this decade it's only to be expected.
As a prediction I can see this film being remade in the near future as that is the way Hollywood seems to be going these days with all their remakes and i think it would translate well with the youth of today.
I suggest checking it out, it's a fun movie.

You will have no idea how long i've waited to see this film. So, i'll just have to tell you. Around 3 years now. Seems like a long time to obsess about seeing a film, yes.
Sci-fi films have been pretty thin in recent years. Very few original ideas and the ones that do get made there are only a select few that are any good.
You'd think I was a massive sci-fi fan, i'm not really, I've just been feeling let down about the lack of material the studios have been producing on the subject.
Personally I thought this low budget indie flick produced by the BBC and HBO was excellent. It did everything that a low budget sci-fi film should aim to do. It didn't over do it with special effects that turn out to look rubbish. In fact, special effects were very minimal in this movie. And I liked that. It didn't need all that extra stuff to put across it's point. And that is pretty admirable in a time when CGI is thrown at just about any movie that will take it.
The premise of the film is about three friends with rubbish jobs at the local theme park. Two of them are 'nerds' as they like to use in the film, and the other is just an average lad who thinks his friends need to grow up and get a life. The whole film is pretty much shot in their local pub and specifically around the gents bathroom where a rip in time is causing havoc as the guys try to not only get back to their own time but catch up with time as well.
As the title suggests the movie raises all the different issues that are associated with time travel, i.e. the grandfather dilemma and the chaos theory. All three guys tackle these different problems, trying to make sure they don't change their pasts.
I love Chris O'Dowd, he's done a lot of work on British television so if your American it's unlikely that you'd have heard of him. But he really is a tremendously funny guy. I found it slightly distracting that they made him tone down his Irish accent as if you ever hear him speak normally, it is blatantly obvious he's trying to stifle it. Despite that, he does a brilliant job with a role that doesn't rely so much on comedy.
Anna Faris makes a nice addition to the cast as a woman from the future. I think it's obvious that to make a British film sell in America and appeal to the American audiences, you have to have one of their own in the film. And because I love Faris so much I won't really complain about it. I love that they also joke about this as well with O'Dowd's character pointing out that everyone in the future is American. Which was bloody funny on many different levels.
I highly recommend this time travel flick to anyone who is feeling let down by the lack of sci-fi on the shelves lately. I don't see how you can be disappointed by this one.

I don't think I could compliment a film anymore. First of all Danny Boyle is one of the best directors ever. Ewan McGregor is one of the best actors ever. Together they make one of the most perfect actor director teams ever. Danny really brings out the best in Ewan and vice versa. The first scene of Renton and his friends running down Princess Street in the center of one of the greatest citys on the planet is just iconic. This film is like a photograph. It captures what the 90's were like for a lot of young people living in Edinburgh at the time. For me this is my favorite film of all time. It has everything. And it was released on the exact date of my 6th birthday. I think you'd have to be mad, and not in the good way, not to like this film even a little.
Withnail and I Withnail and I R
I love this film so much you'd probably find it hard to comprehend. I love all the performances and the plot itself. Richard E. Grant gives a performance of a lifetime and one that nobody should miss out on for the world. I love that just about every line in the film is something you would want to quote. "We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here, and we want them now!" I love all the things that are involved in the making of the film as well. Like the scene where Withnail downs a bottle of lighter fluid, the director filled it was vinegar to get the right reaction from Grant. I also have to mention the stunning artwork from Ralph Steadman who uses his famous Gonzo style which was also used in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Which also happens to be another favorite of mine), and was a good friend of Hunter S. Thompson who I also just happen to love. This is a must see film and I really can't stress that enough.
