Trainspotting (1996,  R)
Trainspotting
I don't think I could compliment a film anymore. First of all Danny Boyle is one of the best directors ever. Ewan McGregor is one of the best actors ever. Together they make one of the most perfect actor director teams ever. Danny really brings out the best in Ewan and vice versa. The first scene of Renton and his friends running down Princess Street in the center of one of the greatest citys on the planet is just iconic. This film is like a photograph. It captures what the 90's were like for a lot of young people living in Edinburgh at the time. For me this is my favorite film of all time. It has everything. And it was released on the exact date of my 6th birthday. I think you'd have to be mad, and not in the good way, not to like this film even a little.

Withnail and I (1987,  R)
Withnail and I
I love this film so much you'd probably find it hard to comprehend. I love all the performances and the plot itself. Richard E. Grant gives a performance of a lifetime and one that nobody should miss out on for the world. I love that just about every line in the film is something you would want to quote. "We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here, and we want them now!" I love all the things that are involved in the making of the film as well. Like the scene where Withnail downs a bottle of lighter fluid, the director filled it was vinegar to get the right reaction from Grant. I also have to mention the stunning artwork from Ralph Steadman who uses his famous Gonzo style which was also used in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Which also happens to be another favorite of mine), and was a good friend of Hunter S. Thompson who I also just happen to love. This is a must see film and I really can't stress that enough.

Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001,  R)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Surprisingly I really enjoyed it. I really thought I wouldn't. The chemistry between Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna is fantastic. Its really believeable that these two teenage boys are best friends. Maribel Berdu is very good. I do have to say that the ending is just perfect. Loved it. Mexican cinema lovers should definatly see this film. I love it because it sends out great messages about living life to its full.
4
Lost In Translation (2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
Its hard to say exactly what I love about this film but there is definatly something special about it. Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors ever. He's a very funny guy and a brilliant actor. Comedy films are what he does best but I think this film shows there is something more to him. This film made Scarlett Johansson and for a very good reason. She is outstanding. The plot is wonderful. Its set in a beautiful city and I think you really get to see how amazing it is. I'd give my left arm to know what he wispered to her at the end as well. I really loved that touch. That even though the film is over it leaves you guessing about what he said. I could watch this movie a million times and never get fed up with it. Definatly one of my favorite films ever.
5
Scream (1996,  R)
Scream
First of all I don't care what people say about this film, I love it, it really is one of my favorite films ever and i'm going to prove that it isn't as shit as some people make out. It's a work of genius. It really is a lot deeper than is first made out. To begin with i'm not doing a plot summary, many of you will probably have already seen the film and the rest of you can read the summary provided on the page. The use of exposition in this film is over done and people keep mentioning that. Craven tells us many times that Sydney's mother was brutally murdered but I don't think it is as simple as Craven repeating himself. He is referrring to other horror films, as he does a lot throughout the film, and the way the usually horror film over uses exposition. There are so many levels to this film. I think the first level is the obvious and straight one of the ordinary slasher film. The second level being all the movie references spread throughout the film. There really are loads, close on 100. The main one being Halloween. Level three being the fact that we are watching a slasher film full of slasher film references and but Craven is contradicting every bit of what he does. For example when Sydney says that she doesn't like horror films because they are always about a big breasted girl running up stairs when she should be running out the front door. Contradicting this by running upstairs when Ghostface comes after her. Another example of this is when they are all at the party and Randy the film geek pauses Halloween and starts telling everyone the rules of horror films. The first being don't have sex. While he says this Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich are upstairs having sex. Second being you never drink or do drugs. Everyone still in front of him is drinking including himself. Third being never say i'll be right back. Matthew Lillard then gets up and says i'll be right back. Craven cuts to Courtney Cox and she says the exact same thing. Craven sets up these rules and then tears them down. Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich are alright. Courtney Cox is back and so is Matthew Lillard. Everyone that was drinking is alright. Third level being the connections between what is going on and what happens in the film Halloween. Eg, when Randy is watching Halloween and shouting it's behind you to Jamie Lee Curtis when Ghostface is wandering around behind him and the audience is also going it's behind you to Jamie Kennedy. Level four is that this film works well beyond all the excitement of references, parody, slasher genre. It works alone as a who done it. They throw in a tone of red herrings. It also works better than a lot of other horror films when deciding who it is because a lot of films explore the obvious, the boyfriend, the best friend, the brother, the mother, the father and in the end of those films you find out it was the character you only saw once at the very beginning you worked in a corner shop. The rest of the Scream films do this as well. I love that in this film, everything is there for a reason. Everything in a room is relevant. That is why I have seen this film about one hundred films. The first scene is just amazing. It was Drew Barrymore's idea to play Kasey because it would make the viewer think that anything could happen. Boy did that work. It really is a must see film, and one of my favorites. I don't care what people say about it I have given you many reasons why I love it without spoilering it and I have pleanty more that would spoil the ending.

Wild Things (1998,  R)
Wild Things
Completely blown away by this film. I love films that have twists and some do it well and others don't suceed. This surprisingly was amazing with it. About half way through the film they just keep hitting you with more and more information about what is going on. I'll warn you now, if you're reading this review and have not already seen this film don't read any further, just watch it, i'm going to spoil everything about it. You seriously will regret it if you carry on reading. I think that I love this film so much because you can watch it a million times and it never gets old. I've seen it loads of times this week just piecing everything together in my head and i'm not getting fed up in the least. I love that this film does have it's flaws, no it isn't perfect but none of that matters because of the amazing characterisation and plot. The actors all give brilliant performances, the best of course coming from Neve Campbell. Seen a few of her films and I loved her ever since watching her in Scream. Yes ok, so the whole thing looks like a soft core porn film but at the same time the intelligence of it just oozes from every scene. I love that it is so overly complicated that it works so smoothly. You have to watch this film more than once and the second viewing is even more fun as you pick out all the little clues that the director gives you along the way. I really want to write a plot outline because i've heard many people talking nonesence about the ending and the way it all fits together in the end. I fear that this review will turn in to a novel though. A fuck it, i'm writing a long ass review anyway. I'll use actors names to avoid confusion and i'm starting with the event that would have happened first but you don't actually hear about until the end. Kevin Bacon is sleeping with some girl in the swamp where Neve Campbell stays. Campbell's boyfriend Davie steps in when Bacon slaps the girl around a bit so Bacon shoots him dead. Campbell sees the whole thing so Bacon arrests her on a drugs charge and sends her to juvy. Campbell calls Dillon's character the guidence councellor for help but he's too busy sleeping with Theresa Russell's character. Campbell plots to get back at everyone who has ever wronged her. She blackmails Dillon to go along with the plot and befriend Bacon, him believing the plot is to make money by exploiting and eventually killing Campbell and Richards. Campbell knows he'll go for it because it involves killing her which he'll want after what she saw. Campbell then gets Dillon to involve Richards who happens to have a massive crush on him. She believes it is Dillon who planned it. They set up the rape and report it, getting Dillon arrested. Bill Murray's character then comes in as the lawyer for Dillon. At trial, Campbell reveals the rape never happened as planned and Dillon is released. They both then set a deal with Russell for close on $9 million as settlement for the trouble. Campbell then gets Dillon to tell Richards and Bacon that he plans to get rid of her. Richards not knowing that Bacon is in on it in the first place. Campbell fakes her murder with the whole teeth thing and heads out to the Caribbean to wait for Dillon. Dillon gets Bacon to frame Richards for the murder of Campbell but instead he kills her and shoots himself to make it look like defence. He is then fired and heads off to the Caribbean after Dillon. They meet up on Dillon's boat Dillon tries to kill him but doesn't suceed. Campbell is revealed to be alive and shoots him with a spear gun. Campbell then poisons Dillon and knocks him into the sea. Murray then meets Campbell and hands over the money from the settlement minus his cut. Bacon's partner then speaks to Campbell's "grandmother" at the end of the film who reveals that Campbell's mother was a Van Ryan making Campbell, Russell's half-sister and aunt to Richards. Campbell was an illigitimate child so the Van Ryan's dumped her mother in the swamp where she drank herself to death leaving Campbell with the people that looked after her. I warned you if you have not already seen the film not to read this review so if you did you ruined it for yourself. Hope that clears up all the messy comments from people that didn't understand the ending. Wow this review it long. Sorry people. Basicly I love this film.

Funny Games (1998,  Unrated)
Funny Games
What a film. This is the first Michael Haneke film i've ever seen and after watching it I am desperate to see his other intense films. This review will probably be quite long as there are so many different things that I feel I just have to mention because it is all so important and just builds up the intensity that Haneke is creating. The first shot you get in this film is an ariel shot of the family's car and boat on a trailer. They are playing a game with classical music and this is the point where Haneke shocks the viewer for the first time. A non-digetic heavy metal track cuts in for the opening credits. This is quite startling in this peaceful car journey and it signals that things are not going to stay this way either. The next scene I have to mention would have to be when we are introduced to Frank Giering's character known mostly as Peter. This scene is pretty important when telling the viewer about his character. He drops by the family's lake house to ask for some eggs and introduces himself as someone staying with their next door neighbours. The first thing I noticed about him would be his white gloves that he is wearing. It doesn't seem like anything important and to be truthful isn't important to the rest of the film but it is just something that tells you there is something that isn't quite right about him. He is well dressed, looks like he is about to play tennis, and gives the impression through his speech that he is a little dim. Susanne Lothar's character invites him in and gives him the eggs as requested. He thanks her and goes to leave, then without Lothar's character or the viewer seeing he "drops" the eggs. This is important because there are many things in this film that the viewer does not see and it is those things that put you on edge the most. He explains that he is clumsey and asks for more eggs. By this point you can see Lothar's character beginning to get a little creeped out by the character. He then gives her many reasons why she should just give him more eggs. She puts up a little bit of a fight but not really much. Whiole putting them in a bag for him this time he knocks the phone into the kitchen sink. He appologies and finally leaves, leaving Lothar's character thinking, that was a bit odd. Then she hears a noise at the door and goes to check it out. She finds Peter and another man in the hall. This is when a few significant things happen which result in her husband and son coming back from the lake to see what is going on. I won't say anything more about that though so as not to spoil it. Just a few more things to mention though. First of all being the names that Arno Frisch and Frank Giering call themselves. Geiring and Frisch introduce themselves as Peter and Paul but Paul on a lot of occasions calls Peter, Tom. This doesn't make much sense until (only the once though) Peter calls him Jerry. They also refer to each other as Beavis and Butthead on a number of occasions. I can't really thing why they do this to be honest. I have to mention Frisch's talking directly to the viewer as well. This happens about twice throughout and is actually rather creepy. He says to the viewer I think you're going to enjoy this, or something to that effect which is disturbing because you're screaming at him in you're head no i'm not. I loved that fact that a lot of the most disturbing things that go on, on this film, you don't see. They always happen behind a wall or just to the side of the character and all you have to go on his the horrified looks from the other characters. I loved that Haneke doesn't follow the usual guides to suspenseful films. Everything about this film is anti Hollywood and in my opinion better than most Hollywood productions. The last thing I'm going to talk about is the non-digetic sound. Because other than in the credits at the beginning there isn't any. This adds to the terror you feel while watching this film. Because if you are having a horrible experience, the last thing you hear is intensity creating music. In this film, when Haneke wants to create intensity, he uses silence. I think that sums up the films well as it is the things that are not there that make it such a terrifyingly awkward film to watch.

Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
I don't usually watch foreign films but this one is excellent. Actually it's better than excellent its awsome and i'm using that word in it's full sense not just freely like most people do. Most of my favorite films are pretty average and nothing special and its more of a personal thing but this is a masterpiece and everyone should watch it.
9
City Lights (1931,  Unrated)
City Lights
So far, my favorite of Charlie Chaplin's films, and i've seen a fair few. I love everything about it. The humour is brilliant and I challenge anyone not to laugh because you won't be able to. It's also another film with his famous character The Tramp in it so right away I knew it was going to be great. Then there is the emotional factor in it. It's so sweet the way he goes out of his way to help this girl. The last scene is a classic one and I came close to tears. It truely is amazing and so touching. Another must see masterpiece from the brilliance that is Charlie Chaplin.
10
The Cat's Meow (2001,  PG-13)
11
Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
I know that I loved it. Everything else i'm not quite sure about. It was weird, and sick, and perverted and somewhat brilliant. The cinematography is just beyond words. The acting is top notch. The plot is a little disturbing but original and enjoyable. The film really draws you in. By the end I was slightly confused but in awe at the same time. This really is a must see film for everyone. It really does deserve more credit as well, i'm ashamed of myself for waiting so long to watch it.
12
Pride and Prejudice (2005,  PG)
Pride and Prejudice
I seriously love this movie. The Jane Austen story is one of her best and I really think this film does the book justice. The acting is brilliant. One of Kiera Knightley's best performances in my opinion. The chemistry between her and Matthew MacFadyen is really intense and makes the film really enjoyable. It really does have everything you would expect it to have and more. A must see for everyone. I think it's the ultimate love story.
13
Donnie Darko (2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
Studying this film in class so hopefully my next review will be a little better.
14
My Own Private Idaho (1991,  R)
My Own Private Idaho
Excellent film. This is one of Keanu Reeves best movies and it is probably the only one that proves he has a lot of talent. River Phoenix, such a waste of a fantastic actor. Both guys are very sxc in this film as well. Loved it. One of my favorites.
15
A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
Stanley Kubrick has to be one of the best directors of all time. I makes me sad to know that we're never going to see another work of art produced by him. Malcolm McDowell is brilliant as Alex. I don't think it would have been possible to find anyone better. I love this film and believe that everyone should see this film before they die.
16
GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas
My previous review for this film was pathetic considering how much i love it. This film was at the very top of Total Film's 100 best movies (Check out my movie lists). This is the pinacle of gangster movies and every other Genre of film as well. The cast is fantastic. Robert De Niro - what can I say, the guy is an amazing actor and this is one of his best films. I'd say his second best film after the Godfather 2 personally. Ray Liotta is a brilliant actor and in my opinion this is his best film. Joe Pesci is an extreamly funny guy and in this film it is no different. One of his best film also. The plot is fantastic. I don't think I could say anything bad about this movie. It really is one of the best and people will be watching it for years to come. Personally I think that 1990 was a great year for film making. This film proves it. You'd be mad not to want to see this film, seriously.
17
Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
Really good film. Robert De Niro is such a great actor and this is one of his best films.
18
American History X (1998,  R)
American History X
First of all i'd like to express my anger about just writing a novel about this film and then having lost everything. *grrr* This film is very hard to write about because it is such a delicate issue that is relivent to everyone. To me, the message of this film was that racism is a product of ignorance. The shocking thing about this is the actual use of propaganda. When the viewer listens to Derek's speeches they are actually drawn in by what he is saying which is what happens to a lot of rascists. The stereotypes of these people are also not used in this film. The rascists are well-educated and rational. Their arguments seem to make sense. Then in the end when Danny is killed is wraps up the film's main message very well. That violence has nothing to do with race. The director used the term "cycle of violence". I think this isn't a must see film, it's a compulsory watch. It needs to seen because of it's modern relivance.
19
The Godfather (1972,  R)
The Godfather
One of the greatest movies of all time. Marlon Brando's performance is awe inspiring. This film is definatly in my top ten movies of all time. Al Pacino's performance is amazing as usual. This film, for me is flawless.
20
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
My review for this was pretty weak when I first watched it, so this is my second review attempt. Although I think it will not justify the content of this film. This is Edward Norton's best performance in my opinion. And i'd just like to say I loved Rounders and thought he was amazing in it and i've seen American History X and I loved that even more but this film just tops them all. Whatever I write will never be anywhere near enough. This is a must see film for everyone, no arguements. It doesn't matter if you are against fighting or not. Either way watch this film. I've never been a fan of Brad Pitt but he is amazing in this film no doubt about it. The plot is just perfect and I don't think it could be anymore perfect. One of my favorite films of all time and it should be your's as well.
21
Donnie Brasco (1997,  R)
Donnie Brasco
My first review for this film really didn't justify just how great it is so this is my second. I really believe that everyone will love this film. What isn't there to like? Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. What more could a person ask for out of a film. The two apart and amazing actors and the bloke that brought them together is a genius. The acting in this film is amazing. One of Johnny Depp's best performances. Al Pacino has made a lot of excellent films and this one really is no different. Now, getting away from the excellence of the actors. The plot. I've read the book and if you have not I suggest you do. Just incase anyone doesn't already know, this is a true story. Even without the great actors in it, this film would still be excellent. I truely love everything about it. I don't think I can say anything else to persuade you to watch it. Let me know what you think if you read this review then go and watch it.
22
Edward Scissorhands (1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
This is Tim Burton's best film ever. I really believe he'll never be able to top it. It also has to be one of the best films ever, definatly in the top 50 for sure. Johnny Depp's performance is outstanding. No one could have done it like him. I love the way that Ed doesn't need to speak because he says a million words with only his eyes and facial expressions. Winona Ryder gives a brilliant performance as well. The scene where she asks Ed to hold her and he says he can't goes down in history as one of the best ever. I really love this film.
23
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998,  R)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
My second favorite movie ever. (Below Trainspotting). Hunter S. Thompson was a genius. RIP. He was an inspuration to a lot of people and his books have a special place in my life. The film really compliments the book well and I think that is all down to Johnny Depp and Terry Gilliam. Terry was the second choice for derector after the first one quit and I'm glad he did. Johnny Depp is perfect for the character of Raoul Duke. He was good friends with Hunter so was able to perfect the character on an uncanny level. Benicio Del Toro compliments him brilliantly and is also perfect for the character of Dr. Gonzo. The cameos from Cameron Diaz, Gary Busey, Christina Ricci and Tobey Maguire is brilliant and they worked their characters really well. An excellent must see movie.
24
Pulp Fiction (1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
What a classic film. It was like a benchmark for films make in the 90s. I don't know quite why but I always prefered Resevoir Dogs. Still, it's definatly one of my favorite films. I like the odd structure of the film which really hadn't been done on such a big level before. All the characters are just amazing and I like that none of them seem to stand out too much when it comes to main characters. I suppose it would really come down to Bruce Willis' character or John Travolta's character. I also like that Vincent dies halfway through. I read that Tarantino wanted that to happen at the end but the studio wouldn't let him kill the character so he changed it so he would die but still be alive at the end. I love the pairing of Vincent and Samuel L. Jackson's character. They work together well and the characters work together well. Tarantino really kick started Travolta's career after a bit of a dry spell. Although Christopher Walken only has one scene I have to mention him because it really is one of his best performances and such a memorable scene. The dialogue is just amazing and something that Tarantino does so well. This film is quoted and paradoid all the time. That really shows its impact on modern cinema. Definatly a film to see before you die.
25
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
Amazing film. The cast is just unbelievable. Usually certain actors stand out in a film but I found all of the actors fighting for attention on the screen. Each dominating different parts in different ways but spectacularly. Bruce Willis' performance was flawless as usual. Benico Del Toro's performance was outstanding. Eliiah Wood was fantastic. Clive Owen was great. Jessica Alba was brilliant. Josh Hartnett, one of his best performances. Mickey Rourke was fantastic. I've never been a fan of Brittany Murphy but her performance was pretty good. I don't think i have anything bad to say about this film. Only good. I love the comic book style. The black and white with vivid colours was amazing. The effects fantastic. I could sing this movies praises all day but I think I better stop now.
26
The Usual Suspects (1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Loved it. Fantastic film. The ending was just amazing. I personally didn't see it coming. And they got me twice. I thought it was just about to end when they spring you with the second ending. Simply beautiful piece of writing. Kevin Spacey was fantastic. Benicio del Toro - Well it has to be one of his best performances. Stephen Baldwin really surprised me. I've never thought highly of any of the Baldwin brothers but he did a wonderful job. I still can't get over the ending though. Didn't see it coming at all. This is a must see film for all film buffs no matter what your taste is.
27
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977,  PG)
28
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
I love all the Star Wars movies.
29
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
What can i say it is just a fantastic movie. One of my favourites.
30
The Godfather, Part II (1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
Probably the best sequal ever. I would say i would rate both films exactly the same. Neither better than the other. Yet another masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola. Al Pacino's performance was outstanding as per usual. Robert De Niro was awesome as usual. I could not say anything bad about this film. Definatly one of my top ten favorites of all time. And i've seen quite a few movies. This one is in a league of its own along with the first Godfather film. This film has only one fault and that is the missing pressence of Marlon Brando RIP. Thats the only thing that sets the first one appart from this. But this is still amazing in another way. Anyway I could sing this movies praises all day if i wanted to but i think i'll stop now. For your sake.
31
Reservoir Dogs (1992,  R)
Reservoir Dogs
Great film. Another master piece from Quentin Tarantino.
32
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
I often wondered if Martin Scorsese could top his other films. I think he just did. This has to be one of my favorite films ever. Jack Nicholson is just fantastic. One of his best performances. Leonardo DiCaprio stole this film in my opinion. His best performance so far in my opinion. Matt Damon was just brilliant. Infact the whole cast was brilliant. I don't think i've ever seen a film with such a great cast. Mark Wahlberg is amazing and I think the ending is just perfect. Its a shame that Leo's character dies but its a good twist. I love that Matt's character gets what he deserves in the end as well. I have to say, i love everything about this film. The plot is just so original with lots of twists. I don't think I could ask for more in a film.
33
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
I demand to know why i've not seen this film before. This is a brilliant film and if you've not seen it then I strongly suggest that you go out and figure out some way of watching it, whether its renting, buying or borrowing it makes no difference but it really is a great injustice to yourself if you don't. A must see film for everyone. This movie proves that Brad Pitt can act from now on I don't want to hear anyone bad mouthing the guy. Even I had my doubts but after seeing this movie I have no proof to back it up. Morgan Freeman is fantastic as usual. I wouldn't expect anything less from him. Gwyneth Paltrow is average. She doesn't play a huge part so I wasn't expecting much from her. Kevin Spacey is outstanding. I really have a lot of respect for him. He's definatly one of my top 10 favorite actors and its performances like this that give me reason to like him so much. I don't think i've seen one of his films that I didn't love. So, what are you waiting for, go watch this film now if you haven't already.
34
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men) (1957,  Unrated)
12 Angry Men (Twelve Angry Men)
Simple yet brilliant. Henry Fonda is outstanding. I don't know why I put off watching this film. I'm regreting it now though. Excellent performances from all the actors. In my opinion undoubtably one of Fonda's best.
35
Festival (2005,  Unrated)
Festival
I love this film so much. It really is a funny film that is really refreshing. It will make you laugh. The comedians in it are all brilliant. There isn't one that I dislike. Chris O'Dowd is a fantastiic comedian. One of my favorites it has to be said. The guy doesn't get enough credit. He's not on the cast list on Flixster but you really should check him out if your into comedy. He plays Tommy O'Dwyer in this film. I love that you really get a feel for the Festival. If you haven't been I highly recommend it. You will have a great time and meet lots of great people from all over the world. I recommend this film to everyone it really is brilliant.
36
Before Night Falls (2000,  R)
Before Night Falls
I bought it because it had Johnny Depp in it but after the first twenty minutes or so I realised that i had stumbled upon a masterpiece. I love this film. It is a quitely brilliant film that is very funny. Getting Johnny Depp to play two characters was just brilliant. He is perfect as the cross dressing in mate and as the colonel character. Javier Bardem is outstanding as his character and I feel he doesn't get enough credit for it. More people need to see this movie.
37
Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Loved it. Has to be one of the best Batman films. All the others had a sort of comedy feel to them but this one is definatly more serious which makes it a whole lot more enjoyable. Christian Bale's performance is brilliant as always. Katie Holmes didn't impress me but I wasn't expecting her to. Cillian Murphy is a brilliant actor and in this film it is no different. This is a must see film for everyone. Even if you didn't enjoy the others they cannot be compared.
38
28 Days Later (2003,  R)
28 Days Later
Brilliant film. Danny Boyle is probably one of the best British directors ever. I usually hate horror movies. I takes a lot to impress me, I'm not the kind of person that gets scared about a film. This one doesn't scare me but I love it nonetheless. It has to be my favorite horror movie so far. I can't see any other horror film impressing me the way this one does any time in the future either. The acting is beyond brilliant. Cillian Murphy does an excellent job as does Naomie Harris. Another thing I loved about it as well, was the way it was shot. The cinematography was pretty damn good if you ask me. The plot is perhaps not complete original but still, it's amazing. I love the extras on the Dvd as well. The different ending are fantastic. To be honest though I think I actually prefered the ending where he dies though. It is just so much more powerful than the one they stuck with. You expect him to cough a bit then be fine. It's a real shock when this doesn't happen. This is a must see film for all no doubt, even if your like me and aren't really into horror.

The Motorcycle Diaries (Diarios de Motocicleta) (2004,  R)
The Motorcycle Diaries (Diarios de Motocicleta)
It's a brilliant film about a brilliant man. The chemistry between Gael Garcia Bernal and Rodrigo de la Serna is wonderful. The reason I love this film so much is that we know it is all completely accurate. The real Alberto Granado was there during every second of filming. I don't think the film would have been the same without him. Ernesto Guevara was a brilliant man and just about everyone knows about the legend that is Che but few know about him as the young medical student that changed his life to help people. This is a very heart felt film that lets you know exactly what he was like. Che Guevara is an idol to be, I admire what he stood for and agree with it completely. I have to mention the very last scene in the film as well. The beautiful shot of Alberto Granado watching a plane taking off just the way he did when he said goodbye to Ernesto. It's an iconic shot that I will remember forever.

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian
My favorite Monty Python film and the others follow close behind. These guys are like the pinicle of comedy. You'd have to be mad not to love them. Everything about this film is amazing. You'd have to have no scene of humour not to find it funny. A must see film for comedy lovers.

Duck Soup (1933,  Unrated)
Duck Soup
I've only seen a few of the Marx Brother's comedies but so far this is the best. And for any of the others to be any better they'd have to be bloody brilliant. The plot is quirky as usual and you can tell just by reading the plot that it is going to make you laugh. But even knowing it was going to funny doesn't prepare you for the amount of laughing your likely to do. The Marx brothers are master comedians and this film is a prime example of why. I love everything about it and it really is a worthy film to make it into IMDb's top 250. A must see movie.

Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer) (2001,  R)
Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer)
Excellent horror movie. Lots of blood and guts and everything else you would expect from a Japanese horror film. Takeshi Miike is an excellent director and really makes this film what it is. This isn't a film for those that have weak stomach's or those that have just finished eating. I loved the scene where he cuts of his tongue, it's just so disturbing yet wonderfully done. Really realistic. A brilliant must see film for those that are into horror.

Chaplin (1992,  PG-13)
Chaplin
I think it's important to know that I am a huge Charlie Chaplin fan. Robert Downey Jr. as him was just perfect. When choosing someone to play an important historical figure it can be difficult. Somehow the director got it spot on when choosing Robert Downey Jr. His performance was just stunning and his portrayol of Chaplin was pretty damn good. Because not many people knew what he was like away from the camera and his biography turned out to be a load of rubbish it must have been hard for him to get it right but I think he did. I would call this a must see film for everyone even if you hated Cahplin because here you get to see another side to him. A side that no one saw. A side completely different to that of the one on camera that was always making people laugh. From this you'll learn a lot more about a caring and brilliant man.

A Night at the Opera (1935,  Unrated)
A Night at the Opera
I love this Marx brothers film. It has the best scene from any of their movies in it. The one when they are on the ship and all these different people are in the room doing different things. A classic scene and a classic film that is a must see for everyone. The Marx brothers are one of those comic groups that will never get old and will be remembered forever. They are one of the all time greats.

The Gold Rush (1925,  Unrated)
The Gold Rush
Another amazing film from Charlie Chaplin. One of his funniest as well. I love the scene where he eats his shoe. It's just brilliant. It may be simple but the way it's carried out makes you laugh so hard. His facial expressions in this film are brilliant as well. A work of art and a must see film.

Modern Times (1936,  Unrated)
Modern Times
I don't think that I really need to explain my decision to give this film five stars because it's pretty self-evident. It's a wonderful and another masterpiece from Chalie Chaplin. Who doesn't love the guy? When I use the word genius I always mean it and this guy really was one. This is a must see film for everyone.
47
The Kid (1921,  Unrated)
The Kid
Charlie Chaplin's first feature film and in my opinion one of his best. It's such a sweet film and just about everything in it is perfect. The acting, the plot the gags. And I know I probably shouldn't mention this but I really can't help myself. It's about the guy in the recent reviews list who has written that he doesn't want to see this because Chaplin was a "closet paedophile". My first objection to this statement would have to be that he spelt paedophile wrong. The second would be how can someone be a closet paedophile. It's not something you would want anyone to know about so closet is just unnecessary. The third would be the most obvious and that is that he wasn't. I have no idea where the hell the guy got that from but it's complete bullshit. My arguement is over now and I'll once again state that this is a brilliant film.

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Thanks to the many people that recommended this film. I've been dying to see it but had a little trouble getting a hold of it. Excellent must see film. Stanley Kubrick is one of the best directors that ever lived and I love all of his films. This one was no different. The whole concept of it is very relivent in todays society. It raises some very good issues as well as being extreamly funny. Stunning performance from Peter Sellers. His alone makes the movie.

M (1931,  Unrated)
M
I think this film is a work of art. Everything about it is just beautiful. Even the plot. I doesn't just speak about one murderer but all the people that todays society would consider sick. Personally I believe that people like Peter Lorre's character should be pited more than anything else. I don't believe that anyone would choose to be someone as twisted as that and no matter what you do to them it does not reverse what they have done. In this case it doesn't bring back the dead children. An extremely controversial film in itself and then you realise is was released in the 30's says even more about how much ahead of it's time it really was. The Nazi's banned it because of what it spoke about. I have not seen many German films but if they are anything nearly as good as this one then I must watch more of them. Peter Lorre's performance is just outstanding. The direction from Fritz Lang is also pure brilliance. It really isn't a film to be missed. This film will keep you gripped right to the end and left wanting more. A must see film without a doubt.

Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001,  Unrated)
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru)
Such a brilliant film. One of the best Japanese films i've ever. Seen and that is saying something because i've seen quite a few and they have all been amazing. I've been dying to see it for ages so it was great to finally get a hold of a copy. And as everyone said, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. The acting was just amazing from all the young actors. Takeshi Kitano gives an outstanding performance as he always does. He never fails to deliver. Disturbing and brilliant. Horrifing and outstanding. It takes everything to the extreme but somehow doesn't over do it. Everything works so well. It's a must see film that has to be seen even if you have to kill someone to get a copy of it.

Vincent (1982,  G)
Vincent
There are so many different things about this film that I love. The first of which would have to be that right from the beginning it is made clear that this is a type of auto-biography from Tim Burton. You can even relate him to the character. Burton imagining himself as the wonderful Vincent Price. That is the second brilliant thing about this short Tim Burton film. The little fact that it is narrated by Vincent Price. I believe i'm probably not the only one who has a thing for his voice. I'm not quite sure exactly what it is but it just seems to draw you in no matter what he is talking about. Therefore it works so well with this. It's a must see short film.

The Breakfast Club (1985,  R)
The Breakfast Club
Ok, so you'll probably think i'm kidding but i'm not, this film has been playing on a loop in my dvd player for two days now. I've lost count of how many times i've watched it now. I think this film relates to just about every teenager in the entire world. Five kids and if not one or more relates to you. The acting is brilliant as is pretty self-evident in their careers that are now doing really well for all. I love Judd Nelson in this film especially. I think his performance is emotional and funny at the same time. The casting guys did an excellent job with his character. It's a must see film and probably the best film of the 80's.

Disturbia (2007,  PG-13)
Disturbia
I received a lot of mixed reviews about this film. Some were really good, others were saying it wasn't worth watching at all. I chose to ignore the latter and watch it anyway. And i'm glad I did. I thought it was brilliant. An exciting thriller that not only keeps you guess but teases you by confirming your suspicions then giving you lots of reasons to doubt yourself. Then telling you what you thought in the beginning was actually right. The acting was brilliant from all. Shia LaBeouf once again gives me lots of reasons to think he is going to be huge and become very well known in the next few years. Aaron Yoo was completely unknown to me but I loved his performance. His character was fun to watch and he brightened up the scenes he was in. David Morse made a brilliant mass murderer. He was just the right kind of creepy and gave you loads of reasons to doubt him but at the same time you were still thinking maybe he is just a normal guy who is a bit weird. A must see film in my opinion that is very underrated.

Transformers (2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
I loved it!!! Exceeded expectations. The reviews were amazing and I was expecting to enjoy it but not this. It has to be one of the best films of 2007. Michael Bay's direction was spot on in every scene. The CGI was just mind blowing. The standards are just being raise continuously. I remember when they used to look pathetic now they look real. I know that's the point but it is hard to imagine something so complex and hard to create looking so perfect. The scenes where they actually transform and all the different parts move around must have taken a lot of work to create. The performance from Shia LaBeouf was just amazing. He's turning into a really excellent actor who you can tell will be going places in the next few years. I was glad to hear that he would be in number two as well. The other performances were really good as well. I'm not usually a blockbuster kind of person. I mostly like indie films but I have to say this really was amazing.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005,  R)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
When I first watched this film I really wasn't expecting what I was about to experience. I suppose I expected a predictable crime drama with average performances from two actors that were trying to break back into mianstream Hollywood. This wasn't what I got. This film is basicly a film noir without the black and white and without the synthetic lighting. Everything else pretty much follows the film noir theme. I was blown away by the strong performances from Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer as I wasn't exactly expecting it. This was the first of Robert Downey Jr's film I had seen so I wasn't familar with his work and to be quite honest i've fallen in love with his performances right from that first moment. I'd seen a few of Val Kilmer's films and I guess I thought of him as being a bit washed up and past it, completely forgetting about previous brilliant performances. And this film proves it, he isn't past it, he still can act, and to a very high standard at that. Then there is the comic edge in this film because it really does make you laugh. The one liners and the comic narration from Downey Jr. make the whole film a real pleasure to watch. I've seen it thousands of times now and it never seems to get old. I'd recommend it to anyone that likes intelligent comedy and to anyone that likes a good original film. Definatly a must see film.

Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
Stunningly beautiful yet tragic and sad. I have not read the book but I certainly intend on doing so. Joe Wright directed this so brilliantly just like he did with Pride and Prejudice. It was just amazing to watch. I love the scene on the beach where nothing important is happening and it isn't affecting the characters in anyway but he felt compelled to put it in. You watch all of the soldiers just waiting. A real insight sequence that although irrelevant summed up with film well. The best part of the film would have to be the acting that came from Keira Knightley and James McAvoy though. The made a great pair and the casting agent did a brilliant job in choosing them because they had everything that was needed to make the film work. Just enough chemistry, the characters down to a tee and the acting ability to portray all the emotion needed. I think I may have found a new favorite film in this award-winning masterpiece.
57
L.A. Confidential (1997,  R)
L.A. Confidential
A brilliant piece of filmmaking. I don't quite know where to start with my review. James Ellroy said after writing the book that he wrote it so that is would be impossible to turn into a film. Maybe that's the reason this film is so excellent. It's very complicated and there are lots of things going on all at the same time. I think fully understanding the film only comes at the very end and even then for most it may require a second viewing before everything will completely fall into place. There are a few things that make this film what it is and the most important would probably be the performances from the three main detectives; Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce. I loved that all the characters are clearly defined and set out with very different personalities which is also very important in the case of the film as a whole because it's complicated enough without adding more things to work out in your head. Kevin Spacey plays Jack Vincennes, the egotistical and vain character that has his fingers in a lot of pies. It really is a stunning performance from him and it's yet another performance that proves Spacey really is an excellent actor. Russell Crows plays Bud White. His character is a bit of a brute but he cares at the same time and is underestimated by the other officers. Also another star performance from him, which led to many great films. And the third detective is played by Guy Pearce. I have to say that this is a great cast but at the time of the movies release it wasn't because Pearce was unknown. And I think, although it is difficult to choose, he is the star of the film. He plays Ed Exley who is a sqeaky clean done by the book detective. I always found my eye drawn to Pearce throughout the film and to be honest it's him that I would have handed the Oscar to, not Kim Basinger. Her performance was alright but by no means the best in the film. It's an excellently planned and beautiful film that boarders on noir because of certain characteristics but without the brainlessness of noir. Definatly a must see.

Some Like It Hot (1959,  Unrated)
Some Like It Hot
Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. I love this film so much. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are fantastic together and the bounce off each other so well. Marilyn Monroe finishes off the cast perfectly. I've not seen many of her movies but i'd predict that this has to be one of the best. The direction is brilliant, a real work of art. It's a classic must see film.

Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional)
Wonderfully thrilling film from Luc Besson. Everything about this film is just excellent. If your after a film to be utterly entertained by without it being brainless then this is the film for you. Jean Reno gives such a brilliant performance. He plays the caring and beautiful character Leon. Throughout the film he gives you the impression that he's simple and naive but at the same time being completely aware of everything. He's a very complicated character that is a pleasure to watch. I like the way there is nothing glamorous about his livestyle. There are many films that make out the hitman livestyle is glamorous but this film doesn't. He lives a simple life with a plant that he loves more than anything else on the planet. Natalie Portman's first role and to be frank I really feel sorry for her. It must be horrible as an actress to peak so soon in your career and never meet that point again. This proves she is a very capible actress but so far she hasn't had the chance to show that talent since this film. But I have to say the star of this film would have to be Gary Oldman. He plays a bent copper who is a drug addict and racketer. His performance is just utterly mindblowing. He does this thing where he splits open the capsule, swollows the powder and does this hit reaction that is just so weird and brilliant. His character is literally psychotic. This really is Oldman at his best. He also devilvers the best Fuck line at the end of the film ever. The relationship between Jean Reno's character and Natalie Portman's character have a very odd relationship which throughtout the film makes you intentially uncomfortable. The exchange of names in the beginning of the film makes you feel the same has Leon who blows his milk all over his face. That is what you'll do if you're drinking when her line is delivered. The ending of the film is great and i'm not going to say too much about it because I don't want to ruin it for those of you that haven't seen it but it really is excellent. It's a must see film that comes highly recommended not just by me.

Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.) (1950,  Unrated)
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.)
An amazing film about the forgotton age of silent film and the effect it has on one forgotton Hollywood actress. This film is definatly art imitation life as the backstory to this film is just as interesting as the film itself. Gloria Swanson was a forgotton silent film star and Erich von Stroheim was a director that made a film that destroyed his career. The acting is just so amazing and it definatly deserved the Oscars it won. I loved Buster Keaton's cameo although didn't like the term they used, calling him a has-been is not really a term assosiated with Keaton. He's a legend. Brilliant film that is definatly a film to see before you die.

The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Wow. I was not expecting this at all. I thought it would be good at most. But it really was amazing. I loved the way it was structured a lot. In most cases something like that would be too confusing and really wouldn't add to the film much but more take away from it as you'd spend so much time trying to work out expactly what was going on and when it was meant to be happening. But for some reason it was what made this film extra special. Christopher Nolan should be proud of that achievement because it had the potential to be a disaster. The high quality acting from Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman is once again just brilliant. Not really much from Scarlett Johansson but when she was around I did enjoy watching her. I liked that it had a few really great comedy moments as well as being quite a sad film. I loved the scene where Bale pretends to mess up the trick in front of the guard but actually chains his foot to the floor. That really made me laugh out loud and again when I re-watched it. Michael Caine brought the whole film together nicely with his narration. The twist I have to admit caught me off guard and I really wasn't expecting that at all. I like how they used flashbacks to fill in parts as well to explain how it was done. Extremely clever film that I definatly waited too long to see. Don't make the same mistake.

American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty
Sam Mendes has made quite a few really great films but this one stands out as the best for sure. Beautifull shot it's name really lives up to expectation. Kevin Spacey gives another excellent and outstanding performance. It is really hard to pick one out as the best due to there being so many but this one would definatly be in the top ten. He gives a very powerful performance of a man who is unsatisfied with his current life. I love that just about everything is open to interpretation. Nothing is certain about what goes on and who the characters really are. That makes everything so personal to the viewer which is always important in films like this. It's a must see film for those of you that are yet to see it.

Schindler's List (1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Such an amazing film about an amazing man. I think this story would have been a real challenge for Steven Spielberg because of how important this man is to a lot of people. He really had to do him justice. And he did. A wonderful portrayale of a man that just wanted to help people. Probably the best true story ever. They either tend to be good or rubbish but this one exceeded good it is excellent. It's a must see film, no question. I doesn't matter what kind of films you like, you'd find it hard not to enjoy this even though it lasts such a long time it just grips you.

Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
Completely and utterly loved it. I really had high expectations about it as I was absolutely thrilled when I heard Robert Downey Jr would be playing the multi billionaire. I tried really hard not to get my hopes up but I just couldn't help it. Fortunately I didn't need to worry at all. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. Robert Downey Jr was just amazing as I knew he would be. Perfect for the character in so many ways. Jeff Bridges was excellent as the villain. I loved that the plot didn't try to hard to be anything that it wasn't. A lot of superhero films are guilty of this but Iron Man didn't even touch on it. Nothing was over done. They stuck to the story and nothing was unnecessary. So far it's my film of the year and it will be hard to budge, which worries me as the date for the Dark Knight release approaches. This is definatly a must see.

True Romance (1993,  R)
True Romance
I was really hoping I would love this film after reading all the reviews of people who loved it. So glad I did. The plot was just perfect. With this, they could have got it so wrong and they didn't. It could have been overbearing, stupid and cheesy but it was none of those things. The performances were all excellent, with some huge actors getting very small roles but working with them brilliantly. I've never been a fan of Christian Slater and felt slightly reserved about him being in this film but this has completely changed my mind about him. He was perfect for the part and together with Patricia Arquette, they really did make a great couple. The chemistry was all there which, for this film was rather important. The smaller characters pulled the film together and really made it what it was. Christopher Walken was brilliant as the mob boss. Chris Penn made a really great cop. Brad Pitt as the stoner room mate was classic. Gary Oldman as the pimp just made me laugh. And Val Kilmer as Elvis just threw me off the whole film. The whole character of Elvis was a little odd but for some reason it worked. I worried about the ending most of the way through the film as it just kept building and building and I didn't want it to be a dud climax. But it wasn't in the slightest. Completely worked. Definatly a highly recommended film.

Clerks (1994,  R)
Clerks
I just watched this film after not seeing it in years and now I remember why I love it so much. I love Kevin Smith's films and this really is one of the best. I love that when he makes a film he really gets involved in everything about the film. He directed it, he starred in it, he edited it, and he probably did lots of others things to do with production as well. As far as i'm aware this was his first larger budget film, even though the budget was still pretty small. This was the film that introduced us to some really excellent characters that you really can't help but love. I'll start with Jeff Anderson's character Randal, I love the guy. Anderson plays the character to perfection and even gives the impression that he has that side to him in real life. This character never fails to make me laugh. And partnered with Brian O'Halloran's character Dante, they make a brilliant duo. O'Halloran gives an excellent performance as the clerk who believes he's made for bigger things, he just doesn't know what they are. Then there is Jay and Silent Bob, who I believe the whole world know. Two excellent characters that only a genius mind like Kevin Smith's could come up with. So simple, yet so brilliant. Jason Mewes is fantastic and i don't think any other could play Jay the way he does. The character was made for him, it really is him, i'm sure. Smith giving a very understated performance but brilliant all the same. Overall a brilliant film that for sure, should not be missed. One of my favorites. Could watch it a thousand times and never get bored with it.

Clerks II (2006,  R)
Clerks II
I usually find it hard to believe that a sequel can be just as good as the first one, but in this case, it's true. I wouldn't go as far to say it was better but it definatly stands strong against the original. I think this one is a lot funnier in many ways than the first one and the plot is just as strong. The characters that I really love are back again with whole new problems in their lives. Dante is engaged but has issues with his boss at Moobies. Randal is as funny as he always is. My favorite scene in the whole film being when he argues with the customer about whether Star Wars or Lord of the Rings is better. Kevin Smith manages to throw some really great jokes in that sequence. And the lovable Jay and Silent Bob are back and just as funny as they always are. Another masterpiece from the master that is Kevin Smith. I've yet to find a film of his I didn't really enjoy. This is another film I find hard not to add to my favorites list, so i'm not going to try, I really can't find any reasons why I can't add it to the list. Highly recommended film. A must see for everyone.

The Boondock Saints (1999,  R)
The Boondock Saints
Fucking hell what an awesome movie. It is far from perfect in terms of direction and its slight Tarentino esk wannabe style but once you get passed that it really does kick ass. The plot is strong and exciting throughout and doesn't have one lacking moment in the whole film. Some people have mentioned they don't like that the film tries to open a debate about evil people being killed in this way but only gives you reasons why it isn't a wrong thing to do. I don't really think this is the case because throughout the film they show members of the public agreeing or disagreeing with the killings and then again at the end. You also have the personal troubles Willem Dafoe's character has about letting the Saint's carry on. Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery both gave really excellent performances. Billy Connolly's character was really great to see as well. Nice addition to the cast. The only problem I have with this film is the Irish accents occasionally wandered, but once you get past that it isn't a big deal. A real kick ass movie that I highly recommend.

Almost Famous (2000,  R)
Almost Famous
When I started watching this a few nights ago I was under the impression that i'd never seen it before. Turned out I had, probably back when it was first released. I remembered just how much I loved it back then, and now I know why. The whole film is just excellent. The performances all brilliant. I love Patrick Fugit, and I feel he really was a perfect choice for the character. Even after this film he's managed to stay under the radar, only being in a few indie films since this came out. He's a terrific actor and one to watch in the future. I've never really watched a whole lot of Kate Hudson's films and the ones I have seen have been stupid that don't show her off to what she is capable of. This film however, shows her in her true light. She is a very capable actress and hopefully we'll be able to see her in more roles like this one. I liked Jason Lee as one of the rock stars as well. He played the part very well and lit up the screen with some really brilliant acting. The plot is excellent and probably every music kid's dream (I.e. Me). Who wouldn't want to write for Rolling Stone at the age of 15 and tour with a band. If your into music then this film is for you. If your into fun films then this film is for you. I highly recommend this film.

Hard Candy (2006,  R)
Hard Candy
This film just blew me away. I had heard it was very good with powerhouse performances from both Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson but I really was amazed and surprised by it.
The plot is very mysterious as it starts off with two people chatting online. They agree to meet at a coffee shop and it is there that you discover that these two people consist of a 14 year old girl and a 30 something man. His motives are made immediately clear as he manipulates the girl into coming back to his house.
It's hard to write about this film without giving to much away, as it's the little surprises in this film that really make it.
Ellen Page's character is at first, made to appear grown up for her age, very intelligent and very confident. After he impresses her with his house and photography studio and allows her to drink, the director uses a stark change in styles to show the change in power between the two characters. Page goes from the one who is being taken advantage of with Wilson manipulating situations to make her feel more at ease and in control. The camera movement becomes very rapid as the drugs begin to take hold of him, the colour and picture becomes distorted as Page now becomes the one in control and Wilson turns into the 'victim'. It's hard to imagine that this is director David Slade's first film as he does such a brilliant job.
The film takes a dark turn and your loyalty to the characters is challenged. At first you feel very strongly in favour of Page's character but once she begins to carry out her obviously carefully organised plans. Initially no clue is given as to why she is doing this so you can't help but question her.
At certain points in the film there are times when you even feel but for Wilson's character. His performance is unbelievably convincing as the level of distress he portrays is amazing. You can't help but feel bad for what he is going through even though you know was he is capable of. There are even points in the film when you question his guilt, as you cannot be 100% sure that he did what Page continues to accuse him of.
The ending to the film is just perfect and i'm not going to say any more than that so as not to spoil it.
It's also very hard to say which actor did a better job because as much as I would prefer to say Ellen Page, they were both just so excellent it is hard to say which.
A terrific film that you should definatly check out if you've not already. It is very much worth it and is just another reason why you have to love Ellen Page.

Yes, i'm finally getting round to reviewing this film after seeing it for the first time about a month ago. Since that first viewing i've seen it three times in the cinema. The feeling i got when it started the first time round was one that I don't get many times a year but when it does happen you know it's because your watching something special. And this film really will be one that people will be talking about in centuries to come. I don't know quite where to start when writing about this film. I would probably find it incredibly hard to find anything wrong with it at all, and even if there is a minor problem with it, all the greatness covers it up completely.
From Batman Begins, it was made quite clear that Christian Bale was born to play Batman. I'm sure lots of actors could claim to be up to the task but i'm pretty certain that that wouldn't be the case. Bale as Batman, from the word go is iconic. Better than any before and although I can't say for certain, presumably better than any to follow. When it came to all the business with Heath Ledger's death, I couldn't help but feel bad for Bale as I knew it would be virtually impossible for him to have given a decent performance never a bad one. He's an actor that puts his heart and soul into everything he does and ever performance up until this point has just proved it right. His performance in the Dark Knight tops his Begins one. A lot stronger and a lot more kick ass. And because he was up against such amazing actors he really raised his game. I would love to say that he dominated the screen at every moment but sadly that can't really be the case when The Joker was on screen.
The first time Heath walks on screen all done up as The Joker it really is breath taking. I love that Nolan decided to understate the Joker's entrance, is was very subtle but very powerful. The tragic circumstances of Ledger's death meant that a whole lot extra publicity was brought to the film and Heath's performance. I couldn't help but feel slightly apprhensive about his performance as it would be a huge tragedy if it wasn't as great as some people made out simply because of his death. The huge relief I felt when it turned out to be one of the most powerful performances i've seen in a long time. Who knew that Ledger had all of that inside him. Yes, his performances in previous films had been very good but this was just beyond good. It was ground breaking. It also makes his death a whole lot more awful because of all those future performances the world is going to miss out on. The rumours surrounding Heath in terms of an Oscar nomination for this performance are completely justified and I have to say that if he doesn't win Best Actor I will have a fair few strong words for the board. They would have to be utterly blind not to see that Heath's performance is miles better than a lot of people who have previously won the award. But lets just hope for once they will see sense and give the award to the person who really deserves it.
I have to mention Maggie Gyllenhaal as well. I don't think the producers could have made a better decision than to replace Katie Holmes because she was the let down of Begins. The only weak link in the chain. Gyllenhaal is as amazing as you could hope for and more. She stands strong against Ledger and Bale which cannot have been easy considering the dominate the screen constantly. I was really upset at her final demise and only feel it will be a loss to the third film no matter how impressively executed the plot for her death was.
The stunts are as fast paced as you could ever hope for, the cinematography is brilliant, the direction is as excellent as you could expect from Chris Nolan and although he is yet to make a film that disappoints, this is probably the film that will be marked as his best and the one that made people sit up and take notice of him.
Finally, this film really is a masterpiece, but I guess you don't really need me to tell you that. It is all quite clearly obvious in all the five star reviews this film has. If you've not seen it alreay then I suggest you do yourself a huge favour and do it now.

Another reason why Danny Boyle is possibly my favourite director of all time. There is not a film genre out there that this man cannot harness and create some kind of masterpiece out of. Boy did this movie deserve all the Oscars it won.
The plot is just so simple and yet so magical. What really makes the story so captivating is definatly the way Boyle decided to structure the film. It's not just a lateral time line like I was expecting but with each new question you are transported back in time to Jamal's childhood and shown each of the struggles he and his brother faced. It's not the easiest way to tell a story because directors can sometimes over complicate things, luckily Boyle doesn't fall into this trap at all and the whole film is very clear.
This is the film that has also highlighted some really great talent from some young actors that are sure to go on and do great things with their new found talent. The first time I saw Dev Patel was in the British teenage drama Skins a few years ago and although it was clear he had a lot of talent I don't think many anticipated the talent that he has shown in this. His performance is excellent throughout the film and he has also proven himself to be a very professional actor who can make the jump from relatively small television drama to big time movie star.
Other than this film, Freida Pinto's work is unknown to me. I have no idea if this was the first film she has ever made or not but I'm certain that from now on she's going to be headed for big things. She has this grace about her that makes her perfect for the character.
The chemistry between the two young actors is also quite clear throughout the film even with minimal scenes together. They're just so convincing, it's heartbreaking when things don't seem to be going the way they want.
The score for the film sets the whole thing off very nicely and enhances each piece of the movie without over powering the scenes which is exactly what a good score should do.
Another thing that really struck me about the film as a whole was how polished and yet raw the whole thing was. The cinematography is beautiful and has this edge to it. There are also not many films that I want to sit through the credits to. The dance sequence at the end was completely irrelevant, not needed in the slightest and yet, it just added to the charm of it all. Boyle just seems to be able to find this balance in everything he does that takes what could have been a very average movie into a beautiful and touching film.
I don't think I need to mention how much you need to see this film because let's face it, if you've not heard the hype surrounding it, it's because you fell off the planet.

Wow, this film just blew me away. I knew I wanted to see it when I heard about the cast but after not hearing much about it for a while I put the viewing off for a while. Kinda wish I hadn't.
I don't know what went wrong with the marketing on this film but it really is such a shame. I do hope this film won't fall under the radar and continue to be ignored by many people who would really enjoy it.
It's a quirky comedy set in the late 80s about a college graduate who is forced to start working at a local amusement park over the summer when he can't find work doing anything else. The hours are long, the job is boring and the pay is rubbish but he while working there, he discovers things about himself and some very valuable life lessons.
Jesse Eisenberg was completely unknown to me before I watched this film. I don't recall seeing him in anything else until now and if I have he didn't catch my attention in any way. But with this I found him rather impressive. His character is very down to earth and one of those nice guys you know you could be friends with because there is just nothing to dislike about him.
Although Eisenberg impressed me, it was Kristen Stewart that won it for me. She's a terrific actress and everyone knows about her new found fame with the Twilight series, but for me it has always been her small films with interesting characters and solid performances that result in me being unable to say no to anything she happens to be in. She plays Eisenberg's new love interest at the park but she's seeing another guy secretly and she's also going through quite a lot of emotional stuff with her family. It's easy to say she's a bit of a mess and all of her problems don't exactly make it easy for Eisenberg to get to know her the way he wants to.
Ryan Raynolds seemed like an odd choice for the character. He seems very out of place in the film. There is nothing wrong with his performance, he does it very well, but I personally think another, less generic actor would have been a much better choice.
Bill Hader is so funny. He plays the owner of the park and every single one of his scenes are just hilarious. Perfect choice for the character and he has great chemistry with all the young actors involved.
It makes me sad that more people have not seen this as it is so good and totally worth your time. I hope it becomes one of those indie films that everyone has heard about because it would be a shame if it failed to get the recognition it deserved.
