Repo! The Genetic Opera - R

I didn't initially expect this to be a good movie. it was a musical, after all, therefore something I'm always skeptical about in advance. I was pleasantly surprised from the very beginning. the graphics hinted to something deeper and wider thus captivated me in an instant. the very fact of it being set in the not so far future turned out to be a + unlike in many other futuristic flicks. very impressive visuals in terms of original non-formal clothing, gimmicky but extraordinarily distinctive characters, fantastic music. Ogre is absolutely brilliant in his portrayal of Pavi Largo. he was the only reason why my final decision was to watch this movie after all and he didn't disappoint. completely transformed, genial, talented and inspired - he was a radically different person, with different manners and voice, with a singular character who is more than believable, actually, rather genuine. although quite episodic, his brightness in the audio/video impressionism was one of the best. Luigi is also one of my personal favorites, darkly funny, preposterously humorous and violent. Nathan is someone I felt for through the entire movie, to me he really was the main character, I suffered his pains, I cried his tears, took part in his endeavors. Shilo was possibly the only character which seemed boring and useless, although she indeed did something very important throughout the movie, she uncovered the real reason behind the entire tragedy - Marni. Paris Hilton is fabulous in her 'play' and the 'role' suited her better than anything else she'd tried before. Sarah Brightman, aside from being a fantastic singer and a very attractive woman is also a very fragile heroin, a perfect actress, a martyr of consequences, a victim of her best friend's wrong choices. Rotti, a betrayed, disappointed savior, ready to give up anything and everything for the sake of revenge has a magical voice and entirely wrong, mistaken, evil, manipulative personality. finally, the Graverobber. possibly one of the most charming and attractive characters in this story. witty, also quite manipulative, far too wise and sane for his age is like an antonym to himself. devilishly seductive, holding and offering little glass vials which destroy lives of the weak. for being a side-role he sure did better than most of the lead-roles. as for the plot... it's ridiculous at times but that's what makes it so tempting for re-watching. 'opera' is a really relative notion and this picture was more of a really modern and industrial/gothic take on music in 'opera' terms. topics of self-blame, father/daughter relationships, human behaviors in absolutely inhuman situations. it's all there, all simple, all difficult, all real. amazing amount of effort and work is clearly visible. utterly emotional, bitterly precise and vivid, absolutely honest at times - this movie is a must see.
