The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
I had no idea I did not write anything about this film. But is there really anything new I can say about it? Probably not.

I truly love this film, and it is one of the rare films (along with Stand By Me) where it improves upon the source material. Like Stand By Me this was based on a novella in Different Seasons. The novella is brilliant but the film actually improves upon it, like the way Stand By Me does.

I do believe this film has earnt its place as being widely regarded as one of the best films.

Lost Highway (1997,  R)
Lost Highway
Such a difficult film to write about, David Lynch truly is my legend! The man can craft, he can fuck you up, and Lost Highway fucks you up. So many things in this film to talk about and really so little time. Certainly not a film for Lynch virgins, watch it if you dare.
12
Inland Empire (2006,  R)
Inland Empire
Lynch has done it again! Another warped film, that is utterly amazing. This is really difficult to actually review. There is just so much here, and the way it is done, just done so well. Much like Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr. this has the same kind of thing, characters, becoming different people. You know the drill. David Lynch has done this in such a way that you can decide for yourself what is going on, the clues are there. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. I was amazed, this is a three hour film, not once did it drag, it actually felt like a 90min film and I wanted so much more. Laura Dern is this movie, she simply puts on a career best performance. I know this film will be hated, it is not for those who want things handed to them gift wrapped. This is a film that makes you think, like trying to solve a mystery. That is the beauty of Lynch's work, he makes you think, he forces you to use your head, to think, to find answers. Quite simply, I love you David Lynch!

Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me (,  R)
Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me
This is a great movie, either you watch this after the series, or you just watch it and don't watch the series. This is Laura Palmer's movie, her last days of her seemingly sad, sad life. I don't know why this is so hated, it's typical Lynch. And I don't understand why people found this hard to follow, I found it extremely easy to follow and was not confused over anything. I supposed people expected this to be like the TV show, but no this is much darker, and I think it has to be. I think a sure sign that this wont be the TV show is the opening scene of a TV getting smashed. The first half hour follows the case of Teresa Banks (Who was mentioned in the TV series, the murder the same as Laura's) and we see how Agent Cooper gets involved and then what leads him to Laura's case. It sort of felt forced to have him there, but you also appreciate it as well. It is too bad the disappearance of Chris Isaak's Agent Desmond just happens and we don't have a resolution. I am not sure if it was in the additional 5 hours of footage or if Lynch was going to explore this in another film which he planned to do, but the plans got scrapped (grrr). Once we get to Twin Peaks, the sad story of Laura Palmer unfolds and there are some really powerful and disturbing scenes. Sheryl Lee was perfect as Laura Palmer, she carries the film so well. I was a little annoyed by Moira Kelly as Donna, her character just seemed off. I don't know if it was because of her, or what. Would have been nice if Lara Flynn Boyle reprised the role (Apparently it was due to schedule conflicts and not the nudity). Another great film by David Lynch, I really just adore the man.

Watchmen
I still haven't managed to get a proper review together, I really want to see it again before I write one. I am though really unimpressed with some of the sh*t this film has been getting. Saying maybe it was too faithful...and I bet those idiots were the same ones yelling for it to be extremely faithful to the source material. Le sigh...

Down by Law (1986,  R)
Down by Law
What a fantastic film! I just love this, so many fantastic moments! Superb performances by John Lurie as Jack, Tom Waits as Zach and Roberto Benigni as Roberto 'Bob'. The three men find themselves sharing a jail cell. Then one day they escape and find themselves lost not knowing what do to. I find Jarmusch a very interesting film maker, and for me he crafted a very interesting and fun film. The scenes in the jail cell are probably the best in the film, especially the 'I Scream' part, just classic! I would have a hard time actually recommending this to anyone, if you are a Jarmusch fan then definitely give this a try, as well as if you are a fan of any of the three leads. Little piece of trivia, this is Roberto Benigni's first english film, and keep an eye out for his wife Nicoletta Braschi who is quite adorable in the film. One thing I really thought worked so well with the film is the fact it is in B&W, it gives the film a kind of timeless quality, which I love.

Zodiac (2007,  R)
Zodiac
I've been hanging to see this for so long I really expected that I was going to be let down, but nope! I thought this was excellent, just everything about it, I loved. For me this didn't drag at all and it certainly didn't feel like it was almost 3 hours long. Having read up about the Zodiac case many times, I was interested to see a film about it. Going with the people who were involved with it, and became obsessed with it, having it taking over their lives, it was just so intense to watch. It didn't really stray away from the Zodiac either, which I really liked (A problem that I had with The Black Dahlia, the characters just weren't that interesting, and the case was) and in this they kept up with the case. You could see how it affected the characters, and what toll it took on them, without going too much into it. Performance wise everyone was just spot on, and its always great to see Elias Koteas on screen. Anthony Edwards who usually annoys me, didn't in this, I actually thought he was good. Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr were excellent, probably the stand outs. Jake was good too, the only issue, so many years past and he hadn't really aged. I'd highly recommend this to fans of the genre, you wont be disappointed.

La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (The Legend of 1900) (1998,  R)
La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (The Legend of 1900)
Caught this on TV last night by surprise, went to go to sleep and this was starting. I just adore and love this film so much, it just felt even better seeing it again (It really needs to be in my collection.). It has a strange story, about a man (Tim Roth) who was raised on a ship and who never leaves the ship and his a musical genius on the piano. The story is told from the point of view of a man he met on the ship, Max (Pruitt Taylor Vince) who starts to tell the story when he hears a record of music that shouldn't exist (You have to watch the film to find out about that.). Firstly, while the story is a little strange, it just seems to work so well. Tim Roth is just simply amazing as 1900, the casting for that role, perfection. One of the best films Tim Roth has done, and its no wonder he's on my list of my fav actors. For my anyway I just couldn't help but fall in love with 1900, everything about the character, just loved it. Another genius casting choice was Pruitt Taylor Vince as Max, I thought he was just excellent. Those two had great chemistry together and it worked so well. One of the best scenes is when their characters meet, simply fantastic. Again if you can't tell, I really do love this film.

I saw this after I saw the remake, and I was just so stunned at how amazing this film truly is. Ahead of its time, thats for sure. The perfomrances are simply stunning, and Angela, whoa! She has to be seen to be believed in this! (I think her character is def an inspiration for Angela Petrelli on Heroes)

One of my favourite action movies, I can watch this all the time! I first watched this when it like first came out, and its always been a guilty pleasure, for me it has a great re-watchable appeal about it. Probably one of the better movies Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze have been in, they pretty much rock in this. Gotta love the bank robbery scenes and the sky diving scenes. Showgirls
So bad it is a masterpiece! So this is quite possibly one of the worst movies of all time, but it happens to be one of the most entertaining and hilarious movies of all time. The story of Nomi is well pretty funny, all she seems to do is eat chips, talk about nails, crack tantrums, crack alot of tantrums, dance is the most unsexy way, have really hilarious sex, and the list goes on. Elisabeth Berkley took herself too seriously in this movie, so damn funny. Gina Gershon on the other hand has fun with her role, she knows the movie is a joke and she has fun with it. Smart woman, and shes pretty hot in this too. The script is hilarious, the women in this are like from another planet, there are some vulgar things said, and everything is just sooooooo unrealistic, and the thing is they were aiming for it to be. Funniest thing about the DVD is the commentary, and its funny with the video commentary by strippers how they mock Berkleys dancing hehe.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I thought this was excellent, I thought they did a really good job adapting the huge book. Sure things got changed, but that is to be expected. I thought the main trio were all excellent, they have really grown so much as performers and are so comfortable in their roles. Imela Staunton was perfect as Umbridge, I really just wanted to strangle her lol! The stand out was Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (My fav HP character) he was simply amazing, and so heart breaking.

The Fountain
I don't even know what to say about this, I thought it was excellent. Visually, it was so beautiful, it was just such a delight to look at. It really was! The story itself was beautiful but in such a sad sad way. I thought Hugh Jackman was amazing, a really tough role and he pulled it off so well. Rachel Weisz rarely is a disappointment, and she was perfect. The themes about life and death I thought were handled in such a way, that I just found it all really moving, and it reminds you of your own mortality, and it does make you think. I really did not know what to think going in to this, I really was quite moved by this. It wont be easy to watch again, but I certainly want to.

Dancing At The Blue Iguana (2000,  R)
Dancing At The Blue Iguana
The improv strip club movie, with Daryl Hannah, Jennifer Tilly and Sandra Oh. I first saw this on Foxtel, and I really liked it but at that time I had no idea it was a film that the actors improvised. Watching it again knowing that, I didn't really think you could tell, it actually rolls together really well, the characters they created are all a little messed up and quite sad. You can see the sadness in their eyes, props to the ladies for some really good performances. Especially Sandra Oh, I thought she was really good here, and you could tell she put alot of effort into her character. Her strip/dance to Porcelian is really quite sad and she puts it across so well. Daryl Hannahs character is so clueless, but she does it in such a way, she's cute. She also put alot into her character, it shows. Jennifer Tilly who I always enjoy is a crazy bitch, and she does it well. There are some really funny and weird scenes, like the pregnancy test part. When I'm ready I'll have to watch Daryl Hannahs doco, which is included on the DVD (The R4 release I believe doesn't have any extras and you have to buy the doco on its own).

Eastern Promises (2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
I finally got around to seeing this, and I really did love it, I do have to see it again though. This was quite an interesting film for Cronenberg, the whole Russian mob thing and all. Viggo was just simply amazing, and how he got through that infamous fight scene is beyond me! Naomi for me is never a let down, she was really good, *SPOILER* although that kiss at the end was forced. I didn't feel that their characters should have done that. *END SPOILER* Vincent Cassel, what a guy, perfectly cast as Kirill, such a good actor. The relationships that were formed in the film were interesting, and the revelations were as well, some I saw coming and some I didn't at all! Which is something I really like, I don't like seeing things coming a mile away and some things were quite the surprise. Cronenberg has crafted quite the film, another impressive film to add to his list! And of course another reason why he is one of my all time favourite film makers!

3:10 to Yuma (2007,  R)
3:10 to Yuma
What a movie! I loved this! I expected to like it, but not totally fall in with it! Everything about this was great, I loved the story (Yes I know it was a remake), and I liked the way our two leads developed over the course of the film. Russell Crowe is amazing in his as Ben Wade, truely this has to be his best role (And coming off a strong performance in American Gangster), the man was gold! Speaking of gold, Christian Bale, the man can do no wrong, he's always excellent! This role was suited to him so well, and the chemistry between Bale and Crowe was spot on perfection. It would not have worked with other actors. Of course Ben Foster is a stand out, he's fantastic. Even in the worst of films he's great, and he made a supporting character quite the interesting one. Again if anyone else was in the role I don't think it would have worked. There are some great appearances in this too, I also really liked Alan Tudyk as the doctor and Logan Lerman as the son. The cinematogray is unreal, that is the only way I can describe it. It looked amazing and the score was just excellent, perfectly fitting. This movie is going on my list of favourites, it is fantastic.

Heathers (1988,  R)
Heathers
The ultimate teen high school black comedy! Who didn't love this movie growing up? This totally go me through my youth and watching it again was just truly awesome. The script is great, so clever and funny and for back then very daring. I'm not even sure they'd dare do this today honestly! Winona Ryder plays her part well, and Shannen Doherty was perfectly cast as the bitch, not much work she had to do. Kim Walker is also really good, her bitch is great. The real stand out is Christian Slater as Jason Dean, he's all kinds of awesomeness. Back in the day Christian Slater was quite the actor, this and Pump Up The Volume probably his two best roles. Always a fun movie to watch, glad I own it now!

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007,  R)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Firstly I don't think I really need to go into what this about, the title basically tells you that. Firstly I have to say this is an amazingly gorgeous film to watch, the cinematograhpy is fantastic. Certain shots are just so beautiful and so well done, they just stick with you. The score is stunning as well, perfectly fitting for the film. The film starts off giving us a little into on the subject of Jesse James, and we meet him before a robbery, as does a young man who idolises him Robert Ford. It goes on from there, showing us sides to the characters involved and what leads the eventual assassination. Brad Pitt does a fantastic job as Jesse James, showing all his highs and lows. Casey Affleck yet again shines, the man is amazing. His portrayal of Robert Ford was true and real, I am glad he was the one cast for this role. Also giving a very strong performance was Sam Rockwell as Charlie Ford, especially towards the second half of the film. I know the running time might put people off, but I didn't even notice, it certainly didn't feel long, and I think that just goes to show what a great movie it is. This is a character driven piece, it is not a shoot 'em up action packed piece, and it works so well. The script is great, and well crafted. Recommended if you are a Western fan, like your character driven films, like your Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999,  PG-13)
10 Things I Hate About You
I just love this movie, I have ever since I saw it at the cinema back in the day. It was such a pleasure to watch it again. Heath Ledger was such a great revelation here, you could see the makings of a great actor here. Julia Stiles is great too, I thought they had some great chemistry together. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and David Krumholtz are just great together as well. Andrew Keegan's acting leaves a lot to be desired but he does play the dickhead character well, you really do just want to smack him all through the film. Based on The Taming Of The Shrew, it was a cute and fun update, certainly one of the better teen films to come out of the 90's. I mean you know where it is headed, but that is typical of the genre, it is getting there that is all the fun.

The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
I can't even begin to state just how simply amazing this film is. Truly the film of 2008, everything about this was just awesome and amazing.

(yay review)

After what, like 3 years of waiting, last night I finally saw The Dark Knight, thank whoever got this film to Australia a day early! Brilliant! Oh and thanks to Super Dan for providing some good company for the film hehe

Anyway! This lived up to all my expectations and more, it was soo much better then I ever had expected! This film was bloody epic! It was the real world comic book film, Batman was given the treatment he truly deserves.Could the casting have been any better? Bale is Batman/Wayne, so perfect, he really is! Michael Caine as Alfred rules, their chemistry together is utterly excellent. I'm glad they recast Katie Holmes, I can't stand her. Maggie is a strong actress and she held her own, I'm glad they chose her. Gary Oldman really put on a good show as Gordon, we got more of him here and Gary Oldman is never a let down (Even in the shittiest film, he can come up smelling like roses). I must say in a small role I loved Nestor Carbonell as the Mayor, but perhaps I am biased because some day he will father my children!

The real stand-outs though would be Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent and the late Heath Ledger as the Joker. Their characters were done so bloody well, so much to them! There is no way any other actors could have done what they did. Dent's transformation is truly tragic and heart breaking, Eckhart just managed to do all the right things to send that across. And Ledger, whoa...when I first heard of his casting, I thought, no way can he be the Joker. But he really became something else, a true villain. That Joker that be made and became is something I've never seen before, he played everything so perfectly, everything was spot on. His last complete performance by far for me was truly his best. Heath was a great actor, and here he out did himself.

The story is so dark too, the events that happen, are dark! It is a dark film, it is a crime film! I have to say I quite enjoyed Eric Roberts too, as part of the mob. See Batman has made a difference in Gotham, and basically it's time to get back at him. There are those who want to save the city (Batman, Dent, Gordon) and then theres the one who wants to see it burn (the Joker). Everything was done in such a way, the scope of it all, epic is really the only word I can use to describe it. I probably can't really add much more to what has already been said about this film. But I must point out there are certain scenes which are beyond fantastic, such as the opening! I loved it! Watch out for the Jokers magic trick, I jumped out of my seat when I saw it!

Of course this film does have its lighter moments, and some rather funny scenes too. Expertly written!

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
*Ahem* I actually had never seen this movie before, and I don't really know why. I wish I had seen it earlier, because I was missing out, big time. This was just great, from start to finish, ah it was just so much fun to watch. It didn't drag at all, totally held my attention all the way, the situations just got from bad to worse, such a ride, really. The ending had me in stitches, I was almost screaming. And Jason Statham, damn, the things I would do to him, well I should keep that to myself hehe.

Finally got around to seeing this, pretty fun movie, I really liked it alot. Not as good as Lock Stock, although Brad Pitts character, fuck he was funny. Jason Flemyng looked like a red haired Johnny Spiteri, so funny. And of course Jason Statham who continues to be a huge turn on *sigh*

JCVD (Van Dammage)
This film was awesome! Such a brave and bold move for Van Damme! Well done man! He put on a very brave performance and showed he can actually act! I love a lot of his films, and some yes are utter crap (Street Fighter) but he can be a good actor and he can put on a good show, and he has done that here. I will definitely be watching this again, go JCVD!

No Retreat, No Surrender
Man this movie is freakin awesome! I mean yes the acting is non-existent, but who cares?? Its all apart of what makes it so awesome! They don't make them like this anymore, thats for sure. Oh and Van Damme is barely in this, but when he is, he rules! The characters are so hilarious in this, the bully, the best friend, OMG its classic stuff!
