District 9 - R One of the best films I've seen in recent years, and a great, great science fiction film. What I love most about it is the originality of it - something I thought was lost in this genre of cinema. Of course it's comparable to other films, there are elements of it that are shared with many, but this puts a completely different spin on the usual alien picture.

I loved the allegory, the obvious commentary on racial and class divides in the world. I loved that although there was a lot of digital art and animation in it - it was not relied upon. They used it basically to insert more realism into the into the picture, to make the 'prawns' seem as if they really could exist on our planet, and to demonstrate, towards the end, the powerful devastation that could have ensued had they really come to Earth with malicious intentions via their obviously superior weaponry.

Sharlto Copley's character was REAL, and I think that's what I loved best. He was obviously prejudiced, but good natured and wanting only to move up in the world and impress his father in law. When he became tainted with the 'fluid', his inner struggle between his own survival and doing the right thing by his newfound friend is all relate-able.

I appreciated the ending especially, as it left you thinking, wondering, and able to come to your own conclusions, especially when I, personally, was so torn between what I wanted to happen not only to MNU but to the world itself.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Ice Age 3) - PG The weasel was the only real thing that made this one tolerable. Leave it to Simon Pegg, even in animated form. The girls loved this film though, and the baby Mammoth was pretty damn cute. August 20, 2009

The Hangover - R LOVED this film. I heard so many great things about it before that I went in very cynical, expecting to be disappointed as I usually am, but I wasn't. I thought the story was clever, the character acting was superb and overall it was just a great experience. I've never been to Vegas, never interested in going before either, but now I want to go pop a roofie and see what I can get myself and my friends into. August 20, 2009

Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo) (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) - G Miyazaki has done it yet again. Absolutely beautiful film, wonderful story and his way of portraying little girls as strong, capable figures is inspiring and makes me proud to show his films to my own daughters. August 20, 2009

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG I'm a fan of the books, and one of those insufferable snobs about how inaccurate the films are. I tried my best to separate my feelings about the book (This one is my favorite in the series) from the film. Overall, I enjoyed it, all though the last 40 minutes of it were extremely frustrating. They didn't give the battle of Hogwarts or Dumbledore's final moments the spectacle they deserved. But it was pretty good and I'll be seeing the next two films - glad they're splitting it into two. The Ugly Truth - R I wonder when Katherine Heigl will stop playing these roles that are basically just insane caricatures of every stereotype about women in existence. The smart and successful but completely stupid and clueless thing is so played out.

I personally saw the film for Gerard Butler. As much as I love that dear man, he needs a coach to help him with his god awful American accent. I liked the film alright and it made me laugh, but I could have waited for it to come on HBO.
