| E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial - PG |
Yes, I wanted to like the movie; esp. since it's been ages since I saw it. But, maybe since it's outdated, maybe because the characters didn't make any sense to me; maybe the premise itself seemed ridiculous to movie, it just didn't match up to the legendary status it has reserved for itself in the annals of movie history. Just ok in my book - I didn't get the character definitions, and the over the board yelling and screaming of the kids didn't help either. Wish I was entertained more. Must have been path breaking special effects in their time. |

| Ocean's 11 (Ocean's Eleven) - PG-13 | This may've been a cool flick at its time; but things have changed so dramatically since the movie was released that right now it's best not watched. Sinatra is coolness personified and these guys would be considered politically incorrect today; given the stuff they did both on and off camera those days. Skip it and watch the Clooney flicks. Way better... | September 9, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Modern Times - Unrated | The last of Chaplin's silent films; this film definitely deserves its place in the hall of fame. The film throbs with empathy for humanity in much the same way as "The Great Dictator" did and is a searing, sensitive and thought provoking portrayal of the days of our lives (couldn't resist that) in a way that Borat was able to achieve more recently. Brilliant background score (chaplin), direction (chaplin), acting (chaplin), script (chaplin), production (chaplin), where do we stop... Chaplin is unequivocally IMO the greatest artist to have graced the silver screen. | September 6, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Who Framed Roger Rabbit - PG | Watching this movie again, reminded me of ol' times when animation in a live action movie seemed a novelty. Even today, the film actually holds well against the onslaught of spl. effects films and little did I realize that the movie was directed by none other than Robert Zemeckis! | September 5, 2007 | N/A | |||
| La Notte - Unrated | The beauty of an Antonioni film is that every scene of his is so rife w/ speculation that every one of us viewing it can infer whatever our psychological upbringing permits us to. La Notte is a part of his trilogy, definitely the weakest among them, but surely worth a viewing for it's lead actors. Jeanne Moreau definitely steals the show w/ one spectacular performance, even overshadowing Mastrioni (Fellini's favorite actor) and Monica Vitti (Antonioni's fav actor). Although, I've gotta say, Monica Vitti is definitely one of the most beautiful actresses of ALL TIME! Skip this movie if you're not an Antonioni fan. | September 3, 2007 | N/A | |||
| L'Eclisse - Unrated |
SPECTACULAR! I'd urge every cinephile to watch this movie - please! Ground breaking, truly "paradigm shifting" in the way the movie is constructed, frame by frame, truly phenomenal ending (better than l'avventura) and what is ironically the MOST romantic movie I've ever seen, Monica Vitti is a goddess on screen, brilliant shifts in tonality, amazing transitions from scene to scene, I could go on... If you love films, this is a MUST SEE. Antonioni is definitely one of my favorite directors (right next to Kurosawa and Terrence Malick). |

| The Thin Red Line - R | Watching it again, it reminded me how Terrence Mallick is the only other director (besides Kurosawa) who can film violence as visual poetry. Many scenes in this movie are reminiscent of Kurosawa's directorial technique as well as a shared philosophical insight into the nature of humanity (our search for truth) juxtaposed with the contradiction called war. If "Apocalypse Now" is the most over-rated war movie EVER, The Thin Red Line will take the award for most underrated. In my book, this is the pinnacle of poetic film making. | August 26, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Superbad - R | If you thought Knocked Up was good, then SuperBad will knock your socks off! It's kind a like American Pie w/ more heart and soul. A movie filled w/ scenes that could be straight out of your high school life just packed with more R-rated jokes, cussing and sexual innuendo than some can handle. But if you belong to my demographic you'll be committing a crime by not watching this movie. This is a movie that'll go down as a comedy classic and there's no denying that. Superbad IS SUPERBAD! | August 21, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Jerry Maguire - R | Still a classic after all those viewings. Definitely ridden w/ cliches, melodramatic, improbable situations but guess what -- it's still wildly entertaining! Loved it, and I realize I should probably buy the DVD. | August 19, 2007 | N/A | |||
| L'Avventura (The Adventure) - Unrated | I'd have definitely given this film a 5/5 if only I'd understood it without a commentary to explain the cinematic grammar embedded in the film's narrative. Once you get that, the film opens up its artistic qualities the to immeasurable satisfaction of movie lovers. As a self-proclaimed Kurosawa movie fanatic, I've got to say that Antonioni's style is equally brilliant though one that requires serious study unlike Kurosawa who makes his films easily palatable to audiences of any level of cinema knowledge and for that reason alone, Kurosawa towers over every other film maker. If you're watching this, I'd recommend the Criterion collection w/ expert commentary to help explain the sequences and their inner metaphors. Also, the ending is probably the BEST ending in the history of modern cinema - understated, subtle and pregnant w/ powerful imagery. Watch it. | August 18, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Blowup (Blow-Up) (Blow Up) - Unrated | Barring a few spectacular sequences (all of them featuring photogs filming models and playing with them), the movie is a slow plodding abstract movie about the times in London during the 60s and a murder which may or may not have happened! Yes! My next movie is Antonioni's L'Avventura which I hope will be better than this one. | August 12, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Shooter - R | A wannabe Bourne! And a wannabe Bourne Identity, and of course Markie Mark is the wannabe Matt Damon. Give it a miss (even on DVD) and catch the Bourne Ultimatum in theaters right now. As for Shooter, it makes a terrible book-to-movie, movie w/ implausible scenes that may have passed muster in a book. Not worth it. | August 3, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Black Snake Moan - R | A notch below his directorial debut, Hustle and Flow, Craig Brewer however manages to maintain his position as one of the rare directors in Hollywood. Beacons of originality in a sea of remakes and sequels. The movie follows the format of Kurosawa's "Red Beard", w/ a theme of redemption between two characters. Superb acting, great direction, a bit shallow in parts, however a decent sophomore effort. Let's see if he can hit the next one out of the park. | August 2, 2007 | N/A | |||
| I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - PG-13 | Definitely worth watching. Sandler has become a master at juggling themes that satisfy his core audience yet paving the way for more mainstream audiences to digest. This one is more for his core audience though. Funny throughout, usual gross out jokes, his team of actor buddies - Rob Schneider, etc... and some terrific comedic support from Kevin James, Ving Rhames, Bill Aykroyd, Steve Buscemi and it's got Jessica Biel - that's another reason for the guys to watch. Entertaining. | July 29, 2007 | N/A | |||
| East of Eden - PG | "James Dean is the Jim Morrison of Movies". Definitely a classic! I can understand why Kazan didn't pick Brando for this role. Dean suits this character perfectly, although he sounded exactly like Brando and epitomized the animal instincts/body language that Brando was known for. Maybe going to the same Actor's Studio may've had its impact on the both of them. The movie is perfectly directed with amazing cinematography (just the swing scene alone would suffice) and the chemistry between the lead actors is palpable. The only actor of our generation who can replicate this intensity is Johnny Depp. Period. | July 29, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Die Hard 2 (Die Hard 2: Die Harder) - R | Although I started off the movie rather skeptical, by the time the movie ended, a wonderful time was had and you can't help but wonder why the fourth installment (in my opinion) was the weakest of em all. If Homer Simpson becomes an action hero, this is how he'll roll! Another American classic. | July 28, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - PG | Although I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, it somehow seemed the most ridiculous, outlandish, crazy plots of all the Indy flicks. However, the fact that it was based in India, a couple of Bollywood actors made the movie all the more funny. This is the closest that Indy Jones came to being a part of a musical - a Bollywood one at that too. | July 24, 2007 | N/A | |||
