I really, really liked it. Excellent screenplay, cinematography, acting, etc. Good story/idea - kudos to Fitzgerald's short story. Great lines delivered well on beautiful film.
**Update: watched three hour plus Director's Cut and it was bloody good but I did not like it quite as much as the theatrical version.

*Original Post Jackie Earle Haley & Malin Akerman !!!
I am NOT a Watchmen fanboy. I did NOT read the graphic novels or anything.
But this movie kicks ass. It is beautiful. 300 meets Superheros. Very well done I thought.
I really liked the subtle background humor and big 80's soundtrack
okay, I gave this 3-1/2 stars after seeing it in the theater but after further review and much contemplation and seeing the DVD, I am changing it to 4-1/2 stars because I do love it, not beacuse it is soooo amazing that you hae to see it.
Yes it it is cheesy but so are some of my favs. It is not the best piece of cinema but there are others that I have rated higher that are worse because I love them so much.
I read all of the books before watching this so I was way into it before the opening credits.
And I get all exited just like Pavlov's dog and the rest of the teen girls. They ring the bell and I drool.
Please, please do NOT see this unless you have read the books and are a fan!!!
I knew it would be corny, but I enjoyed it!
I stood in line with the girls and moms for three hours in the cold November night to see the 12:01 showing. I was expecting more of an experience with the 99.99% female audience, 96% of those college and high school.
A mom asked me what I thought the scream rating would be and I was hoping it would blow the roof off. But Twilight is not the modern day Beatles, I guess. The main part of that was the film itself.
It started with voice overs by Bella, quiet and subdued. It seemed to catch us all off guard. But sucked us in so fast. And most of the movie we seemed to sit there with our jaws on the floor or writhing with desire.
I did not really care for the adapted screenplay, being such a fan of the book. I also knew that there would never be an on-screen performance or image that matched the one in my mind. But I am fine with that.
I think the movie stands somewhat on it's own, where the books leave such a strong desire for more of the continuing story.
There is so much emotion and struggle within that it is impossible to translate that to the screen. I was really letdown by how fast the movie breezed through my favorite scenes in the book, especially the first day in the cafeteria, Biology class and the crash.
I did like the cast more than I expected. I thought their performances were fine with what they had to work with and the direction that they had. The humans were too perfect looking imo. So yes, there was a difference between them and the Cullens but I would like to see it more pronounced. But that is just me. The humans were very nicely dressed, whitened teeth, perfect hair, etc.
Stewart's throat is delicious, especially in the prom dress.
Update: Laughed more the second viewing, even though I laughed harder the first time. Good stuff. I'm glad they are working on another.
A fun time was had by all. Not as raunchy as I expected (grain of salt with that statement: p******* during cr**** excluded), but overall it was more than I expected and those moments were priceless for me.
Much LOL and clapping, slapping of knee, hooting, cheering, etc.
There where times I LOL so hard it hurt because they would not let up and I could not take a breath! Best comedy imo since Superbad.
Fantastic cast!!!! Great direction and script!! Soundtrack had me! Damn they played The Donnas "Take It Off" on the way to Vegas! Woot!! Thanks to Heather Graham as Jade! I'm so happy to see B.C. blowin up cause I've enjoyed watching him since Alias. I liked Mike Tyson too :) Had a blast.
Amazing!! For me this movie is very interesting because I can't judge a book (or a movie) by it's cover (or poster). I originally expected this to be weak, flimsy, cheap, shallow and smutty. Boy was I wrong!! I even saw a couple of short clips and photos and still misjudged it. But thankful my movie Best Friend, Alaine, said it was a "heart-warming romance."
"The story of a demanding boss and the woman who loves his demands."
Won Independent Spirit Award Best First Screenplay. Won Special Jury Prize for originality at Sundance.
Excellent acting, superb direction, great cinematography, good soundtrack, beautiful sets, nice costumes and makeup. Overall, very well done.
I am torn by the opening scene. Yes it showed me what is to come and makes the beginning even more dramatic because of the contrast. But I want to skip it because it is so amazing to see the growth, change and transformation take place on it's own without the stark contrast.
Maggie Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, SherryBaby) Nominated Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actress. She is excellent. Her character is so interesting and unexpected to me. I mistakenly assumed this movie would be more about Spader's character. I thought the character to be so simple and yet complex, rich in drama and tension while poor in spirit that brings out something very interesting. Some people complain in their reviews that we should have no compassion for a character like this. I disagree wholeheartedly.
I was really worried by James Spader's part and that it would make or break this movie for me. My movie friends wrote, "Spader does his usual sexy/creepy bit" and "Spader is his usual intense self." In retrospect this in not necessarily a bad thing as I thought it would be. Spader's acting is superb and I don't really recognize him as his usual self until the very end of the movie because he has so became the role of Mr. Grey. My hat is off to his performance. I am not really a Spader fan but he is aces in this.
The only thing that I did not like about this film was that it ended. I wanted more, another hour or two!
This movie should get 5 stars just on principle, but no seriously, I thought it was so lol funny. And I usually judge comedies on how much I laugh and how hard I laugh. Yeah so I am a pervert, this was really good. Not so much about sex, PER SE, but about the relationships, conversation and even just the body language. Almost like anti-porn because some of the scenarios are so real. Good cast, acting, directing, shots, lighting, script, soundtrack, etc. Watch through the credits, too for a little blurp at the end.
My favorite Gus Van Sant movies are now Milk, Good Will Hunting, and Elephant (which he also wrote).
I was impressed with Dustin Lance Black's screenplay and think that the story of Harvey Milk is very contemporary. But it was also cool to flash back to the streets of San Francisco during the 70's.
Very, very well acted by everyone. I could go on and on about each of them easily especially Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Alison Pill... gosh the list goes on and on and so could I, but I'll keep this short. I'm also going to refrain form all the awards talk.
Some real news footage mixed in to for good measure.
I really liked it. True story. Very contrasting those roaring 20's by today's standards. I was a bit surprised that I liked the cast as much as I did. Clint did the music and it was nice, very subdued. I liked the sets and the costumes were great.
I really like this from the very opening shot to the finality. Although most of the characters were a bit dull to me, there were some that were absolute gems. Some of these gems shined from the start for me, others took awhile for me to appreciate. The ones that were dull to me, just became filler around the central themes.
But for me this movie has it moments of pure magic which I could watch again and again. I did watched the "good parts" awhile ago and it was enough for me to be interested and hang on to this for a rainy day.
This just became on of my favorites and I will watch it again.

Great Star Trek movie! It really messed with my mind. I loved the casting, approach to cinematography and lighting (be prepared for something different!! I was glad that I had a heads up on the halation effects. At times the theater looked like a disco. Lol.)
Leonard Nimoy's first live-action film role since Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).
Majel Barrett, the wife of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, has a role in this film as the voice of the Enterprise computer. She completed filming two weeks before her death on December 18 2008.
I liked the action scenes a lot. Lol many times. What is it about Luc Bensson? Sometimes he nails it. But I really love the cinematography! So beautiful for early 90's. Plus the cast is great! They really do a very good job at bringing it to life. Superb. I had heard and seen reviews and recommendations many times about this and I was a little afraid that I would be disappointed due to high expectations but I loved it. Luc Besson's best in my eyes.
I'm totally looking forward to more Jessica Chastain as Salome in Al Pachino's (writing and directing) Salome or King Herod (Pachino) or Salomaybe? "Pacino takes us on a journey as he unravels and re-interprets Oscar Wilde's once banned and most controversial work SALOME, a scintillating tale of lust, greed and one woman's scorn."
And I'm also looking forward to seeing more of Jessica Chastain opposite Brad Pitt in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life due in 2010!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, wow, wow - Mel Gibson is a freaking awesome director!!!!
Great rookie cast, sets, costume design, makeup, Cinematography, Art Direction, and Mel Gibson's awesome DIRECTION!!!!
Oscar noms for Best Achievement in Makeup, Sound Edit, and Sound Mix. Sounded great! Good soundtrack from Horner. Adds depth but did not distract at all. It took me there and kept me there.
I can't belive this did not get an Achievement in Costume Design and win! This was WAY BETTER than Marie Antoinette!!!!!
Better score and overall picture than The Queen. Actually best directed movie of 2007, what a joke that Mel did not get a nomination. Because he is a jerk or has a messed up un-PC personal life? Who cares! Mel Gibson WROTE a story with a mostly rookie cast and made an awesome film. Wow.
Beautiful and bloody with a body count of 114 slain, it does not take away or distract from the story at all.
I can't believe that I waited so long to see this. 2 thumbs way up!!
"Many substantial speaking roles in the film were filled by Mayan people who had never acted before." - Wow!
For the waterfall jump scene, Rudy Youngblood performed his own stunt 10 takes.
