| Avatar - PG-13 |
A definite masterpiece.
This movie nailed it, and by that I mean absolutely knocked me out with its awesomeness. I went in expecting it to be good, but not amazing. I was pleasantly surprised. The film is about humans visiting a new planet and trying to colonise it. The scientists are trying to win over the planet natives and to gain their trust. But the military just want to raid and destroy everything. The humans have a clever technology, the avatars, living alien clones made out of the DNA of a specific human being. Only that human being can then take control of the clone's body. After the first expedition, the main character gets lost in the woods and joins the local race living in the woods - the Na'vi. At first they dislike him and mock him, but he gradually earns their trust as he learns their ways. The movie has a lot of deep and spiritual themes as conflicts enfold between the Na'vi and the human military. This movie tackles many different emotions - destiny, love, courage, respect, feeling belonged and more. I'd suggest you to watch this film in 3D, because then you can fully enjoy the beautiful stunning graphics and the mind-blowing action sequences. Avatar can easily be the best movie of the year. Yeah, there were some other good movies. But Avatar is truly what the movie experience is all about - great story, great new world that engulfs and the ability to make the audience feel what the characters feel. |

| Saw VI - R |
Another good addition to Saw series.
I was eager to watch this since the teasers and the trailers came out, and I finally got to watching it today. The film was definitely intense. Some scenes kept me on the edge of my seat. However for the most part I started seeing that the Saw movies are losing their touch a bit. Yes, as stand alone movies they are good. But the 'games' are pretty much the same now. This film's game was exactly the same as the Saw III's and IV's game. As usual, there are a whole load of new characters, most of which are killed off before they get developed. However a lot of the little loose ends get uncovered. There wasn't any major twist I'd say, but there were a lot of little twists, building up to a pretty cool final scene, even though it wasn't much of a hit in the face as some of the twists in the earlier films. The starting scene was definitely gruesome, and there are a few others of similar nature later on, but for the most part I'd say the first scene was the only one that went a bit too far in gore. Overall I didn't think it was as strong as I, II and IV, but it was heaps better than III and V. I really wonder what they're planning for the last two films in the series, because there's hardly anything left to reveal now. I really hope they won't be squeezing random crap out of nothing for those. Fingers crossed. |

| Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant - PG-13 |
First of all, I read only the first book ages ago, whilst the movie includes more than that (not sure if it's 2 books or 3), so about half of the movie was new to me.
Overall I quite enjoyed it. It had action, it had interesting characters, and a nice idea. The story is about two opposing types of the night creatures: the vampires and the vampaneze. Both are very similar but have different cultures and so the disagreement once used to be a war, but later turned into truce. However now the truce is on the brink of turning into a war once again. Now whatever happens lies in the hands of two friends, Darren and Steve. I personally thought that John C. Reilly was miscast as Larten Crepsley, because from when I read the first book, I imagined Mr Crepsley to look completely different, and John C. Reilly doesn't look anything like him. However in terms of portrayal I think he's done a relatively good job. The rest of the acting wasn't bad. It didn't stand out, but no-one was acting wooden or anything, so that was good. I however loved how they made Madam Octa (the spider). She was done absolutely beautifully. A nice movie overall. A lot has been skipped out and changed from the books, but the movie itself was still pretty enjoyable and I liked it. |

| Couples Retreat - PG-13 |
Mostly for one time watching really. It had interesting characters, but not enough laughs to get you to watch it again.
Vince Vaughn is always funny, but this is by far not his best work. Others weren't too bad either. Was nice to see Pete Serafinowicz (from Shaun of the Dead) in this for a fair bit too. And I am sure if you didn't find this movie funny at all, you must've at least laughed at the yoga coach, because he was rather funny. Too bad they put half of the laughs to do with him into the trailer already. Not sure if this film could've been better or not, since the idea wasn't exactly original or capturing, but I can't really give it more than 3 stars, because the humour was rather diluted. |

| Zombieland - R |
One of the most entertaining films ever. It surpassed my expectations.
Zombieland is about a zombie outbreak, something we've seen many times before, but it gives it a whole new humour. Zombies in this one are fast-running and are rather violent, There is a lot of silly gore in the film, but it's not a repulsive gore, it's funny gore. The acting was OK. It wasn't really the highlight of the film. But the chemistry between characters was pretty good in some ways. Well what makes me give this film 5 stars then? Well just the way it was presented to the audience and for all the one-liners. It has a great entertainment value and that is always something that attracts me. Any movie that can help you forget your daily problems and just blast you with silly gore and funny one-liners tends to get 5 stars from me. I am telling you, if you want entertainment, then you'll get it from this movie. |

| The Invention of Lying - PG-13 |
Wasn't really anything big or hugely original, but it was a fun ride nevertheless, even though it makes fun of religion a bit. Hehe, Man in the Sky.
Ricky Gervais is a pretty good comedian overall and I sure do look forward to his other films, but so far except for him, nobody else in his films makes a funny... except perhaps for some cameo roles...ahem... Stephen Merchant. Definitely loved a cameo scene with him in. He should've played a bigger role in it. I wish Karl Pilkington did one of those too. It'd be absolutely hilarious. Overall a nice concept, but it makes me think - even if you could only speak the truth, doesn't exactly mean you have to say everything. Not saying everything is not exactly lying. But I suppose it was done for the laughs. Good for maybe one time watching only. After that I won't really watch it again, maybe once or twice at most. |

| RocknRolla - R |
One of those lighthearted films. I didn't entirely get the plot, but I got the gist of it. Gerard Butler played a funny character and I think gave this film the most entertainment. The film was kinda boring in parts and so wasn't my cup of tea, but it had its good moments, e.g. when the two Russians were chasing Gerard Butler through the rail tracks.
It seemed like one of those gangster/mob kind of films but much less serious. Pretty average to me. |

| Surrogates - PG-13 |
A very interesting concept. Surrogates takes place in a near future where a breakthrough invention changed the people's lifestyle. The invention are the robots which obey every thought of the person who is connected to them from their home. These robots are called Surrogates. This way people do not even need to come out of their homes and just live life through a robot. This is a great benefit for the handicapped and disabled people.
However there are resistance groups - groups of people who hate Surrogates and do not allow those to enter their territories. The film begins when the son of the inventor of Surrogates gets killed, which leads two agents on a case to find out who did this, how they did this and for what purpose. The film is not amazing, but it definitely is good. Its concept is very interesting. It's very similar to nowadays life, where everyone are connected to the internet and can pretend to be someone else, except that here it takes it to the next level. The acting and the characters were pretty believable, the special effects were nice, and there was definitely enough action to satisfy an action fan. Overall a pretty decent movie that's worth a try, especially if you're into sci-fi films. |

| Gladiator - R | September 15, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Outlander - R |
Another great epic.
This film mixes sci-fi and epic genre. The film is about a man from some distant planet by name of Kainan, whose ship crashlanded on Earth during the time of Vikings. At first he is treated as an enemy, but then gradually he starts to prove himself. The main problem that he faces is that the monster that caused his ship to crash is now roaming free and killing people. Now it is up to him to win trust of the townspeople and to find a way to bring the demon monster Moorwen down. The action was pretty great. It's definitely a highlight of the film. The special effects of Moorwen were really good. The whole glow looked amazing and the way the beast maneuvred was made to look very deadly. There's also plenty of blood and various violent ways of dying. So yes, the movie is not so much for the squimish. The acting wasn't too bad. I won't say anyone stood out in particular, but no-one really did badly either. Other than that, the movie is a bit long. I reckon it should've been a tad bit shorter. There's so much of the same action you can take before getting bored. But overall it's not a big issue. I'd say any fan of fantasy epics such as Lord of the Rings series, In the Name of the King, Conan the Barbarian, The 13th Warrior, etc should give this film a try. |

| Blindness - R |
The film is about an outbreak of a mysterious disease where people go blind. But this blindness is not a natural blindness. Instead of seeing black, these people see white.
I found the first half or so of the film boring, because nothing much was escalating. However then some trouble started to stir up, and we get to see human nature at its worst. I honestly find films like this painful to watch. Are we human beings really so greedy, unfair and violent? The film also had two huge loose ends which it never explained: - How did this disease start on the first place - Why was main heroine not affected by it; was she immune to it or something? So yeah. Watch at your own risk. I'd say it's in some ways similar to Children of Men, but not as good. |

| The Broken - R |
An all right horror film. I won't say it was particularly scary or had an original plot, but it was more or less suspenseful and interesting. You could sort of guess the ending twist.
Overall not a bad movie. Good for one of those evenings when you want something mysterious. |

| District 9 - R |
I must say, I was not disappointed. However I won't say this film is exactly super amazing like everyone seems to say it is either.
First of all, I like the realistic feel this film had. The aliens were very believable and the situation was pretty believable too. The film showed human nature really well too. All the greed and the fear of the unknown was spot on. The action was definitely awesome too. In short - there was lots of blood. The final few scenes of the movie involved the most action and I really enjoyed those. They were pretty epic and dramatic too. This film mixes action and drama rather well. And finally, the acting by the main character stood out a fair bit. He portrayed the bitter emotions really well. The emotions of suffering, the emotions of hopelessness. I'd say mostly this film is for one-time watching. The amount of emotions you go through would be hard to bear the second time round, especially the feeling of resentment towards the human nature. A well done film, no doubt about it. |

| The Killing Room - Unrated |
A rather interesting and intense thriller. The plot and the idea of why those people were tested doesn't get revealed until the end, and so it keeps you guessing. The twist in the end was pretty cool too. I think there was a nice suspense here in places.
However I won't say the acting is anything special, and this film is not big on rewatchability. There isn't much action here, and no particular acting to admire, so there is nothing really to look forward to if you watch it the second time round. I'd say Saw and Cube films are better films of this sub-genre. |

| Friday the 13th - R |
Well a remake is a remake, so don't expect anything new in this. It is just like any other episode of Jason vs the horny adolescents. However the action and the gore is still fun. Jason never fails to impress me as a killing machine.
Overall there isn't much to say about this movie. It is just like all the older Friday the 13th films, except modernised. But otherwise the feel and style is exactly the same. So if you enjoyed those, then I am sure you'll be with a big smile on your face at the end of this one too. |

| Paul Blart: Mall Cop - PG |
Wasn't sure if I'd like it or not, I watched it on a rented DVD and I must say it was more or less pretty entertaining.
The movie is about a guy who is a mall security guard. He is constantly made fun of, especially for his weight, is pretty lonely, and suffers from hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). However he still has a positive attitude to life and doesn't let petty insults get to him. I think the movie is pretty inspirational. It gives a good message, saying that no matter how lonely, how ugly, how fat and how unlucky you might be, you can still be happy. However the movie is not exactly a drama. It's actually a comedy and action at the same time. I personally loved the bit when there's a robbery in the mall and how he alone tries to stop the crooks and to rescue a girl he has a crush for. Definitely worthy of a try. |

| 17 Again - PG-13 |
This was an all right movie. The plot was pretty much a stereotypical chick flick drama.
The film is about a man who in his adolescent years abandoned his basketball career because his girlfriend got pregnant and that he wanted to be by her side and to take care of her. However after many years, when he is a middle-aged man, their relationship breaks apart and this is when he gets sucked into a mysterious time warp where he is given a second chance, i.e. he is 17 again, but it's still the same year. So now he goes to high school in order to try and help his kids there, as well as to win back his wife. First of all, Matthew Perry doesn't get much screen time in this, so if you're expecting plenty of laughs just because he is in this film, don't. You won't get any. Zac Efron, although did better here than in that pathetic excuse of a series - High School Musical, still is yet to get any respect from me. So long as he is a Disney star, I can't take him as a serious actor. I quite liked Thomas Lennon, because his character was pretty funny, and if you would get any laughs in this film would undoubtedly be from him. Overall an OK movie, but it has way too many awkward situations and just isn't my cup of tea, especially when the lead actor is a Disney star. |

| Darkman - R |
Quite a well done comic book flick.
Darkman just earned his place among my favourite comic book heroes. His story is a dark one. Originally he was a scientist, who was working on how to help people regenerate tissues of their body if those were damaged. However one day a bunch of gangsters broke into his lab, killed his co-worker and destroyed his lab, with him in it. However just like many other comic book heroes of similar style, he survived and decided to take justice into his own hands by punishing every single gangster and calling himself The Darkman. The movie has pretty all right special effects. If you consider the time it was made in, those are pretty good. The overall action was rather entertaining and kickass. Acting was definitely good. I mean Liam Neeson plays the main character. Enough said already. Plus the other characters were acted out rather well too and were pretty believable. Overall I thought it was a pretty good superhero action movie. I think any fan of dark heroes should watch this. Now bring on the two sequels... |

| Push - PG-13 |
No matter how much this film is getting slagged off by critics, I really enjoyed it. I didn't have any doubts in that of course. From the moment I saw the trailer, I knew I'd enjoy this film.
The concept of powers that some people have is definitely awesome. It might be similar to X-men films, but the idea of powers in this one is kind of different. These are mostly mind powers, so you can never know who has the power and who doesn't. Besides the way this film presented them was something. It has a pretty awesome 'mindf***' for a simple action movie. Considering there are people who see the future of any decision you make, people who can sniff you out based on any item that you've used, people who can push you to believe any fabrication they say and other stuff, the amount of possibilities of what can happen next is limitless. It keeps you guessing. The acting for the most part was pretty all right actually. Everyone got into their role in their own way. Djimon Hounsou plays a cool villain, Dakota Fanning plays a young girl with a power to see the future and she really well portrays the anxiety because the future looks bad, Camilla Belle with her portrayal of the only survivor of the drugs that government used on the people with powers, and of course Chris Evans as the main protagonist. I definitely enjoyed this film. It's an action movie with a good story. If you like those then you should give this film a try. |
